Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 4/30/15
11:11 |
: I’ll be here shortly
|
11:12 |

12:00 |
How excited should we be over Foltynewicz? Thinking of dropping Dickey or Niese for him in my 15 teamer.. thoughts? |
12:00 |
: No changeup, no command. Still, I guess I might drop Dickey.
|
12:00 |
Facing Gerrit Cole and Arqiumedes Caminero in the same game should be against the rules. SAVE US MR. MANFRIED |
12:00 |
I just traded Adrian Gonzalez for Jose Abreu *drops mic* |
12:00 |
Hey Eno, two interesting anecdotes from Jon Morosi on yesterday’s game played at an empty Camden Yards: (1) When Showalter made a call to the bullpen, he could hear the phone ring from the left-centerfield bullpen; and (2) Zach Britton could hear the broadcasters calling the game while he pitched in the ninth. Spooky stuff. |
12:01 |
: I also liked Caleb Joseph signing autographs for fake fans, and the twenty or so people out by the outfield gate that were cheering. In Germany, they call these games Geisterspiele, or Ghostgames, which seems appropriate. /luded
|
12:01 |
Rafael Soriano to the Blue Jays as the closer makes sense at this point? |
12:02 |
: It’s not crazy. Cecil still at 91 or so. Osuna would be my closer.
|
12:02 |
Any reason to think Everth Cabrera won’t get close to full-time at-bats for much of the remainder of the season? |
12:03 |
: Hardy going to be healthy at some point and Schoop has probably played his way into starting despite his flaws. But they’ll find him 450 or so I’d bet.
|
12:04 |
Hey Eno, on the pod you mentioned that guys who throw the “baby slider” version of the cutter would be more susceptible to injury. Who are some guys we should watch out for? |
12:05 |
: I made this list once Adam Wainwright, Andy Pettitte, Barry Zito, Chris Carpenter, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Dan Haren, Esteban Loaiza, Gavin Floyd, James Shields, John Danks, Jon Lester, Jon Niese, Josh Beckett, Josh Tomlin, Kyle Davies, Kyle Kendrick, Mark Buehrle, Miguel Batista, Nick Blackburn, Tim Hudson and Tim Stauffer, and you might want to add Madison Bumgarner. Obviously every rule of thumb is not applicable to each player on the list, and age is a huge factor.
|
12:05 |
Also- Talked to a Goose Island Brewer last week. Said his favorite sour they make was Lolita. I know I should take the guys word since he makes the stuff, but do you concur with this? |
12:05 |
: Yeah it’s either Lolita or Halia, both are amazing.
|
12:05 |
Was the Michael Lorenzen debut better than it looked? 15% swstr, getting whiffs on his fb, sl, ch and curve? Seems like 4 distinct pitches with gas… |
12:06 |
: Gave up all his homers on the 95 mph fastball, maybe he just needs to trust his secondary stuff more. The changeup was flat, but it had nice run and a good velocity difference. Looked like a full arsenal for a college reliever.
|
12:06 |
just so everyone knows, mookie betts is the coolest. he is even cooler than lucas duda. you heard me |
12:06 |
: Mind. blown.
|
12:06 |
Anthony Rizzo has already matched last year’s stolen base total of 6, and the Cubs are running all over the place, first in the National League right now in steals. Could you see Rizzo getting 20-30 SB, and if so where would that put him in overall fantasy value? |
12:07 |
: He was top ten for me, that would put him right there with Goldy in the top three/four.
|
12:07 |
When Statcast shows “perceived velocity,” what are they really measuring? |
12:08 |
: I think they are looking at extension, so if a tall person throws the ball closer to the plate than a short person, the batter has less time to react. So I guess they normalize release points to one point, and give pitchers with tons of extension more credit.
|
12:08 |
: Pitchers with extension: Lincecum, Walden, Bauer, Robertson.
|
12:08 |
What will the Mets do with Plawecki when D’Arnaud comes back? Minors, trade, or find another position for him (practice for it now)? |
12:08 |
: minors for a bit.
|
12:08 |
![]() eno! |
12:08 |
Choo is killing me. I think he is still hurt… another wasted season (and draft pick!). |
12:09 |
: I’d guess he was hurt, too, and it’s disappointing to hear, from a fantasy standpoint, that he’d rather play hurt than get it totally right.
|
12:10 |
Hey Eno! I can trade ARod for either Anibal or Pineda. Which pitcher should I take? 10 tm h2h. |
12:10 |
: That’s kind of cool because they’re the two best current examples for recovery from Labrum (SLAP) surgery. I’ll take Pineda. Younger and better K-BB and who knows with a shoulder recovery guy either way.
|
12:10 |
Do the Astros call up Correa now that Lowrie is hurt? |
12:10 |
: No
|
12:11 |
I see your Dropp and I raise you 1 Tri-Repetae |
12:11 |
: favd
|
12:11 |
Do you think Cecil holds the Jays’ closer job going forward? If he falters, who gets the next chance? |
12:11 |
: Osuna. I think he could falter. Part of his brilliance was the velocity that Osuna has now.
|
12:11 |
Have you gotten the “question” that Michael Pineda is the best pitcher in NY yet? Someone keeps getting that one posted in these chats. And I think he forgot about Matt Harvey. |
12:11 |
: Got it on twitter and I pointed that out and he said let’s wait a month and I said sure.
|
12:13 |
Ever have Captain’s Daughter from Grey Sails in RI? It’s the (insert player you consider underrated) of beer in the Northeast |
12:13 | : Number one in the state! |
12:13 |
What are reasonable expectations of J.A. Happ and Roenis Elias this year? And who would you think to be more valuable? |
12:13 |
: I don’t really like either except as high floor deep league innings plays.
|
12:13 |
I’m pushing for the Mets to call up and use Matz & Thor for the 7th and 8th innings. Despite their record, they do not currently have the bullpen to stay above .500 all year long. |
12:14 |
: the problem is that then you don’t have the innings for them as starters next year.
|
12:14 |
What kind of leash does Bud Norris have in Baltimore? Think Gausman gets back into the rotation soon enough? |
12:15 |
: I don’t see a lot to recommend him, and there’s already noise about change. I’d hold Gausman for a couple more Bud starts just in case.
|
12:15 |
Hutchison and Greene need to be on WWs in shallow (10-team) leagues, right? Just too inconsistent at this point? |
12:16 |
: Probably but a bit of good news: Greene velocity up a tick again last start. And the Ks came back. Better home park too.
|
12:16 |
Hi Eno! Is Hutchison in danger and is there any chance Osuna gets some starts? |
12:16 |
: I don’t think he’s in that kind of danger, no.
|
12:17 |
: But he’s not
|
12:17 |
:
|
12:17 |
Is it worth holding onto Watson in a 12 team, mixed or will Melancon be fine? |
12:17 |
: hold for a bit, unless you trade over for Ramos.
|
12:18 |
Brutal week for me. Need a spot for streaming, who is the most droppable in a 14 team mixed: Rusney, Ottavino (only have Cecil and C.Allen) or Tanaka? Or hold for a week and see what info comes out |
12:18 |
: I don’t want to drop any of those guys
|
12:18 |
Is it stupid to roster Carrasco, Salazar and Bauer in a daily-moves league with a 200 GS limit? Any issue there? |
12:18 |
: No
|
12:18 |
How do you view Marco Gonzales once he gets the call up? And what player comp does he remind you of? Thanks. |
12:20 |
: If he had more velocity, could be Hamels-esque, because he’s a lefty with good command a devastating (top five by whiff rate) changeup, and developing breakers. But he’s at 89, so I guess he could be Dallas Keuchel.
|
12:20 |
With McGee coming back next week, how will the 9th inning duties play out in Tampa? Any point hanging on to guys like Jepsen and Frieri if hoping to vulture a few saves? |
12:20 |
: Not Frieri and barely Jepsen. I think Box will get ‘most’ saves, but they’ll actually use McGee and Box in the best situations and they’ll split saves. Keeps em both cheaper and is the best way to use the pen.
|
12:20 |
Even though he gave up 5 runs, I was encouraged by Wood’s start last night. 1 bad pitch to J-Zimm cost him with bases loaded cost him, and the Ks are back! Your thoughts? |
12:21 |
http://www.brooksbaseball.n… but it was nice to see Ks. All of the whiffs came on the curve. I’ll buy him low.
: He still threw it low in the zone and out of the zone |
12:22 |
Thoughts on Kang so far? Not playing much yet, but it’s not hard to imagine him displacing Mercer at some point. |
12:23 |
: Happy to see a normal swinging strike rate, think he can K 20-24%, so that means the batting average will be okay. Since I believe in his power, and they have equal patience, the question is about defense. I thought his D looked fine in spring, but that’s the measure. Kang’s Power vs Mercer’s D.
|
12:24 |
if mlb wants to vote for the all-star game in april, why not go one step further and make everyone hall of fame-eligible when they turn 25. imagine the hot sports takes. is bryce harper a first-ballot HoFer? MY COLUMN: |
12:24 |
: PUMPKIN BEERS IN APRIL
|
12:24 |
Should I drop Chris Hatcher since Jansen will be back shortly or will he pickup some more saves? |
12:24 |
: If you need the slot, Hatcher is a temp.
|
12:24 |
Got an offer of Mookie Betts for my Jorge Soler? H2H points league where there is a penalty for K’s. Which side do you like more? |
12:25 |
: Soler looks like he’s going to K a lot this year, and Betts’ BABIP going to jump soon, IMO. I still love love Soler, but this is fine. Maybe get an arm thrown in.
|
12:25 |
: (better than a leg)
|
12:25 |
Any plans to update your arsenal score ratings? I know there was something in HBT recently, but I think those are different than yours? |
12:26 | : No, but dude took the ball and ran with it. I like those. |
12:26 |
Every year my hitting sucks, buy my pitching kicks ass. This year I decided I must be drafting pitchers too early, so I didn’t draft a pitcher till my lineup was set. Now my hitting sucks AND my pitching sucks. What’s wrong with me? |
12:26 |
: Baseball is crazy.
|
12:26 |
Looking at Trumbo’s spray charts and swing stats, it looks like he is being more aggressive while also being more patient? Lower K% & BB% as he’s swinging earlier in the count, but charts show he is hitting with more oppo intent this year. SSS or maybe a change in approach? Stats looking better so far. |
12:27 |
: I like those things for him. He’s not going to walk, so stay out of two-strike counts. the Josh Hamilton approach. Going the other way should help with platoon splits, too, even if the data doesn’t quite back this yet.
|
12:27 |
What order do you have Lorenzen, Folty, Cooney, Lyons for the rest of the season? |
12:27 |
: That order, but i’m not in love with any.
|
12:27 |
Waiver wire for a Tanaka replacement. Wood, Ubaldo or Morrow (those strikeouts have to come back, right?)? |
12:27 |
: Wood, Morrow
|
12:28 |
I have a mish mash of starters on my team after Felix including Anibal, Ubaldo, Danny Salazar, Porcello and Eovaldi. Of the latter 5, which 3 would you have the most confidence in having active week in week out? Or, would you play the matchup game and thread all 5 in and out of the active lineup based on matchup? |
12:28 |
: I’m not confident in Ubaldo. I think I’d start Anibal and Danny most weeks and see if I couldn’t alternate Porcello and Eo in good parks.
|
12:28 |
12 team, mixed, start 1 catcher, OBP league. No keepers. My DeSclafani & Alex Wood for his Posey? |
12:28 |
: I like those pitchers, but sure, I usually jump at any chance to trade pitching for hitting.
|
12:29 |
Lets kick this off right! Thoughts on Shelby Miller going forward versus a Joe Kelly type? Kelly’s stuff is insane, but Miller keeps piling up points in my 10 team H2H league. I don’t want to drop him, but I can’t bring myself to start him. Meanwhile Kelly is sitting on the waiver wire. |
12:29 |
: Miller for me. And I like Kelly some.
|
12:29 |
Why do I get the feeling Gausman is about to break out? |
12:31 |
: The curveball? It doesn’t get whiffs — his slider didn’t either — but so far every one put in play has been a grounder, and it’s a different look. I think that could be it.
|
12:31 |
wld drink a hopfensmoothie tbqh glug glug |
12:31 |
If Felix’s arm fell off tomorrow, should he be a Hall of Famer? |
12:31 |
: short-peaker
|
12:32 |
: or: Koufaxian
|
12:32 |
Going into the season, I found it somewhat surprising that virtually every single fantasy writer had Altuve regressing significantly, in both the SB and AVG category. When reading all the reasons for the expected regression, I found it to be mostly fluff. A month of the season is now in the books, and Altuve has pretty much just kept the 2014 train rolling. Can we start believing more in his ability to sustain the majority of last season’s numbers? |
12:32 |
: Stolen bases age terribly, but not until 26/27, so yeah he’s fine. I like the change he made to his stride, too.
|
12:32 |
Tough last few days for “Eno’s guys”. Hutch, Greene, Chase, all getting rocked. Next year stick with Kersaw, Felix, Sale, guys like that as “Enos Guys” |
12:32 |
: There would be zero value to that.
|
12:33 |
: “Hey guys I think this guy Felix Hernandez is going to be good this year!”
|
12:33 |
Could Mike Pelfrey be a relevant mixed leave starter? He looks pretty good and I can’t believe I’m saying that. He had Tigers hitters baffled a few times. |
12:34 |
: He’s finally throwing the splitter as much as I wanted him to in New York, but all the years have biased me against him. I’d want to know your dropper.
|
12:34 |
I’m getting a lot of requests for Kole Calhoun in my OBP league. I noticed he’s not the best at OBP. should I be selling his youth and future? (dynasty league with 5 OF spots) I’m contending right now. thanks! |
12:35 |
: He’s 27! I doubt there’s a lot of projection left. If someone Godfathers you, do it.
|
12:35 |
Which non-closer has the best chance to be a pretty decent closer ROS? |
12:35 |
: Ramos.
|
12:35 |
Just got media credentials for my first minor league game. Any advice? |
12:35 |
: Dance with the second-best looking girl first.
|
12:35 |
Eno Tsuriss: Yiddish for Enos Worries |
12:35 |
Thoughts on Jesse Chavez moving forward now that he’s in the rotation? For now and ROS, where do you rank him amongst younger guys like Taijuan, Pomeranz, and Norris? |
12:36 |
: He told me that he prepped for this season as a starter and that’s why his velocity is up. I’ll take him over Norris for sure, who is good, but the command worries me a bit with a young pitcher. Walker’s stuff is so nasty I’ll take him despite the worries. Pom is like Chavez, both guys I’d rather start at home.
|
12:37 |
Can we please at least pay attention to Danny Espinosa again yet? 4 singles yesterday brought his BABIP to .297 and he’s now hitting .277/.404/.468. Yes, in just 58 PA. But he has what would be career bests in bb%, contact%, z-contact% and his lowest o-swing% and swstr% since 2011. They all still sit worse than league average (except the 13.8 BB%), but if he can get back to his 2011-12 level, he could easily be the Nats opening day SS in 2016, right? |
12:37 |
: I’ve always had a little love for him. But aren’t there platoon issues that they are hiding through usage this year? I still think Yunel and him will split time once Rendon is back, and either could be at short next year.
|
12:38 |
Fielder hits ___ HR’s ROS? |
12:38 |
: 21
|
12:38 |
How concerned should I be about Jose Quintina? K rate dropped, FIP not good, and GB% down. |
12:39 |
: He’s a two-pitch guy relying on fastball command in a hitter’s park. Was tepid about him this year, and remain so. I wouldn’t drop, but i wouldn’t buy.
|
12:39 |
CC now has 240 innings of meh. spread over 3 seasons. Any reason to think all of a sudden his performance will catch up with his peripherals and hell be mixed league relevant? |
12:40 |
: You know, that park can inflate HR/FB, which is his main problem. I wish he was in the NL and I could say that I’d like to buy. As is, this looks a lot like last year, with a deeper slider and a few more whiffs on that pitch. He’s hiding the fastball now.
|
12:40 |
: (old)
|
12:40 |
Your thoughts on BP’s DRA? |
12:41 |
: It’s really good.
|
12:41 |
Addison Russell worth anything in a redraft? |
12:41 |
: Nah, always thought it might be a little rough at first, judging from his K rates first time at a level.
|
12:41 |
so you think Sanchez eventually takes the closer job in Toronto? Or does more established like Papelbon or Soriano get hired? |
12:41 |
: It’s either Osuna, Cecil, or an outsider.
|
12:42 |
Hey Eno! Thoughts on Jesse Hahn’s start last night? After a rocky first inning, he seemed to settle down. Is the blister an issue anymore? Still bullish on him? |
12:42 |
: Needed the Stanton mask
|
12:42 |
how high is Smyly in your pitching ranks ROS? Looked great yesterday. |
12:43 |
: Love that dude. I think he can do it with FB/SL/CB at home in that park. Good command. No velocity loss.
|
12:43 |
Do you have a favorite injured SP stash candidate besides Jose Fernandez? Patrick Corbin? Brandon Beachy? |
12:43 |
: Corbin.
|
12:43 |
I left my windows open and it’s supposed to rain v.v |
12:44 |
: Hope nothing cool is on your passenger seat.
|
12:44 |
Who breaks out this year — Bogaerts or Russell? |
12:44 |
: XB
|
12:44 |
I am near last in a super deep 13 team dynasty roto league, just lost my #2 pitcher to TJS and my SS for at least the next 2.5 months. When should I sell? |
12:44 |
: Before the other guys. Sometime this month if things don’t change while those guys are out.
|
12:44 |
Time to give up on Steve Pearce? Seems like he’s only going to be a platoon bat for the O’s going forward. |
12:44 |
: Short side platoon too.
|
12:44 |
I just traded Yoenis Cespedes for Billy the kid Hamilton. Did I win? or lose? |
12:45 |
: As long as you can cover in the power categories, should be a win just on value.
|
12:45 |
Rusney is back at AAA. If he’s good to go in a week, is he up even if Victorino is back? |
12:46 |
: Dunno, the Sox don’t really need a hitting upgrade, and bringing Rusney up will cost them an asset on the roster somewhere. I think that’s what’s holding them back.
|
12:46 |
Trade Lucroy and Kipnis for Cano, and pick up Mesarasco. Good trade? |
12:46 |
: Yes
|
12:46 |
Picked up my first La Folie the other day, haven’t tried it yet. What should I make for dinner to pair it with? |
12:47 |
: I think sours probably go better with something lighter, like a seafood pasta or something.
|
12:47 |
With all the talk of NL adopting the DH, why not just go with 8-man lineups instead? The DH is just an affirmative action program for lardasses who can’t field a position. |
12:47 |
: Players like roster spots and jobs.
|
12:47 |
Ottoneu 5×5. Looking to upgrade Miller at MI and also get more runs. All except Miller are bench players for me. Trade $5 Miller, $4 Chase Anderson, $4 Lamb and $1 Kiermaier for $18 Dozier and $7 Fowler + $5? |
12:47 |
: I like Miller, Anderson, Lamb and KK and I’d still do this.
|
12:48 |
What is the deal with Chase Utley? I can’t tell if he is just majestically unlucky or if he isn’t hitting the ball with any authority at all. Obviously I don’t watch Phillies games 😛 so I don’t have anything to go off of besides his stats. |
12:48 |
: He’s 36 and on degenerative knees and also unlucky. But unsure he’ll regress to mixed team worthiness.
|
12:48 |
Favorite IPA beer? |
12:49 |
: psuedo Sue from Toppling Goliath or Alpine Nelson or Maine Lunch

12:49 |
Ottavino has elbow inflammation–worth leaving on the bench until healthy? SV+HD league. |
12:49 |
: I still think he’s great and that’s not a strain or anything.
|
12:50 |
I dont have the guts to drop zunnino, 20 bombs last year is so sexy |
12:50 |
: That k-rate tho

12:50 |

12:50 |

12:51 |
Hey Eno – I’m having a miserable time at 2B (Kipnis) and MI (C. Owings). A) do you expect Kipnis to actually be a dude again and B) Should I dump Owings in favor of Brandon Crawford, Danny Espinosa, Solarte, or Brandon Phillips? (FYI – 12 team .OPS league) |
12:52 |
: Woof on Brandon’s .600 OPS, I would have gone there. I feel okay about Kipnis, but Owings told me he changed his swing to a two-handed finish to keep his shoulder healthy, and that worries me. I think I’d still bank on Phillips adding some power over the PT of the middle two.
|
12:53 |
HI Eno, you were as high as anyone on Teheran. Me too, but wondering now where you put him and if it is actually time to sell low?! |
12:53 |
: Swinging strike rate is still good, pitches all same shape and velocity and mix for the most part, and he’s never had command issues like this before. I think he’ll be fine.
|
12:53 |
Are we seeing a breakout from Wil Myers this year/ Something in the line of 20/20 with a .280 ba? |
12:53 |
: And I couldn’t get myself a share. So. Mad.
|
12:53 |
just read your Alex Wood piece, seems like despite the struggles you think he’ll return to greatness? Goodness? what sort of stats would you predict? |
12:54 |
: Goodness. More GBs, fewer Ks, but eventually representative Ks.
|
12:54 |
i can pick up one of smyly, paxton, or shelby miller to fill an SP hole — who do I want? |
12:54 |
: Smyly
|
12:54 |
Just got a $30 to a beers of the world store, has a big craft selection too. Top 5 beers I should look to get a 6-pack of? From western NY |
12:56 |
: Dunno if you’ll find Mass beers there, but anything Jack’s Abby, Trillium or Maine. If only New York, I know Captain Lawrence and Sixpoint are good, have heard good things about Rushing Duck and Third Rail…
|
12:56 |
Can we calm down on the man-love for Betts He’s batting .229. with some decent counting stats. BJ Upton, Drew Stubbs territory. |
12:57 |
: You are familiar with peripherals? Betts is a top hard-hit guy, with a low BABIP. Things will change soon. Also, watching him play helps a ton. He’s super smart. And good!
|
12:57 |
: (oh man I did just do that)
|
12:57 |
Craig Kimbrel looked like Rick Ankiel yesterday. |
12:58 |
:
|
12:58 |
: oh you don’t mean physically
|
12:58 |
Is there a formula for what makes a great sports name? Or is it just in direct proportion to the player’s ability? |
12:59 |
: Dude I actually read an analysis that suggested that having the same first and last initial was good for your outcomes. I’m sure it was around the time that Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Mark Mulder, and Barry Bonds were killing it.
|
12:59 |
Mookie Betts: High School MVP in baseball, basketball, and…bowling?! |
12:59 |
Can you all stop bullying me, I just want some validation. Is that too much to ask? |
12:59 |
is michael pineda the best pitcher in the world? including cricket |
1:00 |
: /bowler interlude

1:00 |
Is it normal to use your girlfriend’s inactive twitter account to tweet fantasy experts for advice so that your league mates do not see? |
1:00 |
: Oh lol that’s great
|
1:00 |
Thoughts on Nick Tropeano? Looked really good in his spot start. |
1:00 |
: I liked his velocity, he trusted his splitter/change, and command looked okay. Still like him!
|
1:00 |
Hahn or Pomeranz? |
1:01 |
: Hahn, wider arsenal.
|
1:01 |
Speaking of Gausman … don’t you think a better career development move would be to send him to Norfolk to develop another pitch, rather than keep him here to get bombed in the bullpen? |
1:01 |
: He’s throwing a new pitch in the bullpen!
|
1:01 |
My weekly attempt to get into Eno’s post-chat tweet: Whale larynx |
1:01 |
When will Hurdle start to play Kang more? He hit a rocket double to right center last night with an effortless swing. I’m in favor of Kang starting at third and having Harrison go back to a utility role |
1:02 |
: That’s another possibility. I mean, people can gotcha me on Kang and other’s struggles if you like, but guys like Chase Anderson, Shane Greene, Anthony Desclafani and Jung-Ho Kang have actually shown me a lot, especially when compared to their prices in drafts this year.

1:02 |
Time to sell high on Joc Pederson? I love me some scrambled Eno Sarris, mmmm. |
1:02 |
: The batting average is coming down, yes, but in OBP leagues.. no.
|
1:03 |
I just got offered both Melky and Eaton for Shane Greene in a league with OBP,SLG, and NSB. I really like Greene and my pitching is weak, but I have to take that right? |
1:04 |
: You know, I’m worried about Eaton a bit. I mean I think the BA might come up, but two SB attempts in a month? Not going to get it done. That said, I guess you could take Melky for Greene and then drop Eaton for a pitcher if you wanted.
|
1:04 |
Can you explain the differences between the Plate Discipline stats and the Pitch f/x Plate Discipline stats on every player’s page? I got from the glossary that the Pitch f/x stats are raw data and the non-Pitch f/x stats come from Baseball Info Solutions, and the latter data are mediated to some degree by humans. But why do the two data sources sometimes disagree so much, and which one can I trust more? |
1:05 |
: I mostly just use the PFx ones because they done by computers. I guess there might be a lefty zone which pFx won’t adjust for (lefties see a bigger strike zone on the outside, it’s shifted some), so that might be something a human can deal with, but still. I prefer a virtual box in the air, drawn by a computer.
|
1:05 |
When does Kris Bryant go deep for the first time? |
1:05 |
: This weekend.
|
1:05 |
Just wanted to say I loved the Dodgers bullpen piece, Eno! |
1:06 |
: Thanks!
|
1:06 |
Lost Tanaka and dealing with struggling Greene and Alex Wood in my points league. Chase Anderson, Brandon Morrow, Rubby de la rosa, Karns, and Eovaldi are on the FA list. Pick one to scoop up to replace Tanaka, and do you keep Greene/Wood or go after the FAs? |
1:06 |
: Anderson for me, but if HRA is a big points killer, could go with Morrow over Anderson. I’d keep your two.
|
1:07 |
Is Keuchel for real? Am I likely to get good value for him if I try to trade? I have Salazar on the bench to slot in. Redraft H2H league |
1:07 |
: This surprises me! I’ve been saying Keuchel was for real since late 2013. Salazar’s Ks make me want to trade him, so find the person that agrees with me that Keuchel is for real.
|
1:07 |
is it fair to say miller’s the closer in NY? betances is using up a spot i’d like to free up (10 team h2h) |
1:07 |
: yes
|
1:08 |
Is Henderson Alvarez worth holding onto in a 12 team H2H points league when there are FA options like Paxton, Hahn, Leake, Happ and Rubby De La Rosa? |
1:09 |
: Hahn intrigues, and I think he’ll k more than Alvarez, eventually. That’s what Hahn said to me, and I agree with him!
|
1:09 |
Was Jake Marisnick on your radar before the season? Is he now? |
1:10 |
: I did not like him. But he’s changed his approach a little (more oppo, more contact), and I’m forced to alter my stance a bit. Useful in deeper leagues, yes.
|
1:10 |
We are Eno chat, resistance is futile! (but seriously, imagine if they remade Star Trek: First Contact, but instead of the borg being all mindless and efficient, it was just us being weird!) |
1:10 |
I voted Lucas Duda in for the ASG…at SS. |
1:11 |
:
|
1:11 |
: Guys I had to finish that lude with a video for shame
|
1:12 |
Would sell somewhat high on Souza or keep him for the season? |
1:12 |
: this is still within the realm of reasonable expectations for him, and in a batting average league, might be hard to sell a .230 average.
|
1:13 |
Thoughts on Semien so far. Think he keeps the average where it is and finishes 15/15? |
1:13 |
: Making more contact, so maybe I’ll take the over on his rest of season .243, but I will definitely take the under on .298. 15/15 seems well within reach.
|
1:13 |
I picked up Marisnick to fill in for Gomez and he’s been fantastic. With Gomez returning this weekend, I need to move either Marisnick or Pollock and need some pitching. Which guy do you like more going forward, Marisnick or Pollock? |
1:14 |
: I actually don’t feel strongly about either, and one is probably going to get you more in return, so shop that guy (pollock?).
|
1:14 |
Non-SABR analysis, but, concerning the Red Sox, do you think not having an ace or a “stopper” can have mental effects on the rotation? |
1:14 |
: I think mostly the rotation is full of individuals that try hard for themselves first, and team second. I don’t think it makes that much of a difference.
|
1:15 |
Is Arquímedes Camineroworth a stash? I have Ottavino and need the saves. |
1:15 |
: I mean I like him, but he’s behind Watson.
|
1:15 |
Is Uehara actually finding his special shoes (saying I just made up meaning he’s getting back to what made him good), or should I continue offering him to everyone. |
1:16 |
: Crazy splitter usage, he scares me still. Okay it normalized a bit. last three games; 64, 60, 45% splitters. Maybe it was just a blip. A really strange blip. On a really old reliever that’s a bit frail, too.
|
1:17 |
A while ago you wrote a blip on trevor may. only a few innings but walks are way down now, avg velo is up a tad, and he’s getting k’s. worth anything in dynasty? |
1:18 |
: Using the curve over the slider like he has been might be good for him. Still has a great change. Good velocity. Something to like there, but mostly bench/deeper league play until the breaking balls is trusted more and we can believe the command.
|
1:18 |
What’s up with Shoemaker? His GB% is below 30% so it looks like homers might be a continuing problem going forward. Would you hold tight or sell? |
1:19 |
: They might be a problem, but not like this. 1HR/9 and he can still have an okay ERA, good K rate. I still think he’s a mixed leaguer.
|
1:19 |
Eno, I own Yelich, Zobrist and Puig and I was hoping for 40-50 steals from them. What would be a reasonable ROS steals projection for the trio? |
1:19 |
: 25?
|
1:19 |
Thoughts on the early returns on the Flores SS experiment? |
1:20 |
: I still don’t think he’s a shortstop. But the bat looks a bit nicer than I thought! Maybe second base?
|
1:20 |
5 IFFBs for mookie so far. |
1:20 |
: Truth! But I think if I remember right, you need about 190 Balls in Play for that one to stabilize.
|
1:20 |
You should ask pitchers with extension about how they grip their junk. |
1:21 |
In two recent chats Kiley said that he sees Addison Russell as a 3B/2B guy because his D won’t play at SS (not enough/quick enough arm). Each time he said that he thinks Starlin is currently better than him and will remain so. Thoughts? I know you’re really high on Russell. Do you think he stays at 2B, or do you think they eventually move Bryant’s shaky D to LF and Russell to 3B? |
1:21 |
: I think he stays at second. Baez seems like a bust to me, and I was never in on him. TLS and AA are util/fill in wherever they need help.
|
1:21 |
A.J. Pierzynski, and Steven Vogt are the best offensive catchers in baseball right now. Just a great April or sustainable? |
1:22 |
: Piece on Vogt coming Friday. I believe.
|
1:22 |
:
|
1:23 |
Any ballpark beer reviews on tap (GET IT) for beergraphs? They’re great and very helpful. |
1:23 |
: I’ll bug the writers. But readers can and have submitted!!
|
1:23 |
Stolen bases age terribly, unless you’re Rickey Henderson, but he was a sorcerer. |
1:23 |
Is Brandon Crawford a top 10 fantasy SS ROS? |
1:23 |
: No
|
1:24 |
When someone says 10- or 12-team league, how many players do you assume are rostered? Is there some standard roster size? Wouldn’t number of players rostered be more useful? I’ve played with roster sizes from 23 to 30! |
1:24 |
: I assume around 25. Yahoo standard is something like 12-team, 11 starting hitters, 9 starting pitchers, five bench.
|
1:25 |
Could Kipnis have a 15HR/25SB season or am I reaching? |
1:25 |
: maybe I’ll take the under on both, but not by much, and he always has a big month in him, other than last year when he was hurt for much of the year.
|
1:25 |
Joc: three true outcome GOD. |
1:25 |
My staff of HUtch, Greene and DeSclafani still believes in you Eno! |
1:25 |
Kershaw has led my team to 12th place so far…doh! |
1:25 |
Hey, my first chat since I quit my crap job two months ago. What did I miss? |
1:26 |
: this
|
1:26 |
wow, the orioles beat the white sox on tampa’s home turf, weird |
1:26 |
: attendance joke!
|
1:26 |
best DL catcher stash? D’Arnaud, Wieters or Gomes? H2H 10 team H, R, RBI, TB, SB, K offensive categories. Thanks |
1:26 |
: TDA
|
1:26 |
So Betances has now retired 25 straight batters.. And people were worried. Having watched him lately, it isnt luck, the guy has been utterly dominant. |
1:27 |
: well he didn’t throw his fastball for like two outings, but now it’s back and yeah he’s great
|
1:27 |
Jimmy Nelson looked awful in his last start against CIN, walking 5 in 2+ innings. Do you think this was a fluky performance or will command be an issue for him all season? |
1:29 |
: I’ve been saying that his command isn’t the best, but he also got rattled like a young pitcher after a few blips and bloops. I want more info.
|
1:29 |
Keuchel needs to go to the NL. So that Keuchel can hit for the cycle. |
1:29 |
Is Billy Hamiltons speed 80+? If so, how many other tools can you remember being 80+? Riveras’ cutter? Bonds Hitting? |
1:29 |
: Bonds’ eye. Stanton’s power? Simmons D?
|
1:30 |
What is your favorite water beer (Bud Light, Coors, etc.) ? |
1:30 |
: PBR, Coors Banquet second.
|
1:30 |
Where do you rank Jarrod Parker among SPs when he gets back? |
1:31 |
: Not super high. Didn’t have great command, and coming off TJ that sometimes takes some time. And you have to put your breaking ball away, and that has been behind his change since he left high school.
|
1:31 |
![]() |
1:31 |
Whats the most you’ve ever paid for a bottle of beer? And was it worth it? |
1:32 |
: I think it might have been the $27 I paid for a 375 ML sour recently, and no, that sucked. But the Eclipse 50/50s aged in barrels are pretty expensive and I love them.
|
1:33 |
What is your opinion on Johnny Giavotella this year? he has looked good so far. |
1:33 |
: I thought he could do something like this, but I’ll peg him for a .250 average or so.
|
1:33 |
Is Jose Fernandez going to be awesome when he comes back? |
1:33 |
: First surgery, better command, younger. Yeah I think he’ll be really good.
|
1:34 |
1) Pacquiao or Mayweather? … 2) Which hitter vs pitcher matchup would you pay top dollar to see? |
1:34 |
: I want nothing more than to see that wife beater dropped. I think he’ll win though. 2) Barry vs Kershaw?
|
1:34 |
Thinking about offering Caminero for Ramos in a dynasty, but I’m in love with Caminero’s upside potential with that fastball. Does the potential to get someone like Ramos with a better chance at saves this year outweigh Caminero’s ceiling? My closers are Ottavino, Grilli, and Krod. |
1:36 |
: I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Closers come and go. Caminero himself wasn’t Caminero last year. Ramos one dude closer to closing, has okay velocity himself.
|
1:36 |
Any idea where Travis Snider went? |
1:36 |
: Someone please explain to me why he’s sat against righties recently.
|
1:36 |
Wait, Hahn needed the Stanton mask? |
1:36 |
: Bradley.
|
1:36 |
How soon do you expect Kenley Jansen back? |
1:37 |
: Two weeks.
|
1:37 |
Going back to that DL question, would you rather stash Brandon Beachy or Josh Johnson? Or perhaps Jarrod Parker, AJ Griffin, etc? |
1:37 |
: Griffin then Beachy
|
1:37 |
Worried about Stras’ velocity decline? Should I be selling him on name value right now if I can get an offer that’s not pennies on the dollar? |
1:38 |
: Still like him for this year. Sell in dynasty if you’re out. He’s nearing/at end of TJ honeymoon window.
|
1:38 |
Favorite Hef? |
1:38 |
: anything dunkel hef
|
1:39 |
How weird was that Josh Hamilton press conference? It was like 22 min of awkward time |
1:39 |
: JD next to him staring at a fly on the wall or something too
|
1:40 |
puesdo Sue is good but TG lost their head brewer and now it’s contract brewed in FLA. My vote is Second Fiddle – Fiddlehead |
1:40 |
: Second Fiddle is amazing
|
1:40 |
Regarding Steve Pearce: He’s only had 59 PA and has been hitting well lately. O’s have a massive logjam of DH/LF/RF so he just isn’t getting any playing time. Way too early to give up or buy or anything really. Unless you’re speaking strictly fantasy; in that case, drop him, because he’s going to fight for playing time all year. |
1:40 |
: yeah we walk the line between fantasy and real. But spent ten years headed towards platooning v LHP, and had one good year against righties…
|
1:41 |
tastings = cool because you get to try to many beers, or tastings = uncool because you get so little of any given beer that you’re hardly even appreciating it |
1:41 |
: Love tastings. PIck your faves and then go get a pint.
|
1:41 |
Eno, are you based in Denver? How’d you get such killer interviews with Ottavino? Who’s your favorite player to interview? |
1:42 |
: Northern California, and Ottavino is up there because we talk about everything pitching, and other pitchers. Bumgarner and Hudson always make for great convo, and have different perspectives. Sam Fuld. Sean Doolittle.
|
1:42 |
: I’m not going to catch up today guys
|
1:43 |
:
|
1:43 |
what is batting average to a man as cool as mookie betts? trivial concerns, truly |
1:43 |
I want commenter Dallas in my fantasy league if he makes player decisions based on batting average. |
1:43 |
I have to disparage Betts since I didn’t get any shares |
1:43 |
: epic
|
1:43 |
WESTERN NEW YORK ENO! Pretty sure that guy means Beers of the World in Rochester, which is like a billion hours from Mass and Maine! We’re not all Genny Light drinkers! Anything from Ithaca Brewing, and also anything from Three Heads, espcially the Tre IPA. http://threeheadsbrewing.com/ |
1:44 |
: Distribution is very weird, just thought I’d throw in the Mass in case y’all see them.
|
1:44 |
I saw paid analysts on MLB network or ESPN saying with straight faces that they would rather have Betts than Harper. |
1:44 |
: well come on now
|
1:45 |
I’m living in Germany. Let’s get this shizz started. I can freelance it for a minimal budget. |
1:45 |
: nice
|
1:45 |
Does Arquimedes Caminero finish the season with more SVs than letters in his name? What is the stabilization point on letters in a name? |
1:45 |
: You’d want to do it based on vowels or something, I’d guess.
|
1:46 |
Soler’s at bats look A LOT worse than last year. Why are you still confident in him for 2015? |
1:47 |
: I’ll admit this is true, and that some of the shine has come off my new Soler toy. But! He’s made big adjustments in approach in the past, just look at his minor league history. Start with power, enough contact that he’s not a Chris Davis, and wait for him to get smarter.
|
1:47 |
what do you think of saison dupont? and have you had rodenbach vintage? |
1:47 |
: I love Saison Dupont. Just a great way to introduce the style to people.
|
1:47 |
I started a new character on Morrowing named Eno Sarris. He’s a dark elf wizard/thief who collects alcoholic drinks and stashes them in a cave. |
1:48 |
: Except I have no patience to cellar anything.
|
1:48 |
How much game time would be saved if players rode in from the bullpen on a horse? |
1:48 |
: Except cleaning up the poop
|
1:48 |
NY distro that’s fun: Dark Horse, Jack’s Abby, Central Waters, Grimm/Singlecut from the city (they make it to Albany at least…), Logsdon, Almanac, Anchorage, Midnight Sun; and a ton of int’l stuff — De Dolle, Dieu du Ciel, De Molen, Traquair, Harviestoun, Fuller’s, Drie Fonteinen, the occasional De Cam/Fantome/Cantillon… |
1:48 |
tell me ian desmond pulls his head out of his a$$ |
1:48 |
: yes
|
1:48 |
Addison Russel: adjusting, called up too early, or maybe less good than we thought? |
1:49 |
: adjusting
|
1:49 |
Should I still hold on to Kipnis and Odor? I was pretty excited about that 2B duo headed into the season. |
1:49 |
: Definitely holding Kip. Still want to give Odor a bit more time to waft.
|
1:50 |
I just spent ten minutes doing this. Not sure if more or less productive than typical 10 minutes in the office Drew Pomeranzian Sonny Grayte Dane Hisanori Takahashitsu Jon Lesterrier Fernando Salaskan Malamute |
1:50 |
How much money would you have to be offered for you to consider completely changing proffesions and becoming an executive in some fortune 500 company? |
1:50 |
: See, I love my job, but if someone gave me seven figures to come up with baseball player dog names…
|
1:50 |
Are there certain fantasy writers you go to for “advice?” Not necessarily to do your work for you, but just to check your thinking on a guy? |
1:51 |
: I bug Paul Sporer, sometimes Jason Collette (especially since he was once in the league that I bug him about most), Jeff Zimmerman (mostly about LABR), and my boy, BG co-founder Matt Dennewitz.
|
1:51 |
How does everyone get all these trade offers? The people in my league LITERALLY WONT TRADE ANYONE |
1:51 |
: Yeah that sucks.
|
1:51 |
Your thoughts on Rubby De La Rosa? looks like he is using his changeup more. Is he becoming a pitcher rather than a thrower? |
1:52 |
: Slider getting more whiffs! That’s the big deal. Watch the command, that’s the last frontier.
|
1:52 |
Favorite beer in the Denver area? |
1:52 |
: Crooked Stave sours?
|
1:52 |
Eno, would there be a reason to worry about deGrom’s horizontal release point? According to Brooks, it’s kinda been all over the place this year? |
1:53 |
: Must mean he’s moving on Rubber. I worry more about vertical (like Wood’s).
|
1:53 |
FYI on Uehara he actually had a discussion with Hanigan asking him to call for more fastballs |
1:53 |
: hah.
|
1:53 |
What’s your favorite type of sour — bright lactic acidity, balsamic depth from pedio, or funky “sourness” from brett? |
1:53 |
: Probably a tie between first two, but I really like the pedio “jam.”
|
1:54 |
: Dammit. I didn’t make it. sorry guys. We’ll do lightning next week. I gotta run!!
|
1:54 |
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeno is |
1:54 |
a punk rocker |
1:54 |
eno is |
1:54 |
a punk rocker |
1:54 |
We’re silhouettes by the light of the moon. |
1:55 |
![]() Thanks Eno. |
With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
