Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 7/9/15

Comment From DeadlineDealer
Given Alex Gordon’s injury – David Price and Yoenis Cespedes for Kyle Zimmer, Brandon Finnegan, and Raul Mondesi, Jr. – who hangs up first?

12:05
Eno Sarris: Detroit. I’ll believe they selling when they selling.

12:05
Eno Sarris: Oh now I’m sad. Sporer’s dog died. Curtis!

12:06
Eno Sarris: He did 80 last year so I think he can get to 100-120 this year. That’s another 50-70 innings. Those will be valuable. I really like him. He’s probably also gone in a trade for a guy like Hamels, if it happens.

12:06
Comment From Ryan
What do you do with a guy like Vincent Velasquez? It’s pretty clear Houston is going to have to limit his innings going forward. Do you try to sell him after a few more starts or hold?

12:07
Eno Sarris: Oops. Don’t blame Cover it Live, that was all me.

12:07
Comment From What the Butler Saw
Everyone’s favorite SP, Carlos Carrasco…do you see any kind of innings limit for him, especially if CLEV can’t get back into the playoff race?

12:07
Eno Sarris: *Maybe* if they can’t. But I think they can and with 135 IP last year, he can at least get to 160 this year, and with a history of starting, I think they’d push that to 180.

12:08
Comment From marc
I know youre a big Caminero fan, but how concerned should we be after his recent struggles?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Gotta look at the overall numbers when it comes to relievers.

Comment From Shubbles
Over/under: my dusty or my krusty?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Krusty is gross. I’ll take dusty.

12:08
Comment From Larry
So how many pints does a keg of Nelson hold, and how many of those went to you?

12:09
Eno Sarris: 55 and since my friends are all old and parent-y, I’d guess about 30. With maybe 5 left in the thing. I gave up.

12:09
Comment From ManBearPuig
Is “I heard a pop” now the most overused phrase in sports? Seems like every player who goes down says it. It’s like yeah dude, we all saw it, you’re hurt.

I choked twice at FG Live in DC. First, I did research, found a bottle I wanted to try…and then ordered something from the tap because I had a hard time communicating with the bartender. Second, I wasted my question on the DH, in a failed attempt to plug my Community Post from April http://www.fangraphs.com/co… (and please don’t just lude this post! you can reject it if you wish)

12:11
Eno Sarris: That moment with the bartender is underratedly stressful.

12:11
Comment From Scooby
Is Ian Kennedy underloved and underowned, or just a nice streamer when he’s pitching at home? He’s available in my 12-team mixed redraft. Thanks, Eno!

12:11
Eno Sarris: I dont trust him on the road.

12:12
Comment From Jaws
I remember you not being an Iwakuma fan, but I forget why. Do you think he can still be an above average pitcher going forward?

12:14
Eno Sarris: Mostly I just worried about his health, so I’ve already been vindicated. He was oft-injured in Japan, and was down to 83 mph at one point, and people thought he was done with a shoulder problem. He’s now down to his worst velocity of his career… but he’s still got good command and is rosterable. But at 88, am I spending to get him? Only pennies.

12:14
Comment From MSW
Too many two-start pitchers for my start limit this week! Who do I sit? Rubby @NYM, E-Rod vs NYY, Chen vs WAS or Hendricks vs CWS?

12:14
Eno Sarris: That Met offense…. Rubby?

12:15
Comment From Eddie
I’ve got Francisco Liriano and Michael Pineda in my rotation. Both really productive so far, both with loads of injury risk. Should I try to deal them for more proven guys or just hold on? It feels like NY is going to limit Pineda’s innings, which scares me, and Liriano has gone over 165 innings just once in his career.

12:15
Eno Sarris: Oh man it might be super sneaky smart to package both for the best or second-best pitcher on a team that’s just out of the playoffs and needs depth. Take their worst pitcher back in the deal so that it doesn’t look like a two for one.

12:15
Comment From Cason Jolette
Which pitchers, currently not closing games, has the chance to be a top tier closer in the second half? Giles, Capps, Smith…?

12:17
Eno Sarris: They pulled back on trading Papelbon, dunno why. Otherwise it would obviously be Giles. Melancon has pushed his velocity back up. Strop would be my pick, actually. I know he just blew one, but that slider has the best whiff rate in baseball and he has more velocity than Romo. Just worse command. Other best candidates are Delabar, Smith, and Strickland/Romo. In that order? Smith ahead of Delabar maybe.

12:18
Comment From Michael Kay
You’re welcome

12:18
Eno Sarris: Thank you! Yesterday was fun. Dave Flemming and Michael Kay, talking up separate pieces on separate game casts. One of those “couldn’t have imagined that five years ago” moments.

12:19
Comment From The Sisssssser
Should Cesar Hernandez sustain certain significance for steals-starved souls?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Yeah I guess so. He’s more .270 than .300, and he has no power, but he steals bases at second base.

12:19
Comment From Don M
What is Yasiel Puig?

12:20
Eno Sarris: A great player that’s going to have an all-time great season one these years, and will always piss everyone off, all the time.

12:20
Comment From Hurkle
Please explain to me how Gonzalez Germen can be so good and so bad. Wish Cubbies had given him a longer leash when I look at the FIP/xFIP. Colorado does not seem like the place to break out.

12:20
Eno Sarris: He’s one-pitch pitcher I guess. The changeup has the best whiff rate in baseball most years, but he doesn’t trust his fastball. For everyone that drops him, there’s someone picking him up!

12:20
Comment From Danny
The leaders in O-Swing% this season for pitchers is practically a list of some of the best pitchers in the game… besides Kyle Gibson, who is 4th with 36.1%. If Gibson could locate better, could he be an elite pitcher?

12:20
Eno Sarris: I think if he just threw his non-fastballs more…

12:21
Comment From Eric
Would you sell high on Puig? I realize he hasn’t hit his peak, but with the clubhouse all seemingly against him, and his fat-headed reputation, I see a poor second half in his future. Thoughts?

12:21
Eno Sarris: No I don’t think those things matter to him. If you’re that guy, you don’t care.

12:21
Comment From Guest
Does Billy Beane deserve another round of criticism for the Donaldson trade? We initially were confused, but Donaldson is an MVP type once again and Beane has escaped somehow.

12:21
Eno Sarris: It was never about year one. Graveman looks good enough for a major league rotation, Nolin might give him two pitchers, and hey, look, Lawrie’s not bad. He was re-stocking.

12:22
Comment From ctw
leading keeper league by huge margin. Own deGrom but likely won’t have slots to keep him (finish higher, get fewer slots). Mets owner lower in standings has Syndergaard, who will likely qualify for our minors list this offsesason. Worth trying to send him deGrom (whom he could keep) for Syndergaard (whom I could keep)?

12:22
Eno Sarris: Yes. See if he’ll throw in a useful veteran, even a streamer/bench type, so that you can make sure to get your innings.

12:22
Comment From Dirky
Hey Kiley!!! Thoughts on Callix Crabbe down on the farm? Was thinking 87,000FV but he’s not projectable so and 42/147 hit tool? THX

12:22
Comment From Walt
Is Jason Kipnis going to keep this up all year? Or is he being fueled by that ridiculous BABIP?

12:23
Eno Sarris: Some part of that BABIP is not popping the ball up and hitting the ball hard. He made some swing changes, too. So I like that the projection systems are regressing him to .330 going forward. I think he’s a .280 hitter.

12:23
Comment From How Far is Too Far?
Are you generally okay with a philosophy of moving pitching for young hitting in a keeper league? When it became clear I was out of it, I moved, like, almost all of my established pitchers and picked up minors guys. So I’ve got a core of Altuve, Arenado, Stanton, Pederson, Polanco, and Machado. I feel awesome about that part. But will I be able to field a rotation next couple of years from Cole, Urias, Eduado, Berrios, Gausman, Bundy? Or is it fools’ gold?

12:24
Eno Sarris: Perfect.

12:24
Comment From Kris
no Stanton in your dynasty top 10?

12:25
Eno Sarris: He’s in that huddle for 10th. Honestly, though, Correa has shown so much in such a short time, and Abreu is pretty steady eddie, and Stanton strikes out a lot and has been injured a few times — yes on HBPs, but HBPs are sticky — so I think it’s fair to call that a scrum. It’s also fair to leave Betts behind that group. Miggie should also still be in the top 12 still.

If Padres sell, who do you see most likely getting moved: Cashner, Shields, or Ross? (ignoring Kennedy cause that’s boring). And who should teams want the most?

12:28
Eno Sarris: Cashner has one year left, Ross has two years. Doubt it’s Shields, given performance and contract. I bet they trade Cash or Ross, depending on which gets them more back. Might be Ross is seen as more attainable?

Is Dyson a viable replacement for owners who just lost A Gordon? Can he be Billy Burns?

12:31
Eno Sarris: He could be Billy Burns if you’re talking True Talent Billy Burns and not the one we’ve seen so far.

12:31
Comment From Brandon Aint Belting
There’s no big breakout coming, is there? Ever? WHO CAN WE TURN TO?!? I’ll never get Rizzo or one of the other big first base names. Who’s in the minors we can look to as a potential fringey first base keeper by years’ end?

12:31
Eno Sarris: There aren’t many fringe first base prospects. Jon Singleton is the one that comes to mind.

12:31
Comment From OnSight
So new Beach House, Tame Impala, Mac DeMarco, and Destroyer have leaked in the last couple days? You listening or anti-leak?

Eno Sarris:

12:33
Comment From sb
1B prospect is almost a paradox. good hitters are prospects at other positions and get moved to 1B because their bat is so much better than their glove, or they simply cant fake it in a corner OF

12:33
Eno Sarris: It’s almost like second base, where there aren’t a ton of 1b prospects and they get stuck there. Except second basemen happen because they’re too slow for short, often.

12:33
Comment From Johnny5Alive
eno, you can admit it, i know you were hanging with bill walton at the santa clara shows. its ok

12:34
Eno Sarris: No but they did show him on the jumbo tron and I thought that was weird. I’d like to be known, that’s good for my job, but maybe not that known. I was just having a good time with my pops. Don’t put me on the jumbotron.

12:34
Comment From marc
So you’re not in on Burns? He should be rostered tho, rite?

12:35
Eno Sarris: Sure, and so should Dyson, but I’m not depending on the .300+ batting average.

12:35
Comment From Josh G
Better SP stash, Aaron Nola or Jose Berrios?

Should Mike Montgomery lay off the 4 seamer and become Sinker,Cutter,Changeup guy? That Changeup is sexy

What’s your favorite baseball article of all time?

12:38
Eno Sarris: This isn’t hubris, just being honest, the thing that came to mind was that Moss interview. If I could write something like that every week I’d feel awesome. I’m sure if I thought longer I’d have a better answer and it’d be someone else’s article… I mean that Sullivan thing on sending Alex Gordon was great… that comes to mind now.

12:38
Comment From Samuel
Does the Braves moving Folty to the pen mean that they see his future as a closer?

12:39
Eno Sarris: The change isn’t good, so I guess they just don’t see him as a starter. Whether he’s a closer or not depends on the future.

Comment From Girk
Thoughts on Manny Banuelos? Love those post hype pedigree guyz

12:40

12:40
Comment From Mr. Met
If you are Alderson, what is your plan to improve this team before the offense finally kills off any chance of competing this season?

12:40
Eno Sarris: If it’s me, I’m going after a shortstop. I’d see if I could use pitching that wasn’t in the major leagues.

12:40
Comment From Hank
The best beer on a hot day mowing the lawn is the Acme California IPA. Not the best beer mind you, but the best hot day beer.

Comment From Germans dont really do IPA
Seriously, eight months in Germany, I don’t ever really find it here. But then, I don’t really know much about beer. What’s the deal–it’s all ale or lager? And then what other styles might be close to IPA that I can find in Germany? I like ’em hoppy. They like ’em wheaty or malty. Which is fine, but…they’re doing hoppy somewhere, right?

12:42
Eno Sarris: Hit up @ohkiv on twitter, I think he’s been to Germany more recently than me. I’ve heard inklings of it happening, but the best I had when I was in Germany was dunkelweisse and dark lagers.

Comment From Jason
If Boston is 7-8 games out by the end of the month, do you see them selling off guys like Hanley just as they did a few years ago with Adrian and Crawford?

12:44
Eno Sarris: Unsure. They’ve been turning it around. If the rooks develop, they’ll probably want the veterans around.

12:44
Comment From lunch
markakis still has zero homers, and yet the projections still think he’ll have a league average season. why does no one care about this as much as me?

12:45
Eno Sarris: yeah but he’s been league average without any homers, so projecting him to hit four more and be league average some more doesn’t seem crazy to me

12:45
Comment From Pirates Hurdles
I’m surprised that no one here mentioned that phantom foul ball call in AJ’s start Tuesday night. Norris missed the ball by over a foot for what should have been an inning ending strike 3and its not reviewable, yet a millisecond loss of contact with 2nd base on a steal is???

12:45
Eno Sarris: People might only have enough energy for outrage on a selective basis.

12:45
Comment From DDSP
no, i don’t want no Scribz a Scribz is a guy who can’t get no holds 4 me

12:47
Comment From Cory S.
A lot of A’s players are having break out/career years (Vogt, Phegley, Semien, Reddick, Burns) and they are still only 18th in WAR. What more can they do?

Eno Sarris: Play defense? Get better luck / improve the pen?

12:47
Comment From Kiley Called It

Comment From Josh G
Gregory Polanco was just dropped in my league. Would you drop Fowler to add him as a bench bat due to the upside, or is hope for a turnaround foolish?

12:48
Eno Sarris: Yes I would do that.

12:48
Comment From Maxamuz

12:48
Eno Sarris: Like an elephant on a slingshot.

12:50
Comment From Okay I Get it
I mean, I KNOW that about first base “prospects.” I get it. But I’m looking for a dude one might reasonably expect to move and stick there. Speaking of Singleton–what’s the giant discrepancy in k% between AAA and MLB? Is he just pressing, worried about demotion, mental stuff, etc? Or is it as simple as MLB pitchers have way better breaking balls?

12:51
Eno Sarris: Sorry, not trying to talk down to you! As for what you’re asking for, maybe DJ Peterson is your man. Not doing great, but depending on what Seattle does, he could end up in bigs, and probably not at third base. Singleton? No ideas without really digging in. I mean it’s crazy that he improved his strikeout rate down there and then came up and his swinging strike rate is worse, and he’s K-ing 50% of the time. I don’t get it. Might just be a bust.

12:51
Comment From Jake Arrietas Elbow
How long before I explode?

12:52
Eno Sarris: I’d be selling in a dynasty league if I was out of it.

12:52
Comment From Three-Finger Mordecai
Can Devon Travis keep on doing what he’s doing? He looks good and the stats don’t lie, but I keep waiting for him to falter but he continues to rake. Is he another hitter who is better than his scouting reports?

12:52
Eno Sarris: Scouting reports don’t love small dudes, but once you make it happened in the big leagues, I think size matters less. I *know* that’s true for pitchers, and it could be true for hitters.

12:52
Comment From John
If you are the Jays, who are you more likely to trade: Norris, Castro or Hoffman?

12:53
Eno Sarris: Unsure Hoffman gives you much, or Castro. So if I’m getting something really nice, Norris. If I’m getting something small, Hoffman.

12:53

Comment From Walt
Have we waited long enough for the big Ian Desmond turnaround? For the ROS, for those of us tired of waiting, would you rather have A. Escobar, Holt (SS eligible in my league), Aybar, or Segura

12:55
Eno Sarris: .250/10 is about the best he can do going forward, so if you don’t need those homers, I’ll take Segura.

12:55
Comment From Franklin
You could say Pablo Sandoval is going to move to 1B. He might be a target for that guy…

12:55
Eno Sarris: Could happen. Napoli a free agent, not playing every day.

12:55
Comment From Madigon
Cubs gonna stick with Addison Russell but he’s been having it ROUGH. Expect improvement or wait til next yr?

12:56
Eno Sarris: Still 21 and showing power. I think he’ll take a jump forward next year.

12:56
Comment From Three-Finger Mordecai
Preston Tucker seems to be much better than the prospect hounds anticipated. Kiley gave him a 40. He seems to be a really good hitter. What are your thoughts on him and how do you see his future playing out?

12:57
Eno Sarris: What he’s doing overall seems sustainable but it’s worth pointing out that — even in a tiny sample — he’s been unplayable against lefties.

12:57
Comment From Jason

Keeper League: Mookie Betts or Yasiel Puig?

12:58
Eno Sarris: ooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhh

1:00
Eno Sarris: I think Puig is going to hit 30 one year and I think Betts would top out at 20 unless he has one Ellsbury year and I doubt he does. But will Puig steal more than 12 ever? If you believe that pop-ups will always be a problem for Betts — and he’s still hitting them now, even if a little bit less often — then you might cap his batting average below Puig and give it to Puig.

How do you improve a team like the cubs at this time? Could bolster rotation or CF, but past that the Cubs main flaws are inherent to the risk of fielding a roster of young kids. I can see a world in which they make a big move but that extra 2 WAR doesn’t make up for all of Russel, Bryant, and Soler having adjustment issues through the back half.

1:01
Eno Sarris: Even though they haven’t been scoring runs, I think I’d focus on getting a pitcher. Especially one that they would own next year.

Comeback questions, what are your thought ROS for J.Hamilton and Cain?

1:06
Eno Sarris: Ug and ug. I thought Hamilton could maybe .250/15 rest of season, and that’s still possible, but Cain… he was leaving everything up in the first outing. It was all better in the second outing. Velocity was better, more sink… Maybe a chance.

To fix the Mets offense, why not Jay Bruce? His power plays in any park, no? (Assuming Sandy can actually spend the $ to pay him)

1:08
Comment From Eddie Brock
What do you think of Cody Anderson? The change looks beautiful and the fastball has good velo, but his minor league history is just ok.

1:09

1:09
Comment From a eskpert
Why are people so worried about Carter Capps delivery? It seems to me that it’d be very very very difficult to replicate without totally losing the ability to throw strikes or enduring constant ankle injuries. Plus, Carter Capps already throws really hard (FB: 98.0), so is it really giving him that much of a leg up (pun intended) as people think?

1:10
Eno Sarris: It’s helping him, yes. But you’re right. Look at the other jump-steppers: Javy Guerra, Jordan Walden, Tim Lincecum. All have command issues, because jumping like that is tough to replicate.

1:10
Comment From El guapo 86
SF bullpen: Casilla has the role and the velo but Romo has the K’s (33% vs 23%) and the far superior peripherals. Do the luck dragons catch up with Casilla? Strickland or Ositch in the picture (maybe next year)?

1:11
Eno Sarris: Strickland will be relevant for that role soon, I keep telling him that. The Giants were reluctant to put Romo in the role for a long time, probably because of velocity and ROOGY-ism. Does Casilla have the role? It seems very much up in the air right now.

Eno Sarris: If you see something listed wrong, hit me up.

1:14

For Beergraphs, have you ever thought about giving a category for type… i.e., year-round, seasonal, limited edition, variation… it is difficult for some of the brewery boards to wade through all the different variations and beers that no longer exist.

1:14
Eno Sarris: Yes. Oh that might be an easy one. We could have a filter where you filter out any beer that hasn’t had a certain amount of check-ins in the last x weeks.

With Brian Dozier’s pull rate being what it is, do you see a dramatic decline in stats to be more likely for him than other power/speed options at second such as Kolten Wong, or Rougned Odor? How much longer can we expect him to succeed at this rate?

1:17
Eno Sarris: he’s also a high ball hitter in a low ball league, with a bad pop up rate. I have a feeling he’ll start falling off soon into his 30s.

Even with his 31% K rate, Soler is just so strong that he theoretically can sustain a higher BABIP..although, I’m guessing his LD rate isn’t too realistic at 28%ish or whatever it’s at. Would you bet on some of those line drives going for FB or GB? AAAND if he finishes the year with 10 – 12 HR and a .260ish AVG will his draft value plummet next year, or will the raw talent keep him in the top 12 rounds?

On Cashner ROS, he’s been pitching better of late but seems to be getting hurt by some tough breaks (bad pen work and very low LOB%). Is it all really just framing? The key 2-out walk to start the debacle in the 7th last night was on a 3-2 pitch that he didn’t get the call on. He seems to have curbed the HRs a bit (though the Polanco double in that same inning just missed). Do you still believe? Can we trust him more than say Ubaldo, Hahn, or even Desclafani?

1:34
Eno Sarris: I still trust the stuff. His secondary pitches are more average than plus, and that limits his ace like upside, but his fastball is plus.

HT imo represents the shift away from “old school DIPAs” like Pliny, which was the pinnacle of first-wave hop bombs. different water profile + more emphasis on late hopping + conan yeast, which is fruitier and more expressive than the yeast used in west coast IPAs. the New England IPA has only gotten fruitier since, but I think there’s a pretty big divergence.

My season is over in a standard AL-only Roto keeper league, trying to decide on keeper options. For 2016 ONLY, would you rather have Archer for $9 or Machado for $23? If they were closer in cost if take machado all day, but I’m not sure as it stands.
