Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 8/20/15
| 11:39 |
: Top ten Marley songs day, deal with it.
|
| 11:51 |
:
|
| 12:01 |
Nice Crawford piece this morning. Do you think he can be a valid top 5 SS for next couple years? or is he sell-high worthy in dynasty leagues? |
| 12:01 |
: His personal batting coach left town and he took off. He’s now adjusted and adjusted back in the same season, and he was in the bigs a little early because of his glove. I’d be comfortable with projecting him for 15-18 homers next year.
|
| 12:02 |
What can the Padres (and Padres fans) expect from Travis Jankowski? |
| 12:03 |
: I think the projections are pessimistic on his batting average. He should make contact and run, but where? Fourth outfielder?
|
| 12:03 |
Reports of Michael Fulmer getting a call… What do you think he can bring in a couple of his first starts? |
| 12:04 |
: Should have the strikeouts but will he have the command he’s showing in the minors right now? Maybe not.
|
| 12:04 |
Why haven’t people fallen in love with Austin Hedges yet? His defense is better than advertised and he’s starting to hit a little bit. |
| 12:05 |
: I enjoy talking to him, he’s full of youthful exuberance and a great framer/defender. Have to see some power and contact first though.
|
| 12:05 |
hi eno how are you eno thanks eno you’re the best eno |
| 12:05 |
: well there aren’t a lot of enos
|
| 12:05 |
hello eno! people have been talking lately about the WC playoff game being unfair, potentially putting the second-best team in the league in a one-game playoff while teams much worse can safely wait in the DS. why not have the same 5 eligible teams, but then have the teams with the two worst records play in a one-gamer, regardless of whether they won the division or not? cheers to beers btw! |
| 12:05 |
: My solution: cut a week of spring training and make it, at the very least, a three-game series.
|
| 12:06 |
Eno Wan Kenobi you are my only hope. Which two SPs would you pick out of Alex Wood, Bauer, McCullers, and Holland for the ROS? |
| 12:06 |
: McCullers and….. Wood or Holland. I would have said Wood until I saw Holland was 93.6 last night.
|
| 12:06 |
How many players area ahead of Kris Bryant in a long-term keeper league? |
| 12:06 |
: four or five?
|
| 12:06 |
No Woman No Cry or GTFU |
| 12:06 |
: uh oh
|
| 12:06 |
Wicked Weed just released their Freak of Nature DIPA in bottles. all the hops |
| 12:07 |
: send me some and one of their sours thank you please
|
| 12:07 |
A Jamaican/Caribbean restaurant just opened up near me. Beside Jerk Chicken/pork, what else should I know about? |
| 12:07 |
: You must have ackee and saltfish and fried dumplings. That’s the breakfast food that I crave. Also, patties are great.
|
| 12:07 |
: Patties = cheezit crust with meat insides.
|
| 12:07 |
How do I explain to my spouse that I only created an Ashley Madison account because I thought it was a Madison Bumgarner fansite? |
| 12:08 |
: “It’s Ashley Madison Bumgarner, babe.”
|
| 12:08 |
I keep reading that Joc is about to lose playing time. Do I drop Joc for someone like Khris Davis in a redraft? |
| 12:08 |
: I wouldn’t.
|
| 12:08 |
Going to see Giolito pitch tonight – what’s something I should watch for? |
| 12:09 |
: I’d watch for the changeup. He can be good without it, but I’d like to know how good that pitch is.
|
| 12:10 |
Excuse me while I light my splif |
| 12:10 |
:
|
| 12:11 |
Thoughts on Greg Bird’s potential? Can he hit enough to stick at 1B after Tex contract expires, and any chance he can play LF adequately enough on occasion to get him AB’s when tex returns to lineup? |
| 12:12 |
: Not this year. Carlos Beltran doing too well to lose time. He’s an injury replacement.
|
| 12:12 |
Obviously it’s super early to see if DD’s hiring actually changes the entire course of the front office, but from Dave’s article, we can guess that their decisions are going to be at least a bit more grounded in scouting than they had been, going forward. Is Boston the first team to make this kind of a shift (perceived or actual) from more of an analytics-based team to more of a scouting-based team? |
| 12:12 |
Why do articles about Boston bring out the worst in everyone? We usually have a nice little community, but things get real ugly when the Sox are brought up. |
| 12:13 |
: You know they hired diPoto too, even in the interim. I think the figurehead is a little overrated. Think about the offensive coordinator hired to be a head football coach. Do those teams get really awesome at offense or do they lose a great offensive coordinator who has to try and run the whole team suddenly? DD may have a scouting background, but he’ll listen to the numbers wonks.
|
| 12:14 |
: As for the rest… just happens I guess. Certain communities are more active online, and it’s not even about popularity of the team always.
|
| 12:14 |
What pitch grip is #1 on your list to get? |
| 12:14 |
: Pedro? Nomo?
|
| 12:14 |
Only pick one: Steely Dan song |
| 12:14 |
: Black Cow?
|
| 12:14 |
Do you believe in JBJ? |
| 12:14 |
: For an empty OBP on offense and great defense, sure. I’d rather have him as my CF than LF.
|
| 12:15 |
|
| 12:15 |
: That was me while working on my Crawford post last night, because I hadn’t included June in any of my tables. Then I put June in and OH MY WOW NOW I HAVE THE VAPORS
|
| 12:15 |
is jeff samardzija’s slider to blame for his rough 2015? .208 opposing AVG last yr., up to .292 this year. he was just dropped in my 12-team league, trying to figure out if he’s worth a pickup. can he get hot to finish the season? |
| 12:17 |
: Maybe. He was throwing a cutter and some people think having both screws both pitches. Now he’s throwing the cutter less.
|
| 12:17 |
Best Marley song ever. |
| 12:17 |
We be Jammin’ today |
| 12:17 |
When will the press stop referring to restaurants as “concepts” and specific focuses of restaurants as “programs”? |
| 12:17 |
This here is a gen-yoo-ine Eno Sarris chat. Not one of those fancy symposiums you fellers with the glasses like to attend. |
| 12:17 |
: Okay we’re starting out strange, that’s a good sign.
|
| 12:18 |
Would love to hear your thoughts on Nomar Mazara. He killed it in AA and is already off to a hot start at Round Rock. Any chance we get to see him in September? If not when do you think we will see him? |
| 12:18 |
: I love him so much. Maybe not this year, but he’s going to be relevant in all league next year.
|
| 12:18 |
Eno my friend and I have been playing a free fanduel match everyday for the entire season. Loser buys beer brewing ingredients. Season ends Friday (crazily enough my lead is only 1 game) so we can have a batch ready for October baseball. What’s a good fall/baseball playoff beer? |
| 12:19 |
: Oktoberfest of course!
|
| 12:19 |
Is Carlos Rodon finally putting it together? What kind of keeper value does he hold? |
| 12:20 |
: K-BB still a problem. Still exciting, but more long term than this year.
|
| 12:20 |
Keep forever points league – I have chance to win now, but am definitely going to need another pitcher. Darvish/Giolito too much for Lester? |
| 12:21 |
: Oof. I like lester but that’s an ace above him second half next year, and a guy with ace-like potential. I’d look to sell Gio and keep Yu, since you selling low on Yu.
|
| 12:21 |
One of my favorite Bob Marley songs is Mr. Brown. |
| 12:21 |
: Oh damn that’s a good one. Didn’t show on my list yet. Here’s a tie for number nine.
|
| 12:21 |
:
|
| 12:22 |
Who’s the Mets opening day shortstop next year? |
| 12:23 |
: God it sort of seems like they’re just waiting around for Rosario, whos’ not 20 yet or in Double-A. Doubt they sign Desmond. Maybe Reyes if he doesn’t cost a ton.
|
| 12:23 |
Blake Snell looks like he’s arriving…what is your take? Can he make it this year or for spring training? |
| 12:24 |
: He only has like 30 more innings tops, I’d guess. Maybe he comes up in the pen to taste the bigs, but I think he’s more relevant next year. They don’t really bring guys up quickly.
|
| 12:25 |
Is Daniel Murphy better at baseball than Babe Ruth was? Obviously Murphy isnt more productive but is he more skilled? I told my Dad this and he said i was drunk (which I was but still…) |
| 12:25 |
: I think you’re probably taking things to an extreme. But I wouldn’t be surprised if Ruth would be more Dunn like in today’s game. I wasn’t alive then, but I’m fairly certain he couldn’t have also been a pitcher in today’s game at the very least.
|
| 12:26 |
Would you rather be a Merman, or a guy with a walrus head like in the Mos Eisley Cantina? |
| 12:26 |
: Merman, I kinda like the water and that dude is ugly.
|
| 12:26 |
Is Jorge Soler droppable in a 5×5 12-team mixed redraft? His ownership rates are still so high, but it feels like everyone’s still waiting for a breakout that just isn’t coming this year. ROS, is he appreciably better than widely-available guys like Marcell Ozuna or Avisail Garcia? |
| 12:27 |
: If you had named better outfielders, I could see it. But those guys are pretty much in the same exact boats, and I like Soler’s talent level the best.
|
| 12:27 |
You think Dodgers show off Urias late this year? |
| 12:28 |
: Some in that clubhouse thought it was possible on Tuesday. He had 87 innings last year, around 70 now…. they do need to push him to at least 100 so that he can be useful sooner rather than later.
|
| 12:28 |
Matt Duffy or Logan Forstythe for September? And will Pedroia be better than both when he comes back? |
| 12:29 |
: Pedroia first. Duffy actually makes more contact than Forsythe, and they both projected for about 5 stolen bases plus homers, so take your pick.
|
| 12:29 |
Do you worry about Chris Davis continuing to be inconsistent in the future and streaky due to the swing and miss in his game, or can he consistently challenge for the HR title while keeping his average above the mendoza line (with a good OBP)? |
| 12:30 |
: I think he’s a slow adjuster, basically. Look at how long it took him to figure out the big leagues the first time. Then they figured him out back and it took forever again to get going. He’ll probably just have good half-season and bad half-seasons going forward until it’s just all bad and he doesn’t have the athleticism to adjust back again.
|
| 12:31 |
: My old song entry in the Marley top ten, officially number 8
|
| 12:32 |
Hey Eno! Favorite Roxy Music album? |
| 12:33 |
: Siren or Avalon. Avalon.
|
| 12:33 |
Deez Nuts? We have a presidential candidate in our midst! Welcome, Mr. Nuts. |
| 12:33 |
: POLLING AT NINE PERCENT NATIONALLY
|
| 12:33 |
Do you know where I can find league averages for horizontal and vertical movement by pitch type? |
| 12:33 |
| 12:33 |
cherington should’ve signed OK Computer instead of Pablo Hanley |
| 12:33 |
thing about a three-game WC series, you’re still giving a better team the short shrift by making them play a still pretty random 3-gamer and exhausting them more than a division winner. reward division winners to keep division races alive, but seed based on record regardless. |
| 12:34 |
CHEEZIT CHEEZIT CHEEZIT |
| 12:34 |
: nice
|
| 12:34 |
Please rank the dogfishhead “X Minute” beers in order of preference. My order is 75, 90, 60…. 120 |
| 12:34 |
: I’d move 60 ahead of 90 but 75 is teh besst
|
| 12:34 |
Kris Bryant is (a) already a top-tier baseball player, (b) getting lucky breaks but still quite good considering his age/experience, (c) quite overrated and some BABIP regression away from being Joc P |
| 12:35 |
: a) not going to steal like this b) might have lower BABIPs but c) should have more power still coming to offset BABIP regression.
|
| 12:35 |
Will the Orioles use their surplus 2016 salary to bolster their pitching staff or extend Machado or will they spend it all on Chris Davis because dingers? |
| 12:36 |
: I doubt they use it on Davis because that park breeds dingers. They look for power on the scrap heap.
|
| 12:36 |
Do you expect to see Harvey’s and Syndergaard’s innings limited in September, in hopes that they are able to stay fresh for the playoffs? |
| 12:36 |
: I expect a six man rotation.
|
| 12:36 |
Can Eovaldi be a SP4 next season or better? |
| 12:36 |
: Actually with this new mix, where he’s pushed the splitter almost equal to the four-seamer, I think we may finally see something from him.
|
| 12:37 |
Who to drop? Gausman, Wood, Rodon… Gausy seems to miss his spots, constantly, his arsenal looks so vanilla sometimes. Rodon looks like he might have figured it out and Wood’s SwStrike rate is abysmal. Thoughts? |
| 12:39 |
: Tough one. I’m stuck on Wood right now. Just interviewed him. He moved on the rubber, and I think that might help him with the breaking ball. But that was like six starts ago and the Ks have begun to dwindle again. In a redraft I might drop Rodon but he has the best upside of the group. God I guess it’s Wood. Gausman’s curve has potential to make it work, and his K-bb has been better recently.
|
| 12:39 |
ENO! CAMINEROS BACK!! |
| 12:40 |
: love that dude
|
| 12:40 |
Have you ever considered moving to flosstana to become a mon tycoon? |
| 12:40 |
: huh
|
| 12:40 |
Some ridiculously attractive girl from my high school is dating Ike Davis. I’m not sure who I am more envious of. |
| 12:40 |
: Well definitely not her. He’s hurt and his swing looks terrible and he has one foot out of ball.
|
| 12:41 |
What are some things that I can do to spice up my relationship with the corporate world? It’s getting quite boring. I enjoy providing music via humming while in the elevator with someone whom I do not know. Any other tips? |
| 12:41 |
: Strange ties, bow ties, crazy socks, wink at people of the same sex at strange moments, be loud at interesting moments at water cooler stories…
|
| 12:41 |
Also hitting 101.6 in the 7th inning… |
| 12:42 |
: Yeah that was nutty. I mean sure it’s straight but at 102
|
| 12:42 |
Must be a work filter blocking the Marley videos. Can you name them in text with each post? |
| 12:42 |
:
|
| 12:43 |
: 10. Crazy Baldhead
9. Easy Skanking 9a. She’s Gone 8. Put it on 7. African Herbsman |
| 12:44 |
Early in the season I believe you said Ubaldo was a changed pitcher. Has he reverted back to his old ways or can he right the ship (with a double start next week)? |
| 12:45 |
: He switched almost completely to sinker/split and has had better command because of it. He’s not great, but he’s a decent deep leaguer IMo.
|
| 12:45 |
Brooklyn Brewery: legit or coasting on trendy branding? |
| 12:45 |
: I like Sorachi Ace!
|
| 12:45 |
what makes DFH 75 so good? have had 61, not tasty. |
| 12:45 |
: 61 is some sort of other thing with grape must if I remember right, also did not like. 75 is just a little stronger and thicker than 60 and less than 95. It’s my goldilocks of the series.
|
| 12:45 |
Kaya! |
| 12:46 |
: O that’s coming
|
| 12:46 |
On a scale of one to being-a-mets-fan, how worried should I be about deGrom seemingly abandoning his slider? He says he “feels great”, is this a subtle way for the team to not limit his innings as much? |
| 12:46 |
: It’s like three games gone now. I’m a little worried, but it could just be part of the cat and mouse.
|
| 12:46 |
Dave Cameron recently said that Upton’s is the offseason FA contract that the team’s going to regret the most? Do you agree? |
| 12:47 |
: I dunno. I guess he has some collapse possibility in that K% and swSTR% and the speed will go and he doesn’t look great in the field, but he has no-doubt power, beyond what I see in his ISO right now, so as always, it depends on actual cash.
|
| 12:47 |
OK, but I feel compelled to point out that a Merman doesn’t have a….thing. |
| 12:48 |
: Oh crud well then I guess I’ll take the walrus head, at least he has some musical ability, right?
|
| 12:48 |
: Oh I should have looked, I had Kaya six!
|
| 12:48 |
:
|
| 12:49 |
Eno! I need help. I just started teaching college courses. How do I keep from copulating with all of these beautiful 18 and 19 year olds?! HELP!!! |
| 12:49 |
: Well it’s legal and if you’re not married… it’s not great by morals though, so I suggest this: talk to them. That should handle that.
|
| 12:49 |
Any faith in Nick Tropeano? Both as a deity and mid rotation arm |
| 12:50 |
: I’ll take the over on his strikeout rate projections, for sure. Nice swinging strike rates, good command, nice park for the occasional hanger.
|
| 12:51 |
That moment when you at the Brooklyn Cyclones game and someone made a mess on one of the toilet seats. Oh, also, Jean Segura is ma boi. |
| 12:51 |
: Well that’s not the place to do this
|
| 12:51 |
:
nap time |
| 12:51 |
WTH should I do with Anthony Rendon? Would you rather have Rendon, Forsythe, or Semien ROS? |
| 12:51 |
: Rendon
|
| 12:52 |
Does Noah Syndergaard have the hottest hands in MLB? |
| 12:52 |
: So well groomed
|
| 12:52 |
Hey Eno, huge fan of your work, especially your pitching analysis. Raisel Iglesias has been looking great lately, what do you think of him? Any chance he’s taken his pitching to the next level? His peripherals look pretty solid. |
| 12:53 |
: Yes I like him. Has strong peripherals. He still loses like a tick-plus on the gun over the course of a game, but even at 91.5 in the fifth, he’s average in velocity. Still has strong slider/change combo.
|
| 12:54 |
real life baseball: it looks like we’re hurtling towards Arrieta vs Cole at PNC for the NL wild card. who do you like in that game/matchup? |
| 12:54 |
: Us for a great game.
|
| 12:54 |
Secret favorite Steely Dan song – Only a Fool Would Say That |
| 12:55 |
OZUNA WORTH HAVE REST SEASON. OZUNA thank. OZUNA eat |
| 12:55 |
: Still beating the ball into the ground.
|
| 12:55 |
Marley&Me was a terrible film. |
| 12:56 |
: Never saw it. “Marley” the documentary was awesome. Treated him like a man not a myth.
|
| 12:56 |
Are we seeing peak Rizzo or is there a little more room to grow as the team matures around him and offers better protection and more run opportunities? |
| 12:56 |
: Still technically pre peak, I do think there’s a little more room. Maybe most of it is from teammates.
|
| 12:56 |
Sorry for harassing your twitter instead of utilizing the chat. In a bind, I can keep 4 in a 5×5 + TB/OBP: Dee, Mookie, Marte, JD Mart, Puig, Belt, Dickerson, Odor. Ideally I keep the top 3, and I deal the rest for a stud because I wont make playoffs. |
| 12:58 |
: Damn that’s tough. Nice to get steals with high TB in Betts and Marte. I think I’d actually use Dee to get the stud. Dee plus JDM could get you a top-shelfer, and then you could plug in Puig at the back end. I’d try to trade into the infield though.
|
| 12:58 |
j’accuse! you of reverting to the old queue processing technique. au revoir. (I actually have an inconvenient schedule for consistent chat participation the next few months) |
| 12:58 |
: Well then I jumped ahead to see if i needed to react to reactions but I didn’t see anything..
|
| 12:58 |
Over/under: my jelly or my smelly? |
| 12:59 |
: Normally I’d say jelly but in this context that’s grosser than smelling.
|
| 12:59 |
Hey lookit’ that, Eno! A nice steamin’ quality start all up in your FACE. |
| 12:59 |
: I still don’t believe! But it’s cool that you’re mad, I get it.
|
| 12:59 |
have you ever though about bat grips |
| 12:59 |
| 1:00 |
:
|
| 1:00 |
: 400 years!
|
| 1:00 |
: (sneaky Tosh led track)
|
| 1:00 |
JBJ to CF, Mookie Betts to…..? |
| 1:01 |
: JBJ to a different team for something so he can play CF for them.
|
| 1:01 |
What’s your take on the Hard Root Beer? Haven’t tried one yet |
| 1:01 |
: Fine if you want to drink soda and get drunk.
|
| 1:01 |
god I love the smell of jockstraps after baseball games |
| 1:01 |
have you ever though about bat wings |
| 1:01 |
Dave Dombrowski put the Rob in “Robbie Ray to the Tigers for Doug Fister” |
| 1:02 |
|
| 1:02 |
What is Dave Dombrowski’s first order of business, roster-wise? |
| 1:02 |
: See what contract(s) he can move?
|
| 1:02 |
Eno! Making me nervous with tht Felix article. Where do you stand on steamer/Zips ROS projection of a 3.00 ERA? |
| 1:02 |
: Over on that and under on IP
|
| 1:02 |
is puig pronounced pwig or poo-ig, and is the i an ee or an ih sound |
| 1:02 |
: You know who you asking right
|

Ima let you finish but Babylon Sisters is the best Steely Dan song OF ALL TIME |
| 1:03 |
Is JV a decent pitcher again? Sitting 93-94 is still pretty solid for a righty |
| 1:04 |
: Weird, his K-BB has gotten better recently, and all of his pitches have gotten sharper in movement. look http://www.brooksbaseball.n…
|
| 1:04 |
what do you make of the dodgers letting go of a big chunk of their scouting department? do you think it has anything to do with guerrero and arry not living up to expectations or as simple as they weren’t needed because they cant sign anyone for the next two years? |
| 1:05 |
: I doubt they react to one signing like that. But maybe a few ones. I mean I hated the Olivera signing and they jettisoned him quickly too. Maybe a couple misses in a row are meaningful here? Could also just be Friedman slowly running the place like he wants to.
|
| 1:05 |
winking at people at weird times is gold, jerry, gold! |
| 1:05 |
The mermaid doesn’t seem to have a place to hide a thing anyway… |
| 1:05 |
this is why we don’t have toilet seats |
| 1:06 |
: This might be one of my favorite interludes of all time, guys.
|
| 1:06 |
Do you expect Corey Dickerson to return to normal next season? Or is now “injury prone”? |
| 1:06 |
: One bad year lost to a thing that once felled Albert Pujols isn’t enough for me to put that label on him.
|
| 1:07 |
: Now we’re getting into the real meat of Marley, and NO there will be no sherriffs or crying women.
|
| 1:08 |
:
|
| 1:09 |
: Went with Natty Dread over Ride Natty Ride.

How do I convince my half-assed vegetarian GF to come back to meat? |
| 1:10 |
: Bacon
|

RE: Winking at people of the same sex. Fun fact: it’s only sexual harassment if you are treating one sex differently than the other. So winking at members of the same sex *would* be harassment, but as long as I did it to a woman on occasion, I would be in the clear. |
| 1:11 |
: oh but that last one might get you in trouble unless you were playing a joke on someone else in the room
|
| 1:11 |
consecutive bad outings by hammel and lester. this CHN team relies on its SPs, who’ve gone largely without injury and beat their projections all year. was procuring only dan haren at the trade deadline a poor choice? |
| 1:11 |
: I’m sure they inquired on Hamels and Cueto…
|
| 1:11 |
Pshaw, just cater to your veggie girlfriend. She’ll think you’re awesome for seeking out veggie stuff for her. I’m an expert at this. |
| 1:11 |
I am an equal opportunity winker. |

Marinate all of her veggies in meat juices! |

Is Heady Topper worth taking a day off and driving 3 hrs up to VT for? We get Sip of Sunshine here in CT and I can’t imagine it gets better than that |
| 1:12 |
: No but Hill Farmstead, Fiddlehead are…
|
| 1:12 |
What do you make of Chris Bassit? Is he a future #2 starter? |
| 1:12 |
: No. But with the velocity increase and the improving curveball, I think he could be a 3/4.
|
| 1:13 |
Would Jose Quintana be enough to get Puig? |
| 1:13 |
: No but if it was do it.
|
| 1:13 |
If above average closers are 3, average closers 2, and guys getting saves 1, what’s my score with Allen, Ziegler, Tazawa, and Jepsen ROS? |

Has Rendon lost his shine? Been sitting for days. |
| 1:15 |
: Hello. I missed that somehow. Is he hurt again? Three days in a row???
|
| 1:15 |
Is there Waiting around, perhaps in vain? |
| 1:15 |
: NO!
|
| 1:15 |
If great songs are “overplayed”, does it truly hurt their level of greatness? i.e. Reelin’ in the Years, No Woman No Cry, Cotton Eyed Joe |
| 1:16 |
: hahah, let’s take the particular songs out and say maybe. It happens. But with NWNC, look at the lyrics sometime. Jesus. It’s one line over and over again.
|
| 1:17 |
: You want a sad song about a girl, try She’s gone, from number nine. This one is also mellow and beautiful. Misty Morning
|

Is Eno pronounced ee-no, ennui, or en-uig? |
| 1:17 |
: The first but wow if it was the second
|
| 1:17 |
Why is Eno’s chat inverted? |
| 1:18 |
: People told me they like new stuff at bottom, so that’s how I do it. I told others how to do it, so it’s not on me babe.
|
| 1:18 |
what about birds? |
| 1:18 |
: Nope. Back to what the guy said above, maybe I’ve been spoiled. I’ve heard all this stuff my whole life and maybe the big ones are spoiled. But also: I’ve heard all of them forever over and over again, so I really think these are the best.
|
| 1:19 |
Very cool stuff on Bauer. I’m more confused on him than ever now. What is something small and simple for him that should be step one going forward? |
| 1:19 |
: The stuff isn’t elite but the effort and science is. I think he’ll have a good year or two, but end up around average for the career.
|
| 1:19 |
Giants say that Pence will be back in 2 weeks, yet the diagonosis was moderate NOT mild. I’m thinking closer to the 29 day average from Zimm’s table. Let’s say it’s mid September, who do you like more in OBP league Pence, Gichuk or Springer? |
| 1:19 |
: Yeah obliques are terrible. Springer.
|
| 1:20 |
People like nitro beer in cans. People like cold brew coffee in bottles. People like nitro cold brew. Transitive theory: sell nitro coffee in cans. |
| 1:20 |
: I don’t know if you’re being silly but this would sell like fire in Antartica.
|
| 1:20 |
If we slam enough clams together, we’ll have clam slam jam! |
| 1:20 |
Correa. Never / has one man been so loved / in such a short time. |
| 1:20 |
Bully! (the exclamation, not the adjective) |
| 1:21 |
Did you get into “Effective Velocity” at all with Bauer? Eno and Bauer should be a multi-part series |
| 1:21 |
: We only touched on it, but I think Fagerstrom had a piece on that, so I wanted to try and get into new ground. The pronated curveball was mind-blowing.
|
| 1:21 |
Natty Dread again? |
| 1:22 |
: Yeah should just do that. Maybe I shortchanged that one and it should be higher. My B. They all so good. I feel good about number one though.
|
| 1:22 |
|
| 1:22 |
What type of drunk are you when you’ve had 1 too many? |
| 1:22 |
: I talk too much and Dan Hayes calls me Inside Voice.
|
| 1:23 |
Do you agree with Dave Wiers in keeping grichuk next year in the 12th over grandy-man in the 15th? 15 tm roto |
| 1:23 |
: batting average league? maybe. Not in OBP of course.
|
| 1:23 |
I was hoping you got all Eno-tional |
| 1:24 |
: No, not really. But I bet ‘talk too much’ was really, really, really predictable.
|
| 1:24 |
Has anyone ever looked at the ability of teams to beat standard (maybe BA) draft rankings? I remember a FG article a few months about about the failure of pretty much every Phillies draft over the last 6 or 8 years, but I’m curious if this is likely just random. |
| 1:24 |
: Yeah how many years would make a good sample? And then you have different GMs and regimes and all that…
|
| 1:25 |
Hopefully I’m not too late. With your piece on Felix, a scary thought came to mind. It’s no secret that Jack Z is on thin ice and a complete cratering that a Felix DL trip could cause may get him fired. Is it possible they’d minimize a nagging minor issue to save their jobs? |
| 1:25 |
: Nah I don’t think so. If that got out, it would be auto fire.
|
| 1:25 |
: Number two: good for summer. Sun is Shining.
|
| 1:26 |
:
|
| 1:26 |
: I also like the remix with Krush and Kondo.
|
| 1:27 |
Trea Turner – McDaniel sees him has a SS, and almost ready. Does he stick at SS? Overall are you a believer or a skeptic (re: Turner)? |
| 1:27 |
: I like Turner. He could be ready. They might try Danny first so that the pressure isn’t on Trea right away.
|
| 1:27 |
since beer advocate changed their rating system, that site is not useful to me. i don’t trust untappd because it’s not quite curated enough, and ratebeer is always giving beers a 99. help me mssr. sarris. |
| 1:27 |
| 1:28 |
: We’re going to have an ‘active beer filter’ soon because there are too many dead beers on there.
|
| 1:28 |
How do you get a new beer that has not been rated yet on to Beergraphs? |
| 1:28 |
: We just need 50 check-ins, so check in on untappd!
|
| 1:29 |
There should be a week-by-week series of all Marley’s sons – Damian next week, Stephen the next, then Ziggy, and so on. |
| 1:29 |
: Hah. You’ve seen some Damian and Ziggy on this chat before.
|
| 1:29 |
one good thing about music, it makes you feel alright |
| 1:30 |
: That was a really tough one to leave off. if you mean “One good thing about music,
when it hits you, you feel no pain.” |
| 1:30 |
With Pence out, does SF pick up another OF like Marlon Byrd? (He’s not their “type” of player, but still…) |
| 1:31 |
: Blanco was the veteran out there yesterday, which is super strange. I bet they calling, but what’s really out there? If Byrd is, sure.
|
| 1:31 |
Is there enought ime left in the season for an elite SP to make a difference in ratio categories? I think I can win now with some SP help, and was offered Kershaw and Robertson for my $17 Charlie Blackmon, who is keepable next year at that price. Kershaw and Robertson can’t be kept. Am I foolish to pull the trigger on that offer? |
| 1:31 |
: Do the math because Blackmon is great. Find out what you need to make any hay in the categories…
|
| 1:32 |
is your data all pulled from untappd? |
| 1:32 |
: Almost all. That’ll change a bit going forward.
|
| 1:32 |
20 years from now who had the better career, Nick or Dee Gordon. Note I will hold you your answer 20 years from now. |
| 1:32 |
: Dee.
|
| 1:32 |
One good thing about music, it’s easy to spell |
| 1:32 |
Someone please tell poor reddevil26 that his comment will go unanswered |
| 1:32 |
Mets shortstop 2016: Ruben Tejada –> Gavic Cecchini. |
| 1:33 |
HA! I’m 27 and have an 18 year old interested in me. The “talk to them” prescription will really solve the problem. She tried to talk to me about SnapChat and he high school friend’s drama… any semblance of me wahting to go for it IMMEDIATELY faded. |
| 1:33 |
cotton eyed joe…? greatness? |
| 1:33 |
: yeah I glossed over that part
|
| 1:33 |
I bought a crawford BP jersey before the 2012 season. I got heckled for it walking to Giants games a few times. My response was “well he does need batting practice…” I’m glad that worked out well. =D |
| 1:33 |
: he was always glovely
|
| 1:34 |
Any RPs out there who could get saves and won’t hurt my ratios? Sorry if this was asked earlier – I hate being late to the party! |
| 1:35 |
: Jepsen is okay. I actually really like Tazawa. Justin Miller. Bruce Rondon. Fernando Rodriguez.
|
| 1:35 |
Just broke the bank after spending $25 on a bottle of the immaculate Three-Eyed Raven by Ommegang. Should I set my sights on a more economical beer or higher paying job? |
| 1:35 |
: Just go for broke every once in a while.
|
| 1:35 |
cotton eyed joe was overplayed from the moment it was recorded |
| 1:35 |
: I was in Europe then and oh wow did I want to kill someone
|
| 1:36 |
I’m looking at a gift for my professor who pointed my towards my summer job. He’s an amazing instructor, and a big part of what I’ve been studying. Also a huge Twins fan. Should I get him a signed Miguel Sano baseball? |
| 1:36 |
: Yah that’s fine. He’ll like it, and it’s not too much. I mean you could go old school, too, like a Harmon Killebrew or something ridiculous.
|
| 1:37 |
Is Berrios really not any better than some of the other SPs the Twins have been schlepping out there? |
| 1:37 |
: we’ve been yelling about this for a while!
|
| 1:37 |
How much influence do “check-ins” have on the scores at BeerGraphs? Heady Topper is so popular and renown, that couldn’t it be artifically scoring high bc everyone knows about it and wants it, while it may not be “better” than other DIPAs? |
| 1:38 |
: We have to give checkin count some credit because the 50-check-in beer does not have the same weight as a 5000 check in beer. We use a log scale so that it doesn’t give the beer too much credit for just a few more checkins.
|
| 1:38 |
Greg Bird homered twice yesterday. All of the poorly done “bird” jokes played out. Do you think he will need to play a decade before people stop? |
| 1:38 |
: At least.
|
| 1:38 |
im 26 and use snapchat and not out of the norm on that one |
| 1:39 |
: That was just his example. And I’m not saying 18 year olds are stupid! I’m saying they just don’t generally like a lot of the same things. Of course it’s possible to leap the gap, but it will probably help someone who doesn’t want to make the gap not make the gap.
|
| 1:39 |
For the Twins fan professor: How about a homer hanky from the old Metrodome days? Or a piece of the Hefty bag right field wall? |
| 1:39 |
: “here’s some hefty bag from a wall”
|
| 1:40 |
: and number one for me
|
| 1:40 |
: Concrete Jungle
|
| 1:40 |
:
|
| 1:40 |
Everyone should know by now that any gifts you give an adult must be consumable–ie, don’t give them crap they have to hang on to for X number of years before they can chuck it. We all have enough crap in our houses as is. |
| 1:41 |
Nothing says how much you care like a trash bag that may or may not be part of a crappy stadium. |
| 1:41 |
And now his watch has ended. |
| 1:41 |
that’s where dreams are made |
| 1:41 |
Gart knows. |
| 1:41 |
hey internet wasnt a thing yet, ok? |
| 1:41 |
Next week I hope it’s Barry Manilow Top 10 |
| 1:42 |
Do most (or any) pitchers have a “win bonus” tied into their contracts? If so, Shelby Miller should be a case study as to why no pitcher should be subjected to that kind of tomfoolery. |
| 1:42 |
: I know that the rules changed recently. You can’t do performance bonuses based on some of those things, like you can’t do saves. You can do games finished, because that’s just like PA or IP, but I think you can’t do saves and wins any mores.
|
| 1:43 |
Are the Blue Jays being reckless by playing injured players? They’ve played Reyes with a broken rib, Travis with a bruised collarbone, Saunders with an unrepaired knee, Encarnacion with an inflamed shoulder, and now Martin with a strained hamstring. |
| 1:43 |
: Players always want to play. Perhaps they just don’t say no to their players enough, IF there is a thing.
|
| 1:43 |
also for the twins fan/professor. duluth pack makes a portfolio bag from the “dome” https://www.duluthpack.com/… |
| 1:43 |
I was really, really into Bob Marley for a long time until I learned he was a huge perpetrator of domestic violence. I have a hard time separating the artist from the art, which is my problem and admittedly leads me to not enjoy certain works of art that I would otherwise I love. I have a hard time hating Chinatown, though, even though Polanski is a horrible human being. |
| 1:45 |
: You should see Marley then. It’s great for seeing him as a total thing. I was listening to a song of his recently and read it totally differently after seeing that movie. Hold on
|
| 1:47 |
: Keep on Moving. Check out this crap. He says to his wife that the check should cash and why should she need another check and stop bugging him about money. He tells his children to raise themselves, and help each other out. He tells Ziggy to watch how his mother spends money. And all of this is because Marley has to keep on moving because he’s Part of the Struggle.
|
| 1:47 |
| 1:47 |
eno you need to get your hands on some Todd the Axe Man |
| 1:47 |
: It’s on it’s way to my house Right Now.
|
| 1:47 |
He’s a student, I don’t think a $385 bag is what he was thinking of. |
| 1:48 |
: haha, have to click the links in the future
|
| 1:48 |
Who could I expect to get in return for Felix right now? Trade deadline tomorrow. |
| 1:49 |
: If it’s not a FanGraphs reader, maybe do a sneaky two-for-one where you get a decent high floor pitcher back like a Lance Lynn, and then plug a hole elsewhere.
|
| 1:49 |
you need to get yer hands on some toad the wet sprocket |
| 1:50 |
@ Art Vandelay, if the kid is willing to spend on a Killebrew autograph, as Eno suggested, $385 is fair |
| 1:50 |
: Man I thought maybe Brew would be more affordable.
|
| 1:50 |
Also it’s cool that they made a bag out of the Metrodome!!! |
| 1:50 |
: And with that, we’re out! I gotta get to work. It’s been grand.
|
| 1:50 |
: Thanks people!
|
| 1:50 |
Killebrew sounds delicious. I need to get my hands on some. |
| 1:50 |
Killebrew autograph ball is $50 |
With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
I’m in a keep 6, H2H, 5×5 with obp replacing avg. We also have 5 prospects each. Players kept are moved up 4 rounds every year. I needed speed for a playoff run and traded Joc and Darvish (both in the last rd) for Billy Hamilton (last rd) and Thor (still prospect eligible. Now Billy is hurt and I’m regretting losing Joc. I wouldn’t have been able to keep Yu anyway and Thor as a prospect basically gives me an extra keeper next year. What do you think? Being to hard on myself?
