Eno Sarris: The ground-ball rate is a little worrisome, but I think he’s shown enough that I’d pencil him in for .290/20-25/10+ next year. Still a top talent.

Eno Sarris: I agree! I think it was the opportunity to spend cash to acquire high-end talent under market price, as they saw it. They can always trade Cespedes or Betts, people would line up for that.

I had some hope for him in fantasy because he has three secondary pitches that are above average by whiff rates, but now he’s back in Colorado, which makes his curve riskier and his bad fastball worse. In real life, he’s fine, he’s made it work in Colorado and he’s not breaking the bank. But eh.

Want to be excited about the Mets. Nice young talent. Good farm system. But Sandy has proven to be (unfortunately) remarkably inept at evaluating Major League talent. His trades for major leaguers have been awful, his free agent signings have been horrific or worse, and hes only gotten lucky on Marlon Byrd. So I have no faith that even if they do open their wallets that he will actually select the right players. Nobody thought Marcum, Francisco, Young, Granderson, Colon, Rauch, and so on and so on were good deals. And I didnt think then that keeping Wright was a sound decision and unfortunately its proving to be true sooner than expected. You like the Mets. Tell me something different. My football team sucks, so I am going to need good news this winter.

Eno Sarris: I thought Colon was fine, and he’ll be worth his contract this year. Granderson looks bad now. The rest cost about a buck. The young pitching is amazing, and they need a bat or two. I don’t think David Wright is done yet. And some of the worst deals have a whiff of ownership about them. I learned that most in the FO wanted to deal Reyes, for example. So, to some extent, the Wilpons will always be a problem. And to another, there’s plenty of reason to be excited. DeGrom! Harvey! Wheeler!

Eno Sarris: I like this questions. I think Yelich might be more valuable because I think he’ll hit for more power soon. Once he does, then you have three really good outfielders, all with defense and power and speed. But the same could be said for the Pirates! Because all three Pirates can play center, I’ll take them by a whisker.

Eno Sarris: Look for bullpen bargains to shore that thing up, bring all the young arms into spring and hope one turns into an ace. You already have the 3/4/5 of the rotation locked down. You just need a 1/2. Don’t have the money to buy that, I doubt. So you hope a youngster does it. Pompey/Gose in CF, try to re-sign Melky because his contact sets table for sluggers. Maybe buy a third baseman with a little pop as Lawrie insurance.

Eno Sarris: I talked to him about it a little, he’s not too worried. Velo still fine, and he’s now found something with his curve and is using it more. Only worrisome thing is a five-year IP high. (which would worry me more if it came with velocity loss)

Eno Sarris: Needs to improve his strikeout rate, like every other young Cub. I think he can still be an infielder, and think he might stick around and be there after one of the other guys busts or moves to the OF.

What the heck happened to the Brewers? This collapse is beyond regression at this point. I’m trying to believe they can turn it around soon, but they aren’t giving me much to work with.

Eno Sarris: I think they didn’t quite have enough pitching. If you go by team FIP, they’re second-to-last in the NL. I know their home park makes it worse. But even by xFIP they’re no better than middle of the pack.

Eno Sarris: I believe I’ve seen research that shows that a diverse lineup (contact and power) outdoes a one-note lineup. You can even take guys with the same wOBA and simulate them and the diverse lineup wins.

Eno Sarris: When so much of your value is tied up in defense, you need to wait a little bit longer to make prognostications like that. Defense peaks early, and the stats need larger samples. I think Juan is more 2-4 wins a year, which is great while he’s under team control. Particularly because arbitration probably won’t reward the things he does best.

Eno Sarris: Doolittle was a hitter in this league, and is now a pitcher. So he told me once that he throws the ball high in the zone because as a hitter all he was taught was to drop the bat head on the ball.

Guys like Teheran and Gray have been a bit on the crappy side recently. Is this mostly a function of a lot of innings on young guys or are they not as good as they seemed in the first half?

Eno Sarris: They probably weren’t 2.5 ERA guys, true talent. Gray’s change isn’t great and Teheran doesn’t throw his a ton. There are flaws. They’re really good, but there are flaws.

Eno Sarris: Right-hander’s first good year against right-handed pitching. it comes with a .343 BABIP vs RHP. He’s done enough to be the starting 3B next year, though. I’d hang on to him.

Eno Sarris: Dunno actually. There was a health problem for him as a hitter, just kept getting hurt. A’s made the suggestion. He was an okay first baseman but might have been a platoon Freiman type if he’d kept at it.
