Mike: Anything you’d change in the top 10 of the mock based on new info?

Eric A Longenhagen: Swaggerty to 9, McClanahan out of the top 10, Grayson Rodriguez anywhere from 10-TEX

Tommy N.: Chris Paddack has looked amazing to start the year how high is he rising on your top 100?

Eric A Longenhagen: In the 50 FV tier, probably in the 60-80 range

Greg: Can you expand on the Gorman to Atlanta connection? The mock didn’t really talk about it. How strong is the connection between the two sides?

Eric A Longenhagen: Have had national guys there multiple times the last few weeks, including Bridges.

Dan: Do you see a change in Dylan Cozens this season? His overall line is looking more like the ’16 version than the ’17 version, although the strikeouts are still there in bunches.  Is this just a hot start, or is he progressing meaningfully?

Eric A Longenhagen: No movement as far as I’ve heard

Dub: How confident are you in Urias’s ability to eventually hit for power? Obv major league ball will help

Eric A Longenhagen: Quite. If you square up the big league ball right now it’s gonna go.

Nick: Do padres prospects Franmil Reyes and Jeisson Rosario have chances to be full-time starters for the padres within the next 2-3 years, and if so, what is their upside?

Eric A Longenhagen: Might be aggressive with Rosario’s timeline but otherwise, sure. Franmil maybe a 2 WAR guy. Rosario maybe a little better than than if the plate discipline is elite as it appears to be so far.

Mark : Yesterday Kiley said the top 3 picks in the draft might get blown up. Can you provide any more details?

Eric A Longenhagen: Meh. We just think the pack up top is close enough that you can talk yourself out of Mize between his injury history, atypical pitch usage, etc. We’ve been operating under the assumption that he’d go 1 for a while now but all that stuff I just mentioned plus what we know about where Detroit decision makers have been lately indicate that other scenarios are more possible than we’ve discussed up to this point.

TC Bear: Can Bellinger really play center field like some say? I thought his reads looked poor last night, but obviously hasn’t played out there much.

Eric A Longenhagen: Yeah, he’d be a 45 or 50 there, not Andruw Jones or anything. He’s so good at 1B that I wouldn’t move him.

A big dumb idiot: What are your thoughts on Lansing shortstop Kevin Smith aside from those that are aroused due to his name being shared with Silent Bob

KB: Do you have any intel on Luigi Rodriguez? 25 year old, signed with the Giants as a minor league FA in the offseason, has a 1.107 OPS, career low K%, near career high BB%. Probably a flash in the pan, or is there something there he changed?

Eric A Longenhagen: I love Anthony Seigler. Fastest riser? Probably one of the college arms, like Kowar.

Desperate, Confused Marlins Fan: I dont remember who said it in one of these chats, but “Peter Alonso could be the Rhys Hoskins of this year” was uttered. Is that a reach?

Eric A Longenhagen: Depends what you mean by that. Do you mean ‘R/R college 1B who bucks trends and makes it as an everyday player.’ then sure. If you mean he’s Hoskins’ statistical clone, that’s rich for me.

James: Does Dennis Santana debut for the Dodgers this season?

Eric A Longenhagen: Yes

Eric A Longenhagen: He’ll be bounced from the 100 on the update

Sarah: Has Peter Alonso’s leapfrogged Dominic Smith in your opinion?

Eric A Longenhagen: No

Eric A Longenhagen: Smith’s body looks great, btw. Heard Francesa call him fat on the radio last week but he’s looking svelt.

Dieter Von Wolfhausen: Hi Eric, thanks for chatting today! Previously you mentioned that Bieber needs to show success at upper levels  to show he can make it as a big leaguer (or somehting like that)  Can you speak to his success so far at AAA? If you ranked him today, where would he be? around 50? lastly, what are your thoughts on his ceiling and upside?

Eric A Longenhagen: I have a rough sketch of the updated 100 and have him around 60. If he’s an 80 command guy then he should be higher. At this point I’d say he’s probably a 3/4 with a chance to be a 3

Eric A Longenhagen: Which is like, 3 WAR annually.

Coppy: If a player had the perfect ability to discern balls and strikes but only had a 20 Hit tool (slow bat speed, questionable ability to make contact), would he still have at the major leagues?
I guess what I’m asking is this. Will we ever see something like a .170 AVG and a 400 OBP?

Eric A Longenhagen: Nah, have to whack pitches in the zone. Hypothetical Guy would swing through three fastball down the middle every atbat

Dan: Who do you see as the Mets’ SS of the (distant) future: Gimenez or Mauricio? Is Vientos in the mix or is he 3b all the way? Thanks!

Eric A Longenhagen: Gimenez higher probability, Mauricio more upside.

John J: Can you tell us more about Trent Deveaux?  I’ve seen several mentions that he is a player to watch, but he has not played in games yet.

Eric A Longenhagen: He’s in Extended. Feel to hit has developed significantly over the last six months, has the frame to grow into more power, runs well enough to stay in center field. A very good, well-rounded prospect

Jack: Few weeks back you responded to a question about cubs prospects to watch and mentioned Benjamin Rodriguez if I recall correctly. You didn’t elaborate on him and I couldn’t find much info on him. Care to give a brief summary on him?

Eric A Longenhagen: Super lanky teenage pitching prospect with a clean delivery. Fastball 87-90 in my looks. Purely someone to follow because the body and delivery are good.

Rick Sanchez: Have you seen or heard reports on James Kaprelian’s stuff?

Eric A Longenhagen: Was just shut down again due to shoulder. 91-94 with 55 secondaries when I saw him two weeks ago.

Mountie Votto: Jose Siri has picked up where he left off in terms of hitting, but has struck out 9 times in 6 games with no walks. Everyone is so hyped on him, but I’m still so so worried his plate discipline issues will doom him. Are the tools really THAT loud that they could make up for his atrocious hacking?

Eric A Longenhagen: I think so, but the approach probably dilutes his value. I think he’s more talented than Nick Williams, who got there with similar issues and now can’t quite break through. I think Siri’s got more playable power than Williams and he’s a much better defender.

Ben: What has Paddack been doing differently?

Eric A Longenhagen: Been healthy

PM: How has Mondesi been looking so far and how long until we see him in KC again?

Eric A Longenhagen: About the same. Huge power on contact but the on base ability is a concern and he’s not a technically sound player. Nicky Lopez isn’t as toolsy but I think he’s a better prospect.

Justin Trudeau: Thoughts on Noah Naylor? Does he have any chance to move up into the first round? Do you think he will play as a catcher or 3B once drafted?

Eric A Longenhagen: Catcher unless he gets to a place where his bat is nearly ready and it’s clear his glove is not. I think he’d be fine at third. Could slip into back of rd 1, yes.

Gord: Long-term whic of Jeter Downs or Yasel Antuna has a better shot at sticking at short, and who has the better bat?

Eric A Longenhagen: Antuna, Downs

Gavin: Hey Eric! The more I read about/watch Bo Bichette–violent swing, incredible bat control, etc, the more he reminds me of Nomar Garciaparra. Thoughts on that comparison? Do you think either he or Brendan Rodgers make it to the Parent Clubs this year? Love those two guys at 2B for years to come.

Eric A Longenhagen: That’s actually a really cool comp that I’d never heard before. Rodgers I think sees the Majors, Bo I think does not.

Mountie Votto: How worried should we be about Senzel’s vertigo? Is there anyone that’s totally gotten over it or, on the other hand, flamed out because of it?

Eric A Longenhagen: My mom dealt with it for a while and then it went away. It might be a trial and error thing to get to the source of it? No idea. I think it’ll be remedied eventually.

ryan: does justin upton have a 50 hit tool?

Eric A Longenhagen: 40

Mountie Votto: If Shed Long keeps this up, where do the Reds play him (assuming Senzel gets over the vertigo and Suarez stays healthy/productive)?

Eric A Longenhagen: 2B

James: Thoughts on Griffin Canning? Better than you thought he would be? Does he make his MLB debut by the end of the year?

Eric A Longenhagen: Better than he was in college which is surprising because he fell last year due to medical concerns. Yeah, I think we see him at some point this year, even if it’s not for an extended period of time.

Slurp: Thoughts on telmito augustin? A believer in his hot start in AA?

Eric A Longenhagen: Saw him last week. Body has really filled out, definitely more there than there was before. Numbers are super crazy and wouldn’t bet on him slugging .600 forever but he’s better

James: Is Taylor Ward the 3B of the future for the Angels? Started raking when they moved him from behind the plate?

Eric A Longenhagen: Tough call. Those peripherals are really good but scouts just do not buy it.

Judge: What do you think about Loaisiga’s peformance?

Eric A Longenhagen: Probable reliever. Saw him last week, he was 94-97 with a plus slider and power sinking change but that delivery and his injury history are very relievery

Nick: You’re probably familiar with JJ Matijevic from his time at Arizona. I see he is now an outfielder. Is the bat good enough to play there?

Eric A Longenhagen: Power is but I’m skeptical about the rest

Frank: I don’t think I can recall ever seeing a prospect grade with more game power than raw power. If you were to grade Jose Ramirez, current superstar, as a prospect, would he be an example of someone with more game power than raw power? Ditto Ozzie Albies.

Eric A Longenhagen: Yeah this makes sense if you consider that raw power (how far/hard you hit the ball) and game power (what you SLG, ISO, HR, etc) are measuring two very different things that only overlap a little bit, you can see why this happens pretty often.

Russ: you guys were high on sean murphy. are you even higher now?

Eric A Longenhagen: He’s shaded up a few spots bit this is basically what we thought he was.

NYTT: Is this Sean Newcomb the version that most people thought would come to fruition out of the draft?

Eric A Longenhagen: Yes and it feels so amazing to finally see it happening. People were uttering ‘Roger Clemens’ under their breath when he was in college. Mostly they were talking about his lower half, but still.

NYTT: How different/similar are Liberatore and Allard as pre-draft prospects?

Eric A Longenhagen: Libby > size, velo, health

Jake: Any concern about Ryan Vilade struggle so far ?

Eric A Longenhagen: Yes, he looked physically weak/thin in the spring

Norman: What’s wrong with Rooker and Hays ?

Eric A Longenhagen: Rooker has poor breaking ball recog, Hays just has a bad approach and will always be streaky.

mike sixel: At this point, is it safe to assume the Twins and KC have no top prospects?

Eric A Longenhagen: Nick Gordon is hitting but probably 2B for him. Royce Lewis is great. KC has Seuly and Lee and I loved their draft class, plus they have like 4 more guys coming in a month. Think both orgs have some premium talent that just needs time.

WesleyC.: Any early reports on Julio Pablo Martinez?

Eric A Longenhagen: Nope, was told I probably won’t see him in the states this year until very late.

Parts + Gleyber: Former Fringe Fiver Guillermo Heredia might be in line for more PT. OBP’s been strong. Think he capitalizes?

Eric A Longenhagen: Yes, love Heredia as a platoon CF.

Jason: Do you or Kiley ever have people, like average fans, recognize you when you are out scouting? If yes, does it annoy you if they try to talk to you, even if it’s briefly?

Eric A Longenhagen: It’s rare but you’re welcome to say hi if you see me. Kiley, too, I guess but why would anyone wanna talk to him?

Anon: Which teams treat their players best in terms of pay/benefits?  Does it have a positive impact on development?

Eric A Longenhagen: They all do an insufficient job.

Eric A Longenhagen: Some put more into it than others (Toronto does okay, Cubs, Dbacks, Seattle is trying new things) but mostly all the kids are underpaid.

Columbus: If Logan Gilbert recovers his velocity, is he a legitimate top 10 pick?

Eric A Longenhagen: Yes

Osiris Johnson: Do you guys know about me?

Eric A Longenhagen: Super young and twitchy, out of control style of play, serious questions about if you’ll hit and your positions but teams who look at age/upside are probably on you.

Anthony: Do you ever get asked about or criticized for your reports from scouts for teams, or do they not pay much attention to public lists

Eric A Longenhagen: Every day

Jorge Mateo: Is he a legit .280/12/50 guy?

Eric A Longenhagen: I think so

Anthony: It seems that fans are more prospect-centric than they had been even a years ago. Would you agree with this, and does it affect at all how teams handle things like player promotions/ service time gimmicks?

Eric A Longenhagen: I agree and I don’t think it has yet but I think GMs having their feet held to the fire over service time manipulation is a sign that things might change. It’s fun watching some of them squirm when they’re asked. I don’t blame them for doing what’s best for their team, or what they think is best, but the rule is BS and we need to do better on the next CBA and better as a baseball culture, in general.

Vader: Best guess as to Vlad’s imminent call up?

Eric A Longenhagen: No idea but I’d take him instead of Donaldson right now

Anon: Any idea why baseball caught on in DR more than any other place?

Eric A Longenhagen: No, but that’s a great question.

Roger: How wide is the gap between Bohm and India in terms of offensive talent?

Eric A Longenhagen: Full grade of power, at least. India better contact skills.

Ryan: Can you tell me a little more on Enyel De Los Santos’ ceiling? He is thriving at AAA so far?

Eric A Longenhagen: Mid-90s, plays down a bit due to stride length, sounds like there are two breaking balls now and they play well off his fastball, changeup also solid. Just a good fourth starter for me.

Dood: I have this memory of someone asking you who would be a quick riser this year in the minors and you answering Brandon Marsh potentially, but I can’t find record on it.  Did you say that?

Eric A Longenhagen: Probably? Ranked him ahead of Thaiss immediately after the draft despite Marsh’s back issue. I’m a fan.

JKE: Which High School shortstops do you see being drafted in the first round including comp rounds and who are they?

Eric A Longenhagen: Turang, Edwards, end of list.

Mitch Haniger: As someone without expertise in scouting, I want to believe that if India dominates the SEC in all offensive facets, there’s no reason to believe his bat doesn’t carry over to pro ball. Why isn’t his stock higher/what are the things that could be exposed in pro ball?

Eric A Longenhagen: .411/.519/.809 as a junior at Georgia. I agree performance, especially in that kind of conference, is a positive. But it isn’t proof. His tools are just okay (India’s)

Bob: So is Cavan Biggio becoming a top 100 guy or at least top Jays prospect. Many can only scout the stat line, what does he look like in person?

Eric A Longenhagen: Playable power, probably not a 2B

Q-Ball: Are you buying stock in Dakota Mekkes?  Dominating again this year in AA, despite middling stuff.

Eric A Longenhagen: Yeah, he’s a deception relief prospect

AJ: How legit is Cavan Biggio? Hes not going to keep up the power pace, but has he went from being organizational depth to …?

Eric A Longenhagen: Throws really hard nothing else has progressed yet.

Dap Pad: Luis Urias up before or after the all star break?

Eric A Longenhagen: After

Mr. Met: Hey Eric, thanks for all of your work! Even though Peter Alonso is 23 and in Double-A, do you think his low swinging strike rates (8% this year, 9% last year) and strikeout rates (~18% this year and last year) suggest he’ll be an above-average or plus hitter in MLB? Or are you concerned that any of his bat speed, bat control, plate coverage, approach, etc. will keep him in the below-average to average range? I know he has a high bar to clear as a 1B-only prospect.

Eric A Longenhagen: So there are several references to Alonso’s swinging strike rate in chat questions today and I have to believe it’s because it was written somewhere else. The flow of information through these chats is so bizarre. Lots of questions phrased ‘I Heard xyz about this prospect’ and like, where did you hear it? Might make citations mandatory in chat from now on.

Slothrop: What’s the farthest away you can sit and still effectively scout?

Eric A Longenhagen: Vertical axis matter, too. I have good long-distance vision but suck at determining breaking ball depth from more than 10 feet above the playing surface

Anon: How many nights a year are you/an average scout in a hotel?

Eric A Longenhagen: Avg scout is 200 nights a year

Eric A Longenhagen: Living in AZ the number is significantly less

Eric A Longenhagen: Much closer to Defending Your Life

Max: How does mlb performance change scouting grades or FV of a prospect – particularly pitchers who teams havn’t seen before. I’m thinking specifically of Jaime Barria who has pitched really well in the majors, but you have a 45 on. Thanks

Eric A Longenhagen: It’s more about what we learn about his stuff than the results. Like we have Trackman data on Barria now that we didn’t when we wrote him up.

Gilbert: Would you rather have Travis Swaggerty or Jared Kelenic? Classic example of top college OF vs top prep bat. What is the deciding factors?

Eric A Longenhagen: Kelenic. I’m not confident Swaggerty hits.

nb: For those of us who aren’t as smart as you and have stayed in the northeast, can you make it stop raining here?  But seriously, I’m curious about if you have any updates on recent Phillies top picks Moniak and Haisley?  Any progress?  Thanks!

Eric A Longenhagen: I had three games banged last week so I feel ya. Those two have been no bueno, sadly. No movement.

Vince: So last year, the industry were complete non- believers in scott kingery. Then at preseason, he was ranked mad high. I feel that the same thing is happening with Cavan Biggio. I am buying into him being legit. What are your “objective” thoughts?

Eric A Longenhagen: I disagree with your assertion that Kingery wasn’t highly thought of. Biggio made a swing change that has him getting to more power. He’s 23. Can we all calm down?

Rick C: What do you make of Albies so far this year?  He’s exploded power-wise, but not showing the same plate discipline he’s had in the past.

Eric A Longenhagen: That’s a subtle trend throughout baseball. More aggressive approaches becoming common.

Babe Lincoln: Outlook on Justin Dunn change much?

Eric A Longenhagen: Kiley saw him this week and thought he looked okay, somewhat relieverish.

SM: Franchy’s plate discipline appears to be steadily improving as he gets more exposure. Are you any more confident in his ability to reach the higher end of potential outcomes?

Eric A Longenhagen: Certainly moving in the right direction.

extended: when you talk about a player being in extended what does that look like? back fields in arizona working with development staff or is he scrimmaging against other team development players

JaKob: What is keeping Trevor Larnach out of the first round? Seems like a big time bat that could replicate what Austin Hays did.

Eric A Longenhagen: (shrug) we mocked him rd 1 and he’s been in our first round mix since the start of the season

Brian Anderson: do you think anderson has any power that he hasnt tapped thus far? discipline has been good (362 obp so far)

Eric A Longenhagen: Yeah, plus raw but hasn’t been pulling the ball this year

The Ghost of Wade Boggs: What Major League hitter had (or has) the worst hit tool you’ve ever seen? Would you say it was a 20, or is it virtually impossible to make it to the bigs with that?

Eric A Longenhagen: Florimon?

Justin: Is it more common for a can’t-miss prospect to miss or for a mid-top-100 guy like Judge to… become Judge?

Eric A Longenhagen: The latter. Variance isn’t accounted for well on the public side of things. We know, intuitively, that guys ilke Judge, Joey Gallo, Chris Davis all have seasons like Judge’s rookie year in them if things click and they’re frustrating and concerning at other times.

kderg: Do you have any thoughts on Jalen Beeks long term? Carson’s write-up in the fringe five had me pumping my brakes, but he has put up some great numbers in triple a so far this year.

Eric A Longenhagen: We think he’s a #4/5 starter

Cy Acosta 41: Love what all of you at F’graphs do, Eric. So, you’re the White Sox at 4 (with today’s farm system). If the following are your options, what would you do and why: (1) Madrigal; (2) Singer (or Mize, if he somehow falls to #4); (3) Convince India or Kelenic to sign underslot and use the $ for a high school stud in Round 2)? Luke: A follow-up to Anon’s question: Outside obviously doing the right thing, to you feel there is a competitive advantage to be gained by paying Milbers more/taking better care of them and if so why isn’t a team leading the charge to get that advantage?

Eric A Longenhagen: Yes there is but your owner has to be motivated to do that and most of them are trying to make money first, win second.

Babe Lincoln: Do you know if any teams consult your scouting reports and/or rankings when making FO decisions?

Eric A Longenhagen: I know our rankings are used in some teams models for ranking prospects and that our stuff gets read by execs, same as Keith, BA, MLB, etc.

Anon: Do you know of any post hoc farm system analysis? I would love to know who actually had the best prospects in 2003 vs the rankings at the time.

Eric A Longenhagen: We hope the board enables you to figure some of that stuff out eventually

Eric A Longenhagen: Was 92-95 t 97 this spring and last summer for me. Really athletic, feel for breaking ball. Size is prohibitive but he’s a good prospect.

Eric A Longenhagen: I think they’re on Kelenic, too.

kderg: What if the cast of Seinfeld were MLB prospects? Jerry hit double?

Eric A Longenhagen: JLD is the best prospect of that group. She’s the MIF who can hit and plays forever. Alexander is the catcher that comes up, has a couple good years, goes away. Jerry is Deion Sanders where standup is football and the show is baseball. Michael Richards is Curt Schilling, I guess.
