FanGraphs 2023 Day One Draft Chat

6:40
Eric A Longenhagen: Howdy howdy howdy

6:41
Eric A Longenhagen: Howdy from the fourth platform of Lumen Field’s Media Row.

6:41
Eric A Longenhagen: The power went out on the media platform so we’ll see how this goes. Luckily the wifi is working (sorta)

6:42
Eric A Longenhagen: Some links for you: final mock 2023 Mock Draft 2.0: The Day Of (Just Names) | FanGraphs Baseball

6:42
Eric A Longenhagen: Pushed slightly updated rankings, as well. The Board | FanGraphs Baseball

6:43
Ryan: Hi Eric! How are you today?

6:43
Eric A Longenhagen: I am well. Meg and I are stoked to have completed all 30 lists again. She edited the equivalent of three books worth of words just from me over the span of eight months.

6:44
5 Run Homer: Wild to see Kiley McDaniel in a suit on tv

6:44
Eric A Longenhagen: Are the lights reflecting off his fair irish skin? Does he look like the poster for The Thing on camera?

6:44
Farhandrew Zaidman: Happy draft day! Per Lance Brozdowski’s analysis, the best comps for Skenes’ fastball are Sandy Alcantara and Brudsar Graterol. That’s uhh….not great?

6:45
Eric A Longenhagen: Agreed. It’s hard enough that it’s still good, but definitely has suboptimal shape. Lance is a great educator, btw.

6:46
Guest: Hearing Walker Martin has overslot deal in place with Giants after rd 1. You hear this? Would they even need to manipulate slot $ at 16?

6:46
Eric A Longenhagen: The area guys have put him with SF for a while now, yes. I think they could do slot at 16 and still get him, I also think their pocket might get picked if they wait until the second, though.

6:47
hbharman: Any word on who the Pirates are taking at 1?

6:47
Eric A Longenhagen: No, my channels went dark about 15 min ago

6:49
Eric A Longenhagen: Latest buzz is that Tommy Troy could go inside 10, Lowder might fall because of his medical

6:51
Guest: Give us Cubs fans any names you’ve heard them on for later rounds?

6:51
Eric A Longenhagen: Duce Robinson if they have enough $ to keep him from playing TE at USC

6:51
Gronch: whos the most opportunistic draft room? Aka will take value/scoop up whomever the top guy is even if it doesn’t fit a model or preferred demo

6:51
Eric A Longenhagen: Cleveland

6:53
Lucas: There’s a lot of buzz about the Twins taking Jacob Gonzalez at 5, but you have them taking Jenkins, which seems to make more sense. Give me a reason why taking Gonzalez would be a prudent decision (other than the obvious money reasons).

6:54
Eric A Longenhagen: I am very scared that he won’t hit in pro ball, he’ll swing inside so many fastballs. He did perform against the SEC for three years but so did JJ Bleday, in my mind he has the same issues

6:54
Mango: Which player has the widest range today?

6:56
Eric A Longenhagen: Blake Mitchell could go 8 (on a deal) or fall into the back third. I feel like a college bat will fall and be good value for a team that is currently slated to take a high schooler, and then that high schooler will fall. Could be Colin Houck.

6:56
Craig: Any idea about which high school talents may fall due to signability concerns or could slide and sign for a significant overslot bonus?

6:56
Eric A Longenhagen: Roch Cholowsky and Grant Gray. Cholowsky’s number supposedly starts with a 4, that aint happening. Gray, Bitonti both 2.5.

6:56
Tiger Fan: Hey! How much stock do you put in late-hour rumors like Gonzalez to Detroit (Taylor Blake Ward) as anything beyond bonus pool bluffs?

6:57
Eric A Longenhagen: We’re definitely at a point where you have to wonder if anything you hear is a lie, that’s basically the last three days.

6:57
david: very surprised nazzan zanatello is in attendance, feels like theres a chance he doesnt get taken till end of the 2nd

6:57
Eric A Longenhagen: Agreed but it’s freaking cool to be here

6:58
Jordan: Any idea on where chase Davis lands tonight? Possible he could fall to 26?

6:58
Eric A Longenhagen: Possible but rumors are high as 10 on a deal with Miami (though there are a ton of names attached there, a bunch of them have to be bunk)

6:58
Jay: Arjun Nimmala. Is his “non-traditional” background a big factor in where he gets drafted?

6:59
Eric A Longenhagen: Kinda, if you think he’s just scratching the surface of his baseball ability then it’s a round-up situation. But it’s more important that he K’d 27% of the time this spring.

6:59
Joseph: Do you think the Rangers play it the same way last year? A underslot guy and hope for a pickup in the 4th? Who would be some options for that play?

6:59
Eric A Longenhagen: Proabbly not

6:59
Eric A Longenhagen: But it isn’t like we knew Rocker was the pick last year.

6:59
Gregory: So much Gerrit Cole/Jacob deGrom in Charlee Soto…

6:59
Eric A Longenhagen: Absolutely not

7:00
JC: Why did you guys slip in a little political jab on Twitter? What’s the point of that? A year or two ago FG went uber political and isolated half of their audience, but they seem to have moved away from that recently. I think many of us would just love a place to go for baseball only and stay away from the culture wars.

7:01
Eric A Longenhagen: Do you think we all collaborate to come up with the tweets? I haven’t been on twitter for 18 months dude, not everything is a conspiracy.

7:01
Tyler: How likely are Farmelo and Noble Meyer to be mariners tonight?

7:01
Eric A Longenhagen: Honestly the odds are probably like 5-10%

7:02
Reginald: Hearing Max Clark is a Pirate if he meets their number

7:03
Takao: Reds are very confident one of Jenkins and Clark falls to them at 7, per the same dood that said that they were confident Collier would fall to them last year. Heard that the Twins have a deal with Gonzalez done.

7:03
A’s Fan: I’ve heard that the A’s are looking to go under-slot at #6. Would Taylor fit that description?

7:03
Eric A Longenhagen: You guys are so plugged in!

7:03
hbharman: Any specific issue re: Lowder, like Jenkins’s hip?

7:04
Eric A Longenhagen: Allegedly elbow, people here are watching the end of his last Omaha start and wondering why he came out after 87 pitches

7:04
Craig: How are you able to hear so much buzz about players teams might select with their pick? Don’t teams want to keep that under wraps?

7:04
Eric A Longenhagen: Because the slot system means they have to engage with agents

7:04
Eric A Longenhagen: commish is talking now

7:06
Guest: Which Twitter account will you be Woj’ing on ?

7:06
Eric A Longenhagen: none, doing it right here

7:06
Mike: The Red Sox seem extremely hard to pin down on what they are thinking at #14 and even #50. What are you hearing in terms of targets at 14 or later tonight.

7:06
Eric A Longenhagen: There is buzz about them cutting a deal there

7:07
Byron Denniston: What’s the data on this underslotting Strategy? Other than everyone’s cheaper than they could be

7:07
Eric A Longenhagen: Best example is Cubs doing Schwarber and then Cease/Steele/Sands, with two huge hits in that group

7:07
Mango: I don’t follow college baseball as much as football and basketball. Those sports have seen fringy players stay in school for NIL money. Will baseball be affected in the same way? I know the money isn’t the same on the national stage but seems like SEC schools could match some low-six-figure deals if they really wanted to

7:07
Eric A Longenhagen: I thikn that’s right. Gavin Casas a good example of it happening this year, though he’s not a great pro prospect

7:08
DBRuns: About to turn on coverage. Should I be watching ESPN or MLB Network?

7:08
Eric A Longenhagen: you should sample both

7:09
Eric A Longenhagen: Sounds like it will be Skenes 1

7:13
Eric A Longenhagen: Now i have one source saying Crews 2

7:14
Eric A Longenhagen: Weird rumor that now three sources have told me says there’s buzz Kyle Teel goes 4

7:15
Jack: Eric, are you a fan of the lottery>

7:15
Eric A Longenhagen: Eh, kinda

7:16
Fenster: Who is the Evan Carter of this year’s draft?

7:16
Eric A Longenhagen: lol, whoever it is we don’t know yet, which is what makes him the Carter

7:17
Eric A Longenhagen: yes confirmed Crews 2

7:19
Steve: Prediction for fastest player to make the big leagues?

7:19
Eric A Longenhagen: Weirdly Waldrep, just think he ends up somewhere where they need him asap

7:19
Eric A Longenhagen: Same as Crochet

7:19
hbharman: Where will Skenes slot in on the Top 100?

7:19
Eric A Longenhagen: It’s on the board

7:21
Eric A Longenhagen: conflicting info at 3, two players I think are clark and langford, they have same advisor

7:22
Eric A Longenhagen: mostly getting Clark now

7:22
Eric A Longenhagen: but I’m not sure, wouldn’t Tweet it or anything like that 😉

7:22
Guest: If you care to share, what % of your sources are FO vs the agent side?

7:22
Eric A Longenhagen: overwhelmingly scouts and FO

7:24
Eric A Longenhagen: TEX was seen as Langford’s floor, guessing he goes next

7:24
Eric A Longenhagen: one source says so

7:24
Eric A Longenhagen: then Jenkins

7:24
Al Avila: Not sure if they meant to but ESPN listed Skenes as the pick a couple mins early

7:24
Eric A Longenhagen: lol, that’s funny

7:25
Ken: Please, please, please say Callis is wrong and the A’s are going to select someone other than Jacob Wilson?

7:25
Eric A Longenhagen: IDK, did he say that on air or something?

7:27
Ted Yost: Seems kinda wild A’s wouldn’t jump on one of Clark or Jenkins

7:27
Eric A Longenhagen: Neither of them is going to be there, I don’t think

7:27
DBRuns: Just curious, how do you get these confirmations? Do teams essentially scoop you as a favor given how much you put out in the public realm?

7:28
Eric A Longenhagen: No, we’re rolling dope all the way down the board together. i get them stuff early and they confirm when they can. I’m usually texting before I put it in here

7:28
DudeLove: Long time reader, first. time question asker….. im an avid blue jays fan since 92.. Who should they take?

7:29
Eric A Longenhagen: I think they’re in a spot where they can take the Kawhi Leonard of this draft, someone of great value will fall there as teams with comp picks in front of them get cute

7:29
Jon: How bad is the Royals’ farm system? Does whoever get taken tonight slot immediately to number one?

7:31
Eric A Longenhagen: It’s the worst one, maybe the pick is no. 1

7:31
Eric A Longenhagen: here are the current farm rankings btw

7:32
Eric A Longenhagen: Confirmed Jenkins 5

7:32
Zombocom: you think crews is not a 70 hitter?

7:32
Eric A Longenhagen: Nah, he’s good but tail in on his hands is a problem for him

7:32
Jeet: Awesome work Eric positive vibes!

7:32
Eric A Longenhagen: my adrenaline hasn’t kicked in yet, still coasting

7:33
Eric A Longenhagen: wait until we get a weird pick, i’ll fel high for like an hour

7:34
Eric A Longenhagen: We night get our first weird one here with Oakland…

7:34
Eric A Longenhagen: working to confirm who the haircut guy is

7:34
A’s Fan: Callis tweeted J. Wilson this morning

7:34
Eric A Longenhagen: ^ that sounds right

7:35
Eric A Longenhagen: good for Jim to have that during the day, freaking incredible

7:36
John Frieda: Your boy Kileys hair is looking top notch on the ESPN broadcast!

7:36
Eric A Longenhagen: He and I are both slowly losing it, but he coiffed the shit out of it today

7:36
Comp: Matt Shaw – Ian Kinsler?

7:36
Eric A Longenhagen: oooh, I kinda dig that

7:37
Drew: Who’s the Termarr Johnson Sixth Tool (i.e., make up) Award Winner in 2023?

7:38
Eric A Longenhagen: So Jacob Wilson 6 to Oakland and then I’m working to confirm Rhett Lowder at 7 to CIN

7:38
sadtrombone: can you explain what is not happening with Watts-Brown’s fastball shape? I don’t think I have ever seen you classify a fastball as having no shape.

7:39
Eric A Longenhagen: Have a second source saying Lowder 7

7:40
Jon: Are you surprised how the first five picks went down?

7:40
Eric A Longenhagen: Kinda sorta, those were the best five guys so that isn’t surprising but Skenes 1 I had no dope on that

7:42
Guest: When do you think Crews could be in the majors

7:42
Eric A Longenhagen: Next year

7:43
Billy G: Why are the A’s so…meh

7:43
Eric A Longenhagen: Their owner is worse than meh, i can’t imagine having to deal with that

7:44
Farhandrew Zaidman: Nightengale has Cherington stating that Skenes will pitch this year, but it’s “unknown” if that will be at the big league level.

7:44
Eric A Longenhagen: That would rule, if they’re in the thick of it at the end of the year…

7:44
Eric A Longenhagen: Can you imagine shoving in Omaha and then during a pennant race?

7:48
Eric A Longenhagen: I was getting Nimmala to KC rumors but now my sources are coalescing around Mitchell 8, then Dollander 9 to Rockies

7:49
Jimmy: Cubs gotta be thinking Waldrep or Dollander based on their recent draft history

7:49
Eric A Longenhagen: Sounds like Dollander won’t get there but Waldrep is just good value from here on out

7:49
Fan: Eric are you here at the draft? Where are you so I can meet you?

7:49
Eric A Longenhagen: Yes but I’m working right now

7:50
hbharman: JJ Piccollo’s first pick as Royals GM is Blake Mitchell. What does this say about an organizational blueprint for the future?

7:50
Eric A Longenhagen: The scouts have a say.

7:51
bernbp5: First big surprise?

7:51
Eric A Longenhagen: Wilson for me, I did not have that

7:52
Kurt: Hearing any chatter about an unexpected faller tonight?

7:52
Eric A Longenhagen: Nimmala, if that strikes you as shocking.

7:52
Bias Cat: Where is Teel falling to?

7:52
Eric A Longenhagen: Great question, he feels like good value from here on out too

7:52
Eric A Longenhagen: this draft is stacked

7:52
Guest: Eric, what level do you think crews will start at? As a nats fan I feel like we missed out on skenes to some extent

7:52
Eric A Longenhagen: High-A

7:53
sadtrombone: Don’t the Rockies usually avoid pitchers with Dollander’s fastball type?

7:53
Eric A Longenhagen: He’s more tail-oriented, He’s not sinkery but it isn’t quite rise, either

7:53
Guest: Blake Mitchell is the first player mlb network has given any tool grade less than 50. Is that a sign of overhyping players for TV viewers, a different definition of value compared to you, or is it something else?

7:53
Eric A Longenhagen: I have sympathy for the MLB broadcast tool grades because they don’t wanna put a 3 on a top ten pick’s tools

7:54
Guest: do the Mariners have any chance at getting Noble Meyer? If not, who do you see them taking?

7:54
Eric A Longenhagen: They could, would be for way over slot

7:54
Pat: Any word on whether Detroit got a discount on Clark or whether they just preferred him?

7:55
Eric A Longenhagen: Great question. The buzz via text was mixed Langford/Clark and I wonder if they decided Clark because the numebr was lower…

7:56
Eric A Longenhagen: Getting Noble Meyer here to Miami

7:58
Guest: Any Giants intel? Great work as always Eric

7:58
Eric A Longenhagen: nothing yet, folks say their process is sequestered to just a guy or two

7:58
Ben: Best/worst organization fit so far?

7:58
Eric A Longenhagen: Any pitcher in Colorado, right?

7:59
Eric A Longenhagen: I get why they do it this way, though

7:59
Guest: Anything on the Red Sox?

7:59
Eric A Longenhagen: Will let you know as we get closer

8:01
Ben Schneider: With the talk about Mitchell, what does it take for a HS catcher to progress in pro ball as a hitter and catcher? So many falter or change positions

8:01
Guest: Do Rockies just have to throw all their lots at pitching because no one will sign there as a FA?

8:01
Eric A Longenhagen: Yes

8:02
Eric A Longenhagen: And they’re confident they can scout midround hitters

8:05
Eric: Where does Teel land now?

8:05
Eric A Longenhagen: idk, this fels like a good spot

8:06
Sean: Best guess as to which high schooler from this class is most likely to reach MLB first?

8:06
Eric A Longenhagen: Clark is so polished, I’d guess him

8:08
Eric A Longenhagen: Getting Tommy Troy to Dbacks

8:08
Guest: Thoughts on Schanuel pick?

8:08
Eric A Longenhagen: He can hit, he’ll move fast, fits their style

8:08
Eric A Longenhagen: Not sexy, you hope he tracks like Manzardo

8:08
Mike: Matt Shaw to the Red Sox?

8:08
Eric A Longenhagen: think their pocket’s getting picked…

8:10
Eric A Longenhagen: So thinking Troy to ARI then Matt SHaw to Cubs

8:11
Gronch: What kind of team should draft more high schoolers all things considered? A small market team unlikely to sign premium free agents? Or a deep pocketed club that can paper over higher variance strategies with cash?

8:12
Eric A Longenhagen: I think both examples present sound logic, I think the bang for the buck of the first one is more meaningful

8:13
Ben: Any dope on if Mitchell is a strategic underslot for the Royals? Or if they just really like him?

8:13
Eric A Longenhagen: under was the rumor this week

8:14
DBRuns: what pick in the back half of the first round do you feel most confident about?

8:16
Eric A Longenhagen: I’ve got nothing on Boston here yall

8:16
Eric A Longenhagen: first time all night, congrats to them

8:16
Beef: Any idea where the Nats go at 40? pitching?

8:19
Eric A Longenhagen: Probably good HS bats left there

8:19
Eric A Longenhagen: BOS rumors all over..Teel, Colt Emerson, on Brayden Taylor…

8:20
Eric A Longenhagen: getting Jacob Gonzalez CHW buzz

8:20
Boston: Grade Teel to Boston.

8:21
Eric A Longenhagen: 60

8:21
Guest: Is it crazy/impossible for Giants to go Nimmala AND Martin?

8:21
Eric A Longenhagen: No, I think Arj’s camp would love for him to go today at all, so it’s very possible

8:23
Jeb: how do you pronounce the vowels in Schanuel? Like Samuel?

8:23
Eric A Longenhagen: Shan you ell

8:23
Bias Cat: Is there actually a legit chance of Arjun falling out of the top 2 rounds?

8:23
Eric A Longenhagen: Oh i meant first round

8:23
Eric A Longenhagen: not all day today

8:24
Adam D.: Talk to me, Eric. Giants, what are they doing???

8:24
Eric A Longenhagen: working on it…

8:26
Jorge: What does Braves pick look like without Dana Brown in the driver’s seat this year?

8:26
Eric A Longenhagen: Bet it’s similar, real stability there

8:26
Eric A Longenhagen: Ronit and the crew obvisouly do a good job

8:26
KMo: Do the O’s still have a locked-down draft room?

8:26
Eric A Longenhagen: I texted someone there just to see if they were in the room or not and got nada back

8:29
Eric A Longenhagen: Think this pick is Bryce Eldridge for SF, Keith is sitting next to me and has a Bradfield

8:32
Eric A Longenhagen: sounds like Bradfield to Baltimore

8:32
Andy: Hi Eric, thanks for doing this….Do you think Milwaukee sticks with their model of taking up the middle bats? Could you see them taking a 3b with guys like Taylor, Morales, wilken and Miller on the board?

8:32
Eric A Longenhagen: I think either of Taylor or Morales is good value now but think Taylor’s bat to ball data is not up their alley

8:32
Drew: Why was the Giants’ draft room only 1/4 full (on MLB Network)?

8:32
Eric A Longenhagen: lol like i said, sequestered

8:32
ATorres: How far will Hurston Waldrep fall?

8:32
Eric A Longenhagen: Gotta think MIL or TB pops him

8:33
Eric A Longenhagen: stuff is too nasty

8:33
Red Sox fan: Hey Eric, any quick thoughts on teels biggest strengths and weaknesses?

8:34
Guest: What happened to Maximo Acosta on the rangers prospect list?

8:34
Eric A Longenhagen: Teel rakes, his frame is slight for a catcher

8:35
Eric A Longenhagen: Acosta is not a SS and i worry he won’t hit. gotta do one of those

8:37
Guest: So does it look like the Giants have an organizational strategy to develop a 2-way players?

8:37
Eric A Longenhagen: Yes

8:37
Nostradamus: Who ends up the bigger star: Crews or Druw Jones?

8:37
Eric A Longenhagen: Druw Jones is looking ROUGH

8:37
Trades: Whats the reasoning behind no trades other than comp picks? Parity?

8:37
Eric A Longenhagen: Honestl i just thnk people don’t wanna deal with the chaos

8:38
Eric A Longenhagen: getting brock wilken here

8:39
Eric A Longenhagen: to milwaujkee

8:39
Will: Wouldnt chaos be fun though?

8:39
Eric A Longenhagen: yes, para mi pero MLB no

8:41
Infamous Harold: What do you know about Matt Shaw from the cubs pick?

8:41
Eric A Longenhagen: Have scouting reports here: The Board | FanGraphs Baseball

8:41
Eric A Longenhagen: click the clipboard

8:42
patty: Do you think teel will be overslot because he fell to 14?

8:42
Eric A Longenhagen: nah

8:42
Eric A Longenhagen: slot

8:42
Guest: Any word on who the A’s may be targeting with Wilson savings?

8:42
Eric A Longenhagen: So many HS hitters still around, not sure they have a specific target

8:42
JD: Is Bo Bichette a fair Jacob Wilson comp if he grows into a 15 hr a year player?

8:43
Eric A Longenhagen: No. Kevin Newman floor, righty Adam Frazier, righty Arraez if he hits his ceiling

8:44
Eric A Longenhagen: Brayden Taylor here to TB

8:44
Jon: Is that Kiley on ESPN? Have you gotten a chance to catch up with him yet?

8:44
Eric A Longenhagen: oh yeah, seen plenty of Kiley last few weeks.

8:45
Mike: I’m curious, but what’s the point of trying to get the name a few seconds early? Is that more fun than analysing what’s happening for you? Genuinely curious, I know we’ll get great analysis later.

8:45
Eric A Longenhagen: The only time I ever flex

8:46
Eric A Longenhagen: pure flex to be working multiple picks ahead, and I get a charge out of navigating this chat and my phone

8:47
Eric A Longenhagen: Think we might see Arj go to Toronto

8:47
Guest: Any word on what TOR is looking for?

8:48
Eric A Longenhagen: Nimmala, pretty strong

8:48
Jeb: re: flex – thanks for the honesty. And thank you for crazy amount of content the past few weeks

8:48
Eric A Longenhagen: welcome, i love baseball and am happty to have this job

8:48
Eric A Longenhagen: i’m clinging to the wing of the plane bro

8:48
RAndoM: Any possible medical issues with Waldrep that could be causing him to drop?

8:48
Eric A Longenhagen: Not that I’ve heard about

8:48
Eric A Longenhagen: relief risk maybe

8:50
Eric A Longenhagen: So Nimmala and then Chase Davis to STL

8:54
Eric A Longenhagen: Colt Emerson to Seattle after Chase Davis

8:55
Guest: Am I just a fanboy or does Waldrep sound like a Yankee pitching prospect to you too?

8:55
Eric A Longenhagen: Don’t think he gets there

8:55
Shapes: any thoughts why cardinals would pass on waldrup? Seems like they are desperate for pitching

8:55
Eric A Longenhagen: Just BPA for them I think. He’s good

8:56
Ben Schneider: At this point is it fair to say the Jays are more willing to draft risk than other teams?

8:56
Eric A Longenhagen: Yes

8:56
Guest: Perez on ESPN just said that Arjun prays to the Sun God ???

8:56
Eric A Longenhagen: Not any crazier than any of the others, I can see the sun is actually there!

8:58
Pants: Where’s the spot for post draft beers?

8:58
Eric A Longenhagen: Better question for Meg but I’m gonna be writing until I pass out

8:58
Bill: What is your favorite pick so far?

8:58
Eric A Longenhagen: Wherever Waldrep goes

9:00
Anders: Tell me why the emerson pick for seattle isn’t terrible

9:01
Eric A Longenhagen: He’s a lefty-hitting shortstop with a sweet swing and a great shot to stay there. He’s basically what Coel Young was, and that’s working out

9:01
Guest: Any Braves intel

9:01
Eric A Longenhagen: Think they’d do Waldrep if he’s there but not firm

9:01
Eric A Longenhagen: have some Ralphy Velazquez buzz to CLE but not confirmed

9:01
Mike: Guardians hard to predict

9:01
Eric A Longenhagen: Yes

9:03
Hoz: who the ‘dres (padres) going with this year? Another unexpected i.e. merrill

9:04
Eric A Longenhagen: Have them on HS bats, Velazquez was one but he’s gonna go to CLE I think

9:04
Mike: Houck to Atlanta ?

9:04
Eric A Longenhagen: Waldrep to ATL I think

9:08
A: Waldrep is up before the end of the year if he goes to Atlanta?

9:09
Eric A Longenhagen: Would be interesting, they def push guys fast but Waldrep already thrown so many innings

9:09
Eric A Longenhagen: Think SD got their pocket picked by CLE and are now on the phone trying to cut a deal

9:10
Bowie: Any word on who NY is taking

9:10
Eric A Longenhagen: George Lombard, but I don’t have SD yet which is hilarious

9:10
Dan: So the Mariners basically have two Cole Youngs now?

9:11
Eric A Longenhagen: Young has bulked up enough that he’s now a much different player. Skill foundation was the same as Emerson a year ago but now Young is a jacked 2B with power

9:11
Guest: Yankees not taking Stafura???

9:11
Eric A Longenhagen: lol no and I’m pissed because I mocked Lombad there earlier in the week

9:11
Eric A Longenhagen: actually now it might not be Lombard, hold please…

9:12
Eric A Longenhagen: the other name i have isn’t stafura tho…

9:14
Eric A Longenhagen: Okay now I’m getting: Dillon Head to SD

9:15
Sam: thomas white to nyy or going hitter route?

9:15
Eric A Longenhagen: Have a mix of George Lombard and Thomas White to NYY right now, stronger signal for Lombard

9:16
Wire Fan: Who do you think is best available with Walderp off the board

9:17
Rob: Love your work, appreciate all the content.  now that we’re getting closer, who’s connected to HOU at 28?

9:17
Eric A Longenhagen: Workgin on it, i need Phlly first

9:20
Ryno: How much sleep do you get during this time of year?

9:20
Eric A Longenhagen: It’s been a rough couple months but I still get at least six every night

9:20
Eric A Longenhagen: wait until we’re done and I sleep until the deadline

9:20
Travis: Is Waldrep destined for the bullpen

9:21
Eric A Longenhagen: It’s plausible but he’ll be so nasty there you’d still love having him as a 1st rounder

9:24
Guest: How do the Braves keep getting away with their sorcery?

9:25
Ben: Was Bradfield under slot at all? Elias likes a deal, but seems like he went roughly where he was gonna go.

9:25
Eric A Longenhagen: I think you’re right, that 11-16 range was where Enrique got mentioned, slot

9:25
J: Is Aidan Miller’s price too high at this point? Read he is a draft elg sophomore if he goes to school.

9:25
Eric A Longenhagen: Good point but think he goes to Philly here

9:27
Guest: Brice Matthews at 28?

9:27
Eric A Longenhagen: hey, you’re good

9:27
Ryan: Do you know any reason why Houck hasn’t gone yet?

9:27
Eric A Longenhagen: There was some buzz that he had injury stuff but I don’t know specifics

9:27
Sam: So why lombard over stafura? Do you agree on yankees going that route?

9:28
Eric A Longenhagen: I have Lombard WAY over Stafura. Well-rounded SS with feel to hit and burgeoning power

9:29
Eric A Longenhagen: So Houston is on Brice Matthews

9:29
Ted Yost: You going to stay wojing thru the comp round?

9:30
Eric A Longenhagen: nah i gotta start writing and my phone is gonna die

9:30
Bob: How does NIL play into signability these days?

9:30
Eric A Longenhagen: Still getting a sense of that but indeed it’s a factor, especially when SEC schools are throwign around so much money

9:30
DJ: Any prep guys starting to be at risk to get to campus? Miller seems like a tough sign for the Phillies

9:30
Eric A Longenhagen: they probably aren’t taking him without knowing the number

9:33
George: Early ARJUN NIMMALA comps? Some are saying Soriano they do have similar swings

9:34
Eric A Longenhagen: He’s either righty Nolan Gorman or Keoni Cavaco

9:34
Stats5: Thanks for doing the chat tonight, Eric.  And for your outstanding work leading up to tonight, and all year.  Get some rest.

9:34
Eric A Longenhagen: Soon! Not yet, my will is good

9:34
Nate: Do you think the Giants going Crawford and Eldridge helps attract Shohei?

9:34
Eric A Longenhagen: Couldn’t hurt

9:34
Bob: Manfred’s reactions to the crowd are so dislikable

9:34
Wire Fan: Manfred does not seem happy with the Seattle reaction

9:35
Eric A Longenhagen: Getting Tai Peete and Jonny Farmelo to SEattle

9:36
Chase: Is Tai Peete to the Rays at 31 still a thing felt like that was a consensus thing in a lot of mocks.

9:36
Eric A Longenhagen: pocket picked

9:36
OsOptomist: I mean they did boo a kid getting drafted

9:36
Eric A Longenhagen: yeah that’s not great

9:37
Eric A Longenhagen: but hey I’m from Philly so…it’s fine

9:37
Danny: Sorry if someone asked this above, but Kiley had a fun article  about this being a good year for a team to blow through the bonus pools and sign multiple high level prep guys, even suggesting the Yankees as the team to do it. Any rumblings of them actually doing this and if they did, would we not hear about it until day 3 after drafting a couple of their build-a-pitchers?

9:38
Eric A Longenhagen: This is part of why it’s a tough thing to execute, you have to keep it a secret, except you kinda cant because the agents have to know to some degree that you’re doing it

9:39
Dipoto: How is Seattle affording three prep first-rounders?

9:39
Eric A Longenhagen: Dunno that any of them are over slot, and if they are they could cut with someone later. look at Reds draft last year

9:46
Eric A Longenhagen: okay sorry, i had to fight with the Cespedes BBQ guys about whether i get credit for the farmelo mock pick or not

9:46
Eric A Longenhagen: okay, get those questions in because i’m gonna have to write here soon

9:47
Eric A Longenhagen: Think Adrian Santana to TB and then Houck to Mets

9:49
Drew: Is Peete a reach? By how much?

9:49
Eric A Longenhagen: Nah, huge power

9:51
Guest: Where will Crews be on your overall big board? When will it be updated?

9:51
Eric A Longenhagen: It says where they’ll be on the draft board The Board | FanGraphs Baseball

9:51
Ken: Does Gelof last until the A’s at 39?

9:52
Eric A Longenhagen: I think so, that’d be cute, right?

9:52
Guest: Morales to Marlins?

9:52
Eric A Longenhagen: That’s what I’m hearing, si.

9:52
Eric A Longenhagen: but long way to go for that one

9:52
Byron Denniston: Thanks for doing this btw!

9:52
Eric A Longenhagen: You’re welcome. Are people betting in real time? That’d be hilarious to me.

9:53
Caleb: Could Matthews have been there for Houston at 61? Seems like a reach…

9:53
Eric A Longenhagen: Honestly I’m hearing teams in the comp round were thirsty for him, wanted him BAD

9:53
Eric A Longenhagen: I have to revisit his report

9:53
Guest: Why did you rate Dylan Crews as “high risk?”

9:53
Eric A Longenhagen: Risk just means “variance” but I can’t fit that in a column header

9:55
Byron Denniston: Can it be arranged for Thomas White to last to pick 68?

9:55
Eric A Longenhagen: Yeah if you’ve got the dough. Same as Porter last year, number has gotta be 3 mil+

9:56
Other guest: Is the variance skewed up or down relative to his FV?

9:57
Eric A Longenhagen: Up, usually. 60 FV most of them are gonna be high variance because the ceiling is so big

9:57
Eric A Longenhagen: the upside is variance too

9:57
Eric A Longenhagen: Josh Knoth here to Milwaukee

9:58
Eric A Longenhagen: Gonna woj two more times then east and write

9:59
Guest: What are you writing?

10:00
Eric A Longenhagen: Recap and analysis of the draft

10:00
Guest: What’s been your favorite Woj of the night?

10:01
Eric A Longenhagen: having skenes prior to the podium

10:02
Boston: Think Thomas White could give Boston a discount compared to other teams?

10:02
Eric A Longenhagen: Think he’s gonna go before the end of the comp…

10:02
Drew: Why is the MLB Draft being held in an NFL stadium?

10:02
Eric A Longenhagen: Space

10:02
Eric A Longenhagen: infrastructure

10:02
Eric A Longenhagen: amenities

10:02
Eric A Longenhagen: wifi

10:02
Eric A Longenhagen: TV needs

10:02
Guest: Any word on the Reds at 38?

10:02
Eric A Longenhagen: not yet

10:03
Ellis: Is today your favorite night of the season?

10:03
Eric A Longenhagen: Nah, Deadline stuff when I’m slinging dope and reports to my friends is the best

10:04
Twin Person: What is a Charlie Soto and why?

10:04
Eric A Longenhagen: Huge velo sink/tail, Brusdar redux imo

10:04
JR: Floyd at 42 for fun?

10:04
Eric A Longenhagen: Lol that’d be sweeeeet

10:05
Eric A Longenhagen: Think Miami is doing Thomas White here

10:05
Vic: Wemby 27-12 tonight

10:06
Eric A Longenhagen: Spurs Suns is gonna be a hot ticket in town

10:06
Eric A Longenhagen: hottest since Hamilton came to Gammage

10:07
Eric A Longenhagen: not sure on the White stuff, just have the one source (but it’s a good source)

10:07
Guest: Thoughts on the playlist here?

10:07
Eric A Longenhagen: Honestly I’m largely in my own head and blocking out most non-draft noise

10:07
Eric A Longenhagen: i’ve ignored Keith like 5 times tonight

10:08
Farm Value: The ‘dollar value’ of a farm system is one of the coolest recent adjustments in my mind – used to be arbitrary in a way

10:08
Eric A Longenhagen: gracias, Craig Edwards (now with MLBPA) and Kiley deserve credit for aspects of that

10:09
Eric A Longenhagen: okay my brain needs juice to write. I’m gonna do the dodgers pick if i can get it and call it a chat

10:12
Eric A Longenhagen: Dodgers are cutting a deal with Kendall George

10:12
Bob: someone needs to tell Ravech that the Dodgers are sitting 1st in the NL West at the break

10:12
Eric A Longenhagen: I’ll go yell at him

10:12
Eric A Longenhagen: he’ll wonder who the hell i am

10:13
Eric A Longenhagen: okay guys, i’m gonna go write.

10:13
Eric A Longenhagen: thanks to the literally thousands of you who came by

10:13
Eric A Longenhagen: come back tomorrow to read recap and analysis

The Mariners fans weren’t booing a kid getting drafted: they were booing the video display of Yordan Alvarez’s massive home run that knocked the M’s out of the playoffs last year. Or rather they were booing Houston’s choice to show that particular clip in Seattle as the lead up to their drafting.

Oh that would definitely get boos lol.

But for the sake of accuracy, assuming the HR they showed was Yordan’s walkoff off of Robbie Ray, that was in game 1 so technically didn’t knock the Mariners out of the playoffs.
