FanGraphs Audio: The Splendid Dayn Perry

Episode 536
Dayn Perry is a contributor to CBS Sports’ Eye on Baseball and the author of three books — one of them not very miserable. He’s also the definitely splendid guest on this edition of FanGraphs Audio.

“émigré”, Carson.

French pronunciation /emi’g?e/
American pronunciation /’?m?g?e/ (That’s how I think you Americans pronounce it, at least.)

Note the plain old boring G. Cut it out with the soft Gs. I thought you spoke French, you miserable specimen.

Damn formatting. The first ? is supposed to be a uvular fricative (i.e. the French R). The second is the vowel in “bent”. The third is the vowel in “pin”. The fourth is a regular American rhotic R.

Splendid Table is from APM not NPR. I thought you were supposed to be a white northeastern liberal, Carson, you’re supposed to know these things.

LMU’s coach was Paul Westhead. A separate entity from Paul Westphal. RIP Hank Gathers.

What did I just listen to? A nonsense sandwich between two slices of Herb Alpert.

From the LA Times:

“Students and staff at the small campus of brick Colonial-style buildings were shocked 18 months ago when Nobles was forced to resign over allegations of financial improprieties. That was bad enough. But then the details of his alleged secret life began to trickle out: hints of offshore bank accounts, tales of far-flung liaisons with prostitutes and a mysterious vial of strychnine found in his office.”

Strychnine!? Who was this dude, Billy Lee Tuttle?
