Two-way Japanese star and coveted free agent Shohei Ohtani recently submitted a questionnaire to all 30 major-league clubs. What if one were to submit a similar sort of questionnaire to his or her own prospective employers? What if Travis Sawchik, specifically, were compelled to do it on a podcast? The present edition of FanGraphs Audio addresses nearly all of these questions.

I am still not understanding why Travis or Carson or anyone are giving any credence to the player’s claims to BAM revenues/equity.

They did little to create it, and surely if anyone (other than the actual owners) has claim to BAM revenues/equity, that would be the workers who actually designed and developed it? Instead the players are just conducting some crass rent seeking where they try to chisel out some money because they happen to have some negotiating power.

“There would be no game without us”. That is just as true of the front office talent, the medical staff, the marketing people, and so on. They are one group of people in a big machine, and certainly not a group that would have been capable of making BAM on their own. Hell they don’t even do a good job of protecting all player’s interests as we see in the recent international and amateur draft “Negotiations” where they consistently decide to harm future and minor league players for the benefit of current players.

You could replace them with the next 650 players and in a seasons 90% of people wouldn’t care. They could go and try to go play for the Winnipeg Goldeneyes and see how irreplaceable they are to the overall revenue situation. Baseball is a big ecosystem with many many parts, of which the players are just one.

If unions are just going to be used for base money grubbing I don’t think they really have a role in our society. Simply medieval guilds dressed up in new language, creating a tax on everyone else while they work to put up barriers to new entrants into their field.
