I’m not so sure of the assumption that just because the players earns what he’s paid in terms of combinatory production, that the positive contributions outweigh the negative contributions in terms of World Series odds.

Comparing Lofton and Ichiro straight up with WAR is misleading. Lofton coming into the majors three years younger than Ichiro (25 vs. 28) gives him a big advantage as some of, if not their best, years are ages 25-27 as players whose skills mainly derive from athleticism. I don’t think it’s a coincidence Lofton’s best three year stretch according to fWAR was his first three full years in the bigs. Ichiro missed out on the same luxury, possibly playing his best years in Japan.
