Job Posting: New York Mets Baseball Analytics Positions

Position: Analyst, Baseball Analytics

Location: Queens, NY

Summary:
The New York Mets are seeking an Analyst in Baseball Analytics. The Analyst will summarize data and build reports that inform decision-making in all facets of Baseball Operations. This position requires strong background in coding, statistics, and data visualization, as well as the ability to communicate findings to both a technical and non-technical audience. This particular analyst will have a focus on short-term questions that require the use of data manipulation and visualization. This offer may be for a full-time or associate role, to be discussed at the time of the offer. Prior experience in baseball is a plus, but is not required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Query data to answer a wide variety of questions from other members of the Baseball Operations department, often of a short-term nature
  • Build customizable reports to effectively display data-based conclusions
  • Present model outputs in an effective way, both for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Communicate well with both the Director and Manager of Baseball Analytics as well as other Baseball Operations personnel to understand the parameters of any particular research project
  • Provide advice on the desired outputs from the data engineering team, and guidance to the Baseball Systems team on how best to present model results
  • Assist with recruiting, hiring, and mentoring new analysts in the Baseball Analytics department
  • Ability to work quickly and prioritize among multiple overlapping ad hoc projects

Qualifications:

  • Masters and/or BS degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field
  • Professional experience in a quantitative position is a plus
  • Background in a variety of statistical techniques is a plus
  • Strong proficiency in R, Python, or similar, as well as strong proficiency in SQL
  • Experience in data visualization is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of data engineering and front-end development is a plus, for the purpose of communicating with those departments
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others, and to take control of large-scale projects with little or no daily oversight
  • Prior knowledge of baseball is required. Prior experience working in baseball is a plus, but is not required.

Position: Scouting Associate, Major League Strategy

Location: Queens, NY

Summary:
The New York Mets are seeking a Scouting Associate, Major League Strategy, in the Baseball Analytics department. The Scouting Associate should be an individual with a passion for baseball analysis and scouting. The Scouting Associate will analyze baseball data and video to provide insights within the areas of game strategy and preparation. This is an entry-level position which will run from February 2022 through the end of the 2022 major league season.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create and compile advance scouting reports and deliver them to MLB coaching staff and other personnel.
  • Handle ad-hoc information requests pertaining to player performance and game strategy.
  • Collaborate with both the Baseball Analytics and video departments to provide insights using information and video to prepare for upcoming opponents.
  • Deliver recommendations to improve major league game strategy.
  • Provide data- and video-based expertise on catcher defense, outfield defense, pitcher management of the run game, positioning and managerial strategy, and more to gain a competitive advantage.
  • Assist coaching staff with administrative tasking including submission of lineups, scheduling, team communications, and more.
  • Keep staff up to date on roster moves and transactions across the league.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Experience querying and managing data with SQL/R/Python is a plus.
  • Familiarity with baseball-specific data (i.e., motion capture, Trackman, Statcast) and knowledge of current baseball research is a strong plus.
  • Detail oriented and organized with ability to balance multiple projects.
  • Strong verbal communication and collaborative skills.
  • Prior playing, coaching, or scouting experience in baseball/softball is a plus.
  • Experience operating technology including motion capture, Trackman, Rapsodo, high-speed cameras, and BATS or other video coaching software is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, or holiday hours with willingness to adjust availability to the baseball schedule.
