Job Title: Professional Scout

Department: Player Personnel
Reports To: Director, Player Personnel
Status: Exempt
Dates: Must be available to start by January 1, 2022.

Primary Objective: Responsible for providing support and assistance to the Director of Player Personnel in all facets of player evaluation.

Essential Functions:

  • Evaluate players at varying levels of professional baseball.
  • Maintain working knowledge of Mariners systems, processes, and philosophies.
  • Proactively communicate preferences, ideas, and broad-level takeaways throughout the Personnel department.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. Equivalent, relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of formal education, if approved by management.
  • Some level of work experience in professional sports preferred.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Committed professional with strong grasp of player evaluation.
  • Outstanding communication (both verbal and written), organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, including but not limited to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must always act in a manner that is fair and ethical.
  • Track record of problem-solving skills and decision-making abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be innovative and proactive in promoting new ideas.
  • Must exemplify a collaborative approach in dealing with management and peers.
  • General knowledge of industry procedures and operations.

Physical Activities and Working Conditions:

  • Travel and evaluate all assigned coverages, including nights and weekends.
  • Regularly collaborate with Baseball Ops leadership in developing self-improvement plans in all areas, including goal planning and reviews.
  • Author and provide reports, preferences and recommendations in all forms of player acquisition (Trade, Free Agency, Rule 5 Draft, Rule 4 Draft, 6-Year Free Agency, etc.).
  • Relocation may be necessary
