Introducing Our New Contributing Writers
In January, we put out an open call for contributing writers. The response we received was overwhelming. Over 500 people submitted applications, and we are very grateful that so many smart, passionate baseball writers wanted to be a part of what we do here. It made for some really difficult decisions (and a rather long hiring process), but we are very excited to welcome six new contributors to our ranks.
A quick note to those who applied but weren’t hired: please keep writing. A number of people who have come to work for the site weren’t hired on their first go, but kept getting reps elsewhere on their way to making us regret having passed them by initially. Just because there wasn’t a home for you at FanGraphs this time around doesn’t mean that there won’t be one later, and in the meantime, public baseball analysis will be made better by your good words and good work.
And so, without further ado, allow me to briefly introduce the writers whose work will be debuting on these electronic pages soon.
Rachael McDaniel
Rachael has written at Baseball Prospectus, Vice Sports, and The Hardball Times, authoring work encompassing a whole range of baseball topics past and present. Rachael is currently in the creative writing program at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and following the conclusion of the academic year, will assume the role of managing editor of The Hardball Times in addition to writing at FanGraphs as a contributor.

Devan Fink
Devan has spent the last two years as a featured writer at Beyond the Box Score and the previous four years blogging for his own website, Cover Those Bases. He loves analyzing the latest current events and trends in baseball, ranging from the most minute aspects of the game to the largest, most impactful tendencies league-wide. Outside of baseball writing, Devan is currently a senior at James Madison High School, where he serves as an editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, The Hawk Talk, and as the captain of the debate team. He will be attending Dartmouth College next fall, where he plans to study quantitative social science. Devan resides in Northern Virginia with his parents, brother, and his four-year-old cockapoo, Ike.

Sung Min Kim
Originally a broadcast journalism student at Maryland, Sung Min took a sports writing class as a fun elective and went from there. Since his debut at The Hardball Times, he has been writing about the Yankees at River Avenue Blues. He has also written about Asian baseball for publications like VICE Sports, The Sporting News, Baseball Prospectus, and The Athletic. Sung Min will explore different aspects of Asian baseball while also writing about major league subjects.

Ben Clemens
Cardinals fans may recognize Ben as a writer from Viva El Birdos. He always wanted to play baseball and be a famous writer growing up — he got ‘baseball’ and ‘writer’ at least, though he’s still working on ‘play’ and ‘famous.’ Working in financial markets made him interested in the decision-making and game theory aspects of baseball; he’s now answering the truly important questions, like whether Matt Carpenter should swing more on 3-0. He lives in New York but will soon be moving to San Francisco.

Audrey Stark
Audrey attended her first MLB game in June 2003 with her Girl Scout troop. While watching Albert Pujols through binoculars from an upper section of Busch Stadium II, she realized that baseball was the best sport on the planet. Audrey began writing for SBNation in 2016 at Beyond the Box Score; she has also contributed to Viva el Birdos and Federal Baseball. She has a degree in political science.

Octavio Hernandez
Once a beat writer in the Venezuelan Winter League before becoming the assistant GM for Leones del Caracas in that same league, Octavio currently works for Diablos Rojos del Mexico as the chief of the Advanced Metrics department. Now he’ll return to his roots as a writer, focusing on Latin American major league players along with providing some insight into what’s going on in the Mexican League and the Caribbean Winter Leagues. He is a man with a mission: to help Latin American baseball get on board with advanced metrics. He hopes you will join him on his ride.

You’ll begin to see work from these six writers appearing at FanGraphs soon. We hope you’re as excited for them to get going as we are.
Meg is the editor-in-chief of FanGraphs and the co-host of Effectively Wild. Prior to joining FanGraphs, her work appeared at Baseball Prospectus, Lookout Landing, and Just A Bit Outside. You can follow her on Bluesky @megrowler.fangraphs.com.
So happy to see Sung Min Kim here. I’ve learned so much about the KBO from his stuff and look froward to reading more of his work.
thanks for your kind words, Dylan!
As a fellow Korean, glad to see more KBO coverage. 축하드려요!
Dear Sung Min Kim, what can you tell me about Starcraft? 😀
It’s great to see you over here from RAB, sir! Welcome!
I second this. He was at the very top of my wish list. I know almost nothing about baseball in Asia, and he was (and still is) a tremendous source of knowledge. I love his work, and am thrilled to see him here.
Statiz is like the Korean Fangraphs equivalent. The English translations do not make much sense at all so you’ll need the stats from a mykbo.net or a different stats site to help cross-reference them.
All I gotta say is KBO/NPB have a much more fun baseball fan culture in the stadiums, with songs for each player that people chant much like European soccer
I remember when SMK was getting started on RAB, and here he is graduating to Fangraphs. So good to see
I agree, Dylan — Sung Min was doing fine work over at Prospectus. Korean baseball is a subject near to my heart. I lived in Korea for 8 years and really enjoyed the Korean game, in some ways more than MLB. I think a lot of readers would really enjoy watching these games in person. Baseball tourism, anyone? Go Kia Tigers!
Congrats to all the new writers!!! Love hearing from new voices (at least new for me) and excited to see what you’ll be contributing!
So who will be the rookie of the year?
Great opportunity for these folks, but replacing writers like Dave Cameron and Jeff Sullivan with a high school student is a little eye-opening. We’ll see how it plays out.
They’re drafting people with high upside. They’ve added more writers than they’ve lost, so not everyone needs to pan out. And there are some good established voices here.
Will Kylie and Eric be putting an FV on them??? 🙂 🙂 🙂
I agree with you there but golly do I feel old…
Doesnt really deserve the down votes, there are huge shoes to fill in the MLB analysis space here.
It’s understood that when leaves, whoever replaces them is a risk and has big shoes to fill. Picking out the least established of these new writers to compare to Cameron or Sullivan feels like a dig.
We all know they have big shoes to fill. They have big shoes to fill. Someone needed to fill those shoes, and the facts is that the only way to fill them is by writing good writing for a long time. It’s also important to help develop and cultivate talent. The comment deserved the downvotes because he was pissing on the welcome parade and nobody fucking needed it. He could have just gone to take a nap or something, everyone is better served by that.
Totally agree (and I’m not just saying that because I work here). Publications that don’t seek out new blood die or at the very least, lose their vitality. You can’t just add veterans like me or Jay.
Also, as a free content website, Fangraphs has to employ a Rays-like staffing model, replacing quality with (slightly lesser known) quality.. You and Jay are basically Tommy Pham and Charlie Morton in a sea of solid control-years talent (plus Devan Fink as the Wander Franco of baseball blogging).
Well done again, Mr. Appelman!
I agree Dan but I hope you vets will be educating young master Fink in the unwritten rules of baseblogging. Gotta bean him if he starts his chat on time, etc.
I don’t work here, and I’m not obligated to throw anybody a parade. Tomahawk gets to comment on the hires if he wants. (and his is actually fairly benign, really) Interesting how FG’s ‘Please give us $20’ splash boxes are getting more frequent, and yet the ‘either think like us in this-and-that-and-that-and-this important way or go away you f’ing loser!’ messages are just as so.
Honestly, is there a single reader here whose absolute first impression wasn’t ‘A high schooler!? Really?’
I think the more common first thought was like Moltar’s: oh, wow, I’m old.
I mean, I think most people’s first impression would be “Wow this must be a really good and talented writer to beat out 494 other applicants and I trust the Fangraphs leadership did their homework before hiring them” and not focus on how old they are…
Correct. Most people are not dicks
Congrats to all!
the thing is, in a couple months he’ll go from a high schooler to an ivy leaguer and all of a sudden it looks a lot better
he has rich parents and he has an incredible drive. $100 says he is the Phillies GM by 2035.
“rich parents” is a statement, not an insult btw
downvotes for….
Well, my first reaction was Hell Yeah, he’s from Northern Virginia. Then my second was, his school is one of my school’s “crosstown” rivals. Personally, I hope his production at FG is superlative, and ends all debate. After all, he did finish in the top 1% of a stiff competition, so he certainly has a track record and something going for him.
First thought: “Holy crap, a high schooler.”
Second thought: “Damn, he must be a good writer then.”
Third thought (whilst typing this): “Shit, he’s as old as some of my students.”
“He could have just gone to take a nap or something” made me lol in this coffee shop and now people are looking at me funny.
To be fair, they could have been looking at me funny the whole time.
I think the responses to my comment shows that people care about this website. Everyone who is here wants to see the site continue to do well. While no one is expecting Devan or any of the other writers to replace Dave or Jeff, a lot of people are crossing their fingers in hopes that the site is able to maintain it’s level of excellence.
There isn’t a community forum on this site, so I disagree that this isn’t the appropriate place to voice concerns. These writers are big boys and girls and they can hopefully handle some very very mild skepticism about the site without it ruining their parade.
Gotta say, my reaction was a lot more “Holy crap, Fangraphs hired a high school student—this guy must be good!” Looking forward to reading Mr. Fink’s stuff.
What were most of s doing in High School? I was certainly not thinking about my career, unless I was going to get paid for going to parties and driving around after they got busted. Good for you Devan, this is a great opportunity for you.
BtBS has had some awesome content the last couple of years. I’m really excited to see it continue on Fangraphs!
News flash: No one expects Devan Fink to be Cameron or Sullivan. I, however, am very excited to read his work. I was a decent high school writer but I didn’t have the chops to get published anywhere, and definitely didn’t have the stats to do it.
These hires aren’t about “replacing” anyone, but filling Fangraphs with new writing. Hiring a Sullivan clone wouldn’t satisfy people who just want Sullivan, and it wouldn’t satisfy people who want fresh ideas.
And I’m sure if you were better you could have gotten the job. But guess what? You didn’t. So leave the kid alone, I’m sure he’s great (and better than you)
We’ve had other people in, or just out of high school write for the site. This isn’t really a new thing.
I remember one of them did some PHENOMENAL analysis and writing on THT. I can’t remember his name at the moment, but I think he got scooped up by an MLB team.
You’re thinking of Max Weinstein. And yes, he did. But David is right, Max wasn’t the only one at either FG or THT. https://tht.fangraphs.com/author/dodgersbythebay/
He said “we’ll see how it plays out”. He’s allowing for the upside that psweeting talks about below. Not sure why he needs 32 down votes and psweeting gets 54 upvotes. Not everything needs to be coached in rosy terms people. I’m also a bit surprised they hired a high school student, but I guess we’ll see how things go!
Don’t you think it’s COOL that he’s in high school and done all this writing already and is now a writer for FG? I do! It doesn’t make me feel old, it makes me feel like an underachiever!! Go Devan!
I believe I could have written credibly for any number of music or sports magazines when I was 17, back in 1984-85. I’m willing to bet if they hand’t told us that he was a high school student, we’d have never guessed.
Welcome to Fangraphs
Yall have some big shoes to fill. Congrats and good luck!
I want a rookie crew bold predictions set and a declared champion at the end! Welcome to Fangraphs!
Awesome to have someone try making sense here in English of the delightful nonsense KBO League is (among other things)!
amazing additions. well done.
Fantastic in so many ways, thanks for adding a wonderful set of new writers and voices!
OH HELL YEA I AM EXCITED
It’s a big tent here at Fangraphs. Looking forward to reading articles from all the new hires. I must admit I am especially intrigued by the young man who is on the cusp of entering college. Our society needs to do a better job of welcoming the perspectives of youth . . .
Pretty small tent, I’d say. Leastwise till 1 of the newbies comes out with a pro-Trump comment of some sort, or says ‘I favor management on this issue’. A dozen people of assorted colors/genders/ages/orientations who all dwell on the same side of numerous issues just strikes me as smally-tented.
I’m certainly not expecting 1 ‘Trumper’ here, nor do I think such would accomplish anything, even in terms of overall balance. But the Cameron FG was both very quantitative and avowedly apolitical, with Sullivan being very much so. It’d be nice to get that replaced by 1 of these writers.
Good point! I definitely look forward to fangraphs hiring someone to analyze the metrics of QAnon and the lizard people who run the country. Because it is written in the constitution that if you suggest people be kind to women or lgtbq folks, then you have to give equal time to people who think Hillary Clinton is keeping children in the basement of a Washington DC pizzeria. What part of the constitution? The part that the mainstream media won’t tell you exists, obviously!
FOH
Will be interesting to see how many net upvotes this gets.
“Will be interesting to see how many net upvotes this gets.”
Biased, lying attacks on conservatives always get upvotes on FanGraphs.
Imagine being so invested in a narrative of victimhood that you troll a bunch of strangers about politics on a baseball website in a deliberate effort to provoke their contempt and prove how unfair your life is.
You make some good points here and I’d be interested in subscribing to your newsletter
Cincinnati Chili > Lizard People
“A dozen people of assorted colors/genders/ages/orientations who all dwell on the same side of numerous issues just strikes me as smally-tented.”
Nailed it.
This new group is very diverse, therefore they must oppose my politics isn’t like, the best look.
“It’s a big tent here at Fangraphs.”
It’s a very tiny tent, and only progressive viewpoints go unpunished. About 40% of Americans are Trump supporters, and I would bet money that no one who writes for FanGraphs is a Trump supporter.
“Waaaaah. People dont put up with me being a ignorant asshole any more. Waaaaah”
Take a walk. I’m sure barstool would be happy to have your pointless MAGA whining.
And yet most Trump supporters are objective, analytical thinkers who thrive on rigorous, principled debate in an open marketplace of ideas, which is what makes their underrepresentation in this community so puzzling.
Wait, this Devan Fink guy is a HIGH SCHOOLER?! What?!
FWIW, I know a couple of the people at the QSS undergrad program at Dartmouth. It’s among the best of its kind, so Devan, you picked well.
I’m stoked to see the new voices about baseball around the world.
They want folks to “contribute” money for content generated by a high school senior?
Glad I never took the plunge.
Perhaps you could explain why his contributions have less inherent value based solely on his age?
Not sure what you mean by “contribute” in quotes. I give Fangraphs $20 a year because they churn out content that is worthwhile to me. If that stops happening, I’ll stop being a member. It’s that simple.
I feel guilty for not being a member because this is a site I come to at least three times a day, but I’m a poor college student
Good. Go fuck off to Barstool then.
Also why didn’t you go with “content” instead of contribute? Get gud @ trolling m8.
I have a membership because I support an awesome podcast and a fangraphs membership is a convenient benefit of my contribution.
Welcome to the site! Good luck to all of you. Let’s hope you all inject some humor into your writing….
Welcome to all! I am both looking forward to a broad array of new perspectives and also hoping one or more of these or other writers bring the perspective Dave and Jeff previously provided. I hope both are possible.
I have read some of Rachael’s work at BP and have found it to be very well written, deep, and sometimes moving.
I’m not as familiar with these writers as it sounds like some other people are. So, as someone whose only exposure is these writeups, I am SO excited to start reading this group! Thanks for assembling such a remarkable cohort.
Octavio was fantastic on the podcast discussing Venezuela (also Harold Baines comedy): https://blogs.fangraphs.com/effectively-wild-episode-1307-the-baines-of-our-existence/
I thought that was him!
I’m going to enjoy the fresh baseball news outside of the MLB
Exciting to see such a young, diverse group of new talent! Welcome all!
Crabby old person: Kids are always on their phones, never devote serious thought to anything besides video games.
Also crabby old person: Why is a high schooler writing proffessionally? Leave that to the older folks!
I am rooting for Devan(he’s a good Twitter follow too). Good luck to all the new writers, don’t worry too much about filling other people’s roles.
And now we have attacks on the elderly being upvoted. Sad.
We have attacks on crabby old people being upvoted. Nice old people are, well, just fine!
Less old man yells at cloud, less downvotes.
A big welcome to all the new writers – especially to Devan Fink!
Don’t take some of the negative comments too personally. I don’t think it matters how old you are and the work you have done for BeyondtheBoxScore certainly qualifies you for this opportunity. All the best. We are looking forward to your contribution and insights.
A thousand times this. None of these people were hired without writing samples. These are all people who’ve been doing work out there in the world. All the people who are freaking out/chicken littling this can just go, IDK, read what these authors have put into the world previously and make a call on whether they’re worth reading.
this is the hypest fucking post, oh my god, it’s like the first round of the draft except every player is going to your team. so many new voices!!!! i am AMPED
As a high schooler myself, I’m expecially excited for Fink, but Sung Min Kim also excites me.
Also good hires? Stark Hernandez Clemens and McDaniel
Really excited for these new writers! Respect for Fink making the cut, must have impressed in the interview and you know, Ivy League school prospect. Lots of different writing backgrounds that I look forward to reading articles from. Welcome to the FG community.
Meg,
Thanks for the nice introduction to your new fellow writers at FG. By the way, having read Mr. Fink’s work at Beyond The Boxscore, I am looking forward to his having the ability to research and write more in-depth analysis on our favorite sport. Welcome.
Welcome, everyone!
Hey look, a (soon-to-be) UBC grad! Welcome to the best damn baseball writing team.
Which one is going to restart NotGraphs?
We can always ask. And hope.
If it’s any consolation, I know for a fact that none of the new writers were responsible for any of the comedic user accounts that periodically post comments on this site. Just ne….sayin’.
I for one am shocked, SHOCKED, that the most contentious part of these hires is not that 1/3 are Cardinals writers/fans. I’m starting to get concerned that 3 years of missing the playoffs has knocked us out of our “most hated non-Yankee team” spot. I demand to be discriminated against in the manner to which I’ve grown accustomed!
As a Cubs fan I find this very worrying. I come here for objective analysis and funny quips, not Alex Reyes puff pieces or someone extolling the (non-existent) virtues of Busch.
I drank Busch in college sometimes because it was cheap. So that’s at least one virtue.
Oh no, I meant the stadium not the piss-water beer.
For $12 you can have one at the stadium
Oh snap! Some heavy hitting veterans and a few talented rookies! This is no ordinary “tear it all down” type of rebuild!
Oh I like her already. I fully expect alot of references to………the implications.
I admit I was on the lookout for a Seff Jullivan sneaking in there, but no matter.
Congrats to the new crew! I’m especially excited to read what Octavio will be doing.
Such an exciting group of new writers joining! Looking forward to seeing what sort of new content and ideas stem from the youth and fresh talent.
Welcome to all. This grumpy old codger looks forward to the coming influx of fresh takes.
Excellent intro, I’m especially excited about seeing Rachael here because now I have daily Blue Jay articles to look forwards to, right? RIGHT? 😀
COOL! A good ole NoVa boy. Even if he does go to Madison. Welcome Devan Fink.
— A G. C. Marshall alumnus (Class of 1978)
I’m ecstatic that Rachael is the new editor for THT. This was my hoped for outcome.
Shockingly haven’t been blocked on twitter by any of them which means they aren’t completely awful communists or living in make believe land like a lot of THT or BTB writers.
Best of luck. Huge shoes to fill in what I would call the most critical hiring time period. I have already found myself coming here a lot less frequently after Cameron left and definitely less after Jeff left so now is a critical time.
Lots of great content out there from the athletic and barstool for baseball about baseball (not how it relates to the working class struggle and imperilalizarion of sugar farmers in the Dominican Republic). Really hope fangraphs remains a must click for me multiple times a day.
Happy to give the noobz a fair shot
What a fabulous and diverse group! I’m so excited! Same for Craig doing Fri chat!
Which of these writers will hyper-focus on baseball’s idiosyncratic moments and endearing minutiae?
Regardless, welcome all.
I’m grateful for the diversity (on all fronts) of this group.
This seems as good a post as any to make the following observation:
I love Fangraphs. I truly do. It’s on my go-to list every morning, even in the off-season.
But lately, I’ve noticed that there’s a lot more Rotographs posts (statistically speaking) than there used to be. I have nothing against Rotographs. It serves a valuable statistical purpose, much as the rest of the site serves a valuable (and often enough) statistical purpose. But when I read an article about the decline of the 1B/DH type (for example), I’d rather see it in real world baseball terms, not in rotisserie terms.
Again — both points of view have their place. And both places are here on this this site. But, and this is simply my personal preference, I’d rather you leaned to contributors on the actual business of MLB games (Sheryl Ring most definitely included in this preference, together with Craig Edwards and others) than to articles that rank relief pitchers in quadrants depending upon which particular fantasy draft league is relevant to those relief pitchers.
Great site in any case. I will continue to pay and to come back, and who knows? I might even learn to shut up when I’m annoyiing the residents.
Theres always a spike in fantasy content at this time of year because it’s in its highest demand
curious what advanced metrics were used when evaluating the candidates? insights per paragraph? Cameron Index? %likelihood of reinstating notgraphs?
how do you project the younger writers? you drafted a toolsy high schooler.
Congrats to all!
Looking forward to hearing from this great team! Good job.
Gotta say, as a recent college graduate, I think getting some younger voices on Fangraphs is a plus! Not to say Fangraphs skews older, but I worry not a ton of people my age follow baseball at this level.
Anyways, congrats to all the new writers and hats off to Fangraphs for assembling such a diverse bunch!
