Jeff Sullivan FanGraphs Chat — 11/16/18
9:03 |
: Hello friends |
9:03 |
: Welcome to Friday baseball chat |
9:04 |
: Bartolo Colon is objectively better than Nathan Eovaldi change my mind |
9:04 |
: I neither want to nor have to |
9:04 |
: Have you figured out how I can get Syndergaard yet? |
9:05 |
: Well, you have the most valuable farm system in baseball |
9:05 |
: That would be a good place to start |
9:05 |
: As discussed earlier, the biggest issue here is that the Padres have outfielders and the Mets don’t need outfielders, but you can still find a fit here. Involve another team. Maybe the Cleveland team! |
9:06 |
: Sad to hear that Carson is leaving, he’s a gem. |
9:07 |
: It’s a testament to David Appelman that every single person who has wound up leaving FanGraphs has agonized over the decision, even despite the wonderful opportunities ahead. This is a hard place to leave, even when a freakin baseball team is throwing its resources at you |
9:08 |
: Personally, I’ll miss Carson at the FanGraphs get-togethers. It’s a rare sort of internet writer whose presence is more enjoyable in the flesh |
9:09 |
: Would the Giants trade posey? Would he be a good option for Nats? Catcher in 2019 then eventual transition to 1B post ryan zimmerman |
9:11 |
: You can’t rule out any move, especially any move by a front office under a brand-new decision maker, but Posey has full no-trade protection, and he just *feels* like one of those guys who’s going to stick around. Worth a phone call or two, but if I were the Nationals, I wouldn’t expend too much effort if the Giants are reluctant |
9:11 |
: I don’t know why I said phone call when I meant text message |
9:11 |
: They’re always text messages |
9:12 |
: Seems to me the Giants will make a Bumgarner decision before they ever make a Posey decision |
9:13 |
: The Blue Jays should try to trade for James Paxton, right? They obviously need starting pitching, and while Vlad is clearly untouchable, they still have enough in their farm system to make a deal. The Jays may not look like they’re in a position where it makes sense to trade a big package of prospects for a guy with two years of control left, but given the giant maple leaf tattoo on his arm, I’m assuming Paxton is a proud Canadian who would be open to signing an extension with Canada’s only MLB team. Acquiring not only an ace but a Canadian ace is one way they could bring some excitement back to the fan base after they suffered the biggest attendance drop of any team this year. Are they really just going to sit around and watch the Yankees trade for him and let the rest of the division continue to pull further and further away from them? |
9:13 |
: You’ve touched on part of the problem — if you’re the Jays, you can be reasonably happy with your core talent, but you’re looking up at the Yankees and Red Sox, *plus* the Rays are entering a competitive window. It’s already a really tough division |
9:14 |
: Which doesn’t mean a Paxton trade wouldn’t make sense. Paxton probably would be open to signing an extension. But other teams are probably more incentivized to make the move, meaning other teams would probably leave the Blue Jays outbid |
9:15 |
: Toronto’s not in a position to willingly overpay here |
9:15 |
: If we start with Paxton for Gray, who comes back to the Ms to make this even? |
9:16 |
: Bare minimum, Sheffield and Frazier. And Frazier right now is a complete unknown, with low trade value |
9:16 |
: Who is the biggest name to get traded this offseason? Realmuto? Kluber? other? |
9:16 |
: Realmuto is probably going to be the best player traded, but I don’t know if he’s the “biggest name” |
9:17 |
: James Paxton |
9:17 |
: potentially Paul Goldschmidt |
9:17 |
: Don’t think Corey Kluber gets traded, but I could see Carlos Carrasco on the move |
9:17 |
: Who wins 100+ games again next year: Red Sox, Yankees, neither or both |
9:17 |
: Yankees |
9:18 |
: Jeff Mathis two year deal wooooo |
9:18 |
: I don’t think there’s anything to say about Mathis’ bat that hasn’t been said, but the Rangers have needed pitching help very, very badly. This will indirectly provide it |
9:19 |
: It’s a bad pitching staff, and a relatively inexperienced pitching staff. I’m open to the idea that Jeff Mathis might improve the rate and the height of their collective development |
9:19 |
: What would you think of something like Chris Taylor for Francisco Cervelli, Richard Rodriguez, Max Moroff, and Lolo Sanchez? The Dodgers probably don’t _need_ Taylor, and Cervelli fills in at catcher until Smith/Keibert are ready, Rodriguez is a great reliever add, Moroff has similar MiLB numbers to Muncy, and Lolo is a solid young outfield prospect that they seem a bit light on. |
9:20 |
: Max Moroff is on the Indians now |
9:21 |
: Let’s sub in Erik Gonzalez, I guess |
9:22 |
: Don’t think the Pirates would be interested. They want to be competitive in 2019 and they can’t keep getting rid of years of team control, like they did in the Archer move. That’s not how a team like that should operate |
9:22 |
: Any plans to go to Tokyo or London for the MLB games? |
9:22 |
: No! |
9:23 |
: What would it take for the Mariners to pry Austin Hedges away from the Padres? |
9:23 |
: Here’s the problem: look at the Mariners |
9:23 |
: This would have to be part of, say, a hypothetical Paxton trade |
9:24 |
: The Padres would be interested in very few of the Mariners’ prospects. And they’re probably higher now on Hedges than they were a few months ago anyway |
9:24 |
: This is not a question, but rather a request: Please do not abandon us for a front office! YOUR READERS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR CAREER, JEFF. |
9:26 |
: How many front offices allow their employees to do things like “work remotely” and “go backpacking” and “close their computer” |
9:27 |
: Say the Rays offer Josh Donaldson, a three-year, $60 million contract with an opt out after the first year. Does that make sense for both sides? |
9:27 |
: Don’t think the Rays would want to run that risk for 2020/2021, if Donaldson keeps getting injured. They’d probably rather just offer a big, flat deal for one or two years |
9:29 |
: The Rays right now are projected for a payroll of like $41 million, which is laughably small. Arbitration starts hitting for real two and three years out. Might even make a case here for a front-load |
9:30 |
: Jeff, are you the next Fangraphs writer to leave for a major league team? |
9:30 |
: You’d think Carson’s news would be all the proof you need that these things are completely unpredictable |
9:30 |
: What do you think of the Padres’ apparent strategy of trying to trade for an All-Star (Syndergaard, Suarez) after the season they had? Are they getting ahead of themselves? And would they be better going after not quite All-Stars (Eovaldi) in FA? |
9:31 |
: Just generally speaking, the Padres are looking to be aggressive. They’re looking to get better, and Preller gets in contact with everyone, about everybody |
9:32 |
: They’re coming off a down year, sure. And the Dodgers are going to be strong again. But the Padres have money to spend, and the game’s best farm system, and I bet they don’t feel real threatened in 2019 by the Rockies, Diamondbacks, or Giants |
9:32 |
: With a good offseason, the Padres could creep north of .500 as soon as next year. It’s worth working toward |
9:34 |
: So, uh, is Mike Elias the GM of the Orioles or not? |
9:34 |
: Sure seems like it. But maybe he’s failed the physical |
9:35 |
: I hate to ask, but it’s killing me not knowing what is going on with the Astros’ front office. Hints have seemingly been dropped that there’s something at play there outside of guys leaving for higher posts elsewhere- is there trouble in paradise? |
9:37 |
: I don’t have any meaningful connections to Houston, but if I had to speculate, some people haven’t loved working under Luhnow. And then, of course, there’s the part where the Astros have been immensely successful, so some individuals would be pursued for other openings, elsewhere, by teams who want to pry some of that knowledge away |
9:38 |
: The most successful front offices tend *not* to stick together forever |
9:39 |
: I know the offseason hasn’t even really started yet, but as of now, what percentages would you give the following scenarios for 2019: 1.) The Indians don’t win the AL Central 2.) The Astros don’t win the AL West 3.) The Dodgers don’t win the NL West 4.) Neither the Red Sox or Yankees win the AL East |
9:40 |
: 1) 20% |
9:40 |
: 2) 40% |
9:41 |
: 3) 30% |
9:41 |
: 4) 20% |
9:44 |
: Where have all the cowboys gone? |
9:45 |
: Since they extended Kershaw and re-signed Ryu, what other plans (other than Harper) should they pursue? I thought Charlie Morton on a 2 year deal would be nice, but it seems like they don’t need anymore starting pitching. Maybe Herrera or Miller on a one year deal to bolster the pen? |
9:45 |
: Definitely wouldn’t be surprised to see a sexy addition or two to the bullpen. The Dodgers have prided themselves on turning lesser names into capable relievers, but they could always use more depth |
9:46 |
: They also need a catcher. They aren’t going to run with Barnes and Farmer |
9:48 |
: Don’t know if they’ll go so far as to trade for Realmuto, but someone like Gomes is an option |
9:48 |
: Ditto Cervelli |
9:48 |
: Castro and Martin would be somewhat interesting buy-lows |
9:49 |
: I’m always surprised at how slow free agency is for the first month. Logic seems to dictate that unless the offers out there are exactly fair to both sides, someone should benefit from agreeing to a deal sooner rather than later, especially considering what has happened to some FAs in the past, right? |
9:51 |
: I think it’s easier for teams to predict the layout of the trade market than the free-agent market. You don’t always know what’s going to end up looking “fair” — the Phillies, last year, thought they had a good deal with Carlos Santana, and then by the end of the offseason it looked like an overpay |
9:52 |
: But front offices are texting about trades all the time. The trade market is just ahead of the free-agent market, in terms of how it’s developed. And then you have more “hidden” factors, like the GM meetings, and Thanksgiving, and November being the prime hiring month |
9:53 |
: A few free agents will jump at early opportunities, and maybe we’ll see more of that as we go along, lest free agents be left out in the cold, but teams generally want to not pay free-agent prices if they can help it |
9:55 |
: What are the chances the Braves make a deal to trade Johan Camargo? If they did, what would they need in return? Could you see a 1-for-1 Hunter Renfroe for Camargo deal happen? |
9:56 |
: I’d rather have Camargo of the two, but you can see the outline of something realistic here. Maybe the Braves also get a reliever. Both players have the same number of team-control years remaining |
9:57 |
: I’d like to give you my Xmas wishlist for new writer hires. Someone with experience and insight into player development would be aces, even if that isn’t the traditional analytical domain of Fangraphs. |
9:58 |
: FanGraphs is looking. But you don’t find many people with baseball experience looking to work on the public side. At least, not many good people, with constructive and insightful things to say |
9:58 |
: The good ones tend to stay in the industry, once they’re in the industry |
9:59 |
: Thoughts on Elias spearheading Baltimore FO? |
10:01 |
: Just more of the same spread we’ve been seeing for years. Teams are all run with increasingly similar principles. You can throw the Giants in here too, with Zaidi. With Elias, it’s going to come down to how much power he actually has to move and hire as he wants, and for the Orioles it’s going to be a while before they’re on a solid foundation again. But I don’t know how this wouldn’t be a huge improvement |
10:01 |
: In 2018, is there diminished value to the BBWA voting on the MVP/CYA/ROY? When we still have people who vote for the guys with the most RBIs or who play for the Yankees, it seems more valuable to just sort everyone by your favorite WAR variant and say “these people at the top all had incredible seasons.” |
10:02 |
: I’ve been a sports fan almost my entire life. I’ve never really understood awards. I’ve never understood what they’re doing, and I’ve never understood their significance. I’ve certainly never understood why some number of fans care about them so much |
10:04 |
: I know that people love to feel appreciated. Expressing appreciation is a positive. It’s less positive to turn that appreciation into a competition, where everybody but one person loses |
10:05 |
: Jeff…with several writers for FG moving to MLB over the past few years, how does the FG entity feel about this? Is it something that was inevitable? Is it something that is a very positive development? Is it a problem for FG? I just wanted your thoughts on this. |
10:06 |
: It’s just how this goes. The same thing happened a while ago to Baseball Prospectus. It only makes sense that the best public analysts would be pursued by baseball teams, and baseball teams can offer more money and greater benefits than a small-fries website |
10:07 |
: Not everyone is motivated by money, sure. It’s not everyone’s dream to work for a team. But it’s what *almost* everyone wants to do, or at least try |
10:08 |
: It makes it tougher for a website, but it’s hardly unexpected. And it does have a benefit; the website gets to say, if you want to work for a team, you should try writing for us. We can get your name out there |
10:09 |
: The fact of the matter is that every baseball team reads FanGraphs. That helps us find writers, and it also causes us to lose them |
10:09 |
: How much more bleak (bleaker?) can the Mariners get? |
10:09 |
: A whole lot bleaker |
10:10 |
: Their pitchers, for example, still have their health |
10:10 |
: (mostly) |
10:11 |
: If you had to pick one Major League player to defeat Darth Vader, who do you choose? Does bat control equal lightsaber skills? |
10:11 |
: I don’t know, but Willians Astudillo |
10:12 |
: Astudillo is up to 96 winter league at-bats, with zero strikeouts |
10:13 |
: (batting .354. three home runs yesterday) |
10:14 |
: What are the odds Jorge Soler finally stays healthy and productive? |
10:14 |
: I’m not super worried about his fractured toe |
10:15 |
: Let’s say 75% healthy/mostly healthy. Another 75% he’s an above-average hitter |
10:15 |
: That puts us at 56.25% |
10:15 |
: Just wanted to congratulate you on having a Cy Young Vote this year. You’ve long been one of my favorite writers, and it’s cool to see you having a voice in who wins these awards now. I mean, your vote was wrong, but Snell won anyway, so I’m not that mad at you. And I can’t blame you for trying to stay on Kate Upton’s good side |
10:16 |
: I’ve voted before for AL Rookie of the Year. And every single August, I live in dread that I’ll have to vote for Manager of the Year instead |
10:16 |
: Hasn’t happened yet, but I might accidentally one day make the wrong enemy |
10:17 |
: Good morning Mr Sullivan. Although I do agree with the MVP votings. Was deGrom really not MVP worthy enough to crack top 3? |
10:17 |
: I probably would’ve had deGrom at No. 1. Mayyyyyyyybe No. 2. But probably No. 1 |
10:18 |
: The A’s seem like a candidate to sign a top 20 FA player this offseason – I… er.. Billy Beane has come out and claimed that the A’s will begin to ramp up their payroll over the next N offseasons. |
10:20 |
: The problem for the A’s is they’re projected for a payroll around $78 million. Their opening-day payroll has topped out at around $87 million. And they’ve been phased out of revenue-sharing |
10:20 |
: They just don’t seem to be able to do very much. But they do need a catcher. And some bargain-basement rotation help |
10:20 |
: Grandal to the A’s… thoughts? |
10:20 |
: Seems too rich, unless his market has just cratered, which I can’t imagine is true |
10:21 |
: On paper, though, an excellent fit |
10:22 |
: If you could pick one player who didn’t perform well, but is a potential for a big bounceback in 2019, who would you pick |
10:23 |
: I don’t know if he’s No. 1 on my list, but a name that comes immediately to mind is Kevin Kiermaier |
10:24 |
: Also Steven Souza |
10:24 |
: Gary Sanchez, obviously |
10:24 |
: On the pitching side, I’m expecting a lot more from Tyler Mahle and Dylan Bundy |
10:25 |
|
10:25 |
: Sure, why not |
10:26 |
: Why hello there Jeff. Which Ozzie Albies is the real Albies? The first half guy with all of that pop or r the second half guy who couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat? Somewhere in the middle maybe? |
10:27 |
: First-half Albies, but with less power |
10:27 |
: First-half Albies was overachieving, but he’s a lot better as a player than how he finished |
10:27 |
: When will the Angels be good at baseball? |
10:28 |
: I think they can be *pretty* good in 2019. Does pretty good count? |
10:28 |
: Bartolo Colon is a national treasure! |
10:28 |
: *international |
10:28 |
: Blue Jays / Padres WS. Who are you cheering for? |
10:28 |
: Well, I was born in San Diego |
10:28 |
: So, Blue Jays |
10:29 |
: Sad to hear Carson is leaving. What’s a favorite memory from working with him? |
10:30 |
: Every time he laughed |
10:31 |
: So, uh, any chance the Rays can get Snell to sign one of those long-term, team-friendly extensions they like to sign their young pitchers to, or should I just resign myself to the fact that he’s going to be traded after the 2020 season? |
10:31 |
: Well, he is represented by the same agency that represented Matt Moore |
10:32 |
: But on the other hand, literally all of the remaining available evidence |
10:32 |
: I wouldn’t count on Snell, or anyone, to be a long-term Ray, but maybe it’s worth holding out hope for a positive ballpark announcement |
10:35 |
: How much of the Fraley for Plassmeyer portion of the Zunino trade was motivated by Tampa’s impending 40 man crunch? |
10:36 |
: Fraley is still a year away from Rule 5 Draft eligibility. So I would think this was almost a non-factor |
10:37 |
: It’s true that Plassmeyer has more years to go in which he can be left off the 40-man roster, but so much can change in a year |
10:37 |
: Harper doesn’t have any reason to sign before Machado, right? So this will take quite a long time, eh? |
10:37 |
: I expect it to |
10:37 |
: I’m thinking mid-January |
10:40 |
: What would you think of me giving up something like Ockimey, Denyi Reyes, and Antoni Flores to the Dodgers for Alex Wood? Feels like a guy that would play in Fenway well, and he may be the odd man out in LA |
10:40 |
: I had to look up every single one of those prospects |
10:41 |
: Given that Wood has one year of control left, he doesn’t have that much asset value. And he’s not the most durable starter around. I can’t speak to the Dodgers’ taste in the Red Sox’ minor leaguers, but there could potentially be something there |
10:42 |
: Alex Anthopolous has a tough decision..if you could counsel him.. do you point him in the direction of JT Realmuto or one of the TOR SP (Paxton/Kluber)? |
10:42 |
: Get a catcher |
10:42 |
: Do we make sense for Goldschmidt or Jose Abreu? |
10:42 |
: I think the Rays would rather spend money on a bat than prospect capital |
10:42 |
: Hence talk about Cruz or Donaldson |
10:43 |
: How important is smart decision making in the rebuild process? i.e. not giving Hosmer that contract |
10:44 |
: The Padres might make the argument that even though Hosmer’s contract looks bad, it’s not really holding them back that much at the moment |
10:44 |
: Smart decision-making is vital, but less in terms of free agency, and more in terms of drafting and scouting trade returns |
10:45 |
: The Brewers rebuilt without ever bottoming out because they identified players who could help them almost immediately. They’ve done an enviable job |
10:45 |
: Rebuilding teams can afford to waste money on bad free agents, more than they can afford to waste opportunities to bring in good prospects |
10:45 |
: What is the best realistic scenario in which the Royals return to contention? |
10:46 |
: Like, this year? |
10:46 |
: Hoo boy |
10:46 |
: Let’s assume you’re not talking about this year |
10:47 |
: They need pitching something terrible. You can kind of squint and see some potential building on the position-player side. The pitching side needs some Kluberization |
10:48 |
: A pitcher might suddenly emerge seemingly overnight, and the Royals could badly use that kind of story. A few of that kind of story |
10:50 |
: Is inciarte, newcomb, and the pitching prospect of Cleveland’s choice close for Kluber? How much more do you think? Also, genuinely sad Carson is leaving. |
10:51 |
: I could actually see something here, given a quality pitching prospect. Improves the Indians’ team-control situation without causing the team to take too large of a step backward |
10:52 |
: But then from the Braves’ side, you’re adding and subtracting at the same time. Which isn’t the best thing to do for a team looking to stay in the hunt. This is why the Indians make for a tricky trade partner |
10:52 |
: What kind of return could Marcus Stroman fetch in a trade? |
10:53 |
: He’s intriguing enough to bring the Blue Jays a reasonable haul, but I think his is a case you reevaluate in July. Lots, lots more upside potential there |
10:53 |
: Stroman’s trade value goes through the roof if he starts to convert some of his stuff into more strikeouts |
10:54 |
: Soooo… when will Mike Elias be calling you about rebuilding the Baltimore Orioles? |
10:54 |
: Pass |
10:54 |
: I find the Yankees search for a starting pitcher interesting. On one hand, they need an ace and, it seems, Kluber, Grienke and Paxton may be in play. On the other hand, they may not be able to get an ace w/o giving up more than they want out of their farm…and go the FA route (Corbin, Keuchel, etc.) What do you think happens? |
10:54 |
: One of both |
10:55 |
: Severino/trade target/FA target/Tanaka/Sabathia |
10:55 |
: what’s the best fit for Kuechel? i’m a bit surprised i haven’t heard any chatter about him going to philly |
10:55 |
: The offseason is early yet |
10:57 |
: Based on nothing, I could see him ending up in DC |
10:59 |
: I seem to remember you being on the Jordan Luplow hype train as well. Is it wrong to be irrationally excited he got traded to Cleveland? |
10:59 |
: I think he was a good get, for sure. Still have to make sure he doesn’t get buried, but he deserves at least 450 plate appearances. Pretty good eye, runs well. Better environment for him to convert his modest power into more dingers |
11:00 |
: Could turn into one of those quiet across-the-board positive contributors |
11:00 |
: When do you suspect trades/FA signings will heat up? |
11:00 |
: Could see a trade of significance or two before the holiday, but for the most part, after next week |
11:00 |
: Where do I end up? |
11:00 |
: Waivers |
11:02 |
: Do you think that the Orioles are able to conduct a bad contract swap to move Davis’ 92 million remaining. What contracts come to mind? |
11:02 |
: Woof |
11:03 |
: If you pay Davis down, then, I guess, there’s about $60 million left for the Rockies on Desmond/Shaw |
11:03 |
: Wouldn’t be the worst thing to try Davis in a better hitting environment, where the ball doesn’t break as much |
11:04 |
: Dombrowski is going to shell out for Kimbrel despite his inability to go multiple innings and his likelihood of total combustion in high leverage playoffs spots, right? |
11:04 |
: the Red Sox won the World Series |
11:04 |
: Serious question time, we’ve watched these rebuilders (Cin, SD, ect) accumulate talent for awhile now and do you know if waiting for rivals in their division to show weakness, like the Cubs have, has any influence on the timing of their first big FA/trade moves? |
11:05 |
: I don’t think it has direct influence, but in reality, rebuilders know they’re accumulating for the future, while teams who are good in the present often have to invest more long-term resources into the short-term to stay competitive |
11:06 |
: So the Cubs were always going to decline from their peak. Same with the Dodgers. Rebuilding teams bank on that |
11:06 |
: Thoughts on Today’s Game ballot? Who do you think should be in and what do you think will actually happen)? |
11:06 |
: That’s one of the reasons we hired Jay Jaffe. I have zero opinions on this |
11:06 |
: What would Sal Perez fetch in a trade? For reference, he has 4 years and about $48 million left on his contract. |
11:07 |
: I know you’re just asking as a hypothetical, but I can’t even entertain it. The Royals aren’t trading Salvador Perez. The Royals aren’t even trading Whit Merrifield. It just doesn’t seem to be how they operate |
11:07 |
: Do you think that Russell Martin to the Astros makes sense if Toronto eats some salary? It seems like Martin fits the mold of an Astros catcher. |
11:07 |
: I think he could be a backup option for them, for sure |
11:08 |
: All right, I need to get rolling. Post-chat podcast to record |
11:08 |
: So thank you everybody for hanging out, and I’m sorry for what I didn’t or couldn’t address. We won’t do it next week because of the holiday break, but until whenever we chat again, be well and have great days |
Jeff made Lookout Landing a thing, but he does not still write there about the Mariners. He does write here, sometimes about the Mariners, but usually not.

Love this answer! It’s the perfect response to the annoying “change my mind” meme.
