Jeff Sullivan FanGraphs Chat – 4/16/13

Jeff made Lookout Landing a thing, but he does not still write there about the Mariners. He does write here, sometimes about the Mariners, but usually not.

Two more doubles for Arenado yesterday. What do you expect from him this year?

Since Dave Magadan arrived as hitting coach in Texas there seems to be little improvement through the lineup, how is his relationship with the players evloving to this point?

His relationships with the players are evolving in various manners to this point.

1. Most of the people on here ask the same questions about the same prospects in every chat. You got your answer last week. Ask something creative or now so the guys who run the chats dont get bored with the crap being asked.

2. Most writers on this site are asses. It’s not just Dave and Sully. Every single one of them think they are gods gift to baseball, yet most of the projections and early opinions on players end up being wrong.. because stats only tell a small portion of the story. If you read this site exclusively for youe baseball info, you are doing it wrong, and padding the egos of guys who have nothing more than fan opinions just like you.

Comment From Kate Upton: Fantasy MVP
Everyone was making fun of the Astros for producing a terrible lineup, but two weeks into the season, they’re only slightly below average, while the Marlins have only scored 20 runs. Does this demonstrate that it is better to have 2-3 league average or slightly league average players and 6-7 bench bats than to have one superstar and 8 bench players (I know, SSS)?

Jeff Sullivan: It does not demonstrate that, because it’s been two weeks, Stanton has been hurt, and the two teams play in vastly different ballparks”

yes, too early to tell. But what a dumb answer about the ballparks considering neither team has really spent THAT much time in their own ballpark yet. The Marlins with 7 home games to this point and winless at home vs the Astros with 6 home games and only one win. Looks like those home parks are REALLY making a difference in this expert analysis. Should have just left it with too early to tell.

I shall leave it to others to object to your rampant assholery, not being as proficient a douchebagologist as yourself. Merely to point out that the Marlins have, in fact, been playing in “vastly different ballparks” from the Astros, as shown by the fact that they have not played in the same ballpark. Jeff Sullivan didn’t say home ballparks. He said ballparks.

3. You don’t think the Astros have a run scoring advantage over the Marlins simply based on home park?

Jeese, Jeff.

A lot of truth in what he said. Did he hit a nerve?

I was just thinking today–there is a guy on this site (a site I very much enjoy)–who writes on fantasy baseball. Stream this guy, stream that guy. He was in my same fantasy league for two years and I absolutely destroyed him.

I’m not saying I’m just saying. The poster is right, sometimes the writers here try way too hard or get too cute with their sleepers, stream pitchers, etc.

If that’s me “being a fuck” then fine.

Hey Jeff, since so many of us missed the point of your article about bad calls, can you just summarize it for us?

Allow me: Baseball events have mathematical measurable and .gifs that show what “actually happened”. But what actually happened is a tiny, dry bit of knowledge, a forgettable garnish for what really nourishes: a feast of good stories.

A good story is our our cultural memory of an event, and the ritual retellings by elders remind and bind us, incantation of collective heroes (David Eckstein) and Gods (Gene Autry) joyfully inspire us; remembrance of fallen comrades (Donnie Moore, Nick Adenhart) sadly reminds us to be grateful; scheming villains (AJ Przynski) and vile bit players (Doug Eddings) caution us against injustice; and our fearsome opponents (Dave Henderson) teach us the mutual respect required for virtuous competition.

Bad calls are mashed potatoes and gravy at the delicious feast of baseball stories.
