Jeff Sullivan FanGraphs Chat — 5/22/15

9:19
Jeff Sullivan: Welp, no good excuse today

9:19
Jeff Sullivan: Literally slept through my alarm for the first time in years!

9:19
Jeff Sullivan: So just think, this could’ve started *even later*

9:19
Comment From Bret
How long can Anthony Gose sustain this BABIP?

9:20
Jeff Sullivan: You mean the BABIP that starts with a 4 and where the 4 is followed by a 6?

9:20
Jeff Sullivan: I can buy him as a high-BABIP type — I can’t buy him as Ichiro on line-drive steroids.

9:21
Jeff Sullivan: Gose, interestingly, is also at a career-low hard-hit rate, which I didn’t expect. He hasn’t popped up, and I like his new swing, but ultimately he’s still an ordinary baseball player who has to follow ordinary rules

9:22
Comment From Josh G
So, Clay Buchholz. Has he figured things out?

9:22
Jeff Sullivan: Not gonna be convinced by a single dominant start against the Mariners, but it would be easy to say you should just look at his peripherals and believe in the strikeouts

9:23
Jeff Sullivan: We always tie ourselves in knots trying to reconcile big strikeouts and big runs, but at the end of the day, the strikeouts usually win that battle

9:24
Comment From Mark
What kind of black magic have Chris Bosio and Jason Hammel tapped into?

9:25
Jeff Sullivan: I don’t think he’s really any different from what he’s been in the recent past when he’s been going well. But he is more or less maximizing his skillset in Chicago, and it’s hard not to love six walks in eight starts

9:25
Jeff Sullivan: He’s getting caught the best he’s ever gotten caught, so that’s a factor here

9:26
Comment From mtsw
Do we live in a world where Ubaldo Jimenez is the Orioles’ best pitcher?

9:26
Jeff Sullivan: Just like they’re paying for!

9:27
Jeff Sullivan: The interesting thing about Ubaldo is that hitters just don’t try to swing against him. It’s almost like they don’t believe he’s going to throw strikes. So far, he’s actually thrown strikes, which is the damnedest thing

9:28
Jeff Sullivan: He’s similar now to what he was toward the end in Cleveland. Very positive sign, for a guy most fans didn’t want to see near the rotation in spring

9:28
Comment From Reginald Denton III
What do you expect to see from Cole v. Thor tonight? Worth watching?

9:29
Jeff Sullivan: Who would argue that isn’t worth watching?

9:29
Jeff Sullivan: Think about the alternatives. One of them has Sean O’Sullivan in it. One of them has Colby Lewis in it. One has Marco Estrada, one has Alfredo Simon…

9:30
Comment From MotorboatJones
Assuming you don’t have access to FIP/ERA related metrics, what should a newb look at when evaluating pitchers?

9:30
Jeff Sullivan: Walks and strikeouts get you pretty far on their own

9:31
Comment From mike t
Does bob melvin keep his job at the end of the season?

9:31
Jeff Sullivan: Right now the answer would be yes, but we’ll see how much worse things get in the coming months. I think Beane would be reluctant to put this on the field manager

9:32
Comment From Mike Honcho
Thoughts on Kolten Wong?

9:33
Jeff Sullivan: Selective pull power. It works for certain lefties. Kyle Seager comes to mind. He’s a real player at this point

9:35
Comment From Gregory Polanco
will I ever be a league average hitter Jeff? Should the pirates send me to AAA and have Harrison be the right fielder? I suck this year 🙁

9:36
Jeff Sullivan: I imagine the Pirates would say you don’t have a lot left to learn in the minor leagues. You’ve showed borderline acceptable skills against righties — you’re just been a wreck against same-handed pitchers. Polanco should play a little less, but he wouldn’t be the first excellent prospect to struggle for his first several hundred plate appearances

9:37
Jeff Sullivan: It’s not the most encouraging thing in the world to see a higher pull rate but no more power

9:39
Jeff Sullivan: Sorry for hiccup, having connection issues

9:39
Comment From Bartolo Colon
Should I be concerned about walking 2 batters in my game against the Cards? Also did you see that I was a base-runner in that game and made it all the way to 3rd!?!

9:39
Jeff Sullivan: You’ve scored four runs in your life! Three of them last season

9:40
Jeff Sullivan: Colon has never gone first to third on a single

9:40
Jeff Sullivan: Never first to home on a double

9:40
Jeff Sullivan: Never second to home on a single

9:41
Comment From S
Wilin Rosario’s bat has come to life since moving to 1B/DH (in AL parks). What’s his value like for AL teams? Should the Rockies be trying to move him right away?

9:42
Jeff Sullivan: Not going to be a market right away — most teams out there aren’t yet really interested in trading. Rosario’s value is modest. Teams aren’t going to love him as a defender, and they know it’s kind of a boom-or-bust offensive strategy. Teams always say nice things about right-handed power but this isn’t a tremendous organizational asset

9:42
Comment From Catoblepas
What kind of leash do you give Mike Napoli? He’s looked reaaaaal bad, but it’s also been less than 150 PAs

9:43
Jeff Sullivan: I think Dave was supposed to write about this. Maybe he still is? Said as much the other day

9:44
Jeff Sullivan: Specifically because it’s hard to imagine why he’d suddenly be so much worse, I’d give Napoli the benefit of the doubt. But I’d start by giving him one less start a week, and then progressing from there if he doesn’t improve

9:45
Comment From Josh G
Addison Russell’s plate discipline has really improved over the last two weeks. Do you think he can continue to make strides this year or will he just be very inconsistent from week to week?

9:46
Jeff Sullivan: Oh, he’ll be inconsistent. You have to expect inconsistency from 21-year-olds in their first exposure to the major leagues. Even the better version of Russell hasn’t made an outstanding amount of contact, so he’s still figuring things out. They didn’t even really give him a chance to figure out Triple-A. It’ll be a decent season for Russell, but it won’t be close to what he could and should be at his peak

9:47
Comment From Some Person From Some Place
So, not only does this Mariners team just feel so…Mariners yet again this year, but they and the rest of the AL West are just that fantastic example of baseball being hilariously good at making preseason predictions look silly. And, in another month, they’ll make happy/sad fans look silly again! Baseball is so great! For real though Cano is not having a great season so far.

9:47
Jeff Sullivan: At least we basically nailed the Rangers

9:48
Jeff Sullivan: What’s happening in the AL West is probably good for baseball — weird-ass surprises are good for baseball — but it’s obviously hard to watch this Mariners team and feel like you want to keep watching it.

9:50
Jeff Sullivan: Cano looks gross. Remember the alleged Nelson Cruz protection element?

9:50
Jeff Sullivan: I think Cano himself said “I’ve never seen so many hittable fastballs!” Well he’s sure as shit not doing anything with them

9:51
Comment From _David_
What would Ketel Marte have to show to change your mind? He currently has an .839 OPS and a 1:1 K/BB in the PCL.

9:52
Jeff Sullivan: He’s never going to hit and the organization has questions about his defensive reliability. Assuming the defense shores up, he can be something like an average shortstop, but you don’t get far when you don’t have any power

9:52
Jeff Sullivan: Might not be markedly worse than Chris Taylor, but Chris Taylor isn’t a very good player

9:53
Comment From Tommy
Is Devon Travis 4 real?

9:53
Jeff Sullivan: The awesome April version or the miserable May version?

9:55
Jeff Sullivan: Ugh, sorry, internet crashed again. This is the worst chat of my life

9:55
Jeff Sullivan: Travis is a legitimately good player. He’s not, on true talent, the best hitter in the Blue Jays lineup

9:55
Comment From Ed
You slept until 9AM? How old are you? Seventeen? Get to bed early like the rest of us geezers who work for a living.

9:56
Jeff Sullivan: I went to a concert last night, then came home to edit the community blog and plan a weekend backpack. I don’t make a habit of sleeping through alarms but these were unusual circumstances!

9:56
Comment From alex
What’s wrong with Robinson Cano?

9:57
Jeff Sullivan: Here’s what we can figure — he’s presumably not in the stage of his career where he’s getting better. He’s also probably moved on from the nice flat plateau. So we have a star player in decline. Also, a star player who has drawn criticism before for just not looking like he’s trying. Because he plays so smoothly, it looks bad to the eye when it isn’t working

9:57
Jeff Sullivan: Can’t imagine why Cano would’ve fallen off of a cliff. He had a rough start just last year. A matter of making one or two swing adjustments, that he’s been able to make before. But these are bad signs when you’re not even 20% through a 10-year contract

9:58
Comment From Prich
How much gutting do you think the Brewers should do… will end up doing?

9:58
Jeff Sullivan: According to reports, Lucroy is off the table. Now, I don’t know why you’d keep Lucroy while being willing to sell off almost everything else, but I guess you need some sort of piece to build around

9:59
Jeff Sullivan: It’s always easy to recommend that a struggling team blow everything up and sell off what can be sold. It’s tougher to put into practice, when you have considerations like “who is going to want to watch this baseball team and pay money for the privilege?”

10:00
Comment From Mike T
Does Trumbo to the blue jays to play first make some sense?

10:00
Jeff Sullivan: Not sure the Blue Jays want to end up that right-handed

10:01
Comment From _David_
Should the Mariners consider switching Walker and Montgomery?

10:01
Jeff Sullivan: It’s not like Montgomery has been awesome in Tacoma. I’d give Walker until Iwakuma is healthy again. And then, without improvement, Walker goes and Elias stays

10:02
Comment From JCougar
What do you make of Brian McCann: defense-first C that was never expected to be more of a fringe/backup, but has hit in 2013 in AA and 2014 in AAA, and now is off to a solid start in the majors. Think he can sustain this impression of an above-average starter?

10:02
Jeff Sullivan: (James McCann)

10:04
Jeff Sullivan: McCann introduced some power into his game. Wasn’t there before, but it developed, just enough so that his bat can play semi-regularly. I doubt he’s much more than an average catcher at his peak, but he can be one of those quietly effective types, not unlike Caleb Joseph

10:05
Comment From Darth Stout
Read your JABO article. Do you see a realistic deal between the Cubs and Reds for Cueto/Chapman?

10:05
Jeff Sullivan: There’s no question in my mind the Cubs could make that happen if the Cubs wanted to make that happen

10:06
Jeff Sullivan: The Reds are in position to be looking for almost anything. Start a package with Schwarber and you’ll have their attention

10:06
Jeff Sullivan: Granted, if the Reds feel like Schwarber is destined for first base, that might not be the sort of player they prioritize…

10:07
Comment From J!mbo
Is Cameron Maybin breaking out (again)?

10:07
Jeff Sullivan: An encouraging thing, I think:

10:08
Jeff Sullivan:
career GB%: 55%
2012-14 GB%: 56%
2015 GB%: 42%

10:09
Jeff Sullivan: The last time I thought Maybin was something, he turned into nothing, but I can definitely buy him as a guy who’s made an adjustment to hit like an acceptable regular

10:09
Jeff Sullivan: I don’t think he’s breaking out into stardom or anything, but an average hitter who can play center field? Not bad for a throw-in

10:10
Comment From Ryan
Did The Big Apple Bartolo Colon finally run out of magic in that arm? He’s been shelled in his last few starts.

10:11
Jeff Sullivan: Over the starts previous, he was the opposite of shelled

10:11
Jeff Sullivan: He is what he is. Hasn’t *improved* from last season but also hasn’t gotten worse. Still a good and unusual pitcher, and sometimes good pitchers get shelled by the Cardinals

10:13
Comment From ANGRY at Wacha
Why isn’t Wacha striking anyone out? Is there something in his swinging strike rate, arsenal change, velocity loss?

10:14
Jeff Sullivan: The dropoff, really, is limited to Wacha against right-handed hitters — against lefties, he’s still basically himself.

10:15
Jeff Sullivan: And righties are seeing more cutters, fewer changeups — with more grounders, it looks like part of a conscious approach, to maybe retire hitters faster. Working toward efficiency, and whatnot. But Wacha’s repertoire is intact and excellent. And you could argue the strikeouts are coming — 12 in his last 12 innings

10:15
Jeff Sullivan: I can’t think of why Wacha would stop missing bats. There will be more whiffs in the months ahead

10:16
Comment From Phillies113
Ryan Howard is heating up slightly! The Phillies had indicated they’d eat $50m of the $60m he’s owed in order to trade him. Given that the season has progressed steadily and Howard is now owed less than $60m (as the Phillies have paid him a portion of that for this year), is it becoming more likely that Howard could be moved than before the season began, if the Phillies are still looking to pay $50m of whatever is still due to Howard?

10:17
Jeff Sullivan: If the Phillies are still willing to eat the same, but if Howard is now due some millions less, then yeah, that increases the odds, because it means the trading team has less to take on

10:18
Jeff Sullivan: But I don’t think anyone’s going to suddenly believe Howard is back to being a star hitter. Everyone knew he still had some power, but he does so few other things. Even now, it’s hard to see Howard getting dealt where the other team picks up almost eight figures

10:18
Comment From TF Fredrik
Keep hearing how an international draft is inevitable at some point…What would a rough outline of an international draft look like? Would South Americans and I guess all foreigners for that matter, now have to wait until the same age as U.S. players to be eligible?

10:18
Jeff Sullivan: Good question for Kiley!

10:19
Comment From Grand Admiral Braun
Would the Cubs be better off with Russell at SS and Baez at 2B instead of the current MI?

10:19
Jeff Sullivan: No, I don’t think Javier Baez is better right now than Starlin Castro

10:19
Comment From bpqa
How quickly do the pitch f/x data update on the player pages? Same night? Next day?

10:19
Jeff Sullivan: Next day, I believe. With the BIS stuff, that takes an extra day

10:20
Comment From Ryan
R. Soriano to the Cubs is the big rumor floating around the blog-o-sphere at the moment… do you think it happens? Makes sense for the Cubs if the money is available.

10:20
Jeff Sullivan: I know the Marlins didn’t want to pay Soriano what he was looking for, but then, the Cubs don’t have the same spending habits as the Marlins

10:22
Jeff Sullivan: The Cubs know enough to understand Soriano doesn’t have a lot left in the tank. They also know, though, that midseason trades for relievers are particularly expensive, so I think they would prefer to spend money instead of players

10:22
Comment From Luke S
Would you rather have Rick Porcello or Clay Bucholz starting at the top of your rotation?

10:23
Jeff Sullivan: I think Porcello by a hair, but it’s close

10:23
Jeff Sullivan: as implied by “a hair”

10:24
Comment From Horacio
In light of his walk off Home run last night and with Alex Avilas health concerns and impending Free Agency do you think James McCann is the Tigers future at backstop?

10:24
Jeff Sullivan: Probably not the long-term future, but I could see McCann playing pretty often during the Tigers’ coming transition phase, if that ever arrives

10:26
Comment From Tim
FG calling out the pitcher a bush league move?

10:27
Jeff Sullivan: Yeah, I never quite understand this. Why invite that sort of criticism? Why open the door for someone to do the same thing to your team later on? But, for right now, no one has done the same thing to the Braves, and the Braves did get to kick out a good reliever in a big spot, so in that way you understand how this is a tool to have at your disposal

10:27
Jeff Sullivan: The argument is that it’s pointless, because another team will just get the Braves back. But if that doesn’t happen — if this just blows over — then the Braves got a tiny little advantage, and all it cost them was a day of mildly bad PR

10:28
Comment From Jacob W
Should we be worried about Julio Teheran’s velo drop last night? Seemed to get good results despite it.

10:29
Jeff Sullivan: Whenever someone loses two ticks, it’s troubling. One start isn’t enough to raise alarm, but it’s enough to make this worth following. But, encouraging, the last time Teheran threw this slow, he came back the next start up 3-4 miles

10:30
Jeff Sullivan: So potentially just a blip. The secondary pitches were all normal — only the fastballs were down

10:30
Comment From Aaron
Will we see another player as good as Barry Bonds in our lifetime?

10:31
Jeff Sullivan: I doubt we’ll see anyone quite like peak-level Barry Bonds. That was the ultimate anomaly as can be gleaned just from the intentional walks

10:31
Comment From MagicHat
Concussions and aging curves: same as other injuries, worse, don’t figure into it at all, totally unique to the player.

10:32
Jeff Sullivan: Gotta go with unique but overall it’s poorly understood. You’d assume concussions would make things a little worse, relative to ordinary other injuries, but I can’t declare that to be fact

10:32
Comment From Justin
What sort of container does Bumgarner keep Kershaw’s soul in? A decorative tin? An artisanal carved wooden box? Some sort of glass vial?

10:32
Jeff Sullivan: mason jar

10:32
Comment From _David_
Article idea: 5 best Nelson Cruz plays defense GIFs.

10:33
Jeff Sullivan: no way am I subjecting myself to that video

10:33
Comment From QUESTION FOR JEFF
Why has Yelich been so dang terrible this season?

10:34
Jeff Sullivan: I assume this is in some way connected to his back injury. He’s too good, otherwise. Might just be trying to find his normal swing again

10:34
Comment From Padres
Thing Myers wrist injury lingers ROS and messes up his turnaround

10:34
Jeff Sullivan: Hopefully they acted quickly enough to keep him from developing bad swing habits playing through this

10:35
Comment From Aaron
Ty Cobb played CF, but has a negative positional adjustment. Why is this?

10:35
Jeff Sullivan: Looks like we just have him down as a regular outfielder, with no specific position

10:36
Jeff Sullivan: So then it looks like the adjustment splits the middle between CF and a corner. I don’t know why this is the case, but maybe it’s just how things are for data that old

10:37
Comment From Andrew
Are we sure the 2015 Red Sox are actually good? They have the worst run differential in the AL at this point. Their record over the last two years is the same as the Phillies. I could go on, but no need to be cruel[er].

10:37
Jeff Sullivan: I think we’re decreasingly sure they’re good. I’m still sure they’re better than this, and I’m also still pretty confident they’re set up better than most other teams for the next handful of years

10:37
Comment From padres power
Hi Jeff,in your opinion is the padres hunter renfroe still considered a top prospect?

10:38
Jeff Sullivan: he was a lower-half-of-the-top-100 guy before these struggles. Now he’s up to 400 Double-A plate appearances without hitting. He’s not a top prospect. He’s a hit-or-miss prospect with decent upside if he makes a volatile package work

10:38
Comment From George
Angels offense has been so bad that the fans actually want Ryan Howard and Ben Revere. Tell them this is awful

10:38
Jeff Sullivan: good heavens

10:39
Comment From Happy Fun Ball
So that article you wrote about how the Nats were no longer division favorites? That turned around completely in only three weeks. In related news, Bryce Harper is an alien sent from the future to destroy baseballs.

10:39
Jeff Sullivan: And the White Sox are also back in the race. The gambler’s fallacy is a fallacy, but I totally get why people believe it sometimes

10:40
Comment From _David_
Is it just a fluke that Roenis Elias has pitched better in MLB than MiLB for the second straight year?

10:41
Jeff Sullivan: Well, last year, I think he was about the same. But this year is promising. Barely pitched in Triple-A, really, and the better catcher is in the bigs, so if you have to choose, choose to believe in the big-league performance

10:41
Comment From MSW
Is there any way the Mets can justify Gee over Syndergaard when he gets back?

10:41
Jeff Sullivan: No, but maybe they could justify him over Niese

10:42
Comment From Question
The Royals the best team in the AL?

10:43
Jeff Sullivan: I don’t think so. Not by themselves. But I do think there’s basically just a clump of decent teams with no one really distinguishing themselves

10:43
Jeff Sullivan: No single strong team this year in the AL. Two or three of them in the NL. We’ll see how the balance of power shifts when the Reds get trading

10:43
Comment From Trainman
When the Mariners get Austin Jackson back, who’s the odd man out? Is it a bench guy like Bloomquist or could it be a guy like Ackley? Seems like they are committed to making Brad Miller a super utility guy with him playing both LF and RF yesterday, plus it seems his bat is coming around.

10:44
Jeff Sullivan: The easy thing would be to make up an injury for Bloomquist. I don’t think Ackley gets what’s coming to him until the offseason. But if they did up and dump him, it wouldn’t be a complete shock

10:44
Comment From mtsw
How deep into a season do we need to get before team WRC+ is a good reflection of the quality of their offense?

10:45
Jeff Sullivan: at least halfway? but you always have to keep the previous numbers in mind no matter what

10:45
Jeff Sullivan: the projections never stop mattering, in other words

10:46
Comment From Josh G
Ryan Braun said that his plate discipline skill erosion was attributed to bad habits he picked up to help compensate for his thumb injury. He saiid he’s slowly shedding those habits now that he’s healthy and he has looked like a different hitter recently. You buy that he could return to his former self?

10:46
Jeff Sullivan: Well, if Ryan Braun said it

10:47
Jeff Sullivan: I’m kidding, that’s snarky. I definitely buy the explanation. I don’t think Braun is going to get back to posting 170 wRC+ marks, but, for him to be an excellent hitter again? Yeah, I’m game. Elite talent is elite talent

10:47
Comment From mtsw
From a Park Factors standpoint is Coors still Coors if its wet/cold/rainy like forecast for tonight?

10:47
Jeff Sullivan: Still sucks. Probably extra-sucks

10:47
Comment From Ajay
Based on what we’ve seen so far, is 4 years/$11 million well under market value for Jung-ho Kang?

10:48
Jeff Sullivan: Yeah, this was an obvious opportunity for the Pirates to strike in an over-cautious market. Other teams didn’t want to be the first to give a chance to a hitter from the KBO. Didn’t believe in him. Same skeptical stuff got said about Ichiro when he first came over. Kang works. The skills work

10:49
Comment From Horacio
Does Sean Dolittle walk straight into the closers role when he comes back

10:49
Jeff Sullivan: Probably not immediate, but he’ll get back there after a few lower-leverage appearances

10:49
Jeff Sullivan: On the other hand, if this year’s A’s have a new closer, would anyone notice?

10:49
Comment From dooz
how long until Brad Miller is full time SS again?

10:50
Jeff Sullivan: I think they’re committed to this, now. Don’t want to reverse a position switch on the fly. If Chris Taylor just can’t hack it, expect to see some Ketel Marte

10:50
Jeff Sullivan: Or a wild and crazy trade for Tulo!

10:50
Comment From Phil
What’s your take on Harper being thrown out from yet another game? Are the umps being too quick with the trigger?

10:51
Jeff Sullivan: I think it sort of fits umpire precedent, but then, I hate umpire precedent. I don’t understand why one should be so liberal with ejections. Ejections are severe! You can discipline without throwing a player out of a game.

10:51
Jeff Sullivan: Harper probably said something that wasn’t so nice. I don’t think that’s grounds for literally ejecting him from his job. That’s stupid.

10:52
Comment From Cletus Kasady
How much hiking have you done in Colorado?

10:52
Jeff Sullivan: Not enough yet! Want to try that via ferrata around Telluride

10:52
Comment From J6
Should we believe in the Rays?

10:53
Jeff Sullivan: They’re as good as any other team in that division. Hard to believe with Cobb and Smyly out, but Archer and Odorizzi are real good. I think they still need another starter, even with Moore returning, but it’s a good unit

10:53
Comment From Dave Sims Most Repulsive Hat
‘Boomstick, Baby!’ is arguably the one of the most irritating home run calls ever conceived.

10:53
Jeff Sullivan: agree

10:54
Comment From Hank
There has been a lot of talk about sticking a fork in Tulo. I realize he’s not putting up the numbers he usually does, but it’s not like this hasn’t happened before. Every player goes through stretches where they just don’t hit. I still think he’s the best hitting SS in the game and he’ll still end up with a .300+ average with 25-30 HR, what do you think?

10:55
Jeff Sullivan: Yeah, he’s still the best shortstop on the planet. Absolutely no reason for him to just up and suck. I’m open to there being something mechanically wrong for some reason, but then he should be able to work through that. The rest of the way, Believe In Tulo(!)

10:55
Jeff Sullivan: That said, you can see why other teams might not be so willing to put together a huge package of prospects. With the slow start and the injury history, you’re not getting the most reliable player here

10:56
Comment From Eric Weinstein
Can you think of a single in-game baseball event that would be more unlikely than a Bartolo Colon inside the park home-run?

10:57
Jeff Sullivan: Maybe a straight Bartolo Colon steal of home, but then, maybe that would be SO unexpected he could get a crazy lead

10:57
Comment From mtsw
Hillary Clinton released her emails just now on the day before Memorial Day weekend, in non-searchable .pdf format. Greatest media troll of all time? She just killed the vacations of every political reporter on Twitter.

10:57
Jeff Sullivan: I’m so glad I don’t write about anything that matters

10:58
Comment From The Boat
Would it ever make sense for a team to start selling early to get ahead in the market? The A’s basically know they’re out of it at this point. Wouldn’t they get more in return for 20 Kazmir starts rather than 10?

10:58
Jeff Sullivan: I think we sort of saw this with Samardzija getting traded at the start of July instead of the end

10:58
Jeff Sullivan: The problem is that other teams aren’t really thinking about trades yet. They’re still working out what they have, and almost the entire front office is committed to preparing for the draft, so trades get less attention. Once the draft is complete, markets develop

10:59
Comment From Jon
Did you say 538’s article on exit velocity of batted balls? The article indicated that they believe FIP is “flawed” because it misses what appears to be a “non-negligible” skill that some pitchers have. Any agreement or disagreement?

10:59
Jeff Sullivan: Of course pitchers differ in their batted-ball control. I have not, however, seen the article

10:59
Jeff Sullivan: I think we know about FIPs limitations. It’s not supposed to be perfect. It’s just supposed to be easy and convenient

11:00
Comment From Timothy
Is J-Hey (and his crazy groundball rate, poor discipline) broken or is this just a slump where everything looks kind of rough?

11:00
Jeff Sullivan: Coming around in May. Way fewer grounders, way better results

11:00
Jeff Sullivan: I was actually going to write about him this past week until I realized he was coming out of it. Three straight slow starts for him, but he’s a good player

11:00
Comment From Kris
So Henderson Alvarez has pitched with a 90% UCL tear for “several years.” What % of current pitchers you think have a UCL tear?

11:01
Jeff Sullivan: A ton of them have UCL damage. Probably all of them have UCL damage. But very few pitch with what Alvarez supposedly has

11:01
Jeff Sullivan: All right, unfortunately I do need to go

11:01
Jeff Sullivan: Apologies for the slow start to this. Next week I’ll wake up on time!

Jeff Sullivan: So thank you everybody for hanging out, and I’m sorry for what I didn’t or couldn’t address. We’ll do it again next week at the same time, and until then, be well and have great days

Jeff made Lookout Landing a thing, but he does not still write there about the Mariners. He does write here, sometimes about the Mariners, but usually not.

Jeff,

Ive seen StatCast mentioned several times as being potentially revolutionary technology. However, I have yet to see much about why this statement is made. In watching MLB Network games and seeing some of the information that it appears to provide such as launch angle, exit velocity on a ball hit, and even # of revolutions on a fastball / breaking ball … however, I do not know the full capabilities of this technology. Asking in all sincerity, what types of information, over time, can this technology expect to provide which will make it ‘revolutionary?’ Will knowing the revolutions on a slider from year to year be able to predict regression more so than a radar gun reading? What are your thoughts on what will (or might be) be gleaned from this technology?
