Job Listing: Major League Team Internship
A Major League team is seeking a full-time intern for the 2013 season with a focus on analytics. The position is a paid internship and runs from the middle of February through the end of November. It requires relocation and candidates must be prepared to work long hours as well as nights and weekends.
The internship will provide exposure to all departments within baseball operations. Responsibilities include overseeing updates to our baseball databases, monitoring the import of data feeds, assisting with general baseball ops related administrative tasks, maintaining databases and spreadsheets, staying current on external research, as well as supporting the department in other ways as directed.
Candidates must be passionate about baseball and be able to communicate effectively in an office environment. A familiarity with current baseball research and analytics is required and experience with Microsoft SQL Server is preferred. Demonstrated analytic skills, experience in statistical analysis software packages and knowledge of a scripting language are all pluses.

Maybe it is just me, but when I am applying for a job, it is nice to know at least loosely where they are going to expect you to go before I even bother applying.
The ‘made for this particular job description’ gmail email address seems pretty legit though.
I googled that email address and the only hits are this thread. Either fangraphs has a serious in with the team/mlb to have sole possession of this info at this time– or someone is pranking us…
FWIW– if it is in upstate NY and a real job and I am free to not pull off long hours and weekends [so long as the outlined duties are completed], I’m certainly interested 🙂
Jokes aside, I will vouch for the fact that this is a real job. We know who the team is.
Any reason why they won’t say which team? There aren’t many people that can just relocate anywhere in the country on a moment’s notice between February and November…
I don’t know their reasons for keeping it secret. Maybe they just didn’t want to be flooded with resumes from locals who thought “ehh, screw it, it’s in my city, why not?” By taking location out of the mix, they’re likely to get a smaller pool of candidates, so perhaps it will make the interview process easier. I don’t know. I’m just speculating.
So instead they’ll just get a flood of emails asking the questions that are nearly always part of the advertised job description

What part of “relocation required” did you not understand? If it is in upstate New York, they’ll simply trade you to another team to force you to relocate. Mystery Team always keeps its word.
Okay so what does it matter are any of you qualified?? And no matter what team to get my foot in the door id sell hlt dogs. And do the job. When you are in the mlb you could be apart of many different organizations seems like a no brainer . And if you have to ask . You wont get the job. According to the MLB website, all internships are in New York.
According to ESPN, all MLB is in New York, or at least the Northeast.
You’d think for free labor they’d tell you where it is located and train you. If you require a specific skill-set then pay for it.

Here’s a tip – if you’re willing to relocate, come to Australia – where you actually earn a decent salary working standard hours, in a position slightly more senior than an ‘intern’.

It was the Blue Jays. I got an interview after sending in my resume but had to withdraw because I accepted an internship with another team before a decision was made.
What club did you accept an internship with? How did you hear about that one?
