Luis Arraez Has Stopped Striking Out

The last time Luis Arraez struck out was August 10, a full month ago. He struck out the day before that as well. As of Tuesday morning, Arraez has played in 42 of the Padres’ 46 games during the second half of the season, and he has struck out exactly twice. No other qualified player has struck out fewer than 15 times since the All-Star break. Please take a moment to think about that. It means that the player with the second-fewest strikeouts has struck out 7 1/2 times more than Arraez. Nearly 75% of qualified players have struck out at least 30 times. Arraez, once again, has done so twice. Here’s what that looks like in a graph. Each bar represents a qualified player and Arraez is the tiny green one all the way to the right. I’ve added a dashed line to give you a sense of how far below everyone else he is.

Arraez currently has 26 strikeouts over the entire season. If he can stay below 30, he would be just the ninth qualified player in this century to accomplish the feat, and the first since Jeff Keppinger did so in 2008. Even if you do count 2020, despite the fact that Arraez has made 340 more plate appearances (and counting) than any player in that season, he currently has fewer strikeouts than all but five of the 142 qualified players. Here’s a chart of the whole 2024 season, just for good measure.

But let’s focus on just the second half again. The Padres had 17 games left to play as of Tuesday morning, when I ran a Stathead search to see which players have had the fewest second-half strikeouts in AL/NL history. Although the first All-Star Game was played in 1933, the data goes back to 1901, and I set a minimum of 180 plate appearances. (With no break, I’m not sure how exactly Stathead divides those first 32 seasons, but we’re more interested in the spirit of the thing anyway.) Including Arraez, 32 players have struck out no more than two times, 67 players have struck out no more than three times, 127 have struck out no more than four times, and 219 have struck out no more than five times. (All the stats I use in this piece are as of Tuesday morning, but before I continue, it’s worth mentioning that Arraez went 3-for-5 and didn’t strike out in Tuesday night’s game against the Mariners.) Arraez has the chance to join a very, very short list. At the top is John Dobbs, who in 1905 became the only player to go without striking out at all in the second half. More importantly, he really knew how to rock a fisherman’s sweater.

Could you look into those eyes – those strong, soulful eyes that have peered into the depths of so many cold and lonesome nights and seen only the haunting shadow of despair – and manage to throw strike three? Nobody could during the second half of the 1905 season.
The other takeaway from the list is just how old the names on it are: Wee Willie Keeler, Nap Lajoie, Tris Speaker, Shoeless Joe Jackson. If Arraez can avoid striking out four more times over the next 17 games, he’ll be just the second player to join this list since 1979. The first player? Tony Gwynn, who in 1993 struck out four times over 208 second-half plate appearances while batting a crisp .400. Right now, Arraez has a career K%+ of 30, meaning that over the course of his career, he has struck out 70% less often than the average player. Our all-time lists show a few players ahead of him, but we don’t show actual strikeout totals for nearly all of those players, so I don’t trust their numbers too much. Of that group, the only number I really trust is Gwynn’s 29. Perhaps you remember some talk-radio screeching from earlier this season, when Arraez got traded to San Diego. Some remarked that Arraez’s ending up a Padre was a fitting tribute to Gwynn, while others took offense at the comparison.
It’s undeniable that Gwynn was a better player. Arraez put up a 131 wRC+ in both 2022 and ’23, the best marks of his career. Gwynn surpassed that mark in eight different seasons, and ended his career with a 132 wRC+. He put up a 126 wRC+ in his age-41 season, while the 27-year-old Arraez has yet to hit his decline phase. Lastly, Arraez has never really had a defensive position, whereas Gwynn was a baserunning threat and a solid defender until knee issues slowed him down. However, I would remind you of the differences in their eras. The other plus stats make an eloquent argument for Arraez as Gwynn’s rightful heir.

You may be surprised to learn that, relative to his era, Arraez is actually better than Gwynn at hitting for average. The biggest difference between the two is that Gwynn was more of a slugger. Just like Gwynn, Arraez is undoubtedly the premier contact hitter of his era. However, contact is much, much harder to come by in this era. We probably shouldn’t be surprised that in order to hit for a comparable average, Arraez has had to sacrifice more power than Gwynn did.
Here’s where things get tricky. You could argue that the root causes behind Arraez’s declining strikeout rate are also the root causes behind the step back in his performance this season. First of all, in each of the past two seasons, his chase rate has made an enormous leap. From 2019 to ’22, his chase rate was steady at a hair above 24%. Last season, it increased to 31.8%, and this season it’s up to 35.6%. In two seasons, Arraez has dropped from the 78th percentile to the 10th. Normally, chasing more would lead to more strikeouts, but Arraez isn’t normal, and his contact rate has gone up enough both inside and outside the strike zone that he’s still making more contact overall. Sports Info Solution has been tracking plate discipline since 2002, and the scatterplot below shows the data for all 3,366 qualified player seasons since.

Those two dots in the red circle represent Arraez in 2023 and ’24. Just six other players have ever made that much contact, and no one has done so while chasing anywhere near as often. As a result, Arraez is on pace to put the ball in play 616 times, the most since Statcast started tracking batted ball events in 2015, and his walk rate has fallen even more dramatically than his strikeout rate.
That’s not all. Because more of the balls he puts into play are coming on pitches that are outside the strike zone, he’s not hitting the ball as hard as he used to. Last year, a .362 BABIP masked the difference, but this year he’s at .325. It’s not hard to see why. When he swings at pitches in the zone, his exit velocity is 88.8 mph. On pitches outside the zone, it’s 80.9, nearly 8 mph lower. As a result, Arraez’s .332 xwOBA is the lowest of his career. Striking out less is great, but if you walk less too and produce less on balls in play, it doesn’t matter much. I have no idea whether the Marlins or the Padres have tried to get Arraez to be a bit more selective. His talent for squaring up the ball makes him such an outlier; I wouldn’t be shocked to hear that they just let him do his thing because they don’t want to get in his head and mess up his one weird trick.
However, Arraez hasn’t just stopped striking out. Even though his chase rate has increased from 34.6% in the first half to 37.8%, he’s finally hitting enough to turn his season around. He’s running a 119 wRC+ in the second half, lifting his season mark from 104 to 109. This will almost certainly be the third straight season in which Arraez runs baseball’s lowest strikeout rate, and it will very probably give him his third straight batting title. Also, he’s struck out looking just twice all season. So far, 34 different players have struck out looking at least three times in one game.
Let’s end by looking at one of Arraez’s two second-half strikeouts. Both came against the Marlins, with whom Arraez started the season and who therefore probably had a pretty good scouting report against him. I’m going to show you the August 9 strikeout, because it’s a doozy. It came in the top of the eighth inning against George Soriano. Home plate umpire Scott Barry had a high strike zone all game, and it seems like Soriano was aware of it. Here’s strike one:
That’s a four-seamer that catches the very, very corner of the zone up and away. It’s a borderline strike, and when the pitcher gets the call, there’s not much you can do but tip your cap. Here’s the second pitch:
That’s no longer borderline. That’s a slider, and according to both Statcast and the on-screen strike zone it missed high. How often do pitchers miss above the zone with a breaking ball and earn a called strike? Not often. As you can see, Arraez is not particularly happy about ending up in the hole 0-2 thanks to a borderline call followed by a blown call. At this point, he almost certainly feels like he has to swing at anything, because there’s absolutely no reason to trust the umpire’s strike zone. Here’s strike three:
That’s a check swing on a perfectly executed back foot slider. Personally, I would argue that Arraez didn’t go, but it’s a close call either way.
Just to recap, we’ve got a borderline strike on the corner, a missed call above the zone, and a borderline checked swing. That’s a hard luck strikeout if ever there was one. Arraez would strike out once more the next day, then decide that he was done with such things, possibly forever.

I wonder where Arraez’s .318 BA would rank on the modern era all time list of “emptiest batting averages”. He’s almost all singles, not a good baserunning, and a poor defender.

I was trying to include defense and baserunning in the idea. I should have said “least valuable” instead of “emptiest batting average”.
For least valuable seasons batting .318 (by fWAR), the record is Ryan Doumit’s 2008, when he hit 318/357/501 for a 123 wRC+ in 465 PA as a catcher, and got credited with -3.1 WAR because of his -63 framing runs.
That one’s absolutely untouchable until someone finds a way to quantify 2012 David Ortiz’s chicken-eating as worth -6.2 WAR to knock him down from his current 3.1 WAR.
(OK, I think it was the pitchers who were eating chicken, but I did find an article saying that Ortiz and other veterans “were largely detached and failed to show any leadership in the clubhouse” in the chicken-eating season.)
(Also it’s kind of spooky that both Doumit and the first guy I thought of as a scapegoat for bad intangibles both turned out to have exactly the same average as Arraez.)
Wow. -63 framing runs is almost unfathomable.
And yet, the Bucs kept running him out there.
Just look at the strike zone for poor Michael Crotta on this game. I don’t know how to make the results show up as a color, but he threw 21 pitches, three of them were completely in the zone at the bottom and called balls, three were borderline at the bottom and called balls.
Everyone knew Doumit was a bad defensive catcher (I called him Dunkin’ Doumit, because America runs on Dunkin’), but it took the framing research to quantify that it was so bad that a catcher with a 123 wRC+ could be one of the worst players in history.
I’m going to go with Juan Pierre in 2001 who somehow had a .088 ISO playing for the Rockies in the pre-humidor era. That’s the third lowest ISO in the pre-humidor era for the Rockies. But the two guys below him just didn’t hit at all, Pierre had a .327 BA.
He did steal 46 bases though, that’s like getting some doubles right?

Arraez 129 AVG+ to this point in 2024 puts him in a many way tie for 153rd on the top side and 179th on the bottom end.
He also has a 44 BB+ and 45 ISO+ at the moment which combined with that 129 AVG+ gives him a 110 wRC+.
Out of 350 individual seasons with at least a 125 AVG+ only nine others have a wRC+ in the 110’s…

That 2001 Pierre season mentioned by SadTrombone is the highest AVG+ on the list (122) to come in with a below average wRC+ (91), though a couple 2020 Rockies also turned the trick – Blackmon (123 AVG+ | 97 wRC+) and Tapia (130 AVG+ | 96 wRC+).
If we’re looking for a non-Rocky looks like it’s 1953 Don Mueller (122 AVG+ | 99 wRC+), 2019 Hanser Alberto (120 AVG+ | 95 wRC+) or 2014 Ben Revere (119 AVG+ | 93 wRC+).
Ben Revere would have been my first guess; one of the oddest players of the 21st century. Arraez doesn’t have much power, but he hits enough doubles to not be entirely bereft. Revere couldn’t even use his speed to make that stack up. He took until his fourth full season to hit his first home run!

I get the sense that Arraez cares more about not striking out then he does about being productive
Sure we would love it if he’d rip a few homers here and there, but hits keep the line moving, and he gets a lot of them.
This comment reminds me of Wilt’s bizarre obsession with never fouling out.
Or that one season he became fixated on leading the league in assists.
Assists are one thing, but how valuable could holding back from an individual 5th foul possibly be to offset the negative value of missing the rest of the game? Unless it’s in the last minute of a close game or he was being overly cautious before even reaching 4 fouls, I don’t see the problem with that one.
Plenty, since as a Center, Chamberlain’s physicality was paramount to his game. He basically spent every second once he got to 5 fouls trying to flinch away from any contact, which effectively took him out of the game anyway (not only could he not shoot at all, especially on FTs, but the 3PT line didn’t exist when he played in the NBA, so he couldn’t even attempt to try and make up for letting points through without further exposing himself to fouls). Same reason why Hack-a-Shaq has persisted through the modern game, and why guys who flinch from going to the free-throw line end up as the worst players in the NBA (coughBenSimmonscough), just in reverse. Taking players out of their comfort zone can, and sometimes does, completely neutralize them.
You cannot run away from contact, but especially as a big man, and even more so as a defensive anchor.
So he was so bad at that point that at least one of the other team’s centers was an improvement? It seems like his coach should’ve just benched him at that point until he got over it, especially since a foul while attempting a shot almost always goes against the defense and gives you free throws.
Speaking of which, how did it even affect his free throw shooting when it’s impossible for the shooter to make a foul (save for a very rare possibility of a technical foul)?! This is the same guy who once personally scored 100 points in a game, right?
Then why is he chasing more?
He could be pickier and accept more strikeouts to try to turn on some balls, but he is having his worst year and still posting a wRC+ of 110. I would say he is more like a slap hitter in softball and he clearly has to skills to do that task as he is striking out less despite chasing more.
His biggest problem is he is a poor defender.

The way I figure it, there’s multiple ways to have the same productivity. In the opposite extreme you have Joey Gallo, and over their careers, Arraez has the higher wRC+
I agree with this. Is one more sustainable than the other? I don’t really know.
I trust the numbers so no issues with three true outcomes players, but as a fan I would rather watch a guy at least put the ball in play repeatedly IF their value is the same.
I still maintain the comparisons to Tony Gwynn are insulting.
Tony Gwynn’s worst full season in 20 years (1990) is roughly comparable to Arraez this year in wRC+ and twice as good in terms of WAR.
Considering that this is Arraez’s 2nd worst season by wRC+ and worst by WAR (excluding 2020 for the latter condition, because duh), that doesn’t prove your point.
Also, why is it insulting? They do similar things at the plate. That’s the comparison. Gwynn being a better fielder and baserunner makes up the largest part of the gap between the two until later in Gwynn’s career, when he intentionally started trying to hit for more power (mostly doubles, but homers too).

He is walking less this year, too. That dovetails nicely with his increased chase rate, but is it also fair to hypothesize that pitchers are just not very afraid of being badly hurt by him? I assume everybody knows he is swinging at everything and pitchers are just going to try to put it up there kind of close to the zone ans hope for weak contact?
Here is another fascinating thing about him. His walk and K rates have historically risen and fallen together. They have been within 1.2% of each other in all years since 2021. I have no idea what it means but it is interesting to me.
Somewhat curious as to what earned a downvote here. I asked a question and made an observation that seemed interesting to me (maybe it wasn’t).
I found it hard to believe that an article about not striking out didn’t include a mention of Joe Sewell. He was a SS and 3rd baseman in the 20’s and early 30’s and is in the HOF. Playing in almost every game, in his last 9 years he never reached double figures in strike outs including one season in which he made 699 PA’s and fanned 4 times. He played 14 years and struck out 114 times in his career. In 2024 89 players have already struck out 114 times. Truly remarkable.

I followed baseball and was pretty up on the latest publicly available research of advanced metrics 10 or so years ago.
Do we know anything more now than then about ability to maintain elevated BABIP? IIRC, the normal range was somewhere between 0.270 and 0.330. A pretty broad range. Arraez is career 0.340, which would put him t13th for batters with over 5000 PA since 1960. The point being it is pretty high but not otherworldly.
My understanding has always basically been that line drives almost always go for a hit, fly balls are almost always an out unless they are a HR, and grounders are largely luck. So maximizing LD and minimizing FB would be a formula for high BABIP. I don’t think batters can really “aim” a hit, but do we have any proof of an innate or learned skill to simply putting the bat on the ball in a way that it is most likely to serve the ball to a better position in the field?
Certainly this is what announcers talk about a lot, but I have always wondered if it is garbage and just happens to work out sometimes or if there are guys who can maximize BABIP by basically having that as a plan.
There are plenty of fly balls that land for hits inside the park, including hard hit fly balls, not just the soft bloops.
As for grounders, they do depend more on luck, but the harder they are hit, the more likely they will get through the infield for hits (albeit also more likely to become ground ball double plays with a man on first). There’s also skill and speed involved in bunting for hits.
Basically, the best plan is probably a high liner rate, low infield pop up rate, good speed, and otherwise just high exit velocity. How much of that players can actually plan for is up for debate, although for the most part you either have speed or you don’t have it.
I assume having a level swing produces more LD less HR. I would be curious to know the LD rate of “elevate and celebrate” type guys.
Does a slight miss turn into a LD with more or less frequency than a lasy fly?
