RosterResource Excel Workbook Downloads Are Now Available for FanGraphs Members
Historically, we have made many data tables available for download in a comma-separated values (CSV) format text file. Most of our data grids are rather straight forward and can be translated easily into a CSV file to be consumed by your data analysis tool of choice. Starting today, we are making RosterResource Excel workbook downloads available for FanGraphs Members. You can find the download button to the right of the page underneath the RosterResource navigation.
RosterResource tables presented an interesting challenge, because the tables are not always uniform on a given page. For this reason, we decided to use Excel workbooks to facilitate data downloads. This way you will be able to ingest the data with the correct data headers. Each table will have its own worksheet, so if you download the Padres’ Depth Chart page, you’ll have a separate sheet for the starting lineup, bench, starting rotation, bullpen, etc. To keep everything consistent, all separate tables have their own separate sheets regardless of how similar they might be to other sheets.
A few notes:
- We have included FanGraphs player ids in the download files.
- Most downloads are clones of the data grids visible on the RosterResource tool, not the raw data behind the tools.
- The ancillary data (Latest Roster Moves, Schedule, etc.) at the top of the Depth Charts page is not included.
- There is only one workbook downloaded per page. We aren’t packaging different tools or teams together.
- Formatting could be lost from website to Excel worksheet, especially cell color.

The download that I would really, really love, enough to pay extra for, is a sheet mapping MLBAM IDs and fangraphs IDs. Or any one that has fangraphs IDs and birth dates.
1000 times this. Thanks for suggesting! I’d also settle for static permanent Fangraphs IDs that don’t change whenever a player reaches the majors, so that I don’t have to update any data based on The BOARD! every few weeks or so (or to this new feature, come to think of it). Even the Baseball Databank doesn’t have a full set of IDs, which silos Fangraphs off from Baseball Savant, Retrosheet, etc. This is obviously a great site that puts an immense amount of time and care into data display and interoperability, so I think this has a lot more to do with available resources and prioritization than neglect, but I think some attention to quality of life changes in this area would help immensely.
I always figured everyone just used the old lahman database ids. It’s been along time since I’ve SQLed my way through the raw data.

Hooray. I used to pay for this when RR was a separate entity, but then I switched to paying for a FG subscription.
One thing has always troubled me though – why isn’t there a “Go-To Starting Lineup vs LHP” like there is “Go-To Starting Lineup vs RHP”???
Perhaps a dumb question., but have looked and can’t find the answer. On the Lineup Tracker, what do the “Ovr” and “Last 7” columns signify? Player’s rank for the season and his rank over the past week? Is there an explanation key anywhere? Many thanks!
That’s how I’ve always understood them, but I’ve never seen an explicit confirmation of their meaning.
