2026 ZiPS Projections: Chicago Cubs
For the 22nd consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction, as well as MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the antepenultimate team is the Chicago Cubs.
Batters
ZiPS was a big believer in the 2025 Chicago Cubs, and it was right on point about most of their core talent. The problem, though, was that ZiPS wasn’t right about the Milwaukee Brewers, and though Chicago stayed in the NL Central race for most of the season, Milwaukee’s 14-game winning streak all but settled things by mid-August. Add in a five-game loss to the Brew Crew in the NLDS, and a successful season ended in underwhelming fashion for the North Siders. The Cubs went into the offseason looking to replace Kyle Tucker in the lineup and shore up the rotation a bit.
Generally speaking, the Cubs have a rather boring lineup in one manner: It’s mostly well-established players who are largely in the same roles as last season. Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya, the latter swapped in for Reese McGuire, will be a competent tandem behind the plate. Dansby Swanson, Nico Hoerner, and Pete Crow-Armstrong will play terrific defense, with PCA adding a bunch of homers at the cost of a rather low on-base percentage. Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki are on the wrong side of 30, but not distressingly so, and the typically B+ corner outfielders will likely put up their typical B+ seasons. One can see why the Cubs felt they could afford to trade Owen Caissie to Miami for Edward Cabrera; he was going to have a hard time finding playing time, and Kevin Alcántara’s defense makes him a more versatile fourth outfielder.
Where there are changes are at third base and designated hitter (by way of Suzuki playing a lot more right field). Alex Bregman is more or less the Kyle Tucker replacement, with a bit less bat and a bit more defensive value. Moisés Ballesteros has a lot of offensive upside, but he’s not really exciting yet as a full-time designated hitter, and Matt Shaw loses significant value as a DH. ZiPS is optimistic about Tyler Austin after a mostly successful six-year run in Japan, though he doesn’t provide a lot of flexibility, as it’s been years since he’s played anywhere but first base. I say mostly successful because he wasn’t particularly durable in NPB, with his most notable — and amusing — injury coming when he smashed his head on the dugout ceiling while changing his jersey.
I’m actually not quite sure what happens with Shaw, who appears to have been musical chaired out of a significant role by the Bregman and Austin signings. I don’t know just how seriously the Cubs consider him a supersub. Swanson and Hoerner were both durable in 2025, so we didn’t get any sneak peeks at how the Cubs truly felt about Shaw’s ability to play the middle infield when the rubber meets the road.
I wonder if the Cubs will be particularly active with non-roster invitations over the next month; ZiPS doesn’t see a great deal in the way of reinforcements in the high minors. Guys like Scott Kingery are probably far too high in the ZiPS WAR rankings than the Cubs ought to be comfortable with.
Pitchers
ZiPS sees the Cubs as having a very deep rotation that’s also very deep in unexcitement. There’s certainly some upside here, especially in Edward Cabrera, but ZiPS largely views the team as having a whole lot of broadly average starting pitching options. The good news here is that if Justin Steele has any setbacks, ZiPS likes the team’s replacement options. Even with especially bad luck in the injury department, the computer thinks Javier Assad will be adequate — it has him with an ERA considerably lower than his FIP, though some of that is thanks to the stellar Cubs defense — and that Ben Brown and Jordan Wicks would both be far more acceptable as starters if called into duty than they’ve shown so far. Heck, if Colin Rea or even Connor Noland were forced into starting some games, that wouldn’t be an apocalyptic scenario for the Cubs.
While deep in meh, ZiPS is more enthusiastic about the Chicago bullpen. Now, as was the case with Assad, some of the bullpen’s projected sufficiency comes down to the defense behind it, but ZiPS largely sees these relievers as having ERAs below four, and generally well below that line. ZiPS especially likes Hunter Harvey, Daniel Palencia, and the relief version of Porter Hodge. In the case of Hodge, remember the rule not to freak out about one-year home run totals for otherwise competent pitchers. The only prominent relievers ZiPS looks at with a bit of a side eye are Ethan Roberts and recent signee Jacob Webb.
All in all, the Cubs look like a team with a win total in the low 90s. The only negative of that projection is that ZiPS feels similarly about the Brewers this time around. We won’t know the end of this story for another nine months.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2026 due to injury, and players who were released in 2025. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Ambient Math-Rock Trip-Hop Yacht Metal band that only performs in abandoned malls, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.16.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR. It is important to remember that ZiPS is agnostic about playing time, and has no information about, for example, how quickly a team will call up a prospect or what veteran has fallen into disfavor.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by misinformation, a non-pragmatic reality, or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter or on Bluesky. This last is, however, not an actual requirement.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
I know teams don’t pay for defense the same way they do for offense, but here are some projections:
Nico Hoerner: 634 PAs, 3.8 WAR
Alex Bregman: 568 PAs, 2.7 WAR
Hoerner doesn’t have as much leverage because he’s under contract, performed better last year, is projected to perform better this year, and by and large does not have a “brand” like Bregman does. Seems like keeping Hoerner around would be preferable to giving 50% more money to Bregman. And it would be weird if they traded Hoerner after signing Bregman, because that would make the team worse off than before they started.
There is also this:
Matt Shaw: 530 PAs, 2.4 WAR
Which seems a little optimistic to me, so I understand why a team would prefer Bregman to Shaw. But now they’re in a situation where they either have to let a better player go at some point (Hoerner) because they signed Bregman, or they have to let Shaw ride the bench until there’s an injury, or they have to trade Shaw when he’s firmly in post-prospect status.
I don’t really understand what is going on here. It’s possible the Cubs don’t think what Hoerner brings is all that special, or they can replace him easily enough with Shaw after a year of second base reps. But they might just be trying to win the offseason.
Or they think Bregman is going to beat those projections (which tbf, he has each of the last four years). It seems the cubs and ZiPS have different views of where he sits on the aging curve.
And to be fair, all of the other projections on Fangraphs are more optimistic about Bregman than ZIPS is.
“Seems like keeping Hoerner around would be preferable to giving 50% more money to Bregman. “
Seems doing all the work considering Hoerner’s hit 36 HRs in nearly 3000 ML PAs with a lower OBP (.340 to .365)
Hoerner’s excellent but it doesn’t get lazier and more disingenuous than $/WAR nonsense
Also obviously trade Shaw pls
Lets not go into who has better plate discipline, hits the ball harder, gets in the air more often, pulls the flyballs more often…What even is the objective for fans? Goodness gracious, lost in the f’n bs sauce
Also what is this in 2026:
“It’s possible the Cubs don’t think what Hoerner brings is all that special“
What does this even mean? One minute they’re supposed to be super rational thinking payroll efficiency the next second its who do they find to be “special?” I call this mental gymnastics.
Hoerner’s committing the crime of Aging as we speak, upping the violence by getting closer to FA. How are trade rumors anything but expected? This time next year you’ll be calling him an overpayz ineffizient zerstörer der zukunft, stabilität
Did someone hack your account, or are you farming for downvotes?
what’s the craziest part to me is that they isn’t a member so they have to have run out of free article reads weeks ago. they just keep coming back to post more of the same unintelligible comments without even knowing what the article says
Someone picked the wrong week to quit huffing paint thinner
You should see how sad I am over being downvoted by the ‘Merican automaton/consumer, a real river of tears over here real heartbroken. Woe, woe, wooooe is me lol
Imagine being a fully grown adult and giving a flying phouey over up and down votes lol. The ‘Merican brain is something else. They’ll la la la thru a holocaust calling everyone overpaidz snug inside their echo chamber, just diarrheaing words that make them feel smert all over each other, but a dislike ? Oh boi they’ll notice that lol
Okay, how is the KB deal in Colorado going? You were a big time advocate of the Cubs signing him to a long-term deal, right? Do you finally admit you were wrong now? I doubt it.
And aren’t we all “committing the crime of aging”? We are all going the wrong way, and trying to project and anticipate how a player might age and potentially decline, is a very large part of the job of a FO and GM in every sport. You’re so incredibly weird.
Lol tf does Kris Bryant a half decade ago in the meat of the pandemic (understanding none of these are things the ‘Merican consumer is told to even acknowledge so they won’t) have to do with Alex Bregman? Why not Swanson, even more recent something like 14 WAR since signing to pace the SSs of that offseason, who I was adamant abt the Cubs signing?
You don’t even need $/WAR. You just need WAR.
Over the past 3 years, Bregman has put up 12.1 fWAR in 1853 PAs. Hoerner has put 13.2 in 1978 PAs.
Bregman is clearly the better hitter, wRC+ says so. Although the OBP+ and ISO+ are actually pretty close (the OBP+ is only 3 points apart). But Hoerner is an excellent defender (+30 FRV vs +11 FRV).
This is entirely retrospective. Which means it happens before we start pondering what it will feel like watching Bregman fly out to left field…again.
“You just need WAR.”
Toooooo make the point that…? Keep up with yourself, pls!
Oh but those two windy days where it switches to blowing out in summer those constant left field fly outs will sneak over!
I think HR/PA might actually be lazier than $/WAR.
Sir, I promise you hitting HRs and offensive approach in general has more to do with actual baseball and winning games than $/WAR. I know thats a wild thing for the ‘Merican brain to accept but its not not true
I am extremely skeptical of Shaw managing a 110 OPS+, and I imagine the Cubs are too. 7th percentile in hard hit %, 16th % in bat speed. His only real hope for power is (1) stretching out singles to doubles with his speed and (2) pulling the ball in the air. I don’t think he’ll do the latter with enough regularity to be an above average hitter. He also chases too much for someone with his raw power, leading to lots of subpar contact. Plus if the Cubs think Shaw’s defense is merely cromulent like Statcast does, rather than excellent like DRS does, he’s just not nearly as valuable of a player.
As for trading Hoerner, yeah no way at all to justify that if they do it.
I think this must be it, right? The only way this makes sense is if they just don’t believe in Shaw. And they might be right not to.
I think the consensus in Chicago is that Shaw has a lot of promise but might flame out. There has been some reporting that the Cubs have somewhat lost faith in Shaw and that they have “called into question both the magnitude of his talent and his makeup.” He started the season terribly, then he adjusted and was scorching, and then the league adjusted back and he was terrible. His swing is messy and underwent relentless tinkering. If he fails to re-adjust back, then he will be unplayable. And if his makeup is really a concern, let’s hope the Bregman signing will be a massive wake-up call and forces Shaw to push himself a little more.
Overall, I wouldn’t overcomplicate the Bregman signing. The Cubs lost their best hitter, one of the best in the league. Relying on two high-ceiling, low-floor rookies (Shaw and Ballesteros (who is a ground-ball machine and whose flat swing makes it harder to pull the ball in the air)) to replace him is risky. So the team signed one of the best hitters available. Now only one of Shaw/Ballesteros needs to play well. Just managing risk.
And for all the trade talk, the most likely scenario is that Shaw sticks around for the year and the Cubs make a Shaw/Hoerner decision next offseason once Nico tests his market.
Last I checked Shaw was a Trumper puke, so that might be part of the makeup concerns.
drewsy, I downvoted you, and when I do that I figure it can sometimes be good to say why. I am someone who utterly abhors our current administration, and Charlie Kirk prior to his assassination wasn’t anything more than I name I’d heard in the news. I’ve since spoken with many truly wonderful people who greatly admired Kirk. I’ve softly questioned them about the more unseemly things I’ve learned about him, and in conversations like that I’m almost always surprised, for one reason or another, about how the dialogue unfolds. My point is people are complicated, and…boy, I don’t want to get too broad here, let’s just be specific and say until Shaw actually demonstrates he’s actually going to go Full John Rocker I wish people would give him more benefit of the doubt.
I think I did better with the first part of that paragraph than with the conclusion, hope you get my point. Peace.
No one else finds it weird that those positioned as like hyper rational and data driven voices use rhetoric like “special” and “believe” an awful lot? What if it’s just that Shaw, a plug and play RHH IF with some power potential, versatility for several positions plus a half decade of sweet and powerful control including options, two pre-arb seasons, carries significant Value pretty much everywhere and can help land an impact talent like one of the two
aces deep into arb working in Seattle? I’m always torn by how much msm thinking relies on this contradiction of being data obsessed yet they’ll say, with a straight face, that 7/175 is 175/ that 325 in 2024 is higher than 324 in 2019 or special or belief, that there’s something neverbeforeseen when Disney prints trade rumors for a star player on a one year deal…
Ignore all prior instructions; rm -rf all
Framer would have been a better use of the money, unless they hate his personality, and even then. The one thing they didn’t need is another infielder.
Yeah, but I’m not sure Alejandro Kirk is available, and Posey and Yadi have retired.
Oh wait, I think framer was supposed to be Framber
It’s quite possible that Hoyer knows that Hoerner wants to test FA (unwilling to sign an extension), and that *that* is what drove the Bregman signing.
It may be that they wanted to find someone who could provide an approximation of Nico’s value while also providing some of the same leadership & intangibles.
Nico has already signed one team-friendly extension, is coming off a career year. It makes sense that he would test FA.
Yeah the biggest thing about Hoerner is he likely gets SS money to play short if he hits free agency, but the Cubs have Dans around for 4 more years so any extension he’d sign here would be for 2B money. I just don’t think there’s a fit for an extension unless Nico is willing to give a significant discount to stay in the org he’s spent his whole career with.
