2026 ZiPS Projections: Philadelphia Phillies
For the 22nd consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction, as well as MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the first team up is the Philadelphia Phillies.
Batters
The Phillies offense kept right on rolling for another season, once again scoring nearly 800 runs, and finishing with a wRC+ of 109, the team’s best total during this era. As expected, Philadelphia’s rotation was terrific, but the offense contributed more than its fair share to the team’s 96 wins, the second most in baseball.
There are worries lurking on the horizon, however. Trea Turner had what was certainly his best season in Philadelphia, but he’s entering his mid-30s, a very dangerous time for a middle infielder. I was actually surprised to see the drop-off in the ZiPS projection for Turner, but noticed that Steamer was basically projecting the same thing. Also entering his mid-30s is Bryce Harper, who has solidified his chances of a plaque in Cooperstown, but appears to now be off his peak years. Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto are free agents, and I think both stand a real chance of returning to Philadelphia, though both are also entering the likely decline phases of their careers; indeed, Realmuto probably already has.
That doesn’t mean the Phillies are doomed if they’re content to just put the band back together, but realistically, they’re going to need a lot of work around the edges. ZiPS is decently optimistic about what Justin Crawford could do in a full season, but the projections would really like to see a more convincing answer in left field and a far better situation in right. The rotation means that the team doesn’t need to have an all-world offense to make the playoffs or even win the NL East, of course.
Outside of Crawford and Aidan Miller, ZiPS is thoroughly unimpressed with the in-house options coming up in the next year or two. If the Phillies can bring back their veterans or suitably replace them, and deal with right field, this could be a very good offense again, though probably one with a ceiling just below the game’s elites.
Pitchers
The Phillies rotation was expected to dominate in 2025, and that’s just what it did. Even with a disaster of a year from Aaron Nola and the late-season loss of Zack Wheeler to thoracic outlet syndrome, the starters basically lapped the rest of the league, finishing with a more than 5-WAR edge over the next best team, the Cincinnati Reds. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some serious concerns going forward. Wheeler’s thoracic outlet syndrome isn’t the type that ended Stephen Strasburg’s career, and the team is, by all accounts, at least cautiously optimistic about his recovery. But you still have to consider him riskier than you would have this time last year. ZiPS projects somewhat of a bounce-back for Nola, but that’s not a guarantee, and Ranger Suárez is a free agent.
On the plus side, Cristopher Sánchez is signed through 2030 (with club options) and basically just stuffed a breakout season on top of his first breakout season, while Jesús Luzardo has made good on his potential from back when he was an elite Oakland A’s prospect. But ZiPS still isn’t quite sure what to think about Andrew Painter, and is unfortunately quite sure what to think of Taijuan Walker. A bit more depth here might be helpful, though the Phillies probably don’t need to go crazy given their other needs.
Speaking of, I fully expect Philadelphia to add a few relief arms this offseason. It’s one of the easier things to read from the projections: ZiPS loves the front five of Jhoan Duran, José Alvarado, Matt Strahm, Orion Kerkering, and Tanner Banks, but then… the void beckons. Still, it won’t take a ton of work to make this an elite bullpen.
As this is the first ZiPS writeup of the offseason, any team projection here is more “where the Phillies are now” than “where the Phillies will be in April 2026.” If the Phillies just rolled with everyone they currently have under contract, they’d probably land somewhere between 82-87 wins and be in contention for a Wild Card. I’d be absolutely shocked if they didn’t do a lot better than that, though, and expect that they’ll again enter the season with a win projection somewhere in the low 90s. I think the Phils will be a good team in 2026, but they are probably starting to run short of chances to win the World Series with their current core.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2026 due to injury, and players who were released in 2025. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Ambient Math-Rock Trip-Hop Yacht Metal band that only performs in abandoned malls, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.16.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR. It is important to remember that ZiPS is agnostic about playing time, and has no information about, for example, how quickly a team will call up a prospect or what veteran has fallen into disfavor.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by misinformation, a non-pragmatic reality, or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter or on BlueSky. This last is, however, not an actual requirement.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
Not sure if it’s typographical errors or ZiPS, but the hitters PA seem kinda off.
Multiple guys projected for 150+ more PA than AB (with nowhere near the amount of walks to make up difference) and Kyle schwarber is projected to break Jimmy Rollins PA record by 70+.
I know it’s the least reliable, most sideshow part of the endeavor, but my oh my those Cris Sanchez comps.
Luzardo’s and Duran’s aren’t bad either
And Ranger Suarez! ZANE SMITH MENTIONED
wOBA also seems to be off
I will check into this!
This should be fixed now. I changed a few columns in one of my files and the template was pulling from the wrong columns in a few places still.
The 2026 introduction linked in the first paragraph details why, but ZiPS is explicitly stated in that intro to not predict playing time by design. He goes by FanGraphs Depth Charts on that side of things.
Oh, he’s referring to an error in the PA reporting in the first table.
I like that all of Wheeler’s comps are guys born well over 100 years ago.
He’s a throwback to when pitchers routinely threw 30 CG annually
Really? I look at this skeptically because it feels like irrelevant information for the purpose of forecasting.
Yay!
This is still a really good team. Schwarber comps say he’s a bargain at the projected price.
We should keep an eye on Aiden Miller’s son.
Even some pretty low projection guys have impressive comps.
Schwarber has a curious set of comps.
The #1 comp (Pena) had a solid season at age 33 and then fell off a cliff.
The #2 and #3 comps (Thome) were productive players until age 40.
Now that ZiPS projections are back, the offseason truly begins…
Infield looks great. The outfield looks…interesting.
They really do seem like the most obvious landing spot for Harrison Bader. He performed *very* well for them and so they’re probably the team most likely to overlook the x-stats, and they desperately need a center fielder.
Might be a dark horse contender for Bellinger if the Yankees and / or Boras decide to drag things out but I think they are out on Tucker.
I think they’ll ultimately get tucker. Dodgers/Cubs/Yankees don’t seem too interested. Think it will ultimately come down to phillies and jays. Bader is just eh, last years batted ball profile just suggests he had crazy luck last year
I don’t think the Phillies pay out for both Schwarber and Tucker, and I think Schwarber is heading back. But they definitely are not afraid of very long deals. If Tucker is fine stretching out $300M over 12 or 13 years it could work out.
I think they really want a right handed bat though, right now it’s seriously only Trea Turner, Edmundo Sosa, Alec Bohm, and Nick Castellanos and Castellanos might get cut. Bader is one of the only right handed outfielders available.
I feel like there’s a group of relievers that every big money contender is going to be in on: Suarez, Williams, Iglesias, and Fairbanks. Suarez and Williams will probably go somewhere that views them as a closer / doesn’t have a set closer (LAD, Giants, Mets if Diaz goes elsewhere) but the Phillies seem like an obvious suitor for Fairbanks and maybe Iglesias.
Fairbanks had Reynauld’s so he can’t really pitch effectively in cold weather. Somewhere warm or in a dome makes more sense.
It looks like some of the tables are improperly constrained to screen width on mobile and thus not legible
Seconded. It’s not a big deal because I was able to I turn my screen sideways to landscape mode, but still worth mentioning.
Unfortunately, this I’m not sure what to do about it, other than make even more tables and spread stuff out
Personally? I’m banging the table for more and bigger tables.
Schwarber has a really good projection and some comps who aged very well in Thome and Ortiz. What are his chances of reaching 500 homers according to ZiPs?
The Cristopher Sanchez extension is by far the best thing to happen to the Phillies organization since I don’t even know when. If some of their prospects pan out, that contract could extend this team’s competitive window by several years.
It’s such a relief for them that they’re finally moving on from Castellanos, who has been the human definition of “sunk cost fallacy” for the past two seasons. Whoever gets time in RF really can hardly be much worse. I’m guessing they’ll sign a serious FA for at least one of CF or RF (obviously Tucker or Bellinger would be a huge deal, but Grisham, Yastrzemski or Bader would work too), and give Crawford a shot in LF.
They’re obviously running a bit thin on time, but the Phillies should be the easy NL East favorites next year (though I have no idea how much the Mets are gonna do this offseason, so hard to say at this juncture).
I’d say best thing since the first Wheeler signing. I don’t think anyone involved at the time thought they were signing the best pitcher in baseball over the length of the contract.
I would probably put the Cristopher Sanchez trade ahead of the extension itself although the extension was a phenomenal outcome for the Phillies organization.
There was a brief period of time where people were rushing to congratulate the Rays for trading a 22-year old pitcher in High-A and who was Rule 5 eligible for one of the best prospects in baseball. “Never trade with the Rays!*” they said. Yeah, about that.
*except if you can get Christopher Sanchez, Blake Snell, Joe Ryan, Jake Cronenworth, maybe also Isaac Paredes or Randy Arozarena or Jason Adam…
“Great trade by the Rays who’d they get?” I think that was a Sam Miller joke.
or Trea Turner
That’s probably the all-time worst trade in Rays history, although I try not to bring that one up because Andrew Friedman pulled the trigger on that and not Neander.
I remember how panned the Meed for Sanchez trade was at the time. It is just an example of how even the Rays make bad trades at times , well this and the Joe Ryan trade. While Dombrowski didn’t make that trade the extension he gave Sanchez was a stroke of genius.
Since Neander took over he’s won bigger than he lost, but it’s mostly that the Arozarena deal came only a year or two after the Glasnow deal. Both of which were big wins for the Rays but which looked even more lopsided within about a year after making them. That’s where their reputation came from.
How does the DEF 0 work with a DH like Schwarber? Especially in the context of Realmuto getting a DEF -2.
It’s relative to position. Realmuto is -2 relative to other catchers and Schwarber is no different defensively from other DHs (which makes sense). I don’t know exactly how ZiPS does position adjustments but rest assured that, all else equal, catchers will be projected as more valuable than DHs
Wow, those comps for Andrew Painter are *barf emoji*
I think this Castellanos projection throws cold water on the hopes of those who think the Phillies can eat 50-60% of the contract and get some team to bite. The projection isn’t fact, but it probably accurately reflects how he’s valued by other teams.
Who thinks that? No one I’ve seen. Clear to everyone they’d have to eat $15 million to even get a blah prospect. Best bet is they just dump him.
Sunk cost. With no defensive value he’s the type of player that would get a non-roster invite. They could either tack a prospect package of some sort on him to get another team to eat the contract or just cut him. I think a roster cut is the most likely outcome.
I think this’ll be the year they trade Bohm just not sure where maybe the Angels?
A 1944 Whit Wyatt -esque showing from Wheeler could be a blessing in disguise – couple outings to warm up (ideally without throwing at guys’ heads for bounties like Whit) and take the postseason mound fresh-armed.
