2026 ZiPS Projections: Seattle Mariners
For the 22nd consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction, as well as MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Seattle Mariners.
Batters
The Mariners have had some pretty awesome teams throughout their history, but the World Series has eluded them. Prior to this year, the team had topped out with six-game ALCS exits in 1995 and 2000, and while they missed the Fall Classic again in 2025, they at least set a new high water mark, with a bad seventh inning in Game 7 of their Championship Series against Toronto all that stood between them and a date with the Dodgers. Seattle will largely run it back in 2026, with most of the 2025 team returning for another go.
Looking at the offense, there’s surprisingly little to complain about too strenuously here, and I’m a man known for complaining about things I don’t like. Of the team’s three big hitters who reached free agency this winter — Josh Naylor, Eugenio Suárez, and Jorge Polanco — ZiPS believes that Seattle retained the right one. Naylor provides production at first base that the Mariners can’t replace and have needed for a long time; the M’s have gotten less than one combined win out of their first basemen in nine of the last 20 seasons. Remember how long Evan White was the future of the position? Suárez still projects decently at third, but he’s also five years older than Naylor, and ZiPS sees Ben Williamson and Colt Emerson as being fine at the hot corner, provided the defensive projections are accurate. ZiPS thinks Williamson is one of the minors’ elite defensive third basemen, and that doesn’t clash at all with the scouting reports. Getting that defense is absolutely crucial, though, as he is unlikely to develop into a real plus with the bat, and while there’s more upside with Emerson, he was promoted aggressively this year and may need a consolidation season.
Overall, ZiPS really likes Seattle’s collection of infielders in the high minors, which makes me wonder if one of them, most likely Emerson, will be given the reins in 2027 with J.P. Crawford set to hit free agency after the 2026 season. Amusingly, Emerson gets Crawford as one of his top three comps, and I swear that I didn’t put my thumb on the scale there for effect.
Even with some regression toward the mean, Cal Raleigh projects as a legit MVP candidate in 2026, and I’d argue that Julio Rodríguez is oddly underrated at this point. J-Rod’s top three comps are a little frightening in that they were all young superstars who faded quickly for varying reasons, but I wouldn’t read too much into that. The rest of the lineup projects as average to solidly above. I’m not sure an acquisition like Brendan Donovan, who is said to be available in trade, is necessary, though Donovan specifically could have a lot of value as a 500 plate appearance supersub if that’s the way the Mariners wanted to roll.
In terms of needs, there isn’t a lot that’s truly pressing here, just a few smaller things that might matter on the margins. A right-handed version of Luke Raley, one who could form a more natural platoon with Dominic Canzone and get Naylor his days off against some of the tougher lefties, would be nice, but we’re in real nit-picky territory now. Beyond that, I wouldn’t hate a more interesting catching mate for Raleigh than Andrew Knizner. The Big Dumper is the most important dumper in the majors, and trimming his defensive workload from 120-130 games to 100-110 games makes sense. Now, nobody can actually replace Raleigh’s bat behind the plate, but I’d prefer to see someone like Victor Caratini get 30-40 starts than Knizner. Lastly, another outfielder who could plausibly handle center field would be a worthwhile addition. Jonny Farmelo, who just missed the High-A playing time cutoff for an “official” projection, projects with an OPS+ over 90 in 2026 with more growth to come, but his a .221/.297/.348 triple-slash projection probably means it’s too soon to start thinking about getting him into the mix.
Pitchers
ZiPS also doesn’t see a whole to complain about in the rotation. Luis Castillo looks to be clearly past his peak, but he’s no longer being counted on as the ace, and he, Bryan Woo, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, and Bryce Miller make for a fabulous starting five. If there’s a weakness here, it’s in the backup plan if things go wrong: The Mariners are rather light on those fringy, 85-95 ERA+ Triple-A guys who are useful in emergencies. I think there’s some low-key work to be done around the edges, such as rolling the dice on guys with upside who might be willing to sign minor league deals, like Spencer Turnbull.
The projections are quite solid for the front five of the bullpen: Andrés Muñoz, Matt Brash, the recently acquired Jose A. Ferrer, Eduard Bazardo, and Gabe Speier. ZiPS doesn’t like the back side of the bullpen nearly as much, starting with Carlos Vargas, who gets a much stronger projection in Steamer than he does in ZiPS. Outside of maybe Casey Legumina, ZiPS just really isn’t interested in this part of the team’s relief corps, and if my computer had free will, agency, and individual opinions, it would probably want a good percentage of the remaining cash the Mariners spend in free agency to be used to add an arm or two here.
I know that I make a lot of jokes about the Jerry Dipoto .540 meme, but ZiPS actually sees this team as a good bit better than that going into 2026. Unless the Mariners get bitten by starting pitcher and outfield injuries, where they’re vulnerable depth-wise, this set of projections sees them as a .550-.580 team. That’s enough for them to likely be one of the American League’s elites when I run the official projected standings in March.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2026 due to injury, and players who were released in 2025. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Ambient Math-Rock Trip-Hop Yacht Metal band that only performs in abandoned malls, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.16.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR. It is important to remember that ZiPS is agnostic about playing time, and has no information about, for example, how quickly a team will call up a prospect or what veteran has fallen into disfavor.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by misinformation, a non-pragmatic reality, or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter or on BlueSky. This last is, however, not an actual requirement.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
I think Donovan makes a lot of sense for them, rather than relying on Williamson (while also offering Cole Young insurance).
I was thinking the same thing about Suarez (below) but this could be a “why not both” situation.
Hah, fair point!
I think Donovan fits so well because he can slot into 2B, 3B, or a corner OF spot as needed – it’s not like anyone they should be feeling certain about Robles, either.
I have a hard time buying that all of Emerson, Young, and especially Williamson are going to provide that much for the Mariners in 2026. If I were the Mariners I would definitely prefer a lineup with Suarez back at third base for that reason. It would bump Williamson out of the lineup and let Emerson develop at his own pace this year, with him being an option if Young struggles.
Also, Donovan or Suarez would help with a better bat to take up some of the DH PAs.
Suarez could play third against right handed pitching and get a break by DHing against lefties, letting Williamson play.
Assuming Williamson can hit lefties at all, which at this point is a bit iffy. But they probably do need a right handed bat who hits well enough to play everyday and since the outfield has two of those guys already (plus a platoon partner in Robles) the infield is the logical place for one.
ZiPS implies that Emerson should be the 2B rather than Young. And Williamson is fine at 3B.
This is a team with no weaknesses
86 ops+ at 2B and 87 at third are two pretty obvious holes
Not really, with excellent defense. They’re still close to 2 WAR.
I just “knew” that 2 of Rodriguez comps would be Cesar Cedeno & Vada Pinson when I saw Dan’s note about his comps being young stars that faded quickly.
I figured the 3rd would be Ruben Sierra, not Amos Otis, who was solid for most of his career, IIRC.
Cedeño and Pinson each had 9 year primes when they racked up 40ish WAR. They were excellent until they hit 29.
Otis had a 10 year prime when he accumulated 37 WAR. He pumpkined at 32.
He’s a bit different but a 9-10 40 WAR prime for Julio is quite good
I know, they were both very good players for a long time..However I’m not sure I’d call them “excellent” until they hit 29:
Cedeno’s 2 best year by far were his age 21-22 seasons, both 7+ WAR seasons. Then he had 5 WAR seasons at age 23 & 25..& then never hit those heights again.
4 of Pinson’s 5 best seasons were ages 20-25 & his 5th best was age 26.
Otis best season by far was his age 31 season.
Anyway, I think what Dan was getting at is just because those are the comps doesn’t mean Julio will regress like they did, esp offensively, as he gets older.
That said, Julio is at 22rWAR thru his 1st 4 seasons..if he has 40 rWAR thru 10 years, I think that WOULD be considered disappointing..at least as we sit here today. That would mean he averaged 3 WAR per year for the next 6 years.
There are worse #1 comps to have than Johnny Bench….
I think it’s impressive that Julio is only the second name in the projections. The big Dumper might be the best all round catcher I have seen projected. Plus, it does not seem like a stretch. I really kinda hope this team finally wins a World Series. As long as my NATS are not winning.
4.7 WAR as a 20th percentile projection for a catcher is absolutely nuts
Matt Wieters would like a word.
Not a knock on Raleigh but it got me curious, and it looks like ZiPS projected Buster Posey for 6.5 WAR in 2013 right after his MVP season (in the very first ZiPS team projection ever on Fangraphs!), slightly edging Cal out: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2013-zips-projections-san-francisco-giants/
Should we at least acknowledge that by midseason, the Mariners might have that extra starter in Kade Anderson?
“another outfielder who could plausibly handle center field would be a worthwhile addition”
Wouldn’t that be Victor Robles? The M’s have other players who can fill in at RF.
It’s hard to really expect much from Robles as a full time player. Should be excellent in a platoon, though.
Bizarre amount of 2003 Marlins in the pitcher comps, huh? Josh Beckett, Brad Penny, and Ugueth Urbina are all top 2 comps for some of the key pitchers.
I think the Mariners are probably the favorites in the American League right now, if only due to circumstance. They’re going to coast to a first-round bye while four teams in the AL East will be in a total battle royale.
Let’s hope Muñoz has a less notable post-playing career than Urbina
Nice use of the Trident.
Also, I find Laz Montes’ top 2 comps to be highly encouraging. Much too encouraging to trade him for a potential 1/2 win gain across 2B and 3B. The team is so strong overall that they can be in position to win the division with a mix of Young, Emerson, Bliss, Rivas and Williamson. And they can evaluate for 80+ games and add at the deadline if necessary.
Even knowing Cal hit 60HR last year its still crazy to see a catcher projected for 40+HR (okay he DHs some but lets ignore that), and having a 20th percentile projection of 4.7 WAR, what a monster! So fun to watch….outside of the ALCS this year where he caused some hair whitening for this Jays fan.
So, Cole Young has Mookie Betts as one of his comps, but Colt Emerson has… Jurickson Profar? (You do not want to see that #1 comp for your team’s #1 prospect!)
I also thought there’d be a DH chart on the graphic. The Mariners’ needs look greater when you plop the DH in there.
Anyway, this is a wealth of fun information. Thanks for giving me some good distractions!
I had forgotten about Pumpsie Green
We should remember pumpsie green and forget tom yawkey
Big Gene Conley and Pumpsie Green disappearing from the team bus …..is one of the all-time great baseball stories.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention! Surprised I’ve never heard about this as a baseball history nerd
Your fifth starter projecting for a 4.02 ERA is an incredible luxury
Most teams that’s the second or third guy
Abt time to pull that Gilbert (edit: and Bliss) for Hoerner swap I’ve been trying to post into existence the past couple offseasons
Scratch Bliss idk why edit that in lol
Why isn’t there an Andrew Knizner projection?
I can project him. It’s zero. Every statistic is a zero.
Poor Andrew Knizner’s claim to fame is that the Cardinals were so frustrated by Willson Contreras at catcher that they turned to him despite having a career -1.4 fWAR up to that point. Knizner rallied to put up a career best 92 wRC+ and a -8 FRV, leaving him at replacement level.
I would be interested in knowing the Cardinals was before and after they moved Contreras off catcher. I’m willing to bet it’s worse since.
It would be fun to watch this team. Too bad I’m blacked out.
How you feeling today?
Robles arrived on fire in Seattle. He was finally playing to the prospect reports when Seattle saw the same thing and signed him to a 2 year deal. Then the devastating injury robbed him of 80% of 2025.:Edgar definitely had him in a groove in 2024. I think Robles could get 500 at bats, hit .250 and steal 50 bases. That is very valuable. Open to thoughts why not.
He is victorious Robles. That is why not! He was born to tantalize and disappoint.
I had to look up Montes after that Bellinger comp. Suppose he’s a few years away. Still something to sink your teeth into there.
Montes is the most controversial top prospect in Mariner land. 70 raw power, but really big guy who may not be able to avoid striking out 30%+ in the Majors.
So big, and defensively raw, that everyone assumes he can’t play outfield in the majors. But he’s not as slow as some major league outfielders, and he’s all in on the effort he makes.
He could be a star, but might end up anywhere on the spectrum from Giancarlo Stanton to Carlos Peguero. He’ll be fun to root for.
Montes is one of the most fascinating archetypes: The hulking left handed TTO slugger. Adam Dunn, Jim Thome, Jack Cust, Kyle Schwarber, Carlos Pena, Ryan Howard…now Nick Kurtz.
Even when these guys started off in the corner outfield they migrated to 1B or DH relatively soon. There are other more athletic versions of this player like Darryl Strawberry and Joey Gallo.
But by all accounts he is closer to Matt Wallner than Gallo. Which would probably be a decent outcome for him and consistent with Eric’s scouting reports.
Why is there a long delay between you releasing these ZIPS projections and them appearing on player pages? Is there a room full of unpaid interns manually typing in all the numbers into the player pages? I have similar questions about the other projections but the difference is less noticeable because their releases aren’t featured prominently in articles on this site.
C’mon man. Surely you know that Dan publishing the article doesn’t just magically transport the results from his computer to the site. I’m not privy to any of this but I would be absolutely shocked if any aspect of the logistics of getting the tables into these articles was at all applicable to the process of adding the projections to the player pages. And no one needs the snark about interns; data importing, processing, and presentation is much more difficult and time-consuming than you seem to realize.
Not to mention it’s fun to take your time and read a few narratives and explainers per week in the otherwise dull off-season.
What are Harry Ford’s numbers like? He was traded after the nats projections were released
