Contract Crowdsourcing 2013-14: Edward Mujica

Free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series. As in other recent offseasons, FanGraphs is once again facilitating this offseason a contract-crowdsourcing project, the idea being to harness the wisdom of the crowds to the end of better understanding the 2013-14 free-agent market.

Note that, this year, in addition to asking readers to estimate the years/dollars each free agent is likely to receive, FanGraphs is also requesting that readers make note of how much they’d pay each free agent were they, themselves, actual GMs.

I’m a little skeptical of Mujica without Molina. He was pretty average in all of his stops before St. Louis, and that included some pretty pitcher friendly parks, so I’m not sure if Molina is the difference or not – and I’m not sure I want to pay to find out.

I would not want Mujica, I feel like you can get comparable value (i.e. consistency and performance) for the league minimum. It would be pretty hard to justify tying up salary on him because he is just as likely to turn in a replacement level season as he is to turn in an average one. With not much upside to boot.

If you know where you can reliably (as opposed to occasionally) get comparable value for league minimum, there are about 25 teams in baseball that would like to talk to you. Mujica was obviously performing over his head for the first two thirds of this season, but veering too far in the opposite direction is as misguided as pointing to the save totals and saying they’re significant.

I think you can get comparable value for the league minimum, but that’s because I think Mujica is injured. He was legitimately impressive in the first half of the season.

Any offer would have to be contingent upon passing a particularly thorough physical. No pass, no deal, or at least nothing but a minor-league contract and NRI, with health-oriented incentives. (BTW, was there a minor-league/NRI option in the form that I missed? I didn’t see it.) If whatever was wrong with him in September is just fatigue and/or wearing down, however, managing his work load more carefully than Matheny did has a pretty good chance of yielding well above replacement-level production. Yes, one “might” find a player or two at the league minimum with value comparable to what he can provide if healthy, but it would be folly to count on it.
