Contract Crowdsourcing 2013-14: Mark Ellis

Free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series. As in other recent offseasons, FanGraphs is once again facilitating this offseason a contract-crowdsourcing project, the idea being to harness the wisdom of the crowds to the end of better understanding the 2013-14 free-agent market.

Note that, this year, in addition to asking readers to estimate the years/dollars each free agent is likely to receive, FanGraphs is also requesting that readers make note of how much they’d pay each free agent were they, themselves, actual GMs.

Whether the Dodgers exercise the mutual option will depend on the postseason results and Ellis’s performance in said postseason. If he performs well, I see them exercising it.

if they sign Guerrero then they’ll pass on Ellis.

I think Hart is a more interesting option here. he was set for a fairly big payday after 2013 but lost it all. He had switched to first base in late 2012, but graded badly there after grading average in the OF. He could be valued quite differently depending on if: a team sees him as a potential capable OFer after the injury; a team wants him as a first baseman where he graded poorly but should be able to be better considering most players don’t lose defensive capability moving to a less demanding position; and how his offense will recover at his age.

If the Dodgers decline, they are nuts. I don’t see them paying 4 outfielders and going with an infield of oft-injured HanRam, Punto, and Uribe.

As a F/A he’d get 2/5
I’d give him 1/7
