Dan Szymborski FanGraphs Chat – 11/26/18
11:59 |
: Noonish: A time for chats, chatting and chaterations.
12:01 |
: Russell Martin for Jason Vargas and/or Anthony Swarzak? Is this close to being plausible for both teams?
12:01 |
: Meh, not really interested in that return from the Blue Jays side.
12:02 |
: If you’re not getting a more interesting piece in return, I’d rather just keep Martin around as the veteran backup to Jansen
12:02 |
: Can we assume that players not on the trade value list have less than the ~$40M that the guys at the back of the list do?
12:02 |
: That would be a good assumption!
12:02 |
: What is the chance that after next season, the Padres trade Eric Hosmer and $60 million to the Royals for Whit Merrifield?
12:02 |
: Even I’m not mean enough to do that to the ROyals.
12:02 |
: When do we get the ZiPS?!
12:03 |
: Starting rollout next week. It’s slightly later, but they’ll also tumble out faster – without Carson I’ll be rolling them out myself
12:03 |
: Chili with Thanksgiving. Yay or nay?
12:03 |
: As long as it’s proper chili.
12:03 |
: I don’t think there’s anything wrong with introducing your own family traditions to holidays.
12:03 |
: The puritans and the roughnecks may have enjoyed chili.
12:04 |
: Just so long as your family tradition isn’t putting beans in it and calling it chili.
12:04 |
: (Also, I need to remember to save this for the lightning round)
12:04 |
: IVE BEEN WAITING HERE SINCE 2:30 AM!!!
12:04 |
: The queue was actually open since then! Just not connectible with a link
12:04 |
: There’s been some talk about CIN making headway towards re-entering competitiveness this year, but…where are the wins going to come from in a stacked NL Central? If you take as a given that CIN will finish with, say, at least a winning record, what does that require from MIL/CHC/STL/PIT – multiple or all of them suffering significant regressions?
12:05 |
: It’s a bit of a problem for the Reds. It’s hard to see where those wins come from, they still have a lot to do with the rotation.
12:05 |
: You can steal enough to get them to 75-80, but the division will be tough and it’s hard to see the roster exploding for more of that.
12:06 |
: I was more hopeful about the Reds a year ago, but so many of their young pitchers just haven’t panned out yet
12:06 |
: And the injuries!
12:06 |
: According to Olney, the Marlins think Realmuto has more trade value now than last offseason. Thoughts?
12:06 |
: I believe the Marlins are correct here.
12:07 |
: One year closer to free agency, but a bit more confidence in his abilities, plus it’s overall better than it was.
12:07 |
: In my opinion, Thanksgiving is the worst holiday because there’s absolutely zero baseball posts on any of my favorite baseball websites for four days. Is there anything Fangraphs can do to help in the future?
12:07 |
: Ain’t nobody paying much attention to baseball over Thanksgiving! Even the rumor mills mostly grind to a halt.
12:08 |
: Brewers pitching will (over/under)perform their projected 10.4 Steamer WAR in 2019
12:08 |
: I DUNNO IF THIS IS A QUESTION
12:08 |
: What is the best Xmas gift the Orioles could get?
12:08 |
: A loophole that makes Trout an Oriole
12:08 |
: The Reds need to add pitching. Who do you think are the best realistic targets for Cincinnati this offseason?
12:09 |
: Eovaldi might be fun, but I’m not sure the Reds are here yet. THere are still so many questions about their pitching that I don’t necessarily want to just slap a couple veterans in there in a few spots
12:09 |
: Dan, rumors of Cano to Yankees, which makes some sense, they need a LH bat, torres can move over to SS, but Cano is 36, PED suspension and owed 5 years $120MM. What would have to happen for this to work, Obviously including Ellsbury, but with buyouts he is only owed like $44MM. Would Diaz added in make sense, or how much money would Sea have to eat to get a deal done? Adding Diaz means Yanks can save on not bringing back D-Rob.
12:10 |
: I would not include Diaz just to move Cano at a de facto 5/76
12:11 |
: Could the Dodgers be a match in the Cano sweepstakes or is he AL all the way?
12:11 |
: I don’t think it’s a great fit for the DOdgers
12:11 |
: You’ve already got Taylor and Muncy on the roster
12:12 |
: Now, if Cano were a 38-year-old free agent and they wanted him to play the Utley role, that would be fine
12:12 |
: but I don’t think it make ssense for the Dodgers to invest in Cano just for this role
12:12 |
: I can’t believe that the Mets are seriously considering non-tendering Travis d’Arnaud. Yes, he does get hurt a lot and hasn’t lived up to his projections. But if the Mets don’t tender him a contract, you know that he’ll suddenly become an all-star and keep the LOLMets jokes going for a few more years.
12:12 |
: Oh, the LOLMets joke mill will find grist for that mill either way.
12:12 |
: Odds that Bryce Harper signs a deal with multiple opt-outs, all of which that he ultimately declines to exercise, due to mediocre performance that convinces him he can’t do better than what’s on his deal?
12:13 |
: I think he’ll end up with opt-outs, but too many moving parts here to give you a prob.
12:14 |
: I’ll evaluate the deal when it happens!
12:14 |
: Could the Cubs use their surplus of major league position players to swing a deal for Noah Syndergaard?
12:15 |
: Logically, I’d say no, but the Mets do seem like they’re willing to take less value in return for OMG WIN NOW
12:15 |
: Dan, how do the mariners and yanks make an ellsbury for cano swap work? Both teams want to reduce payroll. How do they expand the deal to make it a win win for both sides?
12:16 |
: Thank you for your insightful elegy for the Cardinals. It was well thought out and depressing (as a fan reading the elegy).
12:16 |
: Thanks! I hope you guys are enjoying the series.
12:18 |
: Any update on my teammate Mr Honeywell as he rehabs and your outlook for him?
12:19 |
: Last I heard in the summer was that he was throwing, if there was a new setback, I haven’t heard
12:20 |
: I believe he’s still scheduled to be back early next year and the Rays will be careful
12:20 |
: The sale of MLBAM was a one time cash influx, last offseason, right? Why does it keep getting brought up when discussing payroll capabilities of teams in future seasons?
12:20 |
: Are you sure you’re not seeing people taking into account increased other national money?
12:21 |
: Alexa, pull up that Dan Szymborski chat…..Szymborski…..ZIM…BOER….SKEEE!….Oh shut up. No you shut up….Shut up or I’ll replace you with the bootleg Teddy Ruxpin I found on Alibaba.com….that’s right, Danny Ruskin….Oh, you will, will you? I’d like to see you try!
12:21 |
: When I was a kid, I drew a comic about a kid who had a demonically possessed Teddy Ruxpin doll that he was charged with keeping away from Freddy Krueger, who needed it to cross into the real world permanently
12:21 |
: Has anyone ever referred to you as “Scrabble” like Marc Rzepczynski?
12:21 |
: No
12:22 |
: But I’ve been called Alpha-Bitsz and DJ Szyzzle
12:22 |
: Why does Fangraphs put that “sa” in front of the player id for minor leaguers (and then I think the actual ID is totally different)? That converts it into a string in Excel, databases, etc., and makes for quite a pain.
12:22 |
: Couldn’t say! Would have to consult with David or Sean!
12:23 |
: Next major piece to be traded? Goldsmith? Leake? Segura? Other?
12:23 |
: I think Leake’s fairly likely to go
12:24 |
: Garret Hampson as everyday player (2B) or super-sub?
12:24 |
: I think he *could* be an everyday player. I hope the Rockies turn out to be interested in finding out.
12:24 |
: How much better would MLB be with college-style rivalry trophies? How great would it be see the White Sox rush the Cubs’ dugout to take back a bronze bust of Harry Caray?
12:24 |
: That woudl be fun, though I don’t know if it would work out as well culturally as it has with colleges
12:25 |
: Last week, #PadresTwitter blew up over the potential Segura-Leake deal for Wil Myers. Most said that the trade should happen asap, but I couldn’t help but be skeptical of such a deal if it means moving Tatis to 3B for the next 4 years. My argument is that, if you trade for Segura, you have to move him to 2B after this season and keep Tatis Jr. at SS. Doing so would likely mean trading Urias and looking for an established 3B rather than moving Tatis over to 3B. My perspective is that Segura and Tatis stand to both lose value if Segura plays SS and Tatis moves to 3B. Is this a proper way to look at such a trade? Do you see Segura losing value by staying at SS? Would Segura gain/retain value by switching to 2B? Finally, would Tatis lose value switching to 3B?
12:26 |
: It would be such a good trade that it would be hard to worry too much about the positional utility.
12:26 |
: I think if you can make that actual trade, you make that trade and let the chips falls where they may.
12:27 |
: I’d personally prioritize Tatis Jr. at short not segura, as I would have with the O’s and Machado some years ago.
12:27 |
: What are your thoughts on the Padres apparently trying to use major leaguers (Margot, Hedges, Myers) to acquire better major leaguers (Syndergaard, Segura) while presumably leaving their upper minors untouched?
12:27 |
: I don’t think it’s a bad idea when you talk about pieces that you actually want long-term.
12:29 |
: My complaints about the Hosmer signing weren’t because I thought the Padres, even when rebuilding, should run away from a core player that they could build around for the next 5 years.
12:29 |
: My complaints were because I didn’t think Hosmer was a very good player.
12:29 |
: If you get Thor somehow, I mean he’s kinda the best case scenario for what anyone in the Padres will develop into
12:29 |
: I don’t have trouble trading value for getting Thor rather than speculative thor
12:30 |
: Why do some chat hosts not open the queue until the minute the chat starts? We all appreciate that you open yours early.
12:30 |
: Would hace to ask them! I like having a queue
12:30 |
: BUt it would be better if I was more selective early so I didn’t fall horribly behind.
12:30 |
: I’d *love* to answer every question, but I get way more questions than I can answer.
12:30 |
: If all of the manager jobs for every non-playoff team came open after the World Series, which job would be the most coveted?
12:31 |
: Cardinals
12:31 |
: Chances Dylan Bundy turns it around in 2019? Will he be on the Orioles through the entire season?
12:31 |
: I’m increasingly skeptical about his future.
12:31 |
: Any guess as to what Arenado is reasonably looking for in a contract extension? Or is free agency pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point?
12:31 |
: He’s going to be pushing $200 million.
12:31 |
: What he’s personally looking for, I’m not sure.
12:32 |
: Would Mets take Soroka, Riley, and Gohara for Syndergaard? Three high ranking MLB ready prospects so they don’t go to immediate “rebuild” and have a solid infield for the future (Alonso, McNeil, Rosario, Riley). Braves get a true ace while still keeping several of their top young arms and can pursue Donaldson in FA while moving Camargo to utility. Seems like a win win to me.
12:32 |
: I don’t think it’s a crazy trade, though I think I’d go a little lighter – I think the package is a little better than the Sale package, which I also loved.
12:33 |
: But the problem is, I don’t think the Mets will take a non-crazy trade if it’s just prospect-types
12:34 |
: If PHI signs Corbin, which if any of their incumbent SP’s do they move to make room? TEX fan here who would love to get Eickhoff back.
12:35 |
: I think Eickhoff would be the most likely to be traded
12:35 |
: Mike Matheny to the Royals should make the other 29 teams very happy, no?
12:35 |
: Yes
12:35 |
: Think M’s will succeed in trading Cano? What someone have to give back real prospects?
12:35 |
: I think they’ll trade Cano but not get serious prospects.
12:35 |
: Lots of trade chatter involving Wil Myers. Does he have any real trade value or more of a salary dump/swap of big (and not very good) contracts?
12:35 |
: Padres would have to eat quite a bit
12:35 |
: Yankees still in lead on Corbin? Given Yanks seem to still want to remain under luxury tax threshold, does his signing likely mean no Machado and a low cost Didi stand-in? Thanks!
12:36 |
: I still think it’s posturing.
12:36 |
: The tax threshold
12:36 |
: What is the Twins plan this offseason?
12:36 |
: I think there’s a good chance that the Twins shock with a signing, though not Machado/Harper
12:36 |
: Which team do you get the least questions about? Tigers? Rangers?
12:36 |
: They’re definitely down there.
12:37 |
: Not because they’re the worst or something, but incompetent lousy teams get more comments.
12:38 |
: Is Brandon Nimmo a 3-WAR player moving forward?
12:38 |
: I think he is.
12:38 |
: Is Choo totally untradeable right now? Bat useful but solely a DH at this point.
12:38 |
: I don’t believe so. THe question is how much the Rangers are willing to eat.
12:38 |
: If Trout went to the O’s wouldn’t they just trade him?
12:38 |
: Sure, but you could get ALL THE BACON AND EGGS YOU HAVE for him
12:38 |
: Mike Leake to the Padres for?
12:39 |
: I’m mostly interested in Leake for the Padres because he enables Segura-for-Myers, at least in the rumor which I’m still not sure has that much solid in it.
12:39 |
: Not including Vlad Jr..who are a few of the minor leaguers you are most excited to see in the big league next year and a favorite for ROY in both leagues?
12:39 |
: He’s not a ROY favorite, but I STILL want to see Honeywell in the majors
12:39 |
: because SCREWBALL
12:40 |
: REally want to see Eloy’s power in the majors
12:40 |
: and Senzel
12:40 |
: More concrete predictions, you gotta wait!
12:40 |
: Does someone cave and give Miami the absurd haul it wants for Realmuto? Or do Marlins fans watch helplessly as his value decreases, leading Jeter to desperately accept a deal he would laugh at today?
12:40 |
: I think they’ll get a good, but not overwhelming package.
12:40 |
: I know this is a Steamer question about their internals but, other than ‘aging curve’, do you know why they would project a drop off to negative -7.1 DEF for Cano after essentially ‘always’ being positive?
12:41 |
: No idea.
12:41 |
: In looking across the crap that is the AL Central, I can see the White Sox approaching .500. Your thoughts?
12:41 |
: They could. There’s a lot of talent in the organization and sometimes you just hit the PROSPECT SINGULARITY
12:41 |
: Did you hear Wilbon’s DeGrom take? It isn’t not just a “bad take”, it disqualifies him from ever having an opinion on baseball (and all sports imho).
12:41 |
: It was bad.
12:41 |
: When Wilmer Flores cried during the game in 2015 over being traded to another organization, do you think those were tears of sadness, or tears of joy at being traded to a non-dysfunctional organization?
12:41 |
: Only he knows in his heart.
12:41 |
: If you are the Braves, do you ride your huge surplus of pitching prospects to mid-season, or look to do something now?
12:42 |
: I’d be willing to make trades of prospect, but it depends on the exact opportunity.
12:42 |
: I wouldn’t trade them just to make an add.
12:42 |
: Other than via NDA’s, is there any way that the Astros could protect their intellectual property after all of this recent ‘brain drain’? As a ‘President’ of a front office, what controls would you try to put in place to maintain your edges even if your personnel are poached?
12:42 |
: It’s kinda tricky because there’s only so many guys you can give promotions to.
12:43 |
: It’s not like the Astros can keep the core analysts
12:43 |
: together for a decade
12:44 |
: and then promote and have 5 team presidents, 2 team generalissimos, 1 team duce, 1 team emperor, and Luhnow as the Emperor-God-King
12:44 |
: Does it seem like assessing trades on a surplus value basis misses something about actual value? If Mike trout was paid everything he’s worth, wouldn’t you still trade for him because he’s 9 wins in one roster spot?
12:44 |
: Then the question would be if the model is properly evaluating the value of having everything in one.
12:44 |
: It’s something that’s hard to evaluate, not just in baseball.
12:45 |
: The ZiPS and Elegies are fantastic but torture to wait for their release, Dan R.R. Szymborski!
12:45 |
: I write more than 10 words a day.
12:45 |
: Nomo got THICC
12:46 |
: Has a baseball game played in protest ever changed the outcome of the game?
12:46 |
: It’s been a while, but there have been a few occasions
12:46 |
: A couple times, protested called games during rain delays
12:48 |
: The Pirates once got a game against the Dodgers restarted because of an illegal pitcher replacement
12:48 |
: Can I get a team’s (like the Rockies) top 10 for Abreu?
12:48 |
: No
12:48 |
: Loving the Elegy series, when can we expect one for the surprise Atlanta Braves?
12:48 |
: This week1
12:48 |
: Does fangraphs have any plans to allow ‘leaderboards’ that allow pitches to be sorted, not by Value, but by O Sw%, SwStrk%, etc? for example if I want to see whose “slider” got the most whiffs, right now I have to go pitcher by pitcher looking at their sliders…
12:49 |
: Have you tried a custom leaderboard? Haven’t tried this exact sorting myself
12:49 |
: Jon Gray to the Rangers for Nomar Mazara. Who says no?
12:49 |
: It’s nto the craziest thing I’ve heard.
12:50 |
: Rockies probably turn it down because they sign Maybin or Span or something
12:50 |
: Have you thought about option theory in the context of single season player valuation? Ie if a projected 0 war player has higher error bars, he is more valuable because you can wait and see how good he is
12:51 |
: It’s part of the reason why we’re critical of rebuilding teams playing bad veterans over equally bad 22-year-olds
12:51 |
: Noticeably fewer emoticons today… Thanksgiving hangover?
12:51 |
: People just don’t use the emoji that much
12:51 |
: Jeff says he gets plenty of questions as it is so he doesn’t need a queue
12:52 |
: I like an error margin!
12:52 |
: Will any of the big name free agents sign before the conclusion of the winter meetings this year?
12:52 |
: I think at least one
12:52 |
: Did you watch “The Match”?
12:52 |
: I did not
12:53 |
: What are the odds that Eloy Jimenez turns out better than Vlad Guerrero Jr?
12:53 |
: Fairly low, but a lot of things are possible.
12:53 |
: Vlad’s just a more well-rounded player, he has a lot of paths to awesome
12:53 |
: I’d love for the Rockies to send Desmond and Rodgers to Miami for Realmuto. Who else would they have to include, and how much cash?
12:53 |
: I think the Marlins would assume that Rodgers is there just to pay for taking Desmond
12:54 |
: Upside HR output for Eloy? 35 or more?
12:54 |
: UPSIDE Hr power is like the moon
12:54 |
: The Duquette era is over in Baltimore. They would trade Trout for prospects, not bacon and eggs.
12:54 |
: I didn’t say a lot of bacon and eggs. I said ALL THE BACON AND EGGS YOU HAVE
12:54 |
: is Harrison Bader a 3+ WAR player from now on? even if it mostly comes from his glove and baserunning. Or does his inability to hit RHP doom him?
12:54 |
: If that defense holds up, it would be hard not to be.
12:54 |
: Hi, I’m a high schooler trying to make a system to suggest the optimal shift for my high school team. Lack of data points, small sample size, and going from scratch are going to be tough. Got any advice?
12:55 |
: Yeah, that’s kind of the problem. It’ll be hard to justify it to a coach based on data.
12:55 |
: I am the Silver Slugger. I am he who wields the Golden Glove. The Gods tremble at the mere mention of my name. And my enemies will burn. That includes you, Dan.
12:55 |
: If you put beans in chili, what do you call it? Bean soup?
12:55 |
: Bean and beef stew.
12:55 |
: Re: Rivalry Trophies: Back in the day, the Blue Jays and the Expos used to have a midseason exhibition game (usually on July 1 – formerly Dominion Day and now Canada Day) where they would vie for the Pearson Cup (named after former Canadian PM Lester B. Pearson, who also gives his name to the Toronto Airport — YYZ). YYZ, of course, is a fairly famous song by Rush.
12:55 |
: How do you see the Syndergaard situation playing out? Can you project a deal?
12:55 |
: I think in the end, nothing happens.
12:56 |
: Mazara (1.4 WAR in three seasons) for Gray (10.3 WAR in four seaons) is a non-starter.
12:56 |
: The Rockies don’t seem as into Gray as I am.
12:56 |
: What is Sonny Gray worth in terms of prospects?
12:56 |
: Not much.
12:56 |
: Do you think Joc Pederson is a bust? Would the Dodgers have been better off trading him for Jose Quintana in 2016?
12:57 |
: Joc’s a good player.
12:57 |
: Yes, he has some real weaknessed, but he’s not remotely a bust. He’s not Glenn Braggs.
12:57 |
: Should the Indians construct their 2019 roster specifically for playoff success, knowing that they face a virtually unobstructed path to October baseball?
12:58 |
: Not ENTIRELY, but keep in the back fo their mind.
12:58 |
: How long until we get the first “sabermetrically-driven” owner, or are most owners already mostly analytically-inclined?
12:58 |
: A significant percentage are at least inclined.
12:58 |
: Like Henry
12:58 |
: Research idea: How many players currently on the Padres 40-man roster has Dave Cameron referred to as “terrible,” “bad,” or “not good” over the years?
12:59 |
: Quite a few. Can you blame him given the team’s record?
12:59 |
: Sonny Gray’s road numbers were well above average. I can see the yankees getting an interesting prospect or 2
12:59 |
: Interesting, but not players with a lot of value
1:00 |
: OK, let’s start the Lightning ROund!
1:00 |
: The rules as usual are thus: I have to answer everything, so long as it is off-topic and not part of a few specific categories (work related, explicit, politics)
1:00 |
: I can CHOOSE to answer those, but if I don’t, I don’t go to jail.
1:01 |
: Ground beef in a stew? Come on Szymborski. That’s madness!
1:01 |
: Beans in chili is madenss.
1:01 |
: madness
1:01 |
: I have the worst-spelled chat.
1:01 |
: How was your Thanksgiving? Did you pour gravy all over your plate then call it a “Thanksgiving soup”?
1:01 |
: It was fine! I would never do that. I don’t like food touching and I don’t add gravy until non-turkey items are done because I only want the gravy on the turkey
1:01 |
: What was the worst gift you ever regifted to a supposed friend or family member? and do the cats have stockings hung by the chimney with care?
1:01 |
: I’ve never regifted anything.
1:01 |
: If someone named a beetle after you, would you be flattered or disgusted?
1:02 |
