Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 12/22/16

1:12
Eno Sarris: hey this is sort of holiday like

12:00
Bork: Hello, friend!

12:00
Eno Sarris: hello

12:01
hooha: Where would you recommend finding decent ADP data this early in the fantasy baseball season?

12:01
Eno Sarris: Couch managers has some stuff up.

12:01
hooha: drink of choice for christmas dinner?

12:01
Eno Sarris: I’ve got a Perennial Abraxas that will probably do the trick.

12:01
asabin: In your opinion, what is the best-run organization in baseball?

12:02
Eno Sarris: Cubs. Really willing to incorporate all sorts of thinking into one stream. Theo listens.

12:02
Fat Kenny G: How much more would Odubel have to ask for before the Phillies would have said “no thanks, we’ll wait it out.”? I feel like he left ten million or so on the table.

12:02
Eno Sarris: With a story like his, maybe it’s okay to take the payday.

12:02
Steve: Aledmys Diaz far outperformed initial reports on him coming into the year. Are you a believer of last year’s performance?

12:04
Eno Sarris: I’m a little worried about the defense, and I’m just not sure how much to believe a guy with a power explosion when all he has is “I added a leg kick,” but he has a chance to regress in a few different ways and still be a league average player, so the Cards did it again.

12:04
Chael: Profar as 1b?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Giving up too much of his value.

12:04
hooha: f@ck, marry, kill: Kershaw, Trout, & Machado

12:05
Eno Sarris: That order. I love Machado, but when I talked to him about what he can see and he said he couldn’t see anything but maybe velocity cue, I wondered about his approach and how it will age.

12:05
Jose Bautista’s Mom: Will my son have a bounce-back year this year?

12:06
Eno Sarris: He’s 36. You’re hoping for him to be about the same with better health I think.

12:06
Unemployed reindeer handler: The White Sox’s asking price for Quintana seems to be much larger than what some writers ‘recommend’ they take. Do you think the White Sox are intentionally asking for trade-deadline sized packages now to let the market know what he’ll cost in a few months?

12:07
Eno Sarris: Here’s why I think they’re waiting to be bowled over. If you look at the guys they got back, they’ll mostly be in the big leagues in the next two years. They have Q for four. If any of those pitchers work out, Q/Rodon/+new guy is actually a good 1-3, possibly *really* good. I know they’ll have holes elsewhere, but they’ll also have cut some money in the meantime. It’s not crazy to think they could be competitive in the next four years.

12:08
Carl: Gary Sanchez: for real for real?

12:08
Eno Sarris: real real

12:08
Benbadatroto: Eno, what’s Meadows dream ceiling? Can he be a superstar?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Depends if that ass produces the power that its prodigiousness suggests it can.

12:08
Disco Dan: who is your top pet prospect?

12:09
Eno Sarris: Probably Ozzie Albies — I just think he’ll be useful at worst and maybe really fun to watch if he gets to that ceiling. If you need me to delve deeper, a guy like Travis Demerrite was my guy last year, so many tools and just one or two tweaks from being great. Even deeper? Mike Sorotka is a fun pitcher.

12:09
Eno Sarris: I’m not even sure what Sorotka’s first name is lol.

12:10
Zigs: What do you think a season from Lance Lynn looks like? Am I crazy to think that he will have a solid bounce back(as health permits)? My thinking is that he relies heavily on fastballs and not so much on offspeed pitches which will protect his elbow. Add that to how he looked coming back at the end of last year, and he has sleeper written all over him.

12:10
Eno Sarris: I guess, but the newest evidence is that the higher velo pitches are the biggest stressors.

12:10
Harmony: Why hasn’t Chile produced any MLB players? I’m writing from Chile where I can’t even find a soccer match this holiday week.

12:11
Eno Sarris: It’s almost always about infrastructure.

12:11
OC: Beer recs for Oahu?

12:12
Eno Sarris: Find some Big Island Brewhaus, they make a red stout that’s awesome, and their IPAs are fruity West Coasters. Maui beer is good. As for actual locations, Kona Brewing is fine, Aloha Beer Company too.

12:12
Roadhog: I really want Encarnacion on the A’s. #3 hitter really thickens out the rest of the lineup.

12:12
Eno Sarris: Dude they are going to have a February surprise. Trumbo! Who knows. Some slugger.

12:13
Nelson: Who stays better longer: Carrasco or Kluber?

12:13
Eno Sarris: I don’t.. know. So Carrasco is starting with much better velocity, so he has further to drop there. But! His command is worse. Much worse. What happens when he can’t throw it to the middle of the zone because he’s down to 92/93? I think Kluber might do better at 89/90 than Carrasco at 92/93….

12:13
Nelson: Realistic for Soler this year: .260 22HR. Platoon or nah?

12:15
Eno Sarris: I think he plays most of the year because at first they show off their new player, and then later they won’t be great and they’ll want to know if they have to platoon him later. Plus, he’s a righty. I think he plays when he’s not hurt and those numbers are super attainable.

12:15
Eno Sarris: Let’s be French today.

12:17
Chris: Do the Padres add any more to their rotation?

12:17
Eno Sarris: oh my I hope they do or

12:17
Bud : Wily Peralta pitched readid well in August and September. Do you think it is a break sign of sorts for 2017.

12:17
Eno Sarris: Not really, because it was a velo bounce back and velo normally just dies.

12:18
Chris: Do you see any breakout prospects from the Padres farm system?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Hunter Renfroe going hit 30 bombs this year. I’m convinced. If you want a ‘pet’ guy, I’ve always like FRANCHY Cordero, partially for the name, but also because I believe in the bat and think he can find a spot.

12:19
Carl: Even knowing he was Jamaican, I would have bet a lot of money that Kyle O’Quinn on the Knicks was white. Nope.

12:20
Eno Sarris: He’s Jamaican?!!! YAASSSSS. The Knicks have a Jamaican center and he’s decent. It’s the late 80s again. Tell me there’s a Wilkins dunking somewhere.

12:20
LudeBurger: Fangraphs is the best-run org in baseball 😉

12:20
Nelson: I want Centennial hops to make a comeback. Gimme dat bitter!!!

12:20
LudeBurger: My toes! My toes! My toes! Cowabunga! Eno Chat!

12:20
Eno Sarris: Weird interlude, but I’ll take it.

12:20
Silverman: Archer for Albies, Foltynewicz, Newcomb & Toussaint. Who says no?

12:20
Sandy Kazmir: Archer for Dahl+Hoffman+Tapia, who says no?

12:21
Eno Sarris: You take the Dahl led deal if both are on the table, as much as I like Albies, I think. I think they might take either of these deals though, so it’s all about the sending team.

12:21
Pat: Spending less time doing your job (writing baseball) and spending more time focusing on drinking beer…. Step one is admitting you have a problem Eno….

12:22
Eno Sarris: Guess which one pays better. I’ll give you three guesses and the first three don’t count.

12:22
Ricky: Is there any work done to using statcast for park factor adjustments?

12:22
Eno Sarris: I tried to do it for the piece on Oakland’s Mount Davis killing fly balls, but yeah I’m sure someone is going to do something really fun there.

12:23
Frank: Can Dansby Swanson be anything similar to Francisco Lindor with the bat?

12:23
Eno Sarris: He’ll need to make a lot more contact this year.

12:23
Buff: Your thoughts on Brandon Maurer? Similar to or different than Al Melchior’s? Likelihood of retaining the closer role through the year and into 2018?

12:23
Eno Sarris: If he stays on the team all year, yeah I like him. I’d say 2/3 of a good closer though, because of that trade deadline.

12:24
Joe: What do you think of Maeda in a keep forever league?

12:24
Eno Sarris: I think he’ll be fine, but I doubt he’ll get better, at 28 and with some sort of unspecified injury history that hurt him at the negotiating table.

12:24
Chris: How many Padre Rule V draft picks stick?

12:25
Eno Sarris: On the Padres alone at least one haha. They had themselves a day. Pretty hilarious, but if you’ve got openings at the back of your 25, you better do something like that and see if you can’t score a Johan or Odubel.

12:25
Maxamuz: Man I don’t know who to keep this upcoming year Eno. Do I keep Bregman at $8 or Story at $8 or both? Do I keep Sonny Gray at $8 or Keuchel at $8 or neither?

12:25
Eno Sarris: Keep both hitters and neither pitcher!

12:26
Frank: Does Felix Hernandez rebound a little or is this who he is?

12:26
Eno Sarris: Man I think this is it. If he can get it back up to 91-92, maybe he’s more 3.5/8k9/50GB and that’s a bounceback but it’s not King Felix.

12:26
Packing it in: Assuming Shoemakers brain is healed, can we expect sub 3.5 with 175-200K?

12:27
Eno Sarris: Hard to project him for that many innings, IMO.

12:27
john wick: what do you expect from rick porcello next season?

12:28
Eno Sarris: Regression to a good #3. It’s nice that he figured out how to use the four-seam better, but the peripherals didn’t support all that.

12:28
Hello Eno: Do we trust Bundy to be a #2 or is he more #5/RP? Thx

12:28
Eno Sarris: With good health I absolutely think he’ll be a #2. Best stuff on that staff.

12:28
Cubbies: Many articles/respected opinions equate forearm strains in pitchers often leading to TJ surgery. With Wade Davis having issues twice last season does the Royals willingness to trade him even though they are supposedly going all in in 2017 suggest they know more than what the Cubs to decipher from the medicals? Are the Cubs rolling the dice with this trade?

12:29
Eno Sarris: I think one of the few things that you can say with certainty is that past elbow injury predicts future elbow injury. Perhaps the Cubs don’t consider the forearm predictive in that way.

12:29
John: Dave mentioned yesterday that “high leverage innings” are factored into WAR for a relief pitcher. If “clutch” is not a thing, how can “high leverage innings” be a thing?

12:30
Eno Sarris: Because clutch is a measure of how good the player does in those high leverage situations. Giving a reliever credit for *being* in high leverage situations, regardless of what he does, is different. He can suck in those high leverage innings and cost his WAR/value.

12:31
Curtis: Given the rise in popularity of young cost controlled players over more expensive veterans (sort of), could we see a team roll all 25 players over in consecutive years? Say the Cubs or Astros…

12:32
Eno Sarris: One problem, a problem Billy Beane pointed out, is that arbitration still gets pretty expensive. Look at how the Astros payroll just skyrocketed.

12:33
Brad: 14 team roto obp, healy or josh bell this year? Thanks.

12:33
Eno Sarris: Damn. .350 OBP, .140 ISO vs what I’d call .320 OBP, .175+ ISO, but at third base. I might take Healy here.

12:33
Chet: Do you think Dallas Keuchel will have another Cy Young type season in his career or is he an average starter from here on out?

12:33
Eno Sarris: I’ll take average.

12:33
Nelson: All this time I thought Kenny Loggins and Kenny Rogers were the same person. I am so embarrassed!

12:34
tommy lasagna, sr.: charles grodin was sneaky average in beethoven…”BAAAYYYYY-TOOOOOOOOVEEENNNNN!”

12:34
brant brown dropped the ball: i absolutely agree with you, masha, silvestrov’s concept of the postlude, of a nostalgia for tonality expressed as a dissipation of tonality, sounds more interesting than his music

12:34
Eno Sarris: This may be one of the better interludes of all time, and it just came out of nowhere.

12:34
adam: how much longer do I have to deal with a losing product considering the Preller dominican signings won’t arrive for another 3 years?

12:34
Eno Sarris: four years?

12:35
Friarfaithful117: Travis Jankowski a starter this season?

12:36
Eno Sarris: Yeah. Well. I think they’ll find a way to get 550+ from four OF types, with Dickerson DHing and pinch hitting and all that.

12:36
Darth Pineda: Do you collect cards or memorabilia of any particular player(s)?

12:36
Eno Sarris: This all started with baseball card collecting, but it’s on lock down until the kids are older.

12:36
BK: Eno, any Canadian beer recommendations? We don’t get much for craft beer from the US where I’m from.

12:37
Eno Sarris: All I got is everything Bellwoods and Ball’s Falls (love Bench).

12:37
Biscuit: Imperial IPA is best. Why are we even having this debate anymore!?

12:37
Eno Sarris: They feel a little boozy for me these days.

12:37
The Cincinnati Kid: Just won a championship and look pretty good this year (10 teams, Keep 10, players go up a Rd per year), so: Keep Blackmon (Rd 3) and Scherzer (Rd 4) or Gallo (Rd 25) and Bird (Rd 28).

12:38
Eno Sarris: Def not Gallo but I’m staring a hole into that Bird, especially if Blackmon gets traded.

12:38
Sirras: Suppose you have two players who hit for the same triple-slash. One hits for that line exactly all year. The other hits way above it for half the year and way below it for the other half. All else being equal and assuming you don’t know when the volatile guy will be hot/cold, does one player provide his team with more value/opportunities to win?

12:38
Eno Sarris: Volatility can be useful. Think of the pitcher that gives up 4 runs *every* time versus the guy that alternates 6 and 2. You’d win most of those 2-run games, while you might just lose a ton of those 4-run games…

12:39
Eno Sarris: I think the real answer is diversity. Some Steady Eddies and some Girls with the Curl.

12:39
Weekly Eovaldi Question: Weekly Eovaldi Question =[

12:39
Eno Sarris: sigh.

12:39
STEHPEHN PICSTOEHTY: WE WEN 2 STANFROD LOL

12:39
Jeff in T.O.: As a Blue Jay fan, Please don’t bring up Mike Sirotka

12:40
tommy lasagna, sr.: this dude at my work does grocery shopping on his 30 minute lunch break. one time he had ground beef and five tilapia filets sitting in our breakroom fridge. how do i get away with murder?

12:40
Eno Sarris: we all over the map.

12:40
Chael: Best value of the hot stove league so far?

12:41
Eno Sarris: Justin Turner, Bartolo Colon?

12:41
Aaron: My local bar had a “Darkest Day, Darkest Beers” event last night. Had so, so many good stouts. BCBS, Evil Twin Aun Mas, local stuff. Will the Friday beerchats at Beergraphs still be a thing, or nah? If no, will there be something comparable at the new site?

12:42
Eno Sarris: A lot to figure out, but I always liked that one, so I’ll see if we cant’ have something similar at least.

12:42
rustydude: Who would be the 10 names (or less) on your HOF ballot if you had one?

12:44
Eno Sarris: Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Jeff Bagwell, Mike Mussina, Larry Walker, Edgar Martinez, Tim Raines, Curt Schilling, Vladimir Guerrero… Manny f’in Ramirez. Don’t at me.

12:44
shubbles: Over/under: my sugar or my booger?

12:44
DN: Isn’t using constant park factors a problem? Like if I only hit singles I look a lot better if I am in a pitchers park than a hitters park even though I’d perform the same in either park. A hitter park factor seems to punish those with below average power and not adjust enough for power hitters.

12:45
Eno Sarris: Yeah but statcast power factors could be way more dynamic. We’re talking about where balls with certain velocities and angles end up and what they produce, you could have different park factors for different types of hitters.

12:45
Zihuatenejo: Do you think a Puig trade is likely to happen before the season starts?

12:46
Eno Sarris: Puig and De Leon for Dozier? Seems a bit much, but I’m a Puig backer.

12:47
Eno Sarris: shared for video and also because it fits the music we playing today

12:47
Kev: % chance Paxton breaks out (top 20 sp) in 2017?

12:47
Eno Sarris: 30%? Projections already have him in the top 50 or so I’d guess.

12:48
Biscuit: My two-year old daughter recently learned to laugh at her own farts. Proudest dad moment yet.

12:49
DN: What are your expectations for Gsellman for next year? Also, what is a good comp for him in terms of stuff?

12:50
Eno Sarris: It’s really hard to find a comp because he’s got good velocity, but he’s kind of kitchen sink. Who’s 93+ but kitchen sink with decent command?? Like a Tanner Roark with better velo?

12:50
tommy lasagna, sr.: googled austin meadows’ ass/images. deleted browsing history. came back to chat.

12:50
Dr. Zizmor: Tis the season for monster RP contracts! Ha, but seriously, regarding Melancon’s curve, does spin ratejfbfo undhej Oh ohh oHhhhyywuehebeskak w in’!! AEWRREFOWLF

12:51
forever it: Found out this week there’s a street in Millbrae south of SF called Ludeman Lane

12:51
Eno Sarris: oh man that’s on my way to the park, I think I could find that and take a picture.

12:51
Ryan: xStats say Gary Sanchez was a 33 HR (extrapolated to 600PA) and .300 AVG guy last year. You buying it?

12:51
Eno Sarris: Not the batting average so much. Just think pitchers will find something to exploit.

12:51
Kristen: Little surprised FA Rubby De La Rosa is still floating out there with his power arm. Is the possibility of him needing TJ surgery in the future scaring teams off?

12:51
Eno Sarris: Yeah those medicals must be scary.

12:52
biffyclyro: What have you drunk in/from Iowa? Any memorable beers?

12:53
Eno Sarris: Only Toppling Goliath pseudo Sue, which was amazing and changed me. Now I like lighter more soiffable pale ales.

12:53
Chael: Archer for the sky, the moon and our dreams, who says no?

12:53
Eno Sarris: The Rays.

12:53
Dominik: Am I the only one who is not overwhelmed by the Phillies rebuild? I mean klentak did a good job considering what he had to work with but other teams like the braves, brewers and maybe padres seem to have overtaken Phillies farm system in a pretty short time. Philly has some nice depth in young guys in both majors and minors but I don’t really see ace pitchers or power/on base double threat bats. Most of their hitting prospects have tools but contact or/and plate discipline issues. I think they will become better but I don’t see a clear path to contender for them currently (time independent). Am I way off base?

12:54
Eno Sarris: I disagree fairly heartily, probably because I really like Nola, Eickhoff and Vazquez. And Franco and JPC. And they have money.

12:54
tommy lasagna, sr.: did you go through a pauly shore phase too? loved every movie he did for like 5 years, up until bio-dome…

12:54
Eno Sarris: The weasel!

12:54
Kyle O’Quinn: Im from Jamaica QUEENS, Dummy!

12:54
Eno Sarris: Dammit, that name didn’t sound very Jamaican.

12:54
Germ: Time to submit my weekly question that nobody at fangraphs dares answer: who among Cessa, Green, Mitchell, Severino, and Adams will be pitching for the Yanks in August? Moreover, which of these guys, based on your opinion, *should* be starters?

12:55
Eno Sarris: They’re all weird and maybe not starters. You know who I’m going to stake my claim to? Green. I know I messed up on the last Green(e), but this one has more spin, more Ks, and there’s that splitter if he ever throws it.

12:55
Mike: What do you think of Good Beer Hunting? Are you guys going for a similar thing with Octo?

12:56
Eno Sarris: October is going to be more intersectional, introductional, historical, and analytical, but GBH has a big place in the middle.

12:56
The Cincinnati Kid: Using Alan Rickman’s voice during pillow talk is a surefire way to escalate things

12:56
Chael: Best hot sauce on the market?

12:56
Eno Sarris: I’m a big fan of Tabasco Green and Cholula and Sriracha even though I know people call it overrated i don’t care.

12:56
Eno Sarris: Feeling (hot) saucy today I guess.

12:57
Beaf Nughet: Does the spin on Seth Lugo’s curbe make him legit

12:58
Eno Sarris: I traded Charlie Tilson for him! I mean, yeah, I think it’s a legit pitch, and his fastball is fine, and I think that slider is good enough to make him average overall. Who knows if there’s more, but at least he’s in the right park/league to not have a ton of stuff working against him.

12:59
Steve: Tyler O’Neill – up by June and slugging or Quad A for life?

12:59
Eno Sarris: More the former than the latter. Definitely up and slugging, but I wonder about the K/BA.

12:59
Helby Tick’l?: Your sandwiches look disgusting but I like your hair so idk

1:00
Eno Sarris: Some of them are disgusting, I’ll admit that. The good ones… the good ones make me dance around my kitchen.

1:00
BK: Going to Chicago for a Jays series in August – never been to Chicago before – any recommendations?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Yo I’m leading a beer and baseball tour that weekend for Pitch Talks… if you’re on that, I’m the guy taking you guys to bars and sandwich/taco spots.

1:00
Raindog: Trumbo is gonna get more money than Bautista isn’t he? That’s a little crazy, right?

1:01
Eno Sarris: Age tho!

1:01
The Cincinnati Kid: For fantasy purposes, what is the first stat you look at for prospects? HR? OBP? SLG? ISO? wRC+?

1:01
Eno Sarris: K%, ISO.

1:01
Sprinkles are for Winners: Gut check: where does EE land and what kind of deal can he actually pull down at this point?

1:01
Eno Sarris: I’m still thinking he can at least get that 4/80.

1:02
EbenezerBatflip: Clutch is a thing, don’t believe people who say clutch isn’t a thing

1:03
Eno Sarris: I believe that different people react differently to stressful situations. I also believe that major league baseball selects out the people that are really bad at reacting to stressful situations.

1:03
Raindog: You have any fear of Darvish next year, or does half a season of dominance put injury fears to bed?

1:03
Eno Sarris: Should be fine for a couple more seasons.

1:04
Eno Sarris: Thanks to Die Buergermeisterin for continuing the Euro theme

1:04
The Cincinnati Kid: Better MLB uniform mandate: everyone has to wear stockings or everyone has to wear no-finger mittens?

1:05
Eno Sarris: Stockings!

1:05
Townes: Billy Wagner is the most awesome pitcher ever because he was a right-handed LHP. That alone should get him into HOF

1:05
Charlie: I miss beer chats! Mostly just wanted to share that I had a MT Accumulated Knowledge last night and it was great. Best CA version of a NEIPA I’ve had yet.

1:05
Benbadatroto: Do Ottavino and Iglesias close all year? Or do the Rox and Reds screw that up?

1:05
Eno Sarris: They’ll close!

1:05
Curious: What is your process for evaluating command?

1:06
Eno Sarris: Man I don’t know. It’s so hard. I try to watch some, I will look at BB% a little, but not all of course, I take a peak at HR/9.

1:06
Kiner’s Disembodied Hands: Thoughts on Nova back to the Pirates? Looks pretty good for the Buccos, they paid a lot less than I think most were expecting.

1:06
Eno Sarris: Yeah I didn’t like him at $50m but at $26m it’s fine. He could be a really good reliever, too.

1:06
DN: The high leverage thing still seems to be detracting from the purpose of WAR. Wouldn’t you have to account for PH being in high leverage situations too? And then for every AB you’d have to see the situation it takes place in. It becomes WPA, which is a useful stat, but not indicative of true talent level like WAR.

1:07
Eno Sarris: Well WAR is actually probably trying to give you True Value rather than True Talent.

1:07
Raindog: Is Tanaka the scariest pitcher to own in MLB? You might get a Cy Young season, or you might finally learn that yes, you do need tendons in order to pitch.

1:07
Eno Sarris: I asked people in the game what people outside the game might be surprised to find out and one person said “every pitcher is injured.” http://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/18233368/sarris-going-record-baseball-winter-meetings

1:08
EbenezerBatflip: Does anyone in the baseball industry talk about VR experiences? I want to put on a VR headset and have a dugout experience of watching a real-time MLB game. Surely there are some professionals in the industry who are working on or at least considering this type of format, right?

1:08
Eno Sarris: I think there is some talk about doing it for training purposes, and I”m sure someone at MLB office is thinking about it for fans.

1:08
ChicagoCardinal: Eno, cheap rotation can include Hendricks, Shoemaker, Estrada, Folty, Pomeranz, Eickhoff, Tillman, Bundy. Would that be the rough order you’d rank them in?

1:09
Eno Sarris: Hendricks, Shoe, Bundy, Eickhoff, Pom, Estrada, Folty, Tillman.

1:09
Mike: I have an interview for a promotion this afternoon, and I was more nervous about getting food on my suit at lunch than I am about the actual interview.

1:09
Eno Sarris: That spot right next to the zipper has murdered too many of my pants.

1:10
E5: I can pick up Cotton or Guerra in a keep forever, but I’m competitive right now. Oh yea, and it’s a time travel league where we get to use the stats from PREVIOUS YEAR every year.

1:10
Eno Sarris: Those leagues are weird as heck. I’ll still take Cotton.

1:10
DTH: the best non-traditional Christmas movie (non-Die Hard division) is _______________

1:10
Eno Sarris: For us it’s Predator.

1:10
Art Vandelay: Heading up to Truckee today to beat the blizzard tomorrow looks like it’s gonna be a (very) white christmas.

1:10
Eno Sarris: Kids haven’t seen snow yet. Have to remedy that.

1:10
E5: Crude Lude entry

1:11
RotoLando: I visited Belgium expecting good beer on tap everywhere. This is decidedly not the case.

1:11
Eno Sarris: But if you go to the breweries you want, you get world class stuff!

1:11
EbenezerBatflip: Pedroia just posted a 5 WAR season in 2016, can he do that again in his career?

1:11
Eno Sarris: No, injuries.

1:11
RotoLando: I just bought a dozen left shoes on Craigslist. Call me if you’re interested.

EbenezerBatflip: How will teams legally incentivize international prospects to join their team other than $$$? Is it just down to player’s personal team prefrences, regional/weather preferences and the courting process of clubs? Is there any other tangible benefits that can be used to lure prospects? It seems like prospects will have little reason to choose between teams in the future.

1:13
Eno Sarris: Sometimes you can talk about who’s blocking them at the big leagues, but that shouldn’t really effect them. Here’s one I know actually matters: what kind of training do they allow? Pitchers care if they can continue their own training or if the team is super prescriptive about what they can do.

1:13
Fat Kenny G: Did you see that tweet that Bartolo pitched opening day for Turner Field? And now he’s going to be the opening day starter (I think?) for the new stadium. Homeboy outlasted an entire stadium!

1:13
Eno Sarris: Gotta love him despite, well, you know.

1:13
Jaysfan: What would you do if u were atkins/shapiro

1:14
Eno Sarris: Got a window still. Buy the slugger that comes on the shortest contract that’s still out there and can hopefully play the OF.

1:14
Tommy Tutone: When watching a player you haven’t seen much of, how do you know what you’re seeing is real? How do you know it’s not a career day? Or the worst game they’ve had in months?

1:14
Eno Sarris: Gotta watch him again.

1:14
RotoLando: What is your favorite way to proclaim that you are going to use the bathroom?

1:14
Eno Sarris: DADDY HAS TO POOP.

1:14
Mike Soroka: It’s Soroka you goon. SOROKA. Ain’t no T’s in this surname. Eno Sarrits….

1:15
Art Vandelay: Where do you personally draw the line on pouring/not pouring a beer? If you’re at home do you always pour? I’m not *too* ashamed to admit I’ve sapped more than a few Plinys straight out of the bottle.

1:15
Eno Sarris: I always pour. Sorry, call me a snob, but I’m not looking down on your practices. I just like my pint glass too much.

1:15
Ryan: So Trea Turner appears to be a very good fantasy player. People ranking him in the top 20 for next yr: too high, or just right?

1:15
Eno Sarris: They right.

1:15
Snarfle: Are we going to get something like spin rate for bat speed? Seems way easier to measure than spin rate.

1:15
Eno Sarris: True bat speed would be great. I haven’t seen it in the metrics that I’ve seen that aren’t out there yet, though.

1:16
Five tool: Do you think at some point the market rate for $/win will eventually slow down, plateau,or (hopefully) reverse? I don’t want to see a back end starter worth $16 mil+ a year.

1:16
Eno Sarris: Probably will coincide with something happening to TV contracts and the cable industry.

1:16
RotoLando: Stuff: the things things are made of.

1:16
profalankchen: What is a Brett Sour IPA. Had my firsts

1:17
Eno Sarris: Basically a hoppy sour. Shady Oak makes a bunch that are really great, I bet you had that because I think you’re out here.

1:17
Snarfle: Among my superpowers: I’m totally okay with the ends on a loaf of bread and I can do this amazing thing where I roll a roll of masking tape over my fingertips and up my arm.

1:17
Mark: Have you read Jesse Spektor’s article about player and coach skepticism of defensive data? It is very good. It was striking me that the players and coaches seem to put more stock in more directly quantifiable data like speed or precision of route running rather that are components of fielding skill rather than UZR or DRS which try and measure skill itself. To me this seems like a pretty reasonable perspective, and isn’t really all that different from looking at components of pitching like SwStr% or spin rates rather than ERA or FIP which summarize the outcome of those pitches.

1:18
Eno Sarris: Haven’t read yet, but if that’s a reasonable summary of it, yeah it sounds about right. Players I’ve talked to love some of the Statcast data while not loving WAR. “Who hit it further? Who hit it harder?” is the stuff of clubhouse conversations, and now they’ve got measuring sticks.

1:18
Mark: I may have misspelled Spektor (Spector?)

1:19
Eno Sarris: Yes Jesse is a Spector.

1:19
Russell: Can you tell NY sports radio that Gsellman+Wheeler+Bruce =/= McCutchen?

1:19
Eno Sarris: I think Mad Dog was talking that and butchered Gsellman’s name, which, I can’t say much about that.

1:20
Zigs: Enooo. Would love to know of some good Kolsch style ales that can be had in the Bay Area. Fort Point has a pretty good one, do you know of any others?

1:20
Eno Sarris: Dammit you took the one I was going to say. I had an excellent one at Loma Brewing, Kevin Youkilis’ new spot in Los Gatos.

1:22
RotoLando: Who in MLB has the best last name to use as a verb?

1:22
Eno Sarris: Scherzer. Scherz = joke in German.

1:22
Dominik: I “like” Nola and eickhoff too but I see then more as 3, 4 starters (which is nit bad if course). VV is the real deal but can he stay healthy as a starter?

1:22
Eno Sarris: I like Nola more than that. Much more.

1:22
Nick S: You don’t even know Mike Soroka’s last name either!

1:22
Eno Sarris: Crazy life I lead.

1:23
Wyatt: ain’t drinkin nuthin but ice cold budweiser. then again, ain’t never been out the holler ‘fore, so ain’t seen non your fancy pants beers. kilt me a deer once too. ate it wit bud light. mmm good.

1:23
My first lude?: I just did a google search for soiffable. Beergraphs is the only english language stuff on the first page of results. Still don’t know what soiffable means.

1:23
Eno Sarris: soiff = drink in French. So … I guess sessionable / easy to drink but people use that a ton.

1:23
Cleon McGarkus: Pillow talk is after the act of coitus, so I’m curious as to what Alan Rickman’s voice can escalate things to? Sandwiches?

1:23
Snarfle: Like Sesame Street but scary and gritty. The number 9 goes on a rampage, starting bar fights and messing up spreadsheets.

1:23
tommy lasagna, sr.: salad dressing sounds weird, but i don’t know what a good alternative would be. salad liduidy squirt juice?

1:24
Hank: How about Manuel Margot as a fantasy sleeper on the Padres? I see a .270 average with maybe 10-12 HR and 30 SB’s. I also think he could be drafter VERY late

1:24
Eno Sarris: Yeah but some leagues with prospect hounds he’s gone earlier.

1:24
E: Do you ever find that sometimes the simplest sandwich is the best sandwich?

1:25
Eno Sarris: I don’t report those, but I do have my untoasted wheat with sliced cheese and a meat days.

1:25
Matt: Whats your opinion on the Staten Island Yankees failure to rebrand?

1:25
Eno Sarris: They making mistakes.

1:26
Hank: RICH HILL is mad that Raindog didn’t consider him in his “scariest pitcher to own in MLB”. Rich Hill don’t play that. Watch out for a 75 MPH curve ball at the dome son.

1:26
rat tail: W Difo looks to be a good sneaky steals candidate. Can he produce in if called upon due to injury? like, how good is the bat?

1:26
Eno Sarris: Util at best, bat and glove I think.

1:26
Geoff: For the folks curious about why leverage matters for pitchers and not for hitters, I think the difference is that most good hitters are not deployed based on the situation (you might be platooned by starter, but good hitters are always playing), but relievers are deployed situationally.

1:26
Eno Sarris: yeah that’s part of it too.

1:26
IBB: Are the 2016 Giants proof that WAR undervalues closers?

1:26
Eno Sarris: You didn’t need that team to think that WAR isn’t great for relievers.

1:27
Eno Sarris: Try every contract ever signed by a reliever.

1:27
Moltar: The problem with VR is that it’s immersive, not social. Baseball to me is a social experience, I can talk about it with the people I’m watching with or people on social media, or at least supplement my viewing with a second screen. VR doesn’t allow you to do any of that, which is fine for a video game but not for non-interactive sports viewing

1:27
Billy Beane: Who’s the better starter next year, Graveman or Cotton?

1:27
Eno Sarris: Cotton.

1:27
Wigwam: Do you see a fit between Mets and Padres for a trade involving Jankowski and possibly Hand or Buchter with a young pitcher coming back from the Mets?

1:27
Eno Sarris: I guess, but I’m not trading Conforto for that package.

1:27
Coppy: Swanson or Albies, who’s better on defense?

1:28
Eno Sarris: I think the team owning them usually gets it right, especially when they’ve developed both guys in the minors and seen them for a while.

1:28
Guest: Santiago Casilla’s stats weren’t nearly as bad as his number of blown saves would suggest. Any chance a team signs him?

1:28
Eno Sarris: Oh yeah, as long as he’s not your closer, he’s good.

1:28
Tommy Tutone: What do you think about deGrom this year? Something closer to 2015 deGrom or 2016 deGrom?

1:29
Eno Sarris: 2016, I don’t think the full velo is coming back.

1:29
Moltar: Being a Mets fan is great. There was an article on MLBTR this morning saying the White Sox want Conforto for Robertson, and then a counter from a blogger saying they would take Bruce for Robertson. Both of those are o_O

1:29
Scott of Linconshire: I don’t think we give enough credit for the little garbage can right by the bathroom doors. We can wash our hands, dry them off with a paper towel, and then still use that paper towel to open the door. AND! throw it immediately away in that little trash can. That little garbage can is the real hero in life

1:29
Moltar: Best last name to use as a verb will always be Werthquake

1:29
Elven Delivery: Pastoral in Chicago For sandwiches

1:29
Dominik: They actually listed batspeed at the futures game and in some spring training games due to that zepp device (or what it is called) being used. Not sure if measuring batspeed without that device would work well because there is a lot of stuff moving through the zone in a short time.

1:30
Eno Sarris: Yeah it’s possible that even radar has trouble with bat speed because it looks like the arm to the detector. But if we put sensors in the bat, we’re golden.

1:30
E5: Are there similarities in interviewing ball players and brewers?

1:30
Eno Sarris: Longer beards on the brewers, bigger guts.

1:30
Go: What is with your obsession with Cotton? He’s really not that good.

1:31
Eno Sarris: He’s a Marco Estrada clone by fastball and changeup spin, I like his cutter and velo better than Estrada.

1:32
tommy lasagna, sr.: two slices of pizza and a multivitamin. is that a vitameatavegemin?

1:32
Eno Sarris: Seems like a good way to close out. Kids are home and wife already came in once and looked at me. Thanks for hanging out and have a great weekend!!

“BK: Going to Chicago for a Jays series in August – never been to Chicago before – any recommendations?”

For Breweries: Revolution, Goose Island, & Lagunitas.
For Pizza: John’s Pizzaria ~2600 N Western Ave (skip the deep dish places… this is real Chicago thin crust)
For Burgers: Kuma’s
For Hot Dogs: Hot “G” Dogs (owner is former chef of Hot Doug’s)
For Bars or restaurants: there are so many it’s easy enough to stumble into a random place and have a great time

Although do try out Violet Hour, 1520 N Damen
