Eno Sarris: I suppose he could hit closer to 30 than 25, yes. And with the DH, he should be able to play more. But! DHing is a skill, and we’re not quite sure he has it. If he does, it might be a great year. He’s a top-three or four catcher in redrafts either way.

Eno Sarris: Well, the Dyson side at least.

Eno Sarris: He went 3.36 in our mock. I’d have a hard time letting him leave the third round myself. Players that play through injury are underprojected for power, Zimm showed that. So he can probably still .270/18/20+.

Do the Mets need a new SS or can they roll with the 1 WAR+ out of Flores and be fine? Seems like people are just focusing on that one position, which is a detriment to a bunch of teams.

Eno Sarris: To win 81 games, no I don’t think they need a better shortstop than a Herrera/Tejada/Flores scrum. But to be better than that, it’s the most obvious place they can improve.

Eno Sarris: Clippard and… Fuji or Farq.

I know it’s way early, but Arrieta being taken as the 26th SP in NFBC is crazy, right? All signs point to a (mostly) repeatable 2015, right?

Eno Sarris: Yeah my worries with Arrieta are more about long term health throwing all those sliders, especially with his health history. That should ding him a little in redrafts, but not that much. He went 10.116 in ours though, so that’s probably about the same as 26th highest, maybe worse.

Eno Sarris: I know he had thigh issues, but I’m dinging his peak stolen base total from where I thought it was before. .280/35/10 with great OBP and stellar corner O defense.

Eno Sarris: I prefer auctions if everyone has the attentions span and time. It also makes things easier when it comes to dynasties — going forward, the players have a number associated with them. Ottoneu makes keeping track of all that easy.

Do the Nationals plan to see how few games they can win the East with this year?

Eno Sarris: I think the consensus is that they made their team better with Yunel, I was mostly trying to play devil’s advocate in a way. Also, Yunel cost less than Clippard, which is sort of amazing, and may have been important. That I don’t know.

Eno Sarris: If you can keep these guys going forward, I like Fernandez. I think Aroldis probably offers the most 2015 surplus though.

I know that auctions are unpredictable, but going in to an AL/NL-only auction with a $260 budget, what would you say is the optimal amount to allot to SP/RP/Bats?

Eno Sarris: I have extreme confidence in my ability to pick sleeper pitchers, so I’m pushing past 70/30 this year. Maybe I give myself a little money to try and pick a better closer. I keep getting about 1.5 closers out of buying 3 setup men, but those 1.5 closers aren’t always great. I usually only spend around 20 bucks on relievers.

Should throwing to first to hold a runner in any way affect pitch count? What if you do it say 20+ times?

Eno Sarris: Is it max effort? No break on the pitch. I’d say that’s probably something like 10 fastballs. And if you do a pitch count, I think it’s probably good to count fastballs and other pitches separately.

I’m obsessed with the idea that the Cubs should trade for Carlos Gomez. They have the pieces to get it done, but do you think the Brewers think they can contend as currently constructed?

Eno Sarris: The Brewers try to win every season, I don’t think they are into a full rebuild. Then again, they have some holes in places that the Cubs could fill. Problem is: Brewers might like pitching most.

Hey Eno! Arrietta or Smyly in a keeper, and how big is the difference between the two? Also just moved to Germany. I live in the NRW, but need to see the rest of the country in short order. What are your top three German cities to visit, and what beers/breweries are a must?

Eno Sarris: I think they comparable. let me check the mock. I took Smyly 141 (a lot of Steamer pickers in the draft, and I have no idea why Steamer has Smyly so low in IP) and Arrieta 116. I’d put them closer together, but yeah, with NL, and the bigger arsenal, I’ll take Arrieta by a nose.

Eno Sarris: As for Germany, I plead ignorance on current beer scene. I know there’s a great beer bar in Bamberg (Abseits), I love Koestritzer Schwarzbier, and Pinkus Organic Ur-Pils. Don’t like Rauchbier. That might be all I got, except just go to Berlin because Berlin. My friend runs Redwood Bar in Berlin. Tell him I sent you.

eno, when you’re in the habit of only drinking fantastic beers, do you find yourself starting to rate really good beers in the 3 or 3.5 star range just to give yourself more room for differentiation in scoring for truely excellent beers? is this stupid?

Eno Sarris: I am starting to do that, and when I go back and look at old rated beers, almost always revise down. That’s why the five star scale sucks. I want ten stars with half stars. That’s why BAR doesn’t have a ceiling.

Eno Sarris: More people are coming around to this, but I’ll still keep Thor ahead. My reasoning is that Thor’s curve suffered in Vegas altitude, but his change improved. That’s three possibly plus pitches, while Matz is more two and let’s see about the third.

Eno Sarris: Uinta? It’s true, for a state that has onerous beer laws, they make good beer.

When and why did 100 pitches become a magic number? do the warmup pitches between innings factor into that? (I know they’re not “counted” in pitch count but do they figure in?

Eno Sarris: I think it probably had something to do with Rany’s work on Pitcher Abuse Points, which found that pitches past 100 (and really I think it was higher) were more stressful.

Am I crazy to be super down on Kemp next season? In my keeper (12 teams, 12 keepers) I’m thinking I might try to overpay, something like Kemp and Kipnis for Altuve. I’ve already got Stanton and Carlos Gonzalez in the OF, and moving two keepers for one would let me keep someone else like Betances or Gausman. Am I nuts?

Eno Sarris: Not nuts at all. Even with batting average regression, Altuve is 24, and there’s no reason to push his stolen base total down too much just yet. Kemp going to a bad park, even with his up the middle approach, I could see it hurting him. If the team isn’t great, will he Derek Bell it?

Eno Sarris: I would like a shorter, higher AAV contract with him, too, but it’s all just money in the end. In that, however you spread it, still $150m.

Should IFFB% be incorporated into FIP? It seems mostly independent of fielding (since they’re converted to outs 99%+ of the time) and certain pitchers seem to be able to reliably generate them more than average.

Eno Sarris: Better year to year correlation that HRs, which are in FIP. Problem is, nobody is changing FIP. It is what it is. But we can change WAR, and we put pop ups in WAR.

Eno Sarris: Injury projects into injury. But since he’s falling so far, he’s worth a shot. Still had good velocity when he was in there.

TV money (and rev sharing) has flooded the ecosystem such that the upshot of a post-season appearance carries far less financial meaning. The current SABR-mantra is pay for mediocrity and hope the error bar gods smile upon you. This seems like a statistical de-evolution. The Royals WS appearance was estimated at $10M while the cost of a win is $7 and nowhere near enough to justify pushing your error bars up 1.2% (assuming 81 wins). I don’t like it. No question unless you want to speculate on how we make a post-season appearance more lucrative to justify the in-season expense.

Eno Sarris: How about make the wild card game a three-game series, or a five-game series? Wouldn’t that make more money in the postseason, stakes raised? Can achieve this in the schedule by cutting a week of spring training.

Eno Sarris: I drafted Kang. 19.220. I’m very hopeful. Talked to a talent evaluator about him and really like him. There’s a piece in FG+ that’s very positive about him too. I think he could .260/20, and I’ll give him more upside than that, especially in power department. Only problem is, I don’t know where he’ll play.

Eno Sarris: I can’t imagine Lincecum beats Petit out, so a qualified yeah for him. I also noticed that Petit’s third time through the order is worse than most pitchers, probably because hitters start picking up on the deception. So I’d rather have Smyly of the bunch. Porcello second, though I’m not sure where his K% upside is.

Marcus Semien was a bad MLB 2B last year. He was a bad MLB hitter last year. He’s been a marginal hitter anywhere he’s played except the bandboxes in Charlotte, Birmingham and the Cell (.858/.725 H/A in 2014, 1.013/.705 H/A in 2013). What am I missing about this guy? Is he funny or something?

Eno Sarris: Plus walk rates at every stop, and I’ll take the eye test over one-year defensive numbers. Saw him play short in Arizona and came away impressed.

Eno Sarris: wow. Wow. Well, Desmond gets hurt in triple slash and not keeping a pitcher out of this group. I like Yelich, but up against these guys… Donaldson probably the number one third baseman. Posey the number one catcher. As much as I like Dickerson and Brantley…. Posey, with his spray approach, good batting average, and doubles along with the homers, is a great triple-slash catcher. I think I keep him and Donaldson.

Eno Sarris: Has to be major league youth then. Ideally right now it’d be something like Rizzo plus maybe a great young pitcher? Or a worse first baseman… let’s say a Hosmer, but then a young middle infielder and a pitcher too.

The more I read up on him, the more I get excited about Eovaldi in 2015. Am I wrong to feel that way? What do you expect from him this year?

Eno Sarris: I think he should ditch the change and go 4s/SL/CB, has enough Garret Richards in him, but not the same home park. I’m cautiously optimistic and would rate him an okay mixed league bench pick.
