Eno Sarris: Betts last. Dickerson v Calhoun is interesting. Both platoon issues. Calhoun should play all year, Dickerson a little more risky when COL all healthy. But Dickerson better home park, slightly more upside therefore.

Eno Sarris: I have a real hard time with comps because pitchers are beautiful snowflakes. But Q has a nice fastball and curveball. Good command means he gets the most out of otherwise underwhelming cutter and change. Wonder what happens when he drops under 90 mph.

Eno Sarris: I don’t think he’ll rake right away and the team is talking about this being temporary. I only think one of him and Baez will work out. Both have a lot of swing and miss in their games and 50+% bust rates in my mind.

Eno Sarris: I think trading Shields after that last outing makes sense. Probably not going to get much for Yordano with injury scares and all that. I like the trio enough in general though.

Eno Sarris: And, for what it’s worth, ALL of the teams where I considered trading pitching because I had surplus are now just barely holding on.

Eno Sarris: In retrospect, maybe moving back to his old leg kick was a bad idea. But Ks are same as ever and I think he’ll finish the season at his near-customary .260/15/20.

Eno Sarris: I just looked at his hard-hit percentage, and if you don’t look at liners — if you look at hard hit % of all balls in play — he’s the same as last year. So he’s still hitting ball hard. I expect it’s a blip. He’s a good buy-low.

I’m not sure exactly how to go about it, but age, injury history, performance history etc to establish a players risk. I know Zimm is already doing stuff with injo risk.

Eno Sarris: Japanese pitchers in Japan have TJ half as much as they do in America. Less than half. Our pitchers low through innings too (194 in Washington this year). Our pitchers pitch pitch year round from an early age. Japan? Give their pitchers more rest between starts, and do more warm-up, warm-down stuff than ours.

The reason the TJ rate in Japan has historically been so low: Pitchers are expected to pitch through pain and soreness far, far more than in the US. Pitchers just pitch through the pain due to the stigma attached to admitting to injury, which means they just get washed out of the league rather than have TJ. Far too many solid pitchers end up out of baseball (or in one of the corporate leagues). That said: TJs are waaaay way up in Japan: They’ve had more in the last four years than the previous 20 combined.

Eno Sarris: I’ll have to look at the survivor bias, but even with TJs being up, they’re less than 50% American number. I can’t believe that survivor bias explains it all.

Eno Sarris: LD% might be the worst, most sneaky, most misleading stat we carry. It’s not sticky, ever, and it’s just so terrible.

Eno Sarris: That said, a guy with no change may be a true talent 15% HR/FB guy, especially in NYY, so that’s worth thinking about. Could have a 3.5 xFIP and a 4+ ERA.
