eno, great article on polanco…i read this stat recently: olanco is batting .294/.400/.455 in at-bats where the first pitch is a ball, and he is batting .185/.222/.246 in at-bats where he sees a first pitch strike. At this stage, Polanco simply cannot afford to get behind in the count this consistently.

Eno Sarris: The league split on those is pretty drastic, too, though. I wish Polanco could Reddick, but even though I called the article about Reddick “The Simplicity,” it’s not that easy for a young guy to just start spitting on that outside pitch.

Eno Sarris: I wouldn’t be surprised if another injury derails him right in the middle of his best stretch, I wouldn’t sink many resources into his future. I’m cautiously holding, but not buying.

Are you high or low on Carlos Rodon’s ROS projections?

Eno Sarris: I didn’t necessarily think he would show command that was this poor, but the projection systems believe it will be. I’d like another few starts before I totally believe it, but you need to have plus command if you don’t have a changeup from the left side, IMO.

Has your outlook on Mike Montgomery’s ceiling changed ffollowing the last two outings? What’s resonable to expect moving forward. Does he have the makeup and stuff to be a #2? #3?

Eno Sarris: His changeup is legit and was always. His curve is good/average to better. Has there been a velocity boost? Because he’s now at average or better velocity, and the fastballs are looking decent. I’m buying, especially in that park.

Eno Sarris: Melancon is slowly pushing that velocity up, surprisingly, and has been effective throughout. But I still think he’s allowing too many balls in play for a closer and that Caminero has like a 10% chance of closing this year still.

Eno Sarris: He’s still pulling the ball as much as he did in his breakout year, and the ISO is still ahead of career level. I wouldn’t be surprised if he pushes the slugging to more of a .450/.460 level, but we’re not talking a big deal here. Just a really good player who will hit 10-15 homers annually.

Eno Sarris: This probably deserves more study, but I’ve read some, and I’ve analyzed a lot of these guys in different moments, and I’ll sadly pick up Motte because he got the last one, but I believe mostly in Strop of the group, because he has one of the best sliders in the game, velocity, and the Ks.

Eno Sarris: I can’t figure it out either really. It’s all vertical, with very little side-to-side movement, which usually gets you the grounders. If he can push the grounder rate to 55%, he can live with 5-6 K9 maybe, but he’s not really doing that right now.

How much prep work do you put into your player interviews? Do unexpected things come up organically?

Eno Sarris: I want to do much more. But life is nuts, and I have tons of crap to do. I spend a couple hours prepping for the clubhouse, but you really could prep forever. Definitely long threads come from little things. Like I just asked a reliever on the Mariners why his four-seam had so much cut and then I discovered the off-set four-seam cut fastball and that unraveled the difference between the risky cutter and the less risky cut fastball.

What do you do in leagues where you have multiple players who are not active? This is a long-term dynasty to narrow it down.

Eno Sarris: A short deadline in the offseason for people to check back in. October 15, tell me you’re in! Hopefully they aren’t in. Replace quickly with vetted people that are interested.

I find it interesting with the Dipoto thing coming out, lots of sources claiming that most of the big moves the Angels made (Napoli, Hamilton, Wilson) were not even made by Dipoto, but by Moreno. Do you think that’s true, or is Dipoto trying to pad his resume a little?

Eno Sarris: I think this sort of thing is true and is very hard to uncover. David Wright, not trading Jose Reyes… Granderson? I’d say at least two of these three were done by the Wilpons.

Eno Sarris: I don’t actually know how the technology is different, but it is, at least in some ways, slightly more effective than PITCHf/x. It can observe the ball leaving the hand quicker, and it can observe spin rate without calculating it, for two.

Eno Sarris: All I’m saying about Ray is this: His best non fastball is supposed to be the change, but his change has less horizontal movement, less vertical movement, and less velocity gap to his fastball than your average changeup, and all of those things are even worse if you compare them to lefty changeups. Also, it gets half the whiffs of an average changeup. Also, he has bad command.

Eno Sarris: Looks like a plus changeup, a usable/average slider, and decent velocity and command. The only thing I don’t get is that he’s put up some mediocre minor league numbers.

Do you know of any change in approach from Jesse Hahn? His K% and SwStr% are way down, but he’s generating a lot of weak contact and remains a productive pitcher.

Eno Sarris: Yeah he’s throwing that changeup a ton more, and it’s getting a lot of grounders but not a ton of whiffs. He tells me the whiffs are coming, but I still like him as a safe pitcher.

Eno Sarris: It’s *basically* selling out for power. I think you have to at least start out thinking you’ll spray the ball and hit to every field for power. Because the very very very best do that. But if you figure out you’re not going to be that guy, you might as well give this a shot. As Charlie Blackmon told me last night, “Pulling the ball is the best way to get hits because you hit the ball harder.”

Eno Sarris: Yeah I think they lose value at the top of the rankings. But Revere lives near the back of the rankings, and he might actually have more value. think of a Revere/Carter platoon in your util. You’d have a ton of flexibility to change course late in the week.

Eno Sarris: Razor thin margin there. Too easy to lose. I favor punting one category, and usually saves or steals since they are the least correlated with other stats.

Eno Sarris: The news is terrible. He said he fixed his slider on rehab, and it’s changed a bit, and it’s getting 4% whiffs now. It used to be his best pitch once upon a time and it’s getting 4% whiffs now.

Can Pitch Type Values be predictive for hitter/pitcher matchups? i.e. pitcher throws a lot of changeups, Trout kills changeups, Trout does well.

Eno Sarris: Those values are a little scary to use for me. Because they only record what happened on that pitch, and they ignore what happened before. So Dickey’s pitch type value on the fastball is high, because of his knuckler. But for hitters, I think it’s a decent way to scan the FG page and get a good sense of what might happen. WAY better than batter v pitcher.

Eno Sarris: Him and Odor just outside the top five. Well let me look at consensus ranks. Altuve, Kipnis, Gordon, (Betts), Dozier, Kinsler, Wong … Okay now it’s a scrum for Odor, Travis, Murphy, Rendon, Pedroia. Without really sitting down with this, that feels like a decent ranking.
