Eno Sarris: Asked him about his two-strike approach and he said he was trying stuff and nothing had clicked. I think that’s a fairly bad sign and I’ll put his bust rate at 80+%. But! He probably still has a 5% or so superior rate, because if he does put it together, I believe in his power, and think he can even stick at second.

Eric: I hope you are very wrong that Josh Reddick could net Bellinger+. That would be an objectively horrible trade for the Dodgers’ present and future

Eno Sarris: Well, I think the trade would be Hill and Reddick together, and I thought Bellinger was further down the prospect list, so I probably am wrong.

Eno Sarris: Minor league pay scale, open, honest, intelligent discussion of why the home runs are up.

Brad: Did you laugh inside your head, when Shark told you he gets worried about paying his mortgage when trade talks occur?

Eno Sarris: He said that married people had to think about mortgages, and not paying them, more like selling/buying houses and transferring things. It doesn’t sound like a big deal, but I sensed real struggle and I think even pain when talking to Jed Lowrie about the decision to leave his wife and child in Houston because they had roots and a house and friends there.

Eno Sarris: Straight fastball with mediocre command, bad change. When he fills up the zone with 99, he’s fine.

Eno Sarris: Half Acre is great, but mostly because they make some really nice collaborations, plus Half Acre is a desert island beer. Off Color is good!

Derrick: Buster Olney has been pretty vocal recently about the Pirates shopping Melancon. While they are fighting for a wild card spot, it’s seems like one of those moves that really wouldn’t have much of an impact on that pursuit, and could land them a decent prospect. Would you deal him if you’re Neal Huntington, especially with how inflated the closer market is?

Eno Sarris: I’m sure he has sources. My sense is they won’t trade him.

Kyle: When a Lucas Harrell trade gets a decent amount of media coverage, you know it’s a bad trade deadline.

Rob: McCullers can now throw strikes with his fastball (sinker?). Does he have a legitimate ace ceiling?

Eno Sarris: Always had ace ceiling. Has ace stuff, question is command and health.

Alex : Eno, I’m really struggling to figure this out. Who do you value more next year: Hosmer or Odor? Mazara or Marcell Ozuna?

Eno Sarris: Odor, Ozuna. Though I love love Mazara.

EC: Nats seem poised to get a RP. Who is it? David Robertson? And what happens to Papelbon?

Eno Sarris: Huh, yeah they seem like the team to bring in an established closer type, otherwise just go to Kelley and Treinen. Only established guy on block is DRob or Madson, A’s might want more for cheap Madson. Jeffress expensive and not established ?. Melancon? I guess Robertson and Pap goes to seventh, works his way back to 8/9.

Da Raiders: Any reason to hold Chen on my DL?

Eno Sarris: Not in a 12-teamer I guess. I still have hope he finds the popups.

Josh: Is a turnaround coming for Bryce this year? Would you try to trade him for a Bryant or Rizzo type?

Eno Sarris: I think he’ll be fine, but surely the other two guys are safer if you can actually get them.

JD: How likely is it that cubs deal jorge soler?

Eno Sarris: If they get a top-line starter, seems like he’ll be the guy to go. Still toolsy enough to attract suitors.

Josh: listening to you on 670 the Score right now (11:55 AM EST)… busy day… just wanted to throw out a great idea I got from Caitlin Sweica (BPwrigleyville contributor) for those of us who have moral qualms with with Chapman… and that is to donate to a domestic violence charity relative to Chapman’s performance… personally I am donating $10 for every save and $1 for every K… this seems like a good way to align fandom and personal beliefs so thought I’d share.

natsfan: When do you bail and start the rebuild? I am in a 7 team moshpit, 5 1/2 points seperating 1st and 7th. I was unable to secure any talent when the last team tanked. I have roads to the top but it seems I need everything to break nearly perfectly for the next two months

Eno Sarris: If you do rebuild, you want to be one of the first, not one of the last. I’d send out feelers now.

Big Tall T: Eno! Do you find MLB players have a higher jerk% than the normal population due to all the attention they have received throughout their life …or is the ratio pretty similar to the rest of us schmos?

Eno Sarris: You know the weird thing? I mostly hang with people at baseball events or in clubhouses or concerts so… they’d have the highest jerk% in that grouping, but that’s a bit unfair. I don’t get the sense that it’s crazier than the outside world, but maybe I’m out of touch with the outside world.

ASalas: Who closes if the trade goes through? Jansen or Wade Davis?

Eno Sarris: Jansen. I think they’ll go with the in-house hometown guy.

Kevin: What do you like in Jordan Zimmermann and Eovaldi that places them above Drew Pomeranz and Lance McCullers in your 2nd half SP Rankings?

Eno Sarris: If I redid them now, McCullers would be tops, Zimmermann and his command/feel for pitching second. Eo and Pom pretty close, Pomeranz makes me nervous with a 90 mph fastball in the ALE in those ballparks, Eo’s HR problem calming down.

Eno Sarris: Looking for a third pitch, oldest story in the book. Problem for me is I’m not sure which is his second pitch.

Kevin: As someone who has been following the Pirates system for years, it often seems like our prospects developing a change-up has been that last hump before they’re deemed major league ready. My question is, is this something that might just be an organization development specific thing or is that a pretty common barrier for a lot of pitchers, and if so, why is that?

Eno Sarris: It’s hard for a breaking ball guy to learn a change and vice versa, it’s just something about mechanics. To me, the knuckle curve and the split finger are the answers to that question, because they are thrown like fastballs, but the splitter makes teams nervous.

kris: Folty is the next Eovaldi, right

Eno Sarris: Surprised that after a stretch of 22% swinging strikes in the minors that he didn’t get a lot of whiffs in first start. Still, he has three good pitches. Good velocity. Has improved command.

Eno Sarris: No! But there’s a ‘it’s not your life’ thing with baseball players, so I think they’d shrug and try to advocate for change somehow that didn’t get them in trouble.

NYTT: How do you get that Folty’s fastball is straight? The movements numbers on both his 4 seam and 2 seam say otherwise, don’t they?

Eno Sarris: His four seam numbers are almost exactly average, which is straighter than deviating from average. Sinker’s good, gives up fewer homers, but he trusts it less and it’s a strike less often.

Larry Bernandez: I think if you are unsure if you are a buyer or a seller, you’re probably a seller

Eno Sarris: And yet, the thing that gets butts in seats is sustained winning. So selling too much actually has consequences.

Eno Sarris: I forget where Jeff Sullivan pitched, but I know that Brad Johnson still plays in one of those fast-pitch baseball adult leagues! I peaked in JV, when I went 3-10 in a 10-game season with three drag bunts.

mtsw: If there’s any reason baseball players display a high jerk% it’s because a huge fraction of their interactions with strangers are with autograph hounds pestering them to sign memorabilia they can sell to make a buck. Don’t blame them for putting a guard up.

Ben: Maybe I’m just out of touch with society, but I’ve never heard anyone complain about length of baseball games, or “pace of play” except for like 19 inning games. Is Manfred trying to fix a problem that doesn’t exist? All these rule change propositions are just preposterous.

Eno Sarris: It’s possible that the ‘swing voters’ that are picking between sports care, but what are you watching right now if not baseball? Is soccer’s pace so blindingly fast?

Brad: as for sale, he said the collar was going to alter his mechanics which could lead to injury. I think he was wrong to cut up the jerseys but couldn’t the sox pitched him on next day instead of being we are the boss do what we say?

Eno Sarris: I side mostly with Sale. He’s the frigging franchise. He complained earlier. You couldn’t do the shirt on another day?

Oliver: I want to love Paxton. But man can he just get lit up at times. Why?

Eno Sarris: I think this will also limit his trade value. I don’t get it. Maybe he’s struggling to find that new arm slot.

Pie: How could you not pick Daniel Day Lewis as Eno Sarris?

Eno Sarris: Well, other than the fact that he doesn’t look anything like me, sure!

Greg: What are your thoughts on Dahl in Colorado? Seems they intend to play him, trades be damned.

Eno Sarris: Yah he’s here and playing and is exciting!

John Olerud: In the podcasts this year, both Paul Sporer and you have hinted at your desire to be more open to gambling on hot streaks over struggling/middling players, which I totally understand and have also tried to be more open too. In fact, the industry as a whole seems to be leaning more this way. That said, I’m wondering if this trend is skewing too far the other way now. Case in point, your suggestion two podcasts ago of possibly swapping Naquin for a guy like Calhoun. I see the argument for doing this, but really? I mean, Naquin is hot, but his K%, BABIP and MiLB track record seem to suggest that this is highly unsustainable, whereas I feel Calhoun is a proven Fantasy asset at this point. And this is just one of several similar examples I’ve heard discussed on the podcast. Again, is it possible that you’re starting to skew too far in the other direction and gambling too much now as opposed to too little before?

Eno Sarris: Didn’t I say no? I had the chance, on air, and chose to keep Calhoun. I’ve been yelled at for being too patient, so I don’t think I personally have gone too far. I do think some have.

pw: think trevor story makes it to 40? and will he be a 25+ home run for years to come? even with that dreadful swing and miss rate

Eno Sarris: See his whiff rate is two percentage points better than Baez’s! Weird, huh? Yeah I think he gets to 40 and is a perennial 30 guy.

Eno Sarris: Spin, velo, arm slot, all these things have to come together, spin alone is not everything. But he also had to start throwing the slider more to make it all work.

Eno Sarris: Keeping the walk rate down. Yeah, he’s way better than I thought he’d be.

Eno Sarris: Uh the second part hard. I like Ginger Man but I think it was expensive. Maybe Rattle n Hum was cheaper? Could just go to Brooklyn and drink Threes.

Eno Sarris: I do not see that. I answer maybe 10% of the questions though, it’s crowded.

Eno Sarris: Oh the Growlerwerks pressurized growler! was great, had unflat beer a day after I opened the growler. Its pricey and irrelevant for people that can either kill a growler by themselves in one day or have more help than I do. But for those that find they leave 1/4 or more in the growler at the end of the day, it’s p cool.

The Cincinnati Kid: Shouldn’t the pace of games vs. fringe fans argument really be decided by actual dollars? I mean, that’s REALLY what Manfred and the owners care about, and so losing a commercial break or two per game vs. gaining more eyes or butts in the seats is the question.

Eno Sarris: Yeah that’s the real pace of play thing that’s not talked about. Cut an ad and suddenly things pick up.

Eno Sarris: I think he’s trying to be someone he’s not. He’s a ground-ball, low-ball line drive guy, and he’s swinging at pitches high in the zone while also trying to add loft to his swing. All of the pop-ups and lazy flies.

Eno Sarris: yes

Eno Sarris: Semien. Really like the adjustments he’s made in season to be able to pull for power and push for BA.

benj: Raisel Iglesias is playing a weird role for the Reds right now, sort of a non-fireman long reliever. Is this the long term plan for him? Do they still see him as a starter?

Eno Sarris: Yeah they straddling the line and trying to up the innings while not starting, so this is what they are doing.
