FanGraphs Changelog: App Leaderboard Updates and Lab Additions

Welcome to the latest FanGraphs Changelog, where we update you on some of the recent improvements we’ve made to the site as we work to build a better FanGraphs.

First, here are some important updates we’ve already announced over the past month, in case you missed them:

We’ve worked hard to get our tools updated for the new strike zone and the ABS challenge system. In addition to the new plate discipline metrics added to player page season stats and leaderboards, those stats were also added to the game logs and spark graphs cards. To see how successful players have been when they make ABS challenges, we added an ABS Challenges leaderboard.

We also made a significant update to the FanGraphs mobile app, which can be download here: App Store (iOS) or Play Store (Android).

  • We’ve added the full Major League Leaderboards to the app, including your custom reports. The custom report features are the same on the app as they are on the website. You have to be a FanGraphs Member to have more than 10 player or custom stat columns:
  • You can also set the default for all leaderboards in the app to show you the left edge of the data grid or the right edge. We put some of the most important stats on the right side and default sort data grids by the right column on the website, so we are giving users the option to change this. This can be found under More >> App Settings:
  • We also updated the RosterResource Closer Depth Charts in the app to reflect the updates on the site:

Speaking of RosterResource, the Closer Depth Charts now have more stats:

  • The Results section has most of the stats that were previously there, and we’ve added SwStr%, K%, BB%, Shutdowns, and Meltdowns.
  • The Arsenal section has individual pitch metrics, including Stuff+.
  • We also added the number of pitches thrown and innings pitched over the last six days for each pitcher.
  • There’s now a tooltip that has game-level information including innings pitched, total batters faced, innings appeared in, and leverage when the pitcher entered game.

We also made a small Member update. You are now able to download or copy a .png image of many of our graphs and charts, so you no longer have to screenshot them:

Thanks for all the updates, especially on the mobile app. I really like this idea of sharing a changelog with all the updates in one post. Hope to see that more often.

You know what a great feature would be? Live tracking of minor league stats for those who want to track how their dynasty league prospects are doing. There are two products I know of. There is this product from MLB called the Prospect Tracker. It’s incredibly buggy these days, you basically can’t load players anymore – but had a nice clean interface and was super easy to view day to day. You could sort by total bases and easily see who had done stuff

https://www.mlb.com/prospects/stats/player-tracker

The other product is called MILB tracker, its also free. You can easily add players and the site is not buggy at all, it’s very easy to add and subtract players from a watchlist. . The only issue is that the display is kind of crappy. You can’t sort by total bases and it’s hard to view on a phone.

That link is here

https://milbtracker.com/hitter-stats

Anyway, it would be amazing if you guys could build something that has a clean display like the first one with all the useability of the second one. Would be a really nice addition for deep dynasty members.

I didn’t know now of those sites but that seems like an interesting request. I’m not a fantasy baseball player and adding on maybe another request but the ability to see the leaderboards for the minors would be nice including custom support. I often want to see how the minor league players in an org are doing in a variety of stats like K%, BB%, minors stacast, etc and I don’t have a way to access that info as FG is the only place that shows some stats but to get that info I have to open each player one by one which makes it hard to compare.

Oh I just somehow missed this in the site as what I wanted is there. I’ve been using the site for years and keep finding new things.

Actually there is something in addition to ask. Basic stats and advanced are supported on the custom view, but could we also get the statcast data as well? I would like a dashboard so I can evaluate all prospects in the org on their performance and metrics if available in one place.

What is happening to the Teams pages that show the basic team overview like schedule, standings, and stats? These pages say deprecated. They are probably my most used page on the site. Will there be a replacement of some form?

Are there plans to add the statcast stats for the Florida State League players. The raw data is available for the league, but FG only shows AAA data like EV, swing decisions, etc and not for the FSL.

Would EV90 also be something we could get added to all the minors player pages that have statcast data? I much prefer this over both EV and max EV to get an idea of a players underlying power.

Sorry for so many requests. I use the site a lot and I haven’t had a good place to put random questions/ requests and seeing an update like this seemed like the perfect place. Keep up the great work as the sun is easily worth every penny!
