How Good Were The 2014 Giants?
The World Series is over, and though the San Francisco Giants have nailed down their third championship in the last five seasons, there is seemingly no time to savor the accomplishment. Qualifying offers are being extended, the first offseason transactions have begun to trickle across the wire, and hot stove season will soon begin in earnest. This week, however, let’s take one last look at the two World Series participants from a top-sided, macro perspective. How good were the Giants and the Royals, in various aspects of the game? Today, let’s take a look at the champion Giants.
Much has been made of the fact that the 2014 World Series not only pitted two wild card clubs against one another, but two sub-90 win wild cards. On one hand, 162 games is the longest season among the four major sports leagues, and one would think that such an endurance test would weed out potential pretenders to the throne. On the other hand, a whole lot of randomness remains in play, even over the span of 162 games.
Utilizing batted ball data, one can calculate the MLB average AVG and SLG for various exit speeds and angles. Throughout the season, I have attempted to evaluate individual players using such data, taking their actual BIP information and applying it to such averages to see how players might perform in a totally neutral environment. Today, let’s do this on a team-wide basis, and separate context from the Giants’ true offensive, pitching and defensive talent, and see whether their 88-74 record is a fair approximation of their cumulative ability.
First, let’s look at the Giants’ offense. Below is their team plate appearance frequency data:

First off, I have decided not to include percentile rank data, which I use for individual players, for team-wide analysis. There are hundreds of players, but only 30 clubs, and it just isn’t as valuable. The frequency data doesn’t tell us all that much – we can see that the Giants don’t walk all that much, don’t hit many popups, and have a slight fly ball tendency as a club. We’ll have to rely on their production by BIP type data to learn what makes their offense tick.

There’s some interesting data here, especially in the very first line item. The Giants batted only .278 AVG-.679 SLG on fly balls this season, for an actual REL PRD of 97. MLB hitters batted .275 AVG-.703 SLG on fly balls in 2014. The Giants’ actual fly ball production was just 3% below MLB average despite the fact that they played their home games in AT&T Park, the second most pitcher-friendly park in baseball both overall (84.7 park factor) and with respect to fly balls (67.3 park factor). Adjustment for context boosts the Giants’ ADJ PRD on fly balls way up to 123, in the upper tier of MLB clubs.
The Giants are in the league average range with regard to production from all other BIP types, before and after adjustment for context. After the K’s and BB’s are added back, the Giants go from having a 99 REL PRD – 1% below league average offensive production without contextual adjustment – to 104 ADJ PRD afterward. The 2014 Giants were an above average offensive club, largely due to their ability to hit the ball hard in the air without having the high K and popup rates that usually accompany power in the air.
It makes sense – Buster Posey, especially, and Hunter Pence, Michael Morse and even Pablo Sandoval, to somewhat lesser extents, all hit the ball harder than MLB average in the air, and none are big popup or K guys. When you pile enough of those guys on one club, it begins to take on their characteristics as a whole. Their homer totals ranged from 16 to 22, but would have been substantially higher in most other offensive environments. The Giants have pieced together a relatively low risk, moderate upside offense whose proficiency is obscured by the extremely pitcher-friendly nature of their home park.
How about the pitching? Again, let’s take a peek at their plate appearance frequency and production by BIP type data to get a better feel. First, the frequency info:

There are a couple of notable items here. The Giants don’t walk people (86 compared to MLB average of 100), don’t induce many popups (69), but have a fairly high ground ball rate (105). While Madison Bumgarner is their clear and unquestioned ace, on the whole the Giants’ staff seemed to take on the personality of their World Series Game 7 starter, Tim Hudson. Next, the production by BIP type info:

The one standout piece of information here is on the ground ball line item. The Giants allowed very meager production on ground balls this season – .214 AVG-.233 SLG compared to an MLB average of .245 AVG-.267 SLG. After adjustment for context, it becomes apparent that this variance is attributable not to the Giants’ pitchers, but to their infield defense. The Giants’ pitchers also benefit to some extent from the fly ball-killing nature of AT&T Park, as their 99 REL PRD on fly balls is boosted to a 107 ADJ PRD after contextual adjustment.
Overall, the Giants’ pitching, with an actual ERA of 3.50, appears to well better than MLB average. After adjustment for context, their “tru” ERA of 3.66 is much closer to MLB average. Yes, despite the presence of one of the best, most durable starting pitchers in the game in Bumgarner, the Giants’ pitching is very close to MLB average overall. This perhaps isn’t that surprising, considering that they were hard-pressed to get even three credible innings from any of their other starters as the postseason came to a close. Their bullpen was strong in the front – Yusmeiro Petit – and in the back – Santiago Casilla, Jeremy Affeldt, Sergio Romo – but had some holes in between. Pitching is where the Giants need to focus their disposable dollars this offseason.
How about the defense? Again utilizing granular batted ball data, I have established a method to evaluate team defense, from a big-picture macro perspective, rather than the play-by-play micro perspective that methods such as DRS and UZR utilize. Simply compare each team’s offensive and defensive actual and projected AVG and SLG – what each team “should” have hit/allowed based on the speed/exit angle mix of all balls in play (excluding home runs), and convert those actual and projected events to run values. You are basically comparing each team’s defense to that of their opponents over 162 games. If a team’s defense was exactly as good as their opponents’ over 162 games, their team defensive multiplier would be 100. Better than average defenses have scores under 100, below average team defenses have scores over 100. How did the Giants fare in 2014?

First of all, the Giants’ 95.7 overall defensive multiplier places them safely among the top quarter of MLB defenses. Most importantly, their 88.2 ground ball multiplier is exceptional – this is what enabled their grounder-generating staff to hold opponents to well below MLB average production on all of those grounders, saving a bunch of runs on the whole. While UZR, DRS and other advanced defensive metrics do a very good job of evaluating individual defense, a top-sided method such as this does a good job of grading team defense. The Giants overall team defense surged in the second half, as the injuries to Michael Morse and Angel Pagan turned a subpar outfield defense into an above average one, and the promotion of Joe Panik turned a good infield defense into an extremely good one.
Putting it all together, you have a solidly above average offensive and defensive club, with very slightly above MLB average pitching. Not too many clubs are above average in all of the major phases of the game. Convert everything in the above tables to run values, apply their defensive multiplier, and do some final Pythagorean magic, and the 2014 Giants are a 90-win club, just a tad better than their actual 88-74 mark. Calculating a team’s projected record using this method actually yields very similar results to the Pythag approach, with only a couple of clubs per season breaking materially out of their projected win total range. More on one such club later this week.
What does this method tell us about the Giants going forward? Well, they probably shouldn’t break the bank on Pablo Sandoval if it’s going to drain dollars away from their greatest need – starting pitching. Of course, winning titles increases revenue streams, so it’s possible they can keep their incumbent third baseman while still going hard after pitching upgrades. Still, they might be able to get 80-90% of Sandoval’s value while spending 50-60% of the annual salary and 25-30% of the long-term salary guarantee by pursuing a different 3B target, enabling them to get one of the bigger pitching fish on the market.
At this point, however, I’m inclined to give the Giants the benefit of the doubt on all fronts. They have put together a winning core with a strong cumulative risk/reward ratio, and have made quality adjustments on the fly. Brian Sabean, Bruce Bochy and their entire staff deserve much credit. 2015 is an odd-numbered year, so recent history suggests a temporary step backward, but this club’s combination of talent, cash and organizational consistency from the top down suggests that they will make the decisions necessary to keep them in the postseason discussion for the foreseeable future.
This article proves you can say just as little with advanced statistics as without them.

Solid work, Tony. One observation, and just one criticism.
On the first: It doesn’t particularly distinguish the Giants, but the team it started the season with was different from the team it finished with. 2B got the major attention: Hicks (Scutaro had a demitasse), thru ‘others’, to Panik; but mid-IF defense didn’t suffer thru that, particularly since the Uggla experiment ended QUICK. What changed was ABs, way better: Panik proved been-than-able at working pitchers and contact, so by August they no longer were compelled to bat Pence near the top, which ‘magically’ added power to the middle. In CF, a lot was made of SF’s WLPct with Pagan starting, but due mostly to their big early start; once it was clear Blanco had CF, not only did he play his best but defense there improved, as we’d expect. There was a hole in no adequate 4th OFer, but it mostly didn’t come up, as Blanco and Pence never were injured, otherwise because the priority for 4th OF isn’t near that for starters and the difference (Colvin, Ishikawa, Perez) turned out not much, and, finally, it’s LF for crying out loud.
And here’s a mostly-overlooked facotr: it’s probably somewhere in the numbers, but the Giants definitely suffered from Morse’ defense, tho more in LF than at 1B – until the injury to his oblique, whereupon he no longer played in the field anywhere. But by happenstance the teams they happened to play all during that time, thru to the end, turned Morse’s unavailability into a positive, or something like. SF plays their home games in the 7th largest park in MLB, half all games; #2 biggest park, KC; #5, St. Louis; #10, Pittsburgh; the Nats play in THE most neutral park; PLUS the Giants spent most of September at home or in #11, SD; #5, AZ; or #1, Coors Field. SF played 44 of their last 52 games (85%) in larger parks, 88% in larger or neutral parks. Then, whimsy: they could only DH Morse in 4 games, and otherwise he was only available for PH service against the Cardinals. He PH against St. Louis, including the game-tie dinger in Game 5, and DH’d 4 times against KC, including the winning RBI in Game 7. Happenstance + whimsy.
On the criticism front: the Giants’ SP situation after MadBum may not be QUITE so pressing as you think. Matt Cain pitched broken, and not well, with his usual bad luck (2-7 off 15 starts, 7 quality & 1.25 WHIP = no run support, even at an ERA of 4.2). He’s due back from elbow surgery, but not for Tommy John or worse: for bone chips, something not abnormal or so risky for 30-year-old pitchers. Hudson’s signed, so that’s ~ 100 starts accounted for, before we consider Lincecum, Peavy, Vogelsong or arms from their minor league system (including Crick, 22, ready if he solves walks, and Not-Charlton Heston).
So the answer to the question in the article title is: the Giants were above average. A slightly above average team was crowned the best team in the world.
Crowned World Series champion. There’s no illusion that the post-season winner is the “best” team out there. Otherwise we’d have 30 teams playing the same balanced schedules, and the team with the most wins is declared “the best”.
I think MLB right now is actually at a good balance between the size of the post-season field and the reward for excelling in the regular season. Too few teams in the post-season reduces the number of meaningful regular-season games overall, while too many post-season teams reduces HOW meaningful it is to reach the post-season.

I don’t think I would characterize a team with “solidly above average” hitting & fielding and “slightly above average” pitching to be “slightly above average” overall, as you describe it.
A team that is strong in two categories and has no weaknesses is usually going to be a good team

I remember watching “Clubhouse Confidential” sometime last year and Brian Kenney had Bill James on for an interview. What I most remember is Bill James saying (paraphrasing) “If every player on your team performed at an average level, said team would be the absolute best.” Maybe someone else can elaborate better than I can, but I’d say the Giants fit that mold.

Jeff Sullivan came in, Kenney asked him about Brian Sabean – top 5 in the game in-game and outside the top-ten out-game and Sullivan… brought up Barry Zito and Aaron Rowand. Because he’s always signing old vets.

Yes, slightly above average in the regular season. Come the playoffs, the emphasis is on the top of the starters, the defense and the bullpen for half the innings. For the other half, and this is perhaps MHO, the emphasis is on bad ball hitters, and “manufacturing runs” in low scoring games. With the help of Bochy’s managing, the G excel at all these.
Yes, if playoff series were 160 games each, we would often crown the “best” team. As it is, the current rules favor teams who get into the playoffs as often as possible, and who are versatile, resilient and well managed. Luck also matters IMHO. There was Conrad in 2010, Rolen in 2012 (plus Cueto’s injury). Resiliency is best described by having Vogelsong go 3-0, and Zito 2-0, in 2012.
This is a good point. The rotation shrinks come October, so the Giants were able to limit the exposure of their weaker back-end starters and bullpen guys. They had Tim Lincecum on the roster for the whole playoffs and he saw very little action, none of it high leverage. They carried their above average offense/defense with them along with their strong top-end pitching.
Luck (or random events) matters a lot. More than versatility, resiliency or how well managed the club is.
Short series ANYTHING can happen. Take the Rangers. They were awful (414 winning %). Arguably the worst team in baseball last year. They happened to play 2 of the better teams in the AL last year a combined total of 38 games. These two teams had a composite winning % of 540 and outscored their opponents by 237 runs (A’s were 1st in baseball with +157 and the Mariners were 7th in baseball with +80). The Rangers were outscored by a league worst -136 runs.
So what happened in those 38 games? It should be a blood bath that favored the Mariners and A’s. Instead, the Rangers won 20 and lost 18. If you didn’t have the context of the rest of the season one could easily make the argument that the Rangers were a better team in 2014 than either the A’s or the Mariners. Of course, that would be a silly conclusion to reach. We have the benefit of context and can clearly point out all of the ways in which the Rangers were inferior to both clubs, by a mile. Yet, in a small sample you will get these random variances.
If the A’s don’t have an uncharacteristic meltdown in the bullpen KC never makes into the 1st round of the playoffs. If Mike Trout doesn’t lose a ball in the lights (a play he’ll make 999 out of a 1000 times) maybe KC doesn’t win game 1 of the ALDS. The list could go on and on. One could point to events in virtually every game of the KC run and show how inches made the difference between winning and losing. That’s not skill. That’s luck or random events.
Not to take anything away from the Giants or Royals. They played incredibly well when it counted most. They also both effectively flipped the coin 10 times and called the right side on 7 of those attempts. It is statistically possible for one to be right 7 out of 10 times but it’s far from likely that you would repeat that success time and again.

Just out of curiosity, who are the players out there who could return 80-90% of Pablo’s value at a fraction of the cost? The free agent market is abysmal this year and is even worse at 3rd base.

I’m wondering if Jed Lowrie would be a good option at 3B? He’s played most of his innings at SS but does have some at 3B. I’m sure he could handle it. The Giants signing someone like Lowrie gives them more money to spend on OF and SP.

Giants were not a very impressive team. Perhaps better in the playoffs since the schedule covered up their lack of SPing with MB getting alarger percentage of the starts/innings.
Offensively they are a good team, but lacking HR power, although some of that is park. Fortunately they faced some weak hitting teams in the playoffs so their lack of power did not hurt as much

I was on a Dodger website after game one of the NLCS, and one of the commenters said:
“I can’t stand this. The Dodgers should be 1-0 right now.”
Which I took to mean, that if the Dodgers had bothered to beat the Cardinals in the NLDS, IF…then they would be 1-0 on the Giants in the NLCS based on (I’m assuming) better seasons series against the Giants…better record on paper…etc. etc. etc.
IF this, IF that.
I prefer a small playoff pool where teams that get through the 162 game grind on top are rewarded. But that ain’t the case.

And with rules set that way, they way we ALL decided we would play by to determine the World Series Champion, the Giants come out on top. Again and again and again.
Nice article. I was not surprised by the defensive results, the Giants have been all over that in recent years and its one of the big reasons they signed Gregor Blanco and Joaquin Arias, despite light bats.
I agree on Pablo and spending on pitching. But there isn’t a 50-60% salary target out there at 3B. Its Hanley Ramirez, Chase Headley and then retreads like Alberto Callaspo, Mark Reynolds, Kelly Johnson and Jack Hannahan. LF isn’t any better if you want to shift the money there. Pablo’s defense has been stellar this year, but it was very much not stellar in 2013. The best move the Giants could make is snagging Justin Masterson on a prove out deal and then convincing Andrew Miller to come take a shot at a non-pressure closing role. 3B/LF look like questions next year. There might be some help from the farm, or more Arias/Blanco types, because FA is a wasteland.

I think the Giants have a couple of approaches to the offseason.
#1 – The sign Pablo approach
#2 – The don’t sign Pablo approach
It all comes down to money (obviously). Either way, any signings this offseason need to be backloaded as much as they can because they have over $35 million rolling off the books after 2015 just in Lincecum, Hudson and Scutaro.
If the Giants re-sign Sandoval, I think they should go light in LF and maybe sign a platoon guy like Denorfia to pair with Blanco (actually, the platoon should play center moving Pagan to left). If they are not getting the offense they like they can always pick up something at the trade deadline. Sabean is not afraid to go with that scenario.
If they pass on Sandoval, why not someone like Jed Lowrie? He’s spent most of his time at SS but has done time at 3B and surely could handle the position. That would allow them to spend more $$ at OF (Rasmus, Yasmani Tomas, etc) and SP. If they don’t sign Sandoval they pick up a draft pick from the QO and can feel better about signing a pitcher with a QO attached (Santana, Liriano, etc).
