Job Posting: Washington Nationals Baseball Research & Development Positions

Position: Analyst

Summary:
The Washington Nationals are seeking an analyst to join our Baseball Research & Development team. The role focuses on using data science to derive insights from baseball datasets to support player evaluation, player development, roster construction, and in-game strategy. The analyst will largely work on long term research projects under the supervision of a senior R&D member, and report to the Senior Director of R&D. Analysts should be able to communicate findings well to all audiences, technical and non-technical. The department is flexible enough to accommodate analyst candidates with particular strengths or areas of interest, but we are seeking applicants with general ‘baseball feel’ and data science experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build statistical models to answer baseball research questions. Run projects in production through baseball season
  • Perform analyses at the request of our research directors, General Manager, assistant General Managers, player development staff, coaching staff, and/or advance scouts
  • Communicate findings through written reports, presentations, and informal conversations
  • Develop deep understanding of existing body of R&D team’s existing research, code base, and database. Take on some responsibility for improving and maintaining existing projects
  • Design and build informative data visualizations for use in automated reports or internal web applications

Requirements:
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Experience analyzing datasets and training statistical models using R, Python, or equivalent
  • Has an undergraduate or graduate degree from a four-year college or university, preferably in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or Computer Science
  • Authorized to work in the United States

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary to perform essential functions

  • Ability to complete long term statistical modeling projects and incorporate technical feedback
  • Ability to write and communicate clearly
  • Enthusiasm for learning new skills related to programming, statistical modeling, and data visualization
  • Passion for baseball and desire to work in baseball operations
  • Working knowledge of sabermetric concepts

Physical/Environmental Requirements

  • Occasional weekend and/or evening work may be required during the baseball season
  • Front office staff located in DC are expected to attend about half of the Nationals home games. Meals are provided to staff during the games

Position: Intern

Summary:
The Washington Nationals are seeking two or three interns to join our Baseball Research & Development team for the 2022 season. As an intern, you’ll work on developing your skills at applying data science to baseball, researching baseball questions under the close mentorship of a team member of Baseball R&D. You’ll likely work on one project at a time, with plenty of time for model exploration and personal skill development. You’ll have the opportunity to work in a small baseball front office daily at the stadium, watching baseball and engaging regularly with more senior members of our baseball operations group.

Internships are a key way for us to find future full-time members of our department, as many of our senior department members began as interns. While a pathway to a full-time position is not assured, many of our former interns have found full-time opportunities with the Nationals or other MLB clubs. While internships ideally span from Opening Day to November 1st, we’re open to candidates that may not be available for this entire period.

  • Authorized to work in the United States

  • Ability to listen and incorporate feedback
  • Enthusiasm for learning new skills related to programming, statistical modeling, and data visualization

Physical/Environmental Requirements

  • Occasional long hours may be required during draft, trade deadline, or postseason.
  • Interns have opportunity to attend all home games but are not required to. Meals are provided to staff during games.

Position: Developer

Summary:
The Washington Nationals are seeking a full stack web developer to join our Baseball Research & Development team. The developer will work on a small team to build and maintain an internal web application used by scouts, coaches, player development staff, and the baseball operations front office. Some key features of the site include scouting reports, video, player projections, custom reports and tools, and the display of both public and proprietary metrics related to player performance and evaluation. Applicants should have demonstrated web development and software engineering experience and be excited about the opportunity to work on software that has a significant impact within a baseball organization.

  • Develop and deploy data imports and other background processing jobs
  • Work closely with analysts to display public and private metrics
  • Understanding the needs of our internal users and building solutions meet their needs

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, information science, or related experiences
  • 2+ years of full-time web development experience
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Ability to write clean, concise, and maintainable code
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Experience with modern programming languages (i.e. Ruby, Python,, JavaScript) and frameworks (Rails, Django Node/ExpressJS). Rails is preferred
  • Experience with frontend JavaScript frameworks, such as jQuery, Vue.js, or React.
  • Understanding of relational database schema design, experience using MySQL & PostgreSQL, and comfort writing direct SQL statements
  • Experience with AWS, Linux, and using a CLI
  • Authorized to work in the United States
