Stats Diagram: Batting Composite Stats

In our continuing effort to help improve the understanding of the stats we use at FanGraphs, I created a diagram that shows the different inputs for seven of the most popular composite batting stats: AVG, BABIP, OBP, ISO, SLG, OPS, and wOBA. The intent of this diagram is to visually show how the various batting stats are related to each other, and what factors into each stat. For a more thorough description of what the stat measures and its correct interpretation please visit our library. Fortunately, this diagram isn’t as complicated as the diagram for WAR.

The seven stats are separated into three different categories based on their denominators: balls in play (BIP), at bats (AB), and plate appearance (PA). It should be noted that OBP and wOBA don’t exactly have a dominator of PA since sacrifice bunts (SH) are omitted for both, and intentional walks (IBB) are omitted in wOBA. The linear weights used in the wOBA equation change every year and the ones present in the diagram were retrieved from our Guts! section on 5/28/2015. wOBA also differentiates between normal walks (uBB) and intentional walks (IBB). The other stats treat them simply as walks.

This chart’s purpose is for conceptual understanding, so rare situations such as catcher’s interference are omitted. At the bottom of the diagram I have also included the equations that correspond to the chart. For nuances and the precise calculations please see the corresponding entries in the library.
