Jason Collette – Baseball Chat Transcript

Last one for me, let’s make it count. Chatting from 11am until 12:30pm ET

11:02
Jason Collette: It’s been 4 years since Jose Lima passed away — I loved watching that guy on the mound

11:06
Jason Collette: No wonder it was quiet in here, I’m an idiot and posted the scripting in the “view” mode rather than in the coding mode.

11:07
Comment From Vliet
Jason – Is not a good time to sell high on Ventura or Gray and what level of position player can I expectin return?

Jason Collette: I think that time has passed on Ventura & for Gray, just ride it out. Great team, great park, enjoy the ride

11:08
Comment From Guest
will Fielder be ok next year? do guys lose power after the surgery?

Jason Collette: Anything related to the back is never a good thing for a power hitter. I don’t see myself ranking him in the top 50 next year.

11:08
Comment From PS
IT WORKS

Jason Collette: I’m such an idiot

11:08
Comment From Chet Lemon
Drop T. Hunter for B. Shaw?

Jason Collette: Tommy? Yes. His closing career is circling the drain.

11:09
Comment From Adam
Thoughts about Marco Estrada’s start today in MIA? Is he safe, or would his longball problem, and Marlins’ hitting splits at home lead you to sit him?

Jason Collette: 6.5 on the 1-10 scale. He’s going to give up a homer in the start, just have to hope it’s with nobody on base.

11:09
Comment From stonepie
thoughts on aramis ROS? looking to fill the huge void fielder left…

Jason Collette: Once he’s back from the DL, he’s a fine replacement.

11:09
Comment From Francisco Lindor Truffles
Admittedly self-serving question: which side of this do you prefer (5×5 12 team league with 6 keepers) J. Castro/K. Seager/Yelich/ Wood or S. Perez/Taveras/Smyly?
Admittedly sincere appreciation: thanks for all your insight, sad to see you go.

    Jason Collette: Side B

11:10
Comment From El Conquistador
Thoughts on Jimmy Nelson? Will we see him anytime soon, and what is he capable of?

Jason Collette: I believe Milwaukee is the last team not to have a starter miss a start due to injury. Someone has to go down for Nelson to get a start.

11:11
Comment From Andrew
Charlie Blackmon! I’m terrified to deal him terrified to sit too long and lose value. Help!

Jason Collette: Sh*t or get off the pot with him. He’s good – play him or get a good return on investment. Either one is a good move.

11:12
Comment From joey
hey – just want to say i enjoyed reading your chats and i wish you the best of luck in your new job

Jason Collette: Thank you. This opportunity was too good for my family for me to pass on as much fun as it has been to “work” covering baseball.

11:12
Comment From JB
Do the Braves just send A. Wood to the farm – no point bringing him in on an inning to inning basis

Jason Collette: It would be the best thing to do for him.

11:13
Comment From Jake
Junior Lake is putting together an interesting year. Any thoughts on him being a 10/15 HR/SB guy the rest of the way?

Jason Collette: I don’t see it. BB% & K% are too risky for it

11:13
Comment From Fitz
Who’s the better minor league pitcher to stash for this year value, Gray or Syndergaard?

    Jason Collette: Gray

11:13
Comment From BRR
Andrelton Simmons is on the waiver wire in a 12 team league. Worth grabbing?

    Jason Collette: Yes

11:13
Comment From Adam
Zobrist – is what we saw before the thumb injury a skills decline, or just a slow start?

Jason Collette: He’s 33 and has played 1050 games a season at multiple positions on turf. We’re seeing a guy aging and the footspeed started disappearing last year.

11:14
Comment From taylor
H2H points league. Will Oscar Tavares outperform guys like Prado or D. Gordon?

Jason Collette: You could outperform Prado. He’s terrible this year

11:14
Comment From Troy
Hosmer or Rizzo foing forward?

Jason Collette: Rizzo — Hosmer still can’t turn groundballs into home runs

11:14
Comment From Graham
Trying to sell off CarGo. Who are some pitchers I should be asking for?

Jason Collette: Another one who is disappointing owners and is battling a nagging injury.

11:15
Comment From Jake
I own Devin Mesoraco, when is it safe to cut the batting average and counting stat fantasy anti-matter that is Carlos Santana?

Jason Collette: If you have a bench spot, you keep Santana as long as you possibly can.

11:15
Comment From Ian
Should I trade Ventura/J-Zimmerman for Rizzo/Cingrani, in H2H points? I have some pitching depth, have some offensive injuries.

    Jason Collette: Yes

11:15
Comment From IK
Need to drop one of Heyward or Gardner in a 11 team roto redraft league. Who should I drop?

Jason Collette: Gardner is on fire right now – tough to drop

11:16
Comment From Brad
Why no more chats? We like them. Also, ROS gardner or Jennings? Thanks.

Jason Collette: I’m re-entering the fulltime workforce in the edtech industry. I’ve been freelance writing since I was laid off in November while looking for a full-time opportunity in edtech or writing. Edtech struck first.

11:16
Comment From Guest
Is Matt Dominguez a poor mans Kyle Seager?

Jason Collette: Loving what Dominguez is doing right now for the price people had to pay to get him on draft day (next to nothing)

11:16
Comment From IK
First place in a 11 team roto league with Kipnis, Harper, Trumbo and Abreu on the DL. Is that good?

    Jason Collette: I’d say so.

11:17
Comment From Dave
What do you think happens to Middlebrooks? Trade, bench spot, minors? Thanks.

Jason Collette: Minors – that’s not a player who needs irregular playing time on a bench.

11:17
Comment From Kinbote
Better 3B ROS, Alvarez or Rendon?

    Jason Collette: Alvarez

11:18
Comment From El Conquistador
Corey Knebel is coming! Projections?

    Jason Collette: Velocity

11:18
Comment From BRR
Thanks for chatting Jason. Points league and could use a starter. Soria for Kennedy or Ervin? Good deal? And which one should I try for first?

    Jason Collette: For Big Erv

11:19
Comment From Guest
Is Fielder droppable in dynasty leagues?

Jason Collette: Keeper league, yes. Dynasty, no

11:20
Comment From PS
maybe tyson ross is good?

Jason Collette: Yes, but his supporting offense is laughably bad outside of Seth Smith

11:21
Comment From Brad
My wife’s a teacher so I’ll tell her to check out Edtech. Good luck.

Jason Collette: All classrooms should be using educational technology. My livelihood depends on it now 🙂

11:22
Comment From Jon
Sell high on Cueto? What sort of return could be expected?

Jason Collette: You should be able to get a top 20 bat for him

11:22
Comment From Claudio
last week i traded haren/springer for soria in a 12 team mixed holds league. my only closer was rodney and i had some good set up men…good trade?

    Jason Collette: I lean no

11:22
Comment From Jake
Tyler skaggs for Brandon Phillips, who wins?

Jason Collette: The team getting Skaggs

11:23
Comment From Adam
Does Nick Franklin stick as a regular in SEA, or purely a short term play while others are DL’d?

Jason Collette: He has his own flaws – not Brad Miller level – but still flawed. He plays as long as he does something other than go 0 for 3 with 5 K’s every game like Miller

11:23
Comment From PS
so collin mchugh. thoughts

    Jason Collette: Love the pitchability

11:23
Comment From Jeb
I got lackey and archer going tonight. Start both, one, or sit them?

Jason Collette: I’m going to that game tonight. Lackey tends to do well vs the Rays while Archer is struggling right now with his command.

11:24
Comment From Sandy
Should I try to sell high on Dee Gordon?

Jason Collette: You should have a sufficient steals lead built up if you’re considering this.

11:24
Comment From Joe
Do you like Dickerson if Cargo has to miss some extended time?

Jason Collette: He’s better than nothing

11:24
Comment From Claudio
i have K seager, should i try to trade for alvarez?

Jason Collette: I’ve been recommending getting Pedro for 2 weeks now.

11:25
Comment From Jason
NL only-ROS+next where do you rank Arenado at 3B

    Jason Collette: top 3

11:26
Comment From Guest
Is the Chiz for real? as in Lonnie

Jason Collette: he’s the real chiznit

11:26
Comment From The Humber Games
Ruh roh, look at Baez’s last week. Have the feeling the reign of terror in AAA is about to begin.

Jason Collette: Paul Sporer drove out to see him play last night and sounded like Leslie Knope meeting Michelle Obama in the P&R season finale when talking about the game afterwards

11:27
Comment From PS
why do people post questions with obvious answers just for validation? (ie ‘did i win this trade’ or ‘is this good’)

Jason Collette: We all just want to be told it is going to be alright

11:27
Comment From Claudio
is this what we should expect from kyle seager? or is it still possible he improves and has a breakout year this year?

Jason Collette: What we’re seeing now is likely what we’re going to get as long as he stays in Seattle

11:27
Comment From Art Vandelay
Drew or Simmons ROS? 5×5 league with OPS

Jason Collette: Simmons. Drew stinks vs lefties

11:28

Can Efren Navarro stick around?

Jason Collette: I don’t see it once their roster is fully healthy

11:28
Comment From KD
Ervin Santana- Buy or Sell?

    Jason Collette: Keeping

11:29
Comment From JB
Been rosters Bundy, Bradley, Bryant, and Meyer in a 16 team auction keeper where they are $1. Do I keep rostering all of them, or cut bait and hope they’re around next year?

Jason Collette: Trade at least 2 of them for stuff to help you now. You’re thinking too much about the future while neglecting the present.

11:30
Comment From Rick
Another disappointing outing from Garza last night…he is now droppable?

Jason Collette: K% is down for a 4th straight season, but otherwise he’s right in line with what he did last season with fewer homers allowed. So, no

11:30
Comment From Adam
Another here trying to be patient with C. Santana. How would you rank ROS: Trumbo (from July 1 on), Dunn, or Santana?

    Jason Collette: Santana, Trumbo, Dunn

11:30
Comment From Francisco Lindor Truffles
In a vacuum (redraft league), what OF/P combo would you try to next for CarGo?

Jason Collette: I need names for these types of things. Who are you considereing

11:31
Comment From Mike
Which side wins in a re-draft: Goldy/Melancon or CarGo/MadBum/Matt Adams

Jason Collette: without the context of league standings, side A

11:31
Comment From 1st Place Jays
Lowrie is my SS. Hang on to him or drop him for A.Escobar, Brandon Crawford, JJ Hardy, Everth Cabrera, Jeter or Simmons?

Jason Collette: Hang on to him.

11:31
Comment From Chris
Can you please rank ROC C Santana, Dominguez and Seager?

Jason Collette: flip the last 2.

11:33
Comment From Andrer
Francisco Liriano is infuriating. Anything under the hood to suggest better day’s to come?

Jason Collette: 22.3% K rate is good, and he still has the highest swing & miss rate (Misses/Swings) in baseball.

11:33
Comment From jimmy
wait, where are you going?

Jason Collette: Moving forward, doing some irregular writing here but still doing the Sunday podcast with Nick. I have a new full-time position that ties up my entire work week

11:36
Comment From Rob
What top pitcher gets lit up today and what low priced SP will had a good game?

Jason Collette: Big name blowup: of course Bailey as he takes on St Louis who owns him. Low price bargain: Edwin Jackson.

11:36
Comment From Schdy
Danny Salazar – wait and hope or time to let go?

Jason Collette: Let it go, let it go

11:36
Comment From Claudio
can tyson ross keep this up? his peripherals look great since the 2nd half of last year but his mechanics are just terrible…should i sell high or ride him out??

Jason Collette: Ride it out. I thought the same last year until Paul Sporer convinced me otherwise.

11:38
Comment From Jordan
Jason, I’ll miss the podcast. Do you have any under-performing or barely-owned OF you are watching? Pretty much any hidden reward guys.

Jason Collette: I will still be around Sundays. Looking at ESPN , I don’t understand how Pollock is still owned in just 61% of their leagues.

11:38
Comment From PS
i, personally, dont believe that i could outperform prado. unless clay buchholtz is pitching every time. then maybe

Jason Collette: Have more faith in yourself…and Buchholz is dead to me. I was offered Daniel Webb for him in AL Tout and I’m seriously considering it. That low…

11:39
Comment From Jake
I cringe to ask this but i need a CI. Dunn or Smoak ROS? (Gulp.)

    Jason Collette: Smoak

11:39
Comment From Andrer
Eaovaldi or Smyly RoS?

    Jason Collette: Smyly

11:39
Comment From 1st Place Jays
Likely to see both Gray and Butler up with the Rockies in July?

Jason Collette: I think so, yes. Looking forward to it.

11:39
Comment From Francisco Lindor Truffles
Don’t look now, but Javi Baez is putting together a hot streak

Jason Collette: Controlled violence in that swing. It’s so beautiful

11:39
Comment From Andy
Is Rosario a good enough replacement for Posey ROS, if I trade Posey to go get some other things I need (pitching, steals, saves)? It’s an OBP league which hurts but I think I can net a solid return.

Jason Collette: then go for it.

11:40
Comment From Benji
Trading Cashner for Alex Gordon and Jamie Garcia a good get or did i sell low

Jason Collette: It’s better than what I got in return last Friday night – Edwin Jackson 🙁

11:40
Comment From Guest
Do you like Starlin Castro in a dynasty for $8 12 team mixed someone cut him already?

Jason Collette: Yes, for the price at the position.

11:41
Comment From PS
ive always been slightly irritated that the cards are keeping martinez in the pen. do you think he ever gets another chance as a starter with the cards?

Jason Collette: Once he shows he can get lefties out, maybe. Lefties are hitting .313/.391/.463 vs him in his career & he K’s 11% of them while walking 12% of them. Starting pitchers can’t do that.

11:41
Comment From Grunge
Is Marcus Stroman worth stashing as a decent option down the road? Would you rather have him or a healthy Erlin?

Jason Collette: I believe in Stroman’s long-term potential.

11:41
Comment From 1st Place Jays
I dropped Trumbo for Taveras. Good move?

Jason Collette: Taveras should be back first, but depends on your needs.

11:42
Comment From ljc
Which side wins in a Darvish for Carlos Gomez trade (standard 5×5 league)? Somewhat related, who would you rather have the rest of the year, Darvish or Sale?

    Jason Collette: Gomez, Darvish

    Jason Collette: Done

11:42
Comment From BRR
Can you suggest some pitchers to target in exchange for Melky?

Jason Collette: Provide a list of targets

11:43
Comment From PS
a) does odor get a longer leash with the profar injury? B) Profar will bounce back next year right?

Jason Collette: A) Yes, B) will need some recovery time since he will have missed so much live action.

11:43
Comment From Los
Should I trade Cargo, Hosmer, Longo for Beltre, Reyes, and Wil Myers. I’m currently in 1st but have had a black hole at SS (although I recently picked up Solarte in a minor trade.

Jason Collette: Seems like a name swap. Myers is showing signs of coming out of it but Longoria looks horrendous at the plate these days. Is hitting nothing with authority.

11:44
Comment From steve
Rank em for next week: Roark MIA/TX, Tepesch @MIN/@WAS, Miley SD/CIN, McCarthy SD/CIN, deGrom PIT/@PHI

Jason Collette: McCarthy, Miley, deGrom, Roark, tepesch

11:44
Comment From Matt Nokes
Just before his 3 HR outburst, traded Chris Davis for VMart…tell me I won’t regret this.

Jason Collette: If V-Mart gets that catcher eligibility, you won’t

11:44
Comment From Rated Rookie
Do you think Polanco or Taveras will get enough ABs and do enough with them to be ROY contenders?

    Jason Collette: Yes

11:45
Comment From Jake
What kind of 1B or OF can you get for Longoria? You think I could get Brandon Moss? I have Miggy at third… Other options?

Jason Collette: Longo is tough to deal right now because he looks like dogsh*t at the plate. It’s a harsh phrase, but it is accurate.

11:45
Comment From Sagar
thoughts on Granderson ROS? He’s been playing a lot better as of late

Jason Collette: He’s a veteran and is stable – the home/road stuff is overblown.

11:45
Comment From 1st Place Jays
Thoughts on Jason Castro? Is he droppable in a 10 teamer?

    Jason Collette: for?

11:46
Comment From Maddie
Some say that NYM’s Campbell is the next Zobrist. Your thoughts?.

Jason Collette: that’s a loose restatement of the original article, but the skills are intriguing enough for a 10 team NL pickup or a 15 team mixer.

11:46
Comment From Mike
10-team re-draft, and I can trade Goldy and Melancon for CarGo, MadBum, and Matt Adams. Do it?

Jason Collette: Didn’t I answer this earlier?

11:47
Comment From PS
i stayed up til 1am (ish) watching college softball…it is surprisingly good (i needed something to help forget about the red sox for a day or two)

Jason Collette: I watched the Sopranos since HBO streaming is finally up on Amazon Prime. Forgot how awesome that series was.

11:47
Comment From El Conquistador
Concussion aside, Travis d’Arnaud has been AWFUL. I thought this guy was a hitter. Can he turn things around?

Jason Collette: Shocking that a guy who put up big numbers in tremendous hitting parks is struggling to hit in a pitcher’s park. Stunned, I tell you!

11:47
Comment From Kinbote
Whaaa where are you going?!

Jason Collette: To colonize the moon.

11:48

Shark to the AL East inflates his ERA by what %? (You know, assuming he gets traded)

Kazmir and Ventura for Joey Bats and Haren. Non-keeper roto league, who wins?

    Jason Collette: Side B

11:49

who are the worst type of fantasy owners: 1.those who never respond to trade offers at all 2. those who lowball you consistently

Jason Collette: 3. The ones that don’t set active lineups

11:49
Comment From Claudio
does Liriano turn it around? my friend and i keep arguing about this daily. i think his peripherals are too good not to, my friend thinks his better control last year was a fluke and he’s going to suck all year…what do you think he does ROS?

Jason Collette: Good K% rate, good whiff rate, I’m buying

11:49
Comment From Tony G.
Would you start Kazmir in Toronto tonight?

Trade Sonny Gray for Jayson Werth? Auction keeper w/ OBP where both are too expensive to keep next year anyway.

    Jason Collette: Yes

11:50
Comment From Jacob
New to Fantasy Baseball: What Hitting Stat is the best indicator that a batter is “seeing the ball well”. OPS?

Jason Collette: I prefer to use O-Swing% on our player pages. I want the guys that aren’t swinging at things out of the zone.

Xander Bogaerts seems to be heating up. Valuable fantasy commodity the rest of the league?

Jason Collette: Yes, had to laugh at the comments about his this week. Kid has an 11% walk rate & a .380 OBP in his first full season & we’re saying “he’s sketchy offensively” CAMON

Matt Joyce was dropped in my league. Grab him now?

Jason Collette: He’s had a bad May falling back into some bad habits after encouraging signs in April.

11:53
Comment From Guest
2014 Matt Adams is vastly different than 2013 Matt Adams. All contact, high babip, no walks, doubles power. What triple slash do you expect going forward?

any thoughts on hellickson when he returns? people loved him before his rookie year then he played and everyone went kind of meh on him. when healthy this year, can he break out?

Jason Collette: He has to be fixed mechanically out of the stretch. The slide step has been disastrous for him – he’s not the hot mess he was last year.

11:55
Comment From Adam
When Votto returns from DL, drop Headley, Dunn, or Fowler? (12 team h2h 5×5 OBP)

    Jason Collette: Headley

11:56
Comment From Stephen
Lowrie over Hardy? Surprised – i’m expecting a power breakout here any second now…

Jason Collette: Looking at some of the data, Lowrie has some strong hard hit balls but doesn’t have the results from that yet. They’ll come.

    Jason Collette: .295, 18 homers, 80 RBI

Was offered Miggy Cab for my Cueto. I’m crazy for even hesitating for a second correct?

Jason Collette: even for .0000000000000000000000000000000001% of a second.

11:57

Pitcher most likely on waivers who will catch fire and help your ratios?

    Jason Collette: McCarthy

11:58
Comment From Charles
Is it time to temper our expectations of Machado, both this season and beyond? Seems to be a prime example of a better real life player than fantasy

Jason Collette: He’s a better real player than he is a fantasy player, and that’s not going to change any time soon.

11:58

Was offered harper + teheran for my encarnacion in keeper league. Don’t have much power and I’m still in it, really tempted though.

Jason Collette: If you don’t have much power, you can’t do that

11:59

Any chance Mookie Betts makes it to Boston soon? And how does he do when he gets there?

Jason Collette: Saw something from Marc Normandin this morning that they’re giving Betts time in all 3 OF spots in the minors right now. That’s going to take a little time for him

12:02

have Danny Salazar as my N/A on roster…if I “let him go” i’m looking at either Gausman for his return or Kris Bryant. Which is better second of season assumming Bryant gets the call. Thanks!

What exactly is it about facing a pitcher of the opposite hand to the batter that provides such an advantage to the hitter?

Jason Collette: Ball spins toward them more often than not and they get a longer look at the baseball

Once he’s up will Taveras be more useful/productive in roto than Craig ROS?

Jason Collette: Yes. Craig is getting pounded on the inner third & he’s doing nothing with those pitches. Points to the foot not being 100% if he can’t plant, turn & burn on pitches

Since most pitchers are righties are left handed hitting prospects “worth” more?

Jason Collette: Yes, because if they fail to hit the same handed guys, they at least get the strong side of the platoon. Righties that can’t hit righties are marginalized

Do AL pitching prospects practice hitting as much as NL pitching prospects in the minors?

Jason Collette: DH is dictated by the home team in the minors & they sometimes let both teams use it. Put DH in both leagues, let manager decide which player to use it for. That way, Greinke can still hit while most every other pitcher can continue to look putrid.

the Orioles broadcast last night mentioned Fangraphs. it was only to show projected standings, but still cool I thought.

Jason Collette: I’ve been told MASN is the king of using selective endpoints for graphics during the game. I hope they didn’t use fangraphs to support one of those.

Would you cut Balfour for a quality waiver pickup? Or bench and wait for turnaround?

Jason Collette: Bench. He’s struggling with command and if it were injury related, the Rays would have already placed him on the DL. They don’t let guys pitch through pain.

Do you buy into the theory that it may a good idea to try to sell players low, as the trade partners just think you are panicking and they can take advantage of you? Selling high is so tough since it is obvious what you are doing…

Jason Collette: I try to address the team need(s) rather than focus on the individual player. Makes it easier to get something done.

Are you at all encouraged by the comments Taijuan Walker made concerning adjustments to delivery (i.e. finishing his pitches, not finishing so upright)?

Jason Collette: Somewhat – he was short-striding last year and that’s a dangerous thing for a pitcher.

12:29
Comment From B
Read the article on Chris Archer this week and still not sure what to do with the guy. Keep him and see or stream each week for best guy/matchup? My staff is mediocre.

Jason Collette: His command is not good enough right now to be a set it and forget it guy. Stuff is still there, but the command of said stuff has been MIA. I’d love for him to throw the slider to both sides of the plate to RH & stop just front dooring it. When he missed the front door, it just hangs out over the plate & is getting hit hard.

12:29
Comment From Steven
What should I make of Mike Fiers 12 K to BB ratio in AAA? Could he ever be a mid-rotation guy?

Jason, what do I do with Prince in a dynasty league? My other 1B is Brandon Belt. We use actual salaries as cap hits and I do not have enough space to add anyone, so I’m rolling with no first baseman right now.
