Jeff Sullivan FanGraphs Chat — 7/24/18

9:03

Jeff Sullivan: Hello friends

9:03

Jeff Sullivan: Welcome to Tuesday baseball chat

9:03

Jeff Sullivan: This is a temporary arrangement — I’ll be out of town this Friday and next, so I’ve swapped days so as to not miss a chat

9:04

Jeff Sullivan: Swapped places with Meg this week, and it looks like the odds are I’ll do the same next week. Then back to normal!

9:05

botchatheny: when you look into poncedeleon what do you see?

9:07

Jeff Sullivan: Swing-and-miss fastball he’s become increasingly comfortable using up in the zone. Secondary pitches are behind and control isn’t perfect, but when you have a good heater as a primary pitch, you can be successful for several innings at a time

9:08

Jeff Sullivan: Not entirely convinced he’s a long-term starter, but he deserves the opportunity

9:08

adam: Does the loss of Suter increase or decrease the Brewers pursuit of a high end starter ala DeGrom?

9:08

Jeff Sullivan: Increases the odds the Brewers land some kind of starter, but it’s almost impossible for me to imagine the Mets trading deGrom this week with their front-office arrangement

9:09

Jeff Sullivan: You have to be so careful and thorough when trading a player like that. The Mets are in no position to execute that sufficiently well

9:09

Jeff Sullivan: (One might argue that’s been true for years)

9:10

Rockies Dude: What do the Rockies do at the deadline? I’m guessing just a BP arm, maybe a UTIL bench player as well.

9:12

Jeff Sullivan: I think your instincts are correct. They’re too good to leave things as they are, but they’re not good enough to make a major push. Extremely unlikely to catch the Dodgers, and there’s a lot of wild-card competition. Even the Pirates are back in the mix

9:13

Bo: Very SSS alert, but Ronald Acuna is crushing it batting leadoff. Is there reason to believe he is better fit hitting first than lower in the order?

9:15

Jeff Sullivan: July Acuna is basically May Acuna with a way higher BABIP. He’s batted just 17 times at leadoff, almost all over the past three days. Some guys do respond differently to different spots in the order, and it’s not like Acuna is going to hurt the Braves up there, but I think the expectation should always be that it won’t make a difference, until or unless proven otherwise

9:15

Anthony: Would Zach Britton lose trade value if he didn’t pitch for a week or so? With the Orioles buried and moving toward a trade, why play him at all and risk him blowing something out in the interim?

9:16

Jeff Sullivan: Teams all want to see evidence that Britton is back. Can’t show evidence if he’s not pitching. That would only increase concern

9:17

Jeff Sullivan: This is a time when small samples become important samples, rightly or not. It doesn’t help the Orioles that Britton has issued a walk in each of his last three appearances

9:18

Jeff Sullivan: 15.2 innings, 10 walks, 13 strikeouts. Britton can survive a little wildness, but the Orioles would really love to see him strike out the side or something

9:18

Dave: Which team is more likely to torpedo a deGrom-to-the-Yankees deal: The Mets, and their reluctance to help their crosstown rivals? Or the Yankees, who have picked a weird time to become a team that hoards prospects?

9:18

Jeff Sullivan: Based on some of the information becoming public, I don’t think the Mets would even so much as entertain the idea of trading deGrom to the Yankees

9:19

Jeff Sullivan: Mets more likely to torpedo it from the start; Yankees more likely to torpedo it if it moved forward

9:20

2-D: To ever near a sense of completion on a manager’s rating would you find it essential to see how they operate in the playoffs?

9:20

Jeff Sullivan: I don’t think so. Most of what you need to do in the playoffs can be taught. It’s not that difficult — lean on your best players. I think you could assume playoff performance based on regular-season performance, as managers go

9:21

Johnny Coconuts: Do the Red Sox have what it takes to acquire someone like Asdrubal Cabrera or Ian Kinsler? And what are the odds it happens?

9:21

Jeff Sullivan: Neither player would be very expensive. The Red Sox could definitely afford one or the other

9:22

Jeff Sullivan: Not at all clear it’s necessary. Might as well just beef up the bullpen even more instead

9:23

Rivervillian: will justin smoak be on the move this season or will toronto extend him into the foreseeable future?

9:23

Jeff Sullivan: No market out there for him right now. Plus he has a cheap club option for 2019. He’ll stay put, almost certainly

9:24

Jeff Sullivan: The Mariners would make some sense, I guess, but they’ll be playing Cano at first down the stretch, and Vogelbach deserves a look if and when they give up on Healy

9:24

Isaac: Jeff, the Mets world is up in arms about DeGrom not receiving enough run support, time and time again, to qualify for a win. Does this really matter? The Mets aren’t competing for anything. Wins shouldn’t be that important for a pitcher’s resume, but does this have anything to do with DeGrom’s future earnings potential?

9:25

Jeff Sullivan: Not really. Everybody understands that deGrom is great. Meaningful negotiations no longer come down to wins and losses. deGrom will get paid what he’s worth, and for now, this is just something to talk about because it’s representative of how frustrating the Mets have become, that they can’t win games where their best starter pitches his ass off

9:27

Tom: Hi Jeff- thanks for the chat. It’s starting to feel more and more like the Cardinals should sell. Who do you see being on the market for them- Norris? Others? Anybody who you can see fetching a decent return?

9:28

Jeff Sullivan: Don’t think there’s a lot for them to do. They’re still on the periphery of the hunt right now, and they’d project to be in a similar position next year. They could move a reliever or two but it’s already a crowded market so a huge return would be unlikely. Jose Martinez could get dealt, but he also has major limitations. The other Martinez hasn’t done his stock any favors lately

9:29

AKA22: Will the AL second wildcard have the lowest odds to make the world series in MLB playoff history? Either way, should that impact their willingness to spend to win that 5th seed?

9:30

Jeff Sullivan: Let’s see. Right now, the Mariners and A’s combine for a 4.5% chance of reaching the World Series

9:30

Jeff Sullivan: Last season, at the end, we gave the Twins a 2.9% chance of reaching the World Series

9:31

Jeff Sullivan: That team was similarly screwed. So it will be again. Which, on the plus side, comes with significant Cinderella potential!

9:31

Jeff Sullivan: The Mariners are driven by a desperate need to just play a damn playoff game. The A’s won’t overspend for anyone but they already got a good reliever for cheap

9:33

Chipper: Matt Carpenter is now the NL leader in wRC+ and is leading all NL hitters in WAR. On May 1st, Matt Carpenter was hitting .155/.305/.274

9:33

Jeff Sullivan: Carpenter in April: .265 wOBA
Carpenter since: .457

9:33

Jeff Sullivan: Carpenter in April: .404 expected wOBA
Carpenter since: .445

9:34

Jeff Sullivan: It’s clear that expected wOBA doesn’t accurately capture every single thing we would like it to. But when you see something like Carpenter’s April, in terms of both of those numbers, the xwOBA really helps to take the edge off. Carpenter was likely always going to be fine

9:35

Jeff Sullivan: Regardless of whether he had any salsa

9:35

CamdenWarehouse: I thoroughly enjoyed the Hardball Times moment on last week’s EW. Has Meg had words with you yet?

9:35

Jeff Sullivan: She very courteously has not

9:36

adam: Would the Dodgers be willing to include Beuhler in a trade for DeGrom?

9:36

Jeff Sullivan: Can’t imagine them getting to that point, assuming the Mets ask for Buehler+

9:36

Jeff Sullivan: That’s one of those additions and subtractions. Hate those

9:37

Bo: Latest reports are that the Braves are looking for controllable talent… But is there really anyone who fits the bill that’s available at the deadline?

9:37

Jeff Sullivan: Not very much. This deadline sucks. But they could target, say, Adam Conley! I think I might write about him after the chat. He looks pretty good

9:38

Tyler: This year Jake Ordorizzi is ranked first among A.L. pitcher in Def.  He also ranks 101st overall in M.L. for pitcher Def.  There is no way that the N.L. has the 100 best Def pitchers in baseball is there?

9:39

Jeff Sullivan: Def for pitchers is a function of playing time as a hitter. AL pitchers, obviously, seldom get to hit

9:39

Jeff Sullivan: You’d be better off looking at pitcher DRS, if you just want to know about defensive performance instead of positional adjustment for offensive WAR

9:41

Anthony: Any reason to believe that Archer’s run prevention won’t positively regress? I keep waiting for his ERA to match his FIP, but it’s not happening.

9:44

Jeff Sullivan: Archer has a pretty long history of allowing slightly harder contact than average

9:44

Jeff Sullivan: It might come from the fact that he’s so good at getting whiffs out of the zone that a lot of the contact he allows is *in* the zone

9:45

Jeff Sullivan: Still, this is a guy whose career ERA- is only five points worse than his FIP-. And he’s been pitching in the AL East, where he’s had to face tougher opposing lineups than most everyone else for a while

9:46

Jeff Sullivan: Archer might be a true-talent .310 BABIP guy or something. But I still like him a lot as a No. 2 who can look like a No. 1

9:46

Warren: As a padres fan, there’s obviously lots of exciting young talent on the farm, but with the Hosmer contract appearing worse by the day and Hedges/Margot not taking any promising steps forward, is there anyone on the current roster who will be part of the Next Good Padres Team?  Should that be concerning?

9:46

Jeff Sullivan: Lucchesi is pretty talented

9:47

Jeff Sullivan: And Hosmer will be there, whether he deserves to be or not!

9:47

Kev: Jeff, thanks for making our Tuesdays much better. We appreciate all the time and effort into answering all of our questions!

9:47

Jeff Sullivan: Sometimes the effort is minimal!

9:47

Billy Beane: Jeff, if you are chatting today does that mean I don’t have to work tomorrow?

9:47

Jeff Sullivan: I don’t see why it wouldn’t

9:48

Curtis: Why are the A’s so successful this season?

9:48

Jeff Sullivan: Deep lineup, improved defense, dominant back of the bullpen

9:49

Jeff Sullivan: Matt Chapman is becoming a legitimate star, and Blake Treinen is everything he was always supposed to be

9:50

Jeff Sullivan: By record, the A’s are somewhat overachieving, but relative to the Mariners it’s nothing

9:50

Brett: What would an A’s trade with the Royals look like for Duffy?

9:51

Jeff Sullivan: It’s hard for me to see the Royals going there now, with Duffy’s stock low. Very difficult for the Royals and A’s to agree on what, exactly, Duffy is right now

9:53

Mac Gwire: Every Britton stat seems like it’s going in the wrong direction, but all the smart teams want him. What do they know that we don’t?

9:53

Jeff Sullivan: What they’re offering

9:54

Jeff Sullivan: Britton is still getting whiffs, and he’s still throwing hard. It’s obvious the sinker is still in there somewhere. But it’s one thing to find a pitcher interesting and it’s quite another to get him in exchange for a couple quality prospects. I doubt the Orioles are looking at a blockbuster here

9:55

Jeff Sullivan: It’s always weird to answer these questions during a chat when I don’t know if a trade has happened without me noticing

9:55

Jeff Sullivan: So far, nope!

9:56

CrashedDavis: 1) Getting chats with only a 1 work day gap is amazing, though we miss Meg and 2) i’ve seen Trumbo to Seattle rumors. is there any reason the Mariners want to do this? and do the Os get a return? and how much do they have to pay down?

9:56

Jeff Sullivan: The Mariners already have Mark Trumbo. His name is Ryon Healy

9:57

Trev: Fill in the blank:   _______number of PA’s Dan Vogelbach gets with the 2018 Mariners, _______ number of PA’s Dan Vogelbach gets with the 2019 Mariners

9:57

Jeff Sullivan: I’ll go with 150 and 0

9:58

adam: Is Cueto still broken.  so many homers

9:59

Jeff Sullivan: Cueto definitely doesn’t seem right

9:59

Jeff Sullivan: His injury already made me nervous and I’m afraid we haven’t seen the last of it

10:00

Noah: As a Pirates fan, what’s the most optimistic reason I can cling to so I can continue to believe our streak is “for real”?

10:00

Jeff Sullivan: Took five of five from a wild-card team, and the pitching has generated just about a strikeout an inning

10:03

Jeff Sullivan: Incidentally, for the year, Andrew McCutchen has been worth 1.0 WAR, and Kyle Crick is at 0.9

10:03

Jeff Sullivan: I know that doesn’t capture everything, but that trade looks pretty good for Pittsburgh already, provided you ignore, you know, the feelings

10:03

Justin: What is holding up the Britton trade that is inevitable? Are they just waiting for the underwhelming package they prefer?

10:03

Jeff Sullivan: Yes

10:04

Jeff Sullivan: When multiple teams are in competition with one another, the Orioles aren’t the team that needs to be showing real urgency. It’s not like they have a lot of other business to conduct

10:05

Kiermaier’s Piercing Green Eyes: Fans hate when a player doesn’t hustle, but extra effort is how players get hurt. Kiermaier always seems to miss 60 games for a dive, Ramos will be on the DL for the non-waiver deadline, Tatis Jr. is out because of his slide. On the other hand, Gary Sánchez’s performance last night must have been infuriating to watch. Have teams tried to figure out the appropriate level of effort (probably as a function of leverage), or is it too messy an area of individual psychology and not wanting to mess with instincts?

10:06

Jeff Sullivan: For the most part it’s just going to be instinctual. You can’t program a player to hustle when the leverage index reaches a certain point. You’re absolutely right that it’s always a balance and it’s worth noting that Ichiro might not have ever attempted a diving catch for this reason. He values his health too highly

10:07

Jeff Sullivan: The odds of getting hurt while hustling are low. At the bare minimum, players should demonstrate “false” hustle — running at like 90-95%

10:07

Jeff Sullivan: Injuries tend to happen when you’re going all out. Players definitely shouldn’t go all out under all circumstances. Sanchez yesterday? Should’ve. Unless he was still feeling hurt, in which case he should’ve told someone ahead of time

10:08

Mac Gwire: Outside the NL East, who is the most likely division leader not to win at this point? Boston has a big lead, and the Dodgers and Cubs are so good.

10:09

Jeff Sullivan: I’ll say the Red Sox. I don’t think they’re actually better than the Yankees, and they’ll play another ten head-to-head games

10:09

carrotjuice: How can the league wide wRC+ be 97 rather than 100? It was 97 last season also.

10:10

Jeff Sullivan: It’s scaled to 100 for non-pitchers. When you include pitchers, it gets dragged down

10:10

groucho: What should the cardinals do at the deadline?

10:10

Jeff Sullivan: Stew

10:10

Tony Womack: Joakim Soria has been very solid this year. Why hasn’t his name been mentioned in trade talks?

10:10

Jeff Sullivan: It has

10:10

Jeff Sullivan: He’ll get traded. He’s the only White Sox player right now likely to bring anything meaningful back

10:11

Derek in Little Rock: Who wrote and sings “Today’s Stat Blast”???

10:11

Jeff Sullivan: Ben’s wife Jessie

10:12

Patrick: Why is Britton getting so much buzz when he hasn’t been all that effective as of late? Is it just #provencloser noise?

10:13

Jeff Sullivan: Because of his previous peak. Because he was sidelined this year with a non-arm injury. Even last season, Britton kept his ERA under 3 while his forearm hurt. Not very many relievers proven to be effective over multiple seasons

10:14

Tyler: Since 2010 only 7 A.L. teams have ranked in the top 10 for team defense.  How is this possible that the N.L. has on avg more than 90% of the best defenses every year?

10:14

Jeff Sullivan: AL teams get dragged down by having the DH. The positional adjustment for the DH is big

10:16

Mike: Jeff I’m starting to really believe in Max Muncy. Is a 130 wRC+ RoS too high or too low?

10:16

Jeff Sullivan: My previous true-talent guess was 130. I have since bumped that up to 135

10:17

Jeff Sullivan: This somehow isn’t getting enough attention, even though it’s getting a lot of attention

10:18

adam: are the yankees sooo concerned about Justus’ control issues that they wont give him a chance before September?

10:19

Jeff Sullivan: He’s not on the 40-man roster, which is one problem, and another problem is that his strike rates are indeed a few points below the league averages. Legitimate reason to believe Sheffield isn’t ready, so bumping someone off the 40-man roster to make room could be hasty

10:19

Jeff Sullivan: They’ll re-evaluate if they don’t trade for a starter soon, but for the time being I don’t think Sheffield is the best option

10:21

stever20: Can Colorado keep up this pitching run they’re on.  Last 30 days they’re 4th best ERA both starters and relievers?  Big reason why they’re 15-6 last 21 games with a brutal schedule.

10:21

Jeff Sullivan: The Rockies don’t have a top-five MLB pitching staff, but over the past month their starters are first in GB%, and their relievers are second

10:23

Jeff Sullivan: Tyler Anderson deserves more credit than the…zero credit he ever receives. And German Marquez’s strikeouts have taken off since April or so

10:24

Just A Dude: Riley, Allard, Anderson, Muller enough to get deGrom and Frazier while Atlanta absorbs all salary?

10:24

Jeff Sullivan: No

10:25

John: What would need to happen for the Nationals to consider selling at the deadline?

10:25

Jeff Sullivan: Getting swept by the Marlins would do it!

10:25

Jeff Sullivan: Can’t imagine they’ll go that far, though. And it would be tough to suddenly become a seller anyway, assuming they haven’t been holding such conversations to this point with other teams. Not just a switch you can flip

10:27

Scott M: Any opinions on Tyler Saladino?  I heard the Brewers helped him tweak some things at the plate and he’s been a solid contributor this season (admittedly small sample size).  Think he can sustain these improvements?

10:29

Jeff Sullivan: He’s basically swinging harder. One of those guys who’s exchanged contact for lift. I like his defensive versatility and he has a decent eye — I can see Saladino as a decent semi-regular. He makes the shortstop situation a little less urgent for now

10:29

Jeff Sullivan: But it’s not like Tyler Saladino is exactly becoming the next Max Muncy

10:30

Jeff Sullivan: What a sentence to write

10:30

Jared: What do you make of the A’s 2b situation? Will they really extended Lowrie and block Barreto even longer? It can’t be helpful for him to get inconsistent at bats at the MLB level

10:31

Jeff Sullivan: Barreto has struck out 43% of the time he’s batted in the majors, and he’s also shown a strikeout problem in Triple-A. I like him, but he doesn’t seem ready, and Lowrie has been outstanding

10:33

Jeff Sullivan: Could be that Semien ends up the guy on the outside. The A’s love Lowrie and I do think they’d like to keep him another year or two

10:33

Jeff Sullivan: He’s 34, so he won’t be looking for that much length

10:34

Jeff Sullivan: If only Khris Davis could throw

10:34

Josh: I saw a rumor yesterday that Milwaukee is interested in Moustakas and would be open to using Travis Shaw at 2B. This…can’t be true, can it?  Does Dozier to the Brewers almost feel inevitable?

10:35

Jeff Sullivan: I’m sure it’s just something they’ve thought about, and it’s not crazy, given that Shaw is a good defensive 3B and the adjustment to 2B isn’t dramatic

10:36

Jeff Sullivan: That being said, that’s like more of an offseason move, since Shaw hasn’t played an inning at second in the majors in his career. Would have very little time to pick it up, and, importantly, Mike Moustakas isn’t very good

10:36

Jeff Sullivan: Dozier fits. Escobar also fits

10:37

v2micca: I’m finding myself increasingly hostile to the argument that reworking the current service time model could harm small market teams.  With a defacto salary cap in place, but no salary floor, why should a small market team be any more entitled to star players and massively under-market salaries?

10:38

Jeff Sullivan: Baseball doesn’t want to end up with permanent haves and have-nots and there simply aren’t 30 equivalent markets to go around. I think before you tweak the service-time rules, you bump up the league-minimum salaries. That way you shift compensation earlier without completely destroying the Rays’ operating model

10:39

Jeff Sullivan: And when I say “bump” I mean significantly. Could argue for $1-million minimum, at least

10:41

Arthur: What’s your take on all the NY media outrage over Gary last night?

10:42

Jeff Sullivan: “Sanchez, who needed 5.39 seconds to reach first base, has raced from home to first as quickly as 4.33 seconds this season. Sanchez’s “max-effort” average on runs from home to first this year — the top 10 percent of his home-to-first dashes — is 4.53 seconds.”

10:42

Jeff Sullivan: “I hit the ball well there. I should have run harder. There was a chance [Hicks] was going to be out at second base, but that didn’t happen. He was safe.”

10:43

Jeff Sullivan: So, I mean, it’s just one play, and just one game — this isn’t reason enough to want the Yankees to trade Sanchez or anything

10:43

Jeff Sullivan: I should say, it’s at least a couple plays, since there was also that passed ball

10:44

Jeff Sullivan: That being said, especially at the end, to not hustle in that moment is legitimately inexcusable, unless Sanchez was hurt. You have to send a message to try to get through to him. Few days of being benched

10:44

ryan: Hi Jeff — thanks for chatting today! What sort of return do you expect the Reds to get for Harvey?

10:45

Jeff Sullivan: Small. I think Harvey will be a very interesting free agent for a progressive team to look at, but for now he’s a Jaime Garcia-level trade piece

10:45

Drew: Do the A’s or Mariners win the second wild card? Are the Mariners a better team than the A’s with Cano?

10:46

Jeff Sullivan: Still think it’s the Mariners, but the gap is only getting slimmer and slimmer. Mariners better hope they get it this year, because next year will only look worse

10:46

Guest: So, if this whole position players pitching thing becomes a trend, it’s bad for baseball right?

10:47

Jeff Sullivan: Already is a trend, albeit a somewhat subtle one

10:47

Jeff Sullivan: Doing a cursory search, there have been 31 instances in baseball history in which multiple position players have pitched for a team in the same game

10:48

Jeff Sullivan: Four of those have happened in the last four days. Five have happened in the last two weeks

10:49

Jeff Sullivan: I don’t think it’s so bad provided it doesn’t get out of control — some position players kind of like it, the stakes are non-existent, and fans still get a kick out of the whole experience. But this is something the union might use to argue for a 26th roster spot

10:50

Jeff Sullivan: Even zero-leverage innings are innings that could be going to someone in Triple-A who’s looking to build a career

10:52

Small Sample Steve: Hi Jeff, I was wondering what you thought of the Cubs platooning Schwarber at this point in his career. I get that he sucks against lefties and they are in win now mode, but doesn’t this seriously limit his potential as a player, especially one destined to become a DH in he future? Do they just not care?

10:52

Jeff Sullivan: Schwarber got about 100 PA against lefties last year, and he’s on pace to do it again this year

10:54

Jeff Sullivan: He’s faced righties 81% of the time. Joc Pederson is all the way up at 87%. Matt Joyce, 91%. Curtis Granderson, 92%. Those are more extreme platoons

10:54

Jeff Sullivan: Schwarber’s closer to guys like Jesse Winker and Corey Dickerson. I wouldn’t worry about it too much

10:55

Jeff Sullivan: We’re talking about just a handful of live at-bats he’s not getting, stretched over the course of six or seven months

10:55

Bear: Does Archer get traded and who gets him?

10:55

Jeff Sullivan: Don’t see it happening this week

10:55

Jeff Sullivan: The Rays are closer than people believe

10:56

Troutmaggedon: How was Jram’s 2b defense? Even though his bat plays anywhere, would it help the tribe to trade for someone like Moose to play 3b and move Jram back to a more premium position for that uber-elite production.

10:56

Jeff Sullivan: Now that Jason Kipnis has come alive, I don’t know what Moustakas would provide the Indians of any meaningful value

10:57

Georgie: Daniel Robertson has really started to come into his own with the bat and Jake Bauers has been pretty impressive. Rays look like they have one of the brighter futures in the game with many more young players coming. Do you believe in their future?

10:57

Jeff Sullivan: Yep

10:57

Jeff Sullivan: I’ll point to this again: the top six BaseRuns records in baseball this season belong to, in order, the Astros, Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, and Rays

10:58

Jeff Sullivan: That’s a Rays team in transition, a Rays team that’s lost a lot of good young pitching to injury

10:58

Jeff Sullivan: They could make the playoffs as soon as next season

10:59

Mark: Wil Myers is pretty good when he’s on the field, right?  His contract isn’t as bad as people make it out to be if he’s healthy.

10:59

Jeff Sullivan: He’s fine. Don’t buy him as a star, but he’s hardly the Padres’ most pressing problem

11:00

Daniel L: Is it too early in the rebuild for the Padres to trade for Noah Syndergaard?

11:00

Jeff Sullivan: Ken Rosenthal just published an article talking about how the Padres are checking on Chris Archer

11:00

Jeff Sullivan: They think they’re a year or two away. Never hurts to check around

11:00

AKA22: As a Braves fan who does not really want them to get in on bidding for Britton, who are the other best RP left they could be after? Seems like rental relief aces have been just about free so far and it’s frustrating seeing the Braves miss out when their pen is so clearly the team’s weakest link.

11:01

Jeff Sullivan: There are a *lot* of pretty good relievers who could be available. Don’t worry about missing on what’s been moved so far, because there’s more where that came from

11:02

Jeff Sullivan: Soria! Yates! Stammen! Conley! Pressly! Kela! Diekman! Leclerc! And so on and so forth

11:03

stever20: How worried should the Dodgers be by Stripling?  He’s given up now to include the all star game 9 hr in the last 29 innings after giving up only 7 hr in 72 innings.

11:03

Jeff Sullivan: Stripling since June 10: 46.2 innings, 10 homers, 3 walks, 48 strikeouts

11:03

Jeff Sullivan: I doubt they’re worried at all

11:03

Jeff Sullivan: I’m sure he’ll get fatigued at some point, but he’s been amazing

11:04

Mitchy Two Bags : What kind of return are you expecting the O’s to get for Britton? Are top 100 prospects out of the question the way the rental market has played out?

11:04

Jeff Sullivan: I could maybe see someone from the bottom of the top-100 list

11:04

Jeff Sullivan: All right, I need to get rolling

11:04

Jeff Sullivan: So thank you everybody for hanging out, and I’m sorry for what I didn’t or couldn’t address. We’ll do it again next week at probably the same time, and until then, be well and have great days

Jeff made Lookout Landing a thing, but he does not still write there about the Mariners. He does write here, sometimes about the Mariners, but usually not.

Stripling since the June 10 mark that Jeff noted has a 3.47 ERA and 4.14 FIP. with 10 HR given up. (and this doesn’t include all star game) 89.5% LOB rate
prior to that he had a 1.52 ERA and 2.03 FIP. With 3 HR given up

If that’s not worrisome, what in the heck is?

but even his xFIP is up from 1.75 to 3.00- using just his 1st 6 starts for real(not counting the first start on April 30 where he gave up 4 runs in 4 innings. )

1st 6 starts- 1.06/1.13/1.75 4.8 hr/fb 12.4 k/9, 35.6 k%
last 6 starts- 3.47/4.14/3.00 21.3 hr/fb, 9.26 k/9, 25.3 k%

He’s right now at 100 innings pitched, which is the most he’s ever thown in the bigs. He’s within 27 innings of the most he’s thrown since TJ surgery.

Stripling just isn’t a sub 2.00 ERA kind of pitcher. Even if he’s regressed to a 3.00 xFIP, that’s still pretty dang good.

last year he gave up 16.7 hr/fb. While yes the last 6 starts have been a bit worse than that- it’s a lot closer to it than the 4.8% that he was putting up earlier in the year.

I think fatigue is a very reasonable question with him. Career high in innings now, and his numbers last 6 starts not so great. Bad combo for going forward.

The high number is 10 hr out of 47 fb. It’s in 8 starts.
the low number was 1 hr in 21 fb. This is in 6 starts

So 2 things. 1 he’s obviously giving up more homers. But he’s also giving up way more fly balls. 1st 6 starts- 26.3% fb last 8 starts- 35.1% fb.. Which could easily be fatigue- as not able to get the ball down like he was earlier in the season…..
