Dave Cameron: It’s Game 2! It can’t be worse than Game 1!

7:58
Dave Cameron: “Billy Butler is Miguel Cabrera!” *everyone laughs*;*

Comment From Guest
Will Yost even consider switching up his “roles” in the bullpen if he gets 5 solid innings out of Ventura?

8:01
Dave Cameron: He did in the ALCS.

8:01
Comment From Jaack
It can always be worse. You underestimate the power of the Giants to suck fun out of baseball.

8:02
Dave Cameron: Pablo Sandoval is the Reggie Jackson of our generation? Let’s go to the numbers.

Neil Weinberg FanGraphs Q&A – 10/22/14

2:42
Neil Weinberg: Afternoon, all. We’ll get started at 3pm. Fill up the queue with your stats, data, FanGraphs type questions and then anything else related to baseball that might be on your mind.

I’m @NeilWeinberg44 on Twitter if you want to get in touch that way, too.

3:02
Neil Weinberg: Alright, let’s get started.

3:03
Neil Weinberg: Remember that we have live blogs during each world series game if you need more of this kind of thing. I will likely be hosting Saturday/Game 4.

3:04
Comment From mtsw
If AL teams were given the option to forego having a DH (their pitcher must bat) in exchange for being able to play an extra fielder (giving them 10 men in the field at once) would it be worth the tradeoff to do so?

3:04
Neil Weinberg: Let’s do some quick research

3:05
Neil Weinberg: AL DH: .327 wOBA
AL P: .101 wOBA

Dan Szymborski FanGraphs Chat – 10/22/14

12:00
Dan Szymborski: Afternoon, personages of baseballiary interests.

12:00
Comment From Los
I want your opinion on this more than anyone else since you actually do projections. I started asking this last week when the Royals were up 3-0 against the Orioles and it has picked up some steam. At what point would the Royals (specifically because of circumstances and resources) trade their current playoff position for Mike Trout’s contract? They were about 60% WS favorites then and 40% now. If not, what is the line where you would take the players?

12:00
Dan Szymborski: That was some quicik typing.

12:01
Dan Szymborski: I don’t think they would. Winning the World Series is just a really big deal among fans.

12:02
Dan Szymborski: Dunno, never really thought much about it. It’s actually a bit tougher for me to not make this trade than most, but I’m glad it’s not a realistic one to have to do.

NotGraphs live chat is going strong, you guys are slackers over here!

8:05
Dave Cameron: They have to get all their comments out before they die.

8:05
Comment From Pale Hose
Cameron is promising fun and Cistulli is promising melancholy. Still don’t know which to choose

8:06
Dave Cameron: If the team you’re rooting for starts losing, melancholy is probably your best bet.

Dave Cameron FanGraphs Chat – 10/20/14

11:43
Dave Cameron: So, due to a scheduling conflict, you won’t get your regular Monday Szymborski fix. He and I traded days this week, though, so if you’re missing your Dan time, you don’t have to wait another week. That does mean you’re stuck with me today, though.

12:00
Dave Cameron: Okay, we’ll get this chat started.

12:01
Comment From a Guest
Thanks for chatting Dan! What can we make of Jake Peavy’s free agency after a bifurcated year? 3/40 about right, and if so who bites at that price?

12:03
Dave Cameron: I’m not Dan, and I don’t think Peavy will get anything close to 3/40. Steamer projects him as about a +1 WAR pitcher for 2015, and he just posted the worst xFIP of his career.

12:03
Dave Cameron: Wild guess: I’d probably think he’s in line for something like the 2/20ish deal that Arroyo/Hudson/others got last winter.

12:04
Comment From _David_
Does your discussion of the Royals and the value of mediocrity make the Cano signing look any better for the Mariners?

NLCS Game Five Live Blog

August Fagerstrom: Hi everyone! It’s me, August. I’ll be here chatting with you tonight

8:01
August Fagerstrom: I’m here! Let’s talk baseball, or other things if you guys want to talk about other things too

8:03
August Fagerstrom: Giants

8:04
Comment From Pale Hose
What other things can we talk about?

8:04
August Fagerstrom: Literally anything! The world is yours. We had a nice little discussion on hypothetical animal fights last time, I believe it was a Moose vs. a Jaguar, but some got mad at me for staying on that topic for so long, so maybe let’s shy away from that (Well aware I just opened up a can of worms).

8:05
Comment From Jaack
Wouldn’t the correct answer be neither team is currently winning?

8:05
August Fagerstrom: Oh, you.

8:06
Comment From Eric G
O/U on Wainright’s innings?

8:06
August Fagerstrom: Am I just setting, predicting or both? He hasn’t gone 5 yet, so I’ll set it at 5.5 and take the over

Wil Myers projection for next year and beyond.

12:01
Eno Sarris: Without looking, I still like him for like .275/.360 25 homers next year, with a peak of .280+, 30+. We’ll be talking about that Shields trade forever.

12:01
Comment From Vslyke
Enooooo, let’s talk about La Stella. Not the debut I wanted as a Braves fan, but where do you see his future going? Can he hold off Gosselin and Peraza?

Neil Weinberg FanGraphs Q&A – 10/15/14

2:44
Neil Weinberg: Hey, we’ll get started at 3pm, but go ahead about post your questions now! Remember this chat is designed to help you understand the site, our data, and sabermetrics, but pretty much anything else baseball related is welcome. There’s also a game in an hour, so you’re welcome to hang out for the first few innings of that as well.

I’m @NeilWeinberg44 on Twitter if you’re looking for me throughout the week.

3:02
Neil Weinberg: Alright, let’s chat!

3:02
Comment From Mr Skeptic
Pitch framing. All of the work being done by various sites seems to indicate that framing is potentially a massive piece of the catcher’s defensive value puzzle. I do think that the good framers and bad framers are accurately reflected with the work being done but it’s the overall value I have trouble wrapping my head around. How much do you “believe” in the numbers that there are catchers out there capable of providing 2-3 wins of value on framing alone?

3:04
Neil Weinberg: I think this is still an open question. I believe that 2-3 wins is possible, but I don’t think we’ve fully resolved exactly the right way to measuring framing. It’s a real skill and one that influences the game, but I’m not sure if we have perfectly estimated the value of stealing a strike or if we’ve properly divided the credit between pitchers and catchers. We’re only a couple of years into real framing research and the data is less than a decade old. Room to grow.

3:05
Comment From Yosted
There seems to be a lot of disagreement on how much defense should weight into WAR. Have any regression analyses been performed to see what weighting most highly correlates with team success?

3:06
Neil Weinberg: I am blanking on who wrote about this recently, but I’m pretty sure the results suggested we are actually undervaluing defense slightly in WAR.

Jeff Sullivan FanGraphs Chat — 10/14/14

9:03
Jeff Sullivan: hello there friends

9:03
Jeff Sullivan: everybody in the mood to live baseball chat?

9:03
Jeff Sullivan: Let’s see how this goes!

9:03
Comment From Guest
What exactly is a hung pitch? Is it just location, is it grip, or is it something else?

9:04
Jeff Sullivan: Generally speaking, a hung pitch is a non-fastball that ends up higher in the strike zone than was intended. It can be because a ball didn’t spin right out of the hand, or maybe you released it too early, or whatnot

9:05
Jeff Sullivan: Jean Machi arguably hung a splitter to Oscar Taveras. Even though the pitch was down in the zone, it was supposed to be in the dirt, and Machi missed up by a couple of feet. So Taveras was able to get the bat head around
