Contract Crowdsourcing 2022-23: Ballot 10 of 11

Free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series. As in other recent seasons, FanGraphs is once again facilitating a contract crowdsourcing project, with the idea being to harness the wisdom of the crowd to better understand and project the 2022-23 free-agent market.

In recent years, we’ve added a few features to these ballots based on reader feedback. You now have the option to indicate that a player will only receive a minor-league contract, or won’t receive one at all. And new this year, if there is a player option, team option, or opt out in a player’s contract, you’ll be able to indicate whether you think he will remain with his current team or become a free agent. Numbers are prorated to full season where noted. The projected WAR figures are from the first cut of the 2023 Steamer600 projections with the exception of Koudai Senga’s, which comes courtesy of ZiPS.

Below are ballots for 10 of this year’s free agents — in this case, a group of starting pitchers.

Syndergaard was just worth 2.2 WAR and he has never had less WAR than that in a full season in his career and he is only 30. Sure, his velocity is down and he probably will never be a 6 WAR pitcher again (or even a 4 WAR pitcher), but how is his projection 0.0?

Gotta be a mistake I could see him projected at 2 war.

Must be that the playing time estimator or whatever spit out that he’ll only pitch 10 innings or something.

Yup, something goofy happened. It looks like the projection is interacting with the postseason depth charts and Philly’s use of him in relief in a way that has messed up his anticipated innings. The ballot should reflect the changes a little later this evening, but he’s projected for around 2 WAR with more representative playing time. Thanks for spotting that.
