Dan Szymborski FanGraphs Chat – 1/21/19
| 12:02 |
: Welcome to HolidayChat
| 12:03 |
: We have a light schedule on the site today, but since I messed up my chat last week, I didn’t want to miss two!
| 12:03 |
: What would a reasonable return be for Joc Pederson from the White Sox?
| 12:03 |
: Let’s see a useful but limited player with two (I think) arb years
| 12:04 |
: Maybe one interesting guy somewhere at the back of hte top 150?
| 12:05 |
: Maybe someone like Basabe?
| 12:05 |
: Most realistic targets for the Orioles in free agency?
| 12:05 |
: Nothing hopefully!
| 12:05 |
: I guess they could give out a pillow deal or two
| 12:06 |
: Maybe Carter Capps or someone like that?
| 12:06 |
: All is right with the world…a Dan chat on Monday!
| 12:06 |
: That’s a poor metric for what’s right in the world.
| 12:06 |
: Do you feel more positive about the general direction the Orioles are going? Or is there scepticism still strong as long at Pete Angelos may still have a say…
| 12:07 |
: I’m much more positive. And The Peter’s voice has weakened considerably.
| 12:07 |
: It was getting a bit chili without our Dan chats
| 12:07 |
: No beans about it!
| 12:07 |
: Moustakas to the Padres?
| 12:07 |
: I still think they gave up on Myers at third too soon.
| 12:08 |
: I don’t think you should give up on these types of experiments without even giving it a go in a full spring training
| 12:09 |
: We can use host avatars now!
| 12:09 |
: Though a GIF didn’t work
| 12:09 |
: There, I ‘ll just be Andy Reid Taft for this chat
| 12:09 |
: Can the projection systems that use minor league stats be used to project how a big leaguer would do in the minor leagues? And if so could you project a Mike Trout season in the California League?
| 12:09 |
: Would require some reverse engineering, but it’s possible
| 12:10 |
: What are your three top books any baseball nut should read to get a handle on the modern baseball industry?
| 12:10 |
: It really depends on what someone is interested in.
| 12:11 |
: For example, John Helyar’s Lords of the Realm is solid for anyone interested in labor part or Baseball and Billions for the economics
| 12:11 |
: I think you’re going to have to face it that Wednesday afternoon chatting is never going to work for you
| 12:11 |
: Yeah, i was running ZiPS and I worked right through two
| 12:11 |
: Padres really a mystery team in the Machado sweepstakes?
| 12:11 |
: Skeptical
| 12:11 |
: What baseball blogs do you read?
| 12:12 |
: Generally, I’m all over the place
| 12:12 |
: Who is the best Padre in ZiPS this year?
| 12:12 |
: Wellt hat’s cheating
| 12:12 |
: With Danny Salazar looking likely to report late for Spring Training do you think that finally kills the idea that the Indians would trade Kluber?
| 12:12 |
: I think they still do it if there’s a benefit. Even without Salazar, I’m not sure that an OF equivalent of Kluber isn’t more valuable than the actual Kluber
| 12:14 |
: Dan – can you talk to some important people and make baseball season start?
| 12:14 |
: I think important people would rather do the opposite of things I like.
| 12:14 |
: A brutally cold day Dan…what is a preferred lunch on a day like this? best comfort food ?
| 12:14 |
: Whatever I can make without effort!
| 12:14 |
: After this weekend of NFL missed calls I don’t look so bad now do I?
| 12:15 |
: You’ve got serious Career Value at sucking.
| 12:15 |
: Do you predict Moose makes it in this year?
| 12:15 |
: No. The “private” votes tend to be kinda craptacular
| 12:15 |
: I think he ends up around 70% and gets in next year.
| 12:15 |
: It surprises me too, but Larry Walker may actually get in before he falls off, which I did not envision
| 12:15 |
: Where are the two most likely locations for expansion? Where are the two location you want to see MLB expanded to? (Even if it’s not feasible)
| 12:16 |
: I would get Portland and Vegas more likely, I’d want to see a NC team and another team in NY in an ideal world
| 12:16 |
: Which Orlando Arcia will we be closer to in 2019? The unplayable version from the first four months of 2018, or the not terirble
| 12:16 |
: Somehwat better, but there are serious issues.
| 12:16 |
: I feel like the way to fix the “problem” that seems like might be emerging with free agency and spending is quite simple. Shorten pre-arb by a year, knock 2 years off of arbitration, lower the minimum salary, and create some incentive to sign a player to a deal that might cover at least those 2 years of arb that I did away with (easier said than done, I get it). Obviously, this type of change can only be made with the players giving something up – as required in all negotiations/compromises – but why is this so difficult to grasp? Pay players closer to their value while they’re producing their value, and thus remove the problem of teams not wanting to over pay/over commit in those later years.
| 12:16 |
: Honestly, the arb numbers aren’t that big, you can’t get *that* much of the pie growth.
| 12:17 |
: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if players want to see their share go up, there need to be more revenues that are sensitive to a team’s wins or perceived wins
| 12:17 |
: What is the best case scenario for the Padres?
| 12:18 |
: Well, everybody’s got a best case scenario over 90 wins. I hate the term best case scenario because there’s no agreement on what percentile a result it’s referring to
| 12:18 |
: Is Rowdy Telliz a legit threat to take away at bats from Justin Smoak? Is Telliz a legit prospect?
| 12:18 |
: I don’t think he’ll take away at bats from Smoak
| 12:19 |
: YOu don’t release him or anything, but you’re talking about a guy who, for all intents and purposes, has kinda sucked against AAA pitchers.
| 12:20 |
: Even in the much-better 2018, he’s a guy without much defensive value and a .750ish OPS in AAA isn’t that great, even in the IL as opposed to the PCL
| 12:21 |
: “It’s [sic] seems every day now someone is making up a new analytical tool to devalue players, especially free agents.” –Evan Longoria. How common among players do you think that attitude is ? Plenty of players have benefited from chances they got or tweaks they made that they owe to analytics, even if it’s true that no one is paying for the Chris Carters of the world who would have gotten bank in the dark ages.
| 12:21 |
: It’s a frustrating situation
| 12:21 |
: It’s not their job to be analytical about this process really; these are guys that see their friends and colleagues getting a lot less money than they expected and they wonder where they’re going to be
| 12:22 |
: What are your thoughts on Odubel Herrera? Can he regain an everyday role or will Quinn steal some at bats this year?
| 12:22 |
: Still his job, though he’ll see ABs
| 12:22 |
: How many games do the Padres need to win this year before it’s smart to start spending on them? (Besides Myers and Hosmer, obv)
| 12:22 |
: 80?
| 12:22 |
: Any way Luis Urias can be a ROY candidate this season?
| 12:22 |
: Why not?
| 12:23 |
: After an acceptable (but unremarkable) AAA stint followed by a solid MLB debut in ’16, Alex Reyes had a 2017 ZiPS projection of 103+ ERA and 1.8 WAR for ’18. Real life 2017 was in rehab, and ZiPS followed with a consistent 105+/1.4. However, another rehab year including four dominant MiLB starts in 2018 now result in a 98+/WAR. There’s something happenin’ here, what it is ain’t exactly clear.
| 12:23 |
: ZiPS gives a bigger penalty for a second injury-filled season than the first. I’d have to run the projections on the exact same build that 2017 ZiPS was projected with to get a comparison
| 12:24 |
: still no wRC+ or FIP- on ZiPS? what gives?
| 12:24 |
: We haven’t quite aligned what ZiPS is using for wRC and FIP as FG, so I don’t want to create confusion when the numbers are slightly different.
| 12:24 |
: What is Dave Cameron doing now?
| 12:24 |
: Working?
| 12:25 |
: What are the odds the MLB adopts some sort of Restricted Free Agency model in lieu of arbitration? 3 years at minimum (salary should probably go up), year 4 RFA, year 5 RFA, year 6 RFA, year 7 full FA. You get to keep the control, but can’t restrict the costs as much, possibly? This model might require any time spent on an MLB roster to equal 1 year of service instead of an accumulation of days, but the ramifications would probably be huge.
| 12:25 |
: I’m not sure it gives much of a benefit.
| 12:25 |
: Mychal Givens will probably traded in July… Should the Orioles move him now to maximize value?
| 12:25 |
: Might wait until the last of the interesting relievers is off the market
| 12:25 |
: Over/Under Judge + Stanton combined 90 HRs in 2019
| 12:25 |
: Under
| 12:25 |
: any plans for more advanced stats to be available in DMB program? Thanks
| 12:26 |
: No idea, would have to ask the DMB guys!
| 12:26 |
: Does Gerrit Cole take yet another step forward this year? Is he the next Scherzer?
| 12:26 |
: I think two steps forward of that magnitude would be damned hard.
| 12:26 |
: Doesn’t Adam Jones and the Giants make sense at this point? Other than the Braves, Blue Jays, and Indians, where else may he land?
| 12:26 |
: Not particularly. Jones isn’t really a CF and Oracle Park has a BIG frigging outfield
| 12:27 |
: In fact, I think SF would be one of the worst destinations for Jones.
| 12:27 |
: He’d be more useful somewhere like Cleveland
| 12:28 |
: Or Colorado
| 12:28 |
: But we know why Colorado won’t happen…
| 12:28 |
:
| 12:29 |
: What would a reasonable return be for Joc Pederson from the Braves?
Gohara? |
| 12:29 |
: I think Gohara’s a bit steep
| 12:29 |
: Though I like Gohara, so maybe I’m biased
| 12:30 |
: Maybe someone like Kyle Muller?
| 12:30 |
: Are you worried about Jose Ramirez’s 2nd half?
| 12:30 |
: No
| 12:30 |
: Any chance the Rangers are the mystery team for Machado?
| 12:30 |
: Long shot.
| 12:30 |
: Is this the right time for the Padres to make a “big splash”? Or should they wait for some ML production from their prospects?
| 12:31 |
: If it’s a true big splash, like a Machado or Harper, then yeah, you can’t get those guys at any old time
| 12:31 |
: But if big splash means just a few mid-market guys, meh.
| 12:31 |
: Would you trade senzel?
| 12:31 |
: No.
| 12:32 |
: Though you could make the argument that the Reds have haplessly got themselves pot committed for 2019.
| 12:33 |
: I think they’ve hot-shot themselves to an 80-win-ish team, so there’s no value to pushing the rest of the chips
| 12:34 |
: They’ve put themselves in a position where to actually finish this OMG LETS GO FOR IT IN 2019, they’re practically forced to either trade a few actual crown jewels
| 12:34 |
: Or sit back and watch the rotation improve to mediocre, Puig be overrated, and Kemp getting way too many ABs and canceling out the benefit
| 12:35 |
: I’m not convinced that a 3B-LF-RF combination of Suarez-Kemp-Puig is actually an improvement on Senzel-Suarez-Winker.
| 12:36 |
: Now, they could play Winker over Kemp, but I’m not sure they have the guts to do that
| 12:36 |
: Are we having a lighting round this week?
| 12:36 |
: Sure
| 12:36 |
: Related – Mike Trout in the Pecos League OOTP sim: https://msabr.com/2018/01/28/if-mike-trout-played-the-rest-of-his-care…
| 12:36 |
: Is this is the most Padres talk since Kurt Bevacqua?
| 12:37 |
: Who ends up as the Royals closer? Why, yes, this is a vital question.
| 12:37 |
: I would imagine Peralta
| 12:37 |
: Does Jesse Winker get full playing time? I love his plate skills
| 12:37 |
: I hope so, but the Reds are close to the Rockies than the Astros/Indians in philosophy
| 12:37 |
: It’s 2019. Nobody cares about OPS and ERA+
| 12:38 |
: Lots of people do.
| 12:38 |
: Is there a reason why you refuse to provide BB%, K%, wRC+, FIP-, et al columns in this year’s ZiPS?
| 12:38 |
: How many times EVER has OPS+ vs. wRC+ drastically changed how you feel about a player?
| 12:39 |
: And ERA+ vs. ERA-, the order stays the same.
| 12:39 |
: The exact statistics chosen are fairly meaningless – what the numbers mean is more crucial than what the numbers are and I always choose the simplest measure that gets the job done.
| 12:39 |
: Would you have done a strategic HOF vote this year, like skip Rivera or Halladay to vote for somebody who might slip off the ballot?
| 12:40 |
: Yes. I would not have voted for Rivera.
| 12:40 |
: And since I’d vote at the end to take advantage of information, I wouldn’t vote for Halladay either.
| 12:40 |
: If fault is assigned for them not being on the ballot, I see it as a fault of the Hall’s design.
| 12:41 |
: Does ZiPS still see Joe Panik as a 3-WAR player?
| 12:41 |
: Well now you’re just cheating
| 12:41 |
: Pause the chat Dan. I’m gonna go grab lunch. I’ll be back in 20 or so…I’ll let you know when you can start it back up.
| 12:41 |
: I look pretty good as well after this weekend……and please buy my albums “Blue Cowboy” and “Diamond Dreams” at your nearest flea market.
| 12:41 |
: West wouldn’t even have admitted the call was wrong
| 12:41 |
: He’d double down
| 12:41 |
: and hold grudges against everybody forever
| 12:42 |
:
| 12:42 |
: At this point, I have obnoxious images for most situations
| 12:42 |
: Any hint at which team’s ZIPS release are next?
| 12:42 |
: One of the teams that hasn’t gone yet!
| 12:44 |
: It was -46 Celsius so -51 Fahrenheit. Warm me up with a wicked baseball factoid
| 12:44 |
: This was a patented baseball thing for catchers.
| 12:44 |
:
| 12:44 |
: Do see the Twins having a potent offense in 2019? To me they have some various pathways to their lineup that is not dependent just on Buxton, or Sano coming to forecasts a few seasons ago. Pitching, seemingly is trailing the offense but they seem to have advanced closer to Indians. Thoughts?
| 12:45 |
: I think they’re middle of the pack. I expected them to be more aggressive in free agency than they have been
| 12:45 |
: Any update and additional love for my teammate Brent Honeywell for 2019?
| 12:46 |
: Last I heard on Honeywell, he was throging bullpens
| 12:46 |
: throwing
| 12:46 |
: throging?
| 12:46 |
: g isn’t even next to w
| 12:46 |
: Do you think there’s any chance the Pirates enter the market for some of the remaining mid-tier FA left? Moustakas seems like he’d make a lot of sense as an upgrade over Colin Moran.
| 12:46 |
: I just don’t think Moustakas is all that good
| 12:46 |
: Why doesn’t the union or MLB leadership do something about how relief pitchers are used up and spit out? I think of someone like Mike Matheny who was nicknamed the Meatgrinder.
| 12:46 |
: I’m not sure how you fix that honestly
| 12:47 |
: What are your thoughts on what Lamet looks like when/if he returns this year?
| 12:47 |
: Probably similar to how he looked before, but a year older. I guess he could change his beard.
| 12:47 |
: What position would Jones play in Colorado? Catcher?
| 12:47 |
: LF hopefully
| 12:47 |
: What do you think of Kris Bryant this season? Ramifications of his shoulder injury?
| 12:48 |
: I’m cuatiously optimistic after a winter of recovery. But there is some risk.
| 12:48 |
: Ok, Dan. I’m back. You can resume the chat.
| 12:48 |
: Thgere was no way that was 20 minutes
| 12:48 |
: I can’t imagine how much less interest I would have in baseball if a single team had been as successful as the Patriots have been for the last almost 20 years – ESPECIALLY if that team was in the same division as my team. Do you think the Patriots are a good argument for sports leagues to strive for parity?
| 12:48 |
: It’s kinda weird, so many pundits complain about MLB’s parity and then worship the NFL
| 12:49 |
: And NFL has that built in equalizer of injuries being more severe
| 12:49 |
: Why doesn’t this work?Blue jays sign Machado for his asking price, Guirrelle plays second, Manny gets to play 2nd and Vlad gets to play third until eventually Manny moves back to third and Vlad over to 1st.
| 12:49 |
: Well, the Blue Jays probably don’t want to pay it.
| 12:49 |
: Is it weird that I immediately think of Shawn Kemp rather than Matt? I wonder what the Reign Man is up to these days.
| 12:49 |
: I also think of Shawn Kemp first
| 12:50 |
: Relevant for incentivising winning
| 12:50 |
: What is the most under-rated percussive instrument for rock drummers?
| 12:50 |
: xylophone
| 12:50 |
: What other instrument instantly evokes skeletons?
| 12:51 |
: When FG eventually folds ZiPS into Depth Charts projections, I know they manually adjust playing time. But beyond that, is it an average of ZiPS/Steamer? Manual picking & choosing? Different or uniform across players?
| 12:51 |
: I believe it’s an average
| 12:51 |
:
| 12:51 |
: Tony Skee-a-vone!
| 12:51 |
: Do not look throging up on urban dictionary
| 12:51 |
: oh god
| 12:52 |
: OK, it’s not a thing. You sir/ma’am (probably sir) are a liar.
| 12:52 |
: Wouldn’t baseball be better if instead of the catcher throwing the ball back to the pitcher, there was an underground ball return like in bowling? We could call it the Mackey Sasser.
| 12:52 |
: If you want to reduce strikeout rates, make the pitchers hold all the baseballs
| 12:52 |
: They have to go out to the mound with a backpack full of baseballs.
| 12:53 |
: And if they run out of baseballs, the batters gets a ball called for every additional ball the pitcher needs to get through the inning
| 12:53 |
: OK, terrible idea, but is it any worse than starting an extra inning with a magic runner ons econd?
| 12:53 |
: Do you think MLB and it’s TV affiliates were paying attention to the response to Romo? Will it make a difference?
| 12:54 |
: No doubt they’ll say “You know what Tony Romo proves? Sabermetrics are terrible and all color guys should be recently retired players. CALL UP A.J. PIERZYNSKI!”
| 12:54 |
: It was 11 minutes, Dan. And you couldn’t even help a brotha out with a chat-pause. Selfish.
| 12:54 |
: I never said I was a hero.
| 12:54 |
: Where will Curtis Granderson be flying to in mid February?
| 12:54 |
: In a plane?
| 12:54 |
: I’m planting my seed somewhere or lookin’ for rock.
| 12:54 |
: Does the current Angels roster have enough to get Trout to October?
| 12:54 |
: They can, but they need some things to break their ways
| 12:54 |
: Steak-umms..the “umms” to me represents..”umm do I want to eat this? What is it?” whereas Steak-mmms..means “mmm it is good.” You should contact their marketing department ASAP.
| 12:55 |
: If a batter was told exactly what pitch is coming (including intended location) such as “slider, down and away on the black” or “4 seamer, at the letters”, whose pitch would STILL have the lowest wOBA?
| 12:55 |
: Knuckler?
| 12:55 |
: Is Scott Schebler a capable CF or should the Reds get someone better?
| 12:55 |
: He’s been suprisingly non-terribad. I’d want a fourth outfielder that can play CF well.
| 12:55 |
: I know you aren’t a fan of sir Ausmur. Will he be the one holding LAA back?
| 12:56 |
: Not really. He’ll give away more games at the margins, but in fairness — and I haven’t always been fair — he’s still young for a manager and could learn in a different environment
| 12:56 |
: A 4th OF who can play CF well? Isn’t that Billy Hamilton?
| 12:57 |
: The whole thing was weird. You stick with Hamilton for so long and only now, when you want to have a risk-averse OHMUHGERD LETS GO FOR IT YEAR you don’t pay a few millionf or his glove?
| 12:57 |
: Berrios or Buehler?
| 12:57 |
: Buehler
| 12:57 |
: Where do you suppose Keuchel ends up? Most likely/in the mix/long shot
| 12:58 |
: There aren’t a lot of strong connections for where he WILL go, at least that have leaked yet
| 12:58 |
: I’d like to see the Brewer or Angels bring him in
| 12:58 |
: s
| 12:58 |
: Rumors today of Dodgers talking with Pirates about acquiring Marte to fit their right-handed batter needs; he’s healthier than Pollock, doesn’t cost a pick, but probably costs Verdugo. Worth it despite the PED history?
| 12:58 |
: I don’t think the Dodgers do it if it requires verdugo.
| 12:59 |
: UZR seems to spit out a narrower spread of player values, while DRS appears to have a wider range of player outcomes from top to bottom. Do you think one or the other is “more right” in their assessment or that the truth is somewhere inbetween?
| 12:59 |
: It’s hard to say since you never get told what the truth is. I suspect the DRS measures are a bit high on the magnitude side
| 1:00 |
: What is the juiciest industry insight/rumor/development that you were privy to before it became known publicly?
| 1:02 |
: I kinda knew about the Lucchino/Epstein friction before it was commonly known and didn’t realize until later what I had stumbled on at the time.
| 1:02 |
: What’s with all the sarcastic answers today? Is it the cold or working on a holiday?
| 1:02 |
: It’s the Dan Szymborski chat.
| 1:02 |
: I read that as Burritos or Buehler and was surprised by your answer
| 1:02 |
: if you are Mark Reynolds and you don’t get a major league offer this year, do you go take millions to play in Korea?
| 1:03 |
: I would. He would rock the KBO if he’s not too old
| 1:03 |
: Are you surprised that San Diego hasn’t been connected to Kyle Seager in trade rumors?
| 1:03 |
: Not really, he’s got that same decline as Headley and the team had no interest in playing him much
| 1:03 |
: Are you buying into Adalberto Mondesi’s 2nd half breakout, or was it a product of late-season baseball and some luck?
| 1:03 |
: I’m buying it, but I’m not taking a secured loan for the funds
| 1:04 |
: Berrios or Mikolas?
| 1:04 |
: Berrios
| 1:04 |
: Assuming the Cubs FO isn’t being facetious when they say they won’t go after any big free agents, why do you think they refuse to spend despite their window closing?
