Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 11/13/14
11:47 |
: will be here shortly. in the meantime, Cults. Because xylophone.
|
11:47 |
:
|
12:01 |
: I’m here!
|
12:01 |
Anyway you consider taking someone OTHER than Trout #1 overall in 2015? |
12:01 |
: Nope!
|
12:02 |
Your thoughts on the Cervelli-Wilson trade? |
12:03 |
: I’m surprised they got a fireballing lefty for Cervelli, actually. Seems like they must value Cervelli for something that doesn’t quite show up on the stat sheet yet. Oh look at that. 12th in framing by extra calls per game.
|
12:03 |
ENO! Finally got my hands on a bottle of Pliny the Elder. Just as good as I expected. What’s your favorite IPA? Double IPA? |
12:05 |
: Awesome! It is… classic. I keep reaching for the new thing. Toppling Goliath pseudo Sue’s probably my favorite APA. Is Alpine’s Nelson an IPA? I’ll go with that. And then Double Jack is my desert island DIPA, but there are others that belong in the convo.
|
12:05 |
Trying to turn Michael Brantley into Puig in a keep forever league. Good move? I’m still a little cautious with Puig moving forward. |
12:05 |
: I do this and then I do this again.
|
12:05 |
How much will the market be for one WAR? Last year it was around 6M, I believe. Will it be closer to 7M? |
12:06 |
: I’m using seven in my head. TV money blew this thing up a bit, so half million inflation seems too low.
|
12:06 |
Where do you think Yan Gomes will rank among catchers next season? I’m in a mixed league and I have the chance to keep him for $1. That screams NO BRAINER, right? |
12:06 |
: Always worth that lotto ticket.
|
12:07 |
went from the bottom to the top. Hit the top mark in Canada on the Chartered Accountant designation and now I’m running a 45 mil organization. Think I need a celebration beer, what’s the best beer in Canada? |
12:07 |
http://www.beergraphs.com/l… but perhaps you should thank the Black Hand of God Stout. http://www.beergraphs.com/l…
: Congratulations! This says you have to get a Driftwood |
12:08 |
What’s Nolan Arenado’s fantasy ceiling at 3B in a keeper league? Top three, top five? |
12:09 |
: Last year Beltre was fourth with a .324/19 season which is totally within Arenado’s grasp. I think he could sneak into the top three in his few peak power seasons.
|
12:09 |
Would eating some of Cris Johnson’s contract and sending him La Stella Gattis to the Rays for Hellickson and Zobrist make sense for both teams? |
12:11 |
: I’m not quite sure how to prognosticate on potential trade rumors in Tampa. Gattis is not a great catcher, but he does have some positional felxibility, which the Rays seem to value. La Stella gives them years of control, and turfing Johnson might give the Braves the chance to spend something. But I doubt it.
|
12:11 |
Do you think Steven Souza is as good as his projections suggest? What sort of offer would it take to pry him away from the Nats crowded OF situation? |
12:12 |
: One year he led the AFL in velocity off the bat according to Trackman, so I believe in the power numbers. But the projection for a 21% strikeout rate… that seems low. I’ll take the over on that and therefore the under on his average and on-base percentage. The Nats need… an infielder?
|
12:13 |
Out of Heyward, J-Up, and Evan “Oso Blanco” Gattis – who should I trade this offseason? |
12:13 |
: Upton probably best return, but if you could get anywhere close to Upton return by pimping the years of control on Gattis, trade him.
|
12:14 |
: Because of age, he just doesn’t have any projection left, and his flaws rob his bat of value.
|
12:14 |
Lucifer, Son of the Morning, I’m gonna chase you outta Earth… |
12:14 |
BOOYAH! |
12:15 |
OH SNAP, ITS ENO http://38.media.tumblr.com/… |
12:15 |
: Phew! That last one came just in time.
|
12:16 |
Can Christian Colon become a productive 5 x 5 fantasy league player? |
12:16 |
: I’m not very hopeful.
|
12:16 |
Is it just me or is Celebration Ale the same thing as Torpedo? |
12:16 |
: At least it’s wetter.
|
12:16 |
My dad just traded Lynn, Wong and a mid #1 pick of all the players to debut in MLB this year (Chris Taylor? Souza? McHugh? Baez?) for Goldschmidt. I told him that Lynn was closer to a 3.50 ERA guy than a 3.00 and that prospects are just prone to bust at a certain %. Goldy’s for real. Did I steer him right or wrong? |
12:17 |
: Yeah I’d do this. Lynn still doesn’t have a pitch for lefties. Goldschmidt’s probably the best NL player next year.
|
12:17 |
Cameron thought that the Cuddyer signing could be a sign of signings to come (with draft pick out of the way now). Does Sandy have some rocks to spend, or is Dave just being too logical for reality? |
12:19 |
: I just don’t see a great fit with the qualifying offers out there. I mean they really going to pony up for Hanley? I know people have talked about Robertson, and if they could buy him for less than 4/40 and save 7-10 million on Mejia and Familia by keeping them away from saves, that might be okay. But Robertson wants Papelbon money…
|
12:19 |
In a keep forever points league that benefits power more than average, going after Rizzo instead of Freeman is the way to go, right? |
12:19 |
: Yes.
|
12:19 |
Move Kipnis to COF with Ramirez at 2B (or Drew), Lindor at SS, and maybe Headley for 3B. Does this solve CLE’s defensive problems? |
12:19 |
: They are not going to spend that money.
|
12:19 |
Who’s the better pitcher over the next three years, Kennedy, Cashner or Ross? |
12:19 |
: Per IP, Cashner for me. Once you factor in IP, maybe Ross. He’s most likely to stay in SD that whole time.
|
12:20 |
Where do I go and how do I do? |
12:21 |
: Crowdsourced for 4/52, I kinda feel like fewer years but higher AAV coming. People won’t forget the PED suspension, and post PED guys generally get shorter deals. Toronto might need him most.
|
12:21 |
What’s your favorite Evil Twin offering? I just had the nomad weisse and it was amazing. |
12:21 |
: It might be the Bikini Beer just because that’s a lot of taste for 3.5%. But I also like Biscotti Break.
|
12:21 |
So who gets to be the first to ask how happy you are that Kluber won the Cy? |
12:22 |
: It’s pretty cool. If he’d been an amazing interview, though, this day would be like beaming ear to ear good.
|
12:22 |
San Diego Beer week is a good good good thing |
12:22 |
: Yeah I’m coming next year.
|
12:22 |
Why is Sandoval so over rated? I know he has a good history of hitting in the post season, but over the last 2 seasons he has hit .279 .332 .416 with avg defense.. Plus lets face it, he has a soft body as well. |
12:23 |
: If you want a third baseman, it’s him, Headley…. or Kevin Kouzmanoff. Or Hanley I guess. Anyway, lots of reasons to look at his past jenky-eyed, I’m gathering them up for the signing reaction.
|
12:23 |
Who is the next person that Cistulli’s magic will propel to super stardom? |
12:24 |
: He was all over Jace Peterson first, if Jace works it out.
|
12:24 |
Which teams have the money and prospects to trade for Tulo? |
12:24 |
: And the need? Dodgers.
|
12:24 |
Will Houston make a splash this offseason? Can they be the underdogs for David Robertson? |
12:25 |
: They’ll do the same thing again. Talk to everyone, sign the guy that matches their value best. Doubt it’s a reliever, but could be. Their pick is protected anyway.
|
12:25 |
I happen to think Dan Duquette is a pretty smart guy. So tell me why he is about to spend $40M+ on Nick Markakis. Is there any upside in that deal for the Orioles? Why not spend a few more bucks and go for Tomas? |
12:25 |
: I guess the upside, particularly wrt Tomas, is floor. For a team that’s competitive now, the fact that Markakis *should* have a one-win floor is pretty good. Now the fact that he has a two-win ceiling is why 4/40 is Super Meh.
|
12:26 |
The signing of cuddyer, maybe not smart, but an indication of perhaps the mets wanting to actually compete this year. Everyone thinks Cuddyer will platoon with Duda at first with lefties, but the only back-up mets outfielders are also lefties (den dekker, kirk). Would billy butler be a sneaky good signing as a RH platoon for first? Or is he likely to be too expensive? |
12:26 |
: Not a good fit for an NL team. I think names like Corey Hart and Ryan Ludwick might make sense though.
|
12:26 |
Where do you see Yankees prospect Aaron Judge, ceiling wise? And when do you think he’ll get called up? 2016? |
12:28 |
: All the reports and the video I’ve seen suggest that his swing is pretty nice for such a large man. I’m watching the strikeout rate. I think he’ll do double-a this year and if he can strike out <22% and ISO over .200, we’re cooking and he’s likely to be up sometime in 2016. At 22, he could even get a cup of coffee next year if he did that in Double-A
|
12:28 |
It’s finally raining here in SF and I have a 1 year old who’s home sick. What should be the beer for lunch? Has to be something kinda easy to find as we’re not driving all over the city. |
12:28 |
: Man I really want Lagunitas Born Yesterday wet hop…
|
12:28 |
Did you bump MadBum up your rankings for next year as a result of the epic postseason run or down your rankings because of all the extra innings? |
12:29 |
: Postseason doesn’t figure in to my rankings, it’s just an extra 15 games at most. I like his consistency and youth, that might push him up, but yes I guess the innings would mitigate that.
|
12:30 |
What are your thoughts on Castillo for 2015? Worth keeping in a keep 12? |
12:30 |
: yes.
|
12:30 |
Who do you like out of thes injured arms next year, Ivan Nova, Pat Corbin, Jarrod Parker, Kris Medlen? |
12:31 |
: Corbin. Best combo of youth and previous health.
|
12:31 |
: (and talent)
|
12:31 |
is rotographs gonna spend 3 weeks on outfielders? and then 2 years on pitchers? |
12:32 |
Then we start the year working on depth chart discussions. |
12:32 |
Will Alpines Nelson get the same distibutions as most Green Flash beers now?, I assume they will obviously have to make way more. |
12:33 |
: Yes but watch the freshness. There’s already whispers about GF’s inconsistent supply chain affecting the freshness.
|
12:33 |
What do you think the Tigers look like in 3 years? Still offensively potent but having to field a patchwork team due to salary commitments? |
12:33 |
: May have to do a total teardown rebuild like when their team got too expensive the last time.
|
12:33 |
I had a daughter 1 week ago. I had my wife agreeing to Simcoe as her middle name, but I nixed it at the last moment because I didnt want to have to explain the name to everyone |
12:34 |
: Yup. I was pushing Sauvin but she didn’t like that aspect either.
|
12:34 |
How long before your baseball chat with a little beer chatter here and there becomes a beer chat with a little baseball chatter here and there? |
12:34 |
: The ratio is a little different in the offseason.
|
12:34 |
As an Expos fan hoping for a return, should I be rooting for the Rays to win 50 games? is that related in anyway to a possible move? |
12:34 |
: Fewer fans, more pressure. But they just opened up the stadium search so I doubt it happens.
|
12:35 |
Recent reports mention Jocketty saying Reds are either ‘all-in’ or ‘all-out’ next year. You’re in charge, which path do you take? |
12:38 |
: Let’s see. If there’s a ‘window’ it’s based on Cueto’s contract (last year), Frazier’s years of control (until 17), Bruce contract (16), Chapman years of control (16), Mesoraco control (17), and then Latos (15) and Leake (15). I doubt Latos and Leake get you enough to turn around a farm system. Cueto, Latos, and Leake might, but I’m tempted to go into the season with this roster plus something, and then trade Cueto at the trade deadline, and maybe even Latos too.
|
12:38 |
Whats your opinion on the big trade yesterday, Gose for Travis? |
12:39 |
: Gose is not good in my opinion, but in a platoon with Davis where he does defense and cedes even some lesser righties to Davis, that works cheaply. Travis is supposedly not a good prospect, but the numbers are good and he’s ready to go at a position of need. I think the Jays did well.
|
12:40 |
Speed’s the first thing to go; what player was high atop a SB list this year should we be cautious about going into 2015? |
12:40 |
: Span seems way too high for his age, but that’s sorta obvious. Ellsbury, though, is 31 now. He could drop off!
|
12:41 |
I’m currently in a heated debate regarding whether a SP should be considered for MVP. I’m on the side that says they should, if they put up the type of historical season Kershaw did in ’14. Your thoughts? |
12:42 |
If there was no Cy Young, and it was just ‘best player award’ — like FanGraphs’ award — it’s closer. But I still went Trout. |
12:42 |
Thoughts on Mets signing Melky to leadoff and play LF? You then have Grandy/Duda/Cuddyer platoon. |
12:43 |
: it occurred to me, but that’s an expensive way to fill two spots there. I doubt it.
|
12:43 |
Would a 4 yr $18 million extension make sense for Steve Pearce? For the O’s? |
12:43 |
: I’m not doing it. Dude is leaping out of the box to hit fastballs, and I think that can get exploited. He’s 32, and right-handed. Super low floor.
|
12:43 |
Who is more likely to play 100 MLB games combined over the next 2 years, Buxton or Profar? |
12:43 |
: Profar just because he’s played in the majors before.
|
12:44 |
Better bet next year: Harper or JUp? |
12:45 |
: Great question. Harper is 5 years younger! Projections are decently close, actually, but they have Harper in a full healthy season. If Harper is much cheaper than Upton, and I feel he should be after that stinker, I probably take him based on price.
|
12:45 |
Sounds like the Mets and White Sox are talking. Would Alexei Ramirez for Jonathan Niese work? |
12:48 |
: I’d do that in a second. He’s got a club option for 2016 and at $10m a season, he’s cheap. The White Sox need pitching… I’m just not really a fan of Niese. Average fastball at best, okay cutter, average curveball. Seems like an average lefty at best, and projections have him worse than that. Has somewhere between 5-10 million surplus on him, if you look at this way (and Ramirez would have 10+.
|
12:48 |
Orioles rumored for AJ Burnett. Any good reason to think he’s better than any of the 7 starters the Orioles already have for 2015 (Tillman, Chen, Norris, Gonzalez, Gausman, Jimenez, Bundy)? |
12:49 |
: Well he’s better than one at least. Probably two. Maybe three because Gonzalez I don’t get. And teams need 10 starters to get through the average season…
|
12:49 |
how can you do it once you’ve already done it you won’t have brantley anymore and you will have puig |
12:50 |
: In another league. Or in my head. To the tune of Chariots of Fire.
|
12:50 |
Would you say you scrabbled and scrummed with tiger style determination to get where you are now, or was it more like you kinda started doing it, and people were like, hey, this guy’s pretty good, and a few years later, here you are. |
12:50 |
: I set a goal, worked my ass off, risked my relationships with people, took a leap of faith… and there was a ton of great timing that worked out in my favor.
|
12:51 |
There’s a guy waking down the street looking into every car window. Worrisome. But do I call the police? |
12:51 |
: My dad would. I say just yell at the guy something like Hey I see you. Should spook him.
|
12:51 |
MLB starts tomorrow, who has the best team?? (Remaining FAs can form a team of their own!) |
12:51 |
: Nationals?
|
12:52 |
Keep two of the three: Pence, Cespedes or Betts as my last two keepers in a 10-man league where we keep 7. No contracts or inflation, hitting categories adds 2B and BB on top of 5×5 cats. |
12:53 |
: Ooh I love Betts with BB in there. I’ll take Yoenis in a hitters park over a 32 year old Pence. *Ducks*
|
12:54 |
What do you make of JUp waiving his M’s no trade? Seems like an interesting move after blocking in a couple years ogo. |
12:54 |
: I can’t believe they might trade him for pitching. They always find pitching. I don’t get it.
|
12:55 |
:
|
12:55 |
: Don’t love all their stuff, but do like that song. Don’t care if it’s their most popular.
|
12:55 |
Hey man how’s it going? |
12:55 |
: Good! Tired. Kid got me sick.
|
12:56 |
I had a dream a little while ago that I met you, and you were 18, and I thought, ‘weird! I guess he’s some kind of wunderkind!’ But then I started remembering details from your actual life, and figured you must have started winning leagues at 12 or something. Not sure if I got to remembering that you have a beer site, a wife, kids, and that I’ve met you twice, but regardless, I was relieved when I woke up. |
12:56 |
: one mad lude
|
12:56 |
Have you had delirium tremens? is it worth the price? its like 15.99$ in NYC |
12:56 |
: if you like Belgian styles, yes it’s really good.
|
12:56 |
it’s always better when it’s wetter. |
12:56 |
: Gonna leave that there.
|
12:57 |
I know it’s all swill, more or less, but which of the American macro brews do you prefer when there are no other options (Sam Adams doesn’t count). |
12:57 |
: Stella Artois?
|
12:57 |
Any chance Seattle could trade a middle infielder — Brad Miller or Chris Taylor — to Washington for righthand-hitting outfielder Steven Souza? |
12:57 |
: Those guys are in play, but I think Seattle looking for a more established player.
|
12:57 |
How is Washington only #27 on your list? Ratings be crazy. |
12:58 |
: I’m waiting for a missing brewery or beer to show up. I’ve been cleaning up the origins… But Elysian’s Space Dust didn’t even get first place sooooo
|
12:58 |
Cervelli is under contract for one year. Wilson is controlled for 5. 5 years of quality, controlled LOOGY vs. one year of Cervelli? Seems like NYY won |
12:58 |
: Agreed
|
12:58 |
Ich habe Google Translate für diese! Pretend wie sein bester Witz Sie in einer langen Zeit gehört haben! hahaha |
12:58 |
: HAHAHHA (not bad)
|
12:59 |
In 5×5 roto leagues. How often with the HR leader win the league? over 50%? |
12:59 |
: Damn I had this answer once. I’ll see if I have that old data. Should be able to get it from ottoneu…
|
12:59 |
Stop fighting Too many cooks. You need something to slow down your productivity! |
12:59 |
: WILL NOT WATCH
|
1:00 |
my buddy insists that Felix should have won because of the batting avg against. can you give me one sentence i can say to him to tell him that Kluber was equally as deserving if not more? |
1:00 |
: “Jason Kipnis tweeted that Kluber should have won because of the shoddy defense behind him.”
|
1:00 |
Wong’s odds of growing into an all-star, over/under 50%? |
1:01 |
: Under. I like that the power is starting to look real and bigger than we saw coming up, but ‘real’ could still be league average.
|
1:01 |
Are you rooting for Pat Venditte to sign with a club that will give hima shot?? I really want to see the first switch pitcher |
1:01 |
: Always rooting for him.
|
1:01 |
Currently in Asheville, taking your advice and eating everything in sight. What are your recommendations for good Carolina beers? |
1:02 |
: noDA, Highland and Wicked Weed are the best of a good state IMO.
|
1:02 |
Think it’s worth putting some weird wrinkles into a fantasy league’s scoring system just to make it more difficult to win using projections/guides/expert ratings or is that part of the fun? |
1:02 |
: What you’ll do is separate the high-prep, high-info players from the rest, most likely. So depends. If your league is mostly full of those people, then do it.
|
1:03 |
any Mikellers worth the bucks? |
1:03 |
: Their Brunch Weasel, just don’t read about how it came to be.
|
1:03 |
I quite enjoy wine and horse dressage; I even have established highly theoretical print magazines airily discussing these subjects. |
1:03 |
: If those were blogs, that’s the future.
|
1:04 |
Hallo Eno! Sag mir, wer wird Ihrer Meinung nach der Start SS für die 2015 NYY sein? |
1:04 |
: I’m starting to like this Sexei Ramirez rumor, but the pessimist in me says Flores.
|
1:04 |
have you had the sour bikini? tastes like those limonata sodas |
1:04 |
: Well I like those, but that’s weird for a beer.
|
1:04 |
What’s the deal with wet-hopped IPAs? A place near me had a couple on tap last weekend. |
1:05 |
: They take the hops straight from the field and throw em into the beer. They’re less bitter, more thick and… vegetable like. In a good way.
|
1:05 |
Who is the top FA position player this off-season? |
1:06 |
: It’s probably Hanley, and if it’s for third base, I could get behind it. But based on price, the guy I’m signing is Chase Headley.
|
1:06 |
Whos this “B the Jays picked up? Also related- Pompey Time!! |
1:07 |
: Travis is supposedly a non-prospect, but he makes contact, has a bit of power and speed and can play second. Also, I love Dalton Pompey and absolutely give him a chance to beat out Pillar. Just wish the team had played him more this fall.
|
1:07 |
How much more difficult will it be for the Dodgers to get Tulo, given that it’s an intradivision trade? |
1:08 |
: If you’re rebuilding, and you get the other team’s best prospects… all it would take is a sweetener for me.
|
1:08 |
In real life, did Eric Hosmer come off as much of a stereotypical jock dickhead as he did in your article earlier this year? |
1:09 |
: Honestly, I made a lot of mistakes and deserved a lot of it. And when I asked him a question this offseason, he answered and had ‘smarter’ sounding things to say. So I’d say he’s probably learned a little since mid-2013. I’ve learned a ton.
|
1:09 |
Thoughts on Gose potential to be a league average hitter? Can the Tigers really play him everyday in CF? |
1:09 |
: I think we’ve seen enough from Gose to put his ceiling as a platoon CF that’s glove-first.
|
1:09 |
How high would you go on Yoan Moncada? Castillo money? Thomas money (assuming he breaks the record for Cubans)? |
1:10 |
: I’m not qualified to answer these questions, but I am worried that there will be a few high-profile busts among the guys signing now for big money.
|
1:10 |
What kind of trade value does Javier Baez have? BTW, Steamer has him at only 29.3 K% for 2015–seems low! |
1:10 |
: People still call him a centerpiece. That swinging strike rate and approach make my head hurt though.
|
1:11 |
ENOOOOOOOO! On Dave’s “Free Agent Landmines” article he had Scherzer as the #1 landmine and Shields as a “dishonorable mention,” but didn’t list Lester at all. Is he really less of a landmine than the other two? I ask, because the Cubs are tied more to Lester, but personally I’d rather have Ol’ Blue eye. |
1:11 |
: Seems like all long deals to pitchers are bad ideas. I like Scherzer’s pitches and skill set best of the three anyway.
|
1:12 |
Victory wet hop = amazingly good considering most hops are not grown on east coast |
1:12 |
I’m pretty sure Born Yesterday is gone. I live in Petaluma and could only get it for about two days after it came out. Unless they’re still producing new batches. |
1:12 |
When does bratgraphs launch? |
1:12 |
Isn’t it probably even money that Stanton finishes ahead of Trout next year? |
1:12 |
: Without steals and with a lower batting average? Doubtful.
|
1:13 |
Why is there so little talk about the Nats trying to lock up their post-2015 free agents (Span, Clippard, Desmond, Fister, Zimmermann) now? All the talk seems to be trade related. |
1:13 |
: Because they’re about as win now as it gets.
|
1:13 |
![]() Mets offseason: |
1:13 |
Can we get Zach to post an updated sample calc of his dollar values? |
1:13 |
: Yes. Maybe in FG+, maybe on RG.
|
1:14 |
One other thing: Last week I’d asked for SLO beers, and you recommended Sierra Nevada. I went to school in Chico, it was cheaper to drink SN than High Life, and I still never want to see another SN beer. They all taste the same to me: not good. |
1:14 |
: Ah yes but I bet they have some fun things at the brewery. And I like Celebration. But I was wrong to say that, geography fail. Where did you go?
|
1:14 |
I have convinced my partner to name our children Clark and Addison; two names she quite likes but doesn’t know the real reason I suggested them… |
1:15 |
I’m perfecting a condiment made from a base of smoked malt and cream sauce. Rauch dressing, here we come. |
1:16 |
what should i try tonight when i go in post work? http://ues.theponybar.com/ |
1:17 |
: Abita Andygator, Abita Pecan Harvest and Ninkasi Tricerahops.
|
1:17 |
Just had zombie killer cider. Highly recommended. |
1:17 |
ANTHONY GOSE GONE WILD |
1:17 |
Indians more likely to acquire headley, morse or Rios? |
1:18 |
: None. Well, maybe Rios because they do need to upgrade defense a bit… damn his D has fallen off. Morse because he’s cheapest?
|
1:18 |
Remember when the Blue Jays made a big push to win now and then sad trumpet sound |
1:18 |
: one more chance before blowing it all up
|
1:19 |
wait how do you get a typo of Frank to Frpnk? Or is your real name Fronk or Fr[nk? |
1:19 |
Indians are stuck with Bourn and swisher at dh and c.f.. the weak areas that could be upgraded are chisenhall at 3b and the regrettable Murphy/raburn platoon in right. Who’d you rather upgrade and who would be a fit? |
1:20 |
: I doubt FA is where they go. They need to upgrade D, and if Ramirez can play, Lindor pushing Ramirez to second and Kipnis to COF might solve a lot of this.
|
1:20 |
Two NYM trade questions. Does Jacob DeGrom bring back one of the to young SS prospects – Lindor, Correa, Russell, etc? |
1:20 |
: Yes I think he would. Would they trade him? I think they won’t.
|
1:20 |
What does the posting fee for KANG look like?..does it start with a four followed by a two commas?.. |
1:20 |
: I haven’t heard great things from scout types. But it’ll be enough to buy at least a milion
|
1:21 |
:
|
1:21 |
Texas says it’s looking to trade for pitching. What do they give up? |
1:21 |
: Profar or Odor? If it’s nice young cheap pitching, could happen. But Profar is selling low and Odor’s not a shortstop.
|
1:22 |
How would you rank these three OFs for next year: Corey Dickerson, Mookie, Calhoun? How much would you pay for them in a standard mixed league? |
1:22 |
: Dickerson Calhoun Mookie (last only by playing time issues, ahead of Calhoun in a keeper), but all are decent guys, between 10-20 bucks.
|
1:22 |
Is Matt Kemp the worst defensive CF in baseball today? |
1:23 |
: He’s not a CF any more thank god.
|
1:24 |
oh gawd, why in the world would the Mets trade any assets to the ChiSox Alexei when they can just sign Lowrie… and certainly the ChiSox would have no interest in Niese |
1:26 |
: Alexei Ramirez is a *way* better defender and his bat has been only been 4% worse than Lowrie’s. If they want a second baseman to play short, they have Flores.
|
1:26 |
Which team of this group is most likely to surprise: WSox, Marlins, Astros, Mets? |
1:26 |
: The White Sox. Smart FO with enough win-now pieces and an established need (pitching) that they can go impact with the right moves.
|
1:26 |
Possible that some guys age “faster” than others? In particular are guys who reach maturity younger (like Harper) likely to begin to deteriorate sooner as well? Like, could their bodies just be moving at a faster pace hormonally? |
1:27 |
: I have seen this quoted as evidence for Zimmernan’s recent finding that peak age is moving earlier. Debut age is also moving earlier.
|
1:27 |
where did u get Travis is “not a good prospect” from? most sources have him a top 100 prospect. |
1:28 |
: Keith Law called him a non prospect and most of twitter spent the night talking about how ‘best Tigers prospect’ is not really a moniker any prospect is reaching for.
|
1:29 |
Do you like Pomeranz at all? |
1:29 |
: He’s amazing. He only throws two pitches, a four-seamer with some rise and a great curve. Given platoon splits on pitches, that’s one of the few two-pitch mixes that might work, but it’s really iffy for a starter. Any other park in the AL and I’d stay away.
|
1:30 |
Steamer projects 3.3 WAR for each of the four following players for 2015: Hanley, R. Zimmerman, H. Kendrick, and Yelich. Which do you think will have the highest WAR of the bunch in ’15? |
1:30 |
: I love Christian Yelich. So much.
|
1:30 |
And you have to put that into context, adding alexi means dealing murphy (alderson has said as much), so assuming that you can have niese, flores and murphy or alexi and flores, where is the upgrade? |
1:32 |
: I don’t value Niese highly and think any combo of Montero and Syndergaard and Gee can make up for his production. I think Flores will expose himself as a really poor defender with more time. Murphy’s a one year asset that’s projected to be below average, which doesn’t seem crazy given his declining defense and BABIP-dependent offense. Flores/Herrrera at second seems like it can come up with 1.5 wins. I trust Ramirez more as a shortstop.
|
1:32 |
I blog on razzball and I think jaywrong beat you in the bold prediction contest. YOU owe HIM Beer! |
1:33 |
: Well I got five right and he said they were kosher to begin the season, so rules are rules. I think you could take one away from me and call it a tie, and I even offered that to him.
|
1:33 |
You see a kipnis rebound next season? |
1:34 |
: Yes. He may even be under-projected. Zimmerman found that players that play through injury get under-projected in the power department.
|
1:34 |
Some guy just yelled “Hey I see you” at me while I walked down the street absentmindedly looking at stuff — signs, phonebooths, car interiors. What’s the deal? |
1:34 |
Do us alp a favor and get Sullivan super trashed at the winter meetings. |
1:34 |
This chat needs a lude, dude. |
1:34 |
: Done and done.

Crazy idea that will never happen but is cool to think about anyway: instead of adding 2 expansion teams, MLB adds 12-16 in a second league and then begins promotion/relegation from AL/NL. A multi tier league would make everything way more interesting from top to bottom and allow MLB to add a lot of new teams. |
1:35 |
: I’ve been to a first-division playoff game with promotion on the line between Reading and West Ham and it was one of the loudest games I’ve been to in my life. I love it.
|
1:36 |
Your comment about Sauvin got me thinking… what’s the best Beercation you’ve taken? Somewhere in the Pacific NW? |
1:36 |
: So far have only really done this in San Diego and it’s been amazing every time.
|
1:36 |
BOOOO YOU LIKE A POPULAR SONG BOOOOOO |
1:36 |
For many years, the Braves seemed like a well-oiled machine. They are just confusing these days. Thoughts on the direction(s) they’re going right now? |
1:37 |
: If I were them I wouldn’t overreact too much to last year. Still have a lot of great players.
|
1:37 |
Mike Morse. A solid bargain at DH for someone? A nice alternative to country breakfast? |
1:37 |
: yes.
|
1:37 |
You believing these betts projections? .300 average, 15 homers, 40 steals, .825+ ops? that’s top 10 outfielder material! |
1:37 |
: I love him but you still have to admit that there are a lot of outfielders in Boston.
|
1:38 |
So did that guy finally turn into a werewolf for good? |
1:38 |
: He’s mashing the keyboard and howling right now.
|
1:38 |
Carlos Rodon or Correa in a keeper league with need for impact in the VERY near term? |
1:38 |
: Damn, Rodon will be up sooner but I still want Correa.
|
1:39 |
Ian Desmond 7 years/107 million? worth it? |
1:40 |
: I’d do it, even thought I don’t love his kind of skillset (iffy plate D for one). He’s been a four-win SS for a while now and is 29.
|
1:40 |
Is there concern about Sandoval’s free swinging approach as he ages? I heard about the weight, but I find the fact that he swings at everything would age poorly. Any evidence of this? |
1:40 |
: There is and it will be in my article. O-contact ages *very* poorly.

Would you do fister for Gomez + pollack in a keep forever points? |
1:42 |
: Yes.
|
1:42 |
How’s BA Old Raspy? Came and went through my go-to bottleshop yesterday; passed at $21/btl and now wondering if I should be full of regret. |
1:42 |
: It’s great but ti’s a small bottle so that’s a HEFTY price.
|
1:42 |
Is Scott van slyke actually the guy teams should be trading for? |
1:42 |
: That FO won’t trade him IMO.
|
1:43 |
Is it unfair that they stop serving alcohol in the 5th in the Yankees stadium bleachers but in the 7th everywhere else in the stadium? Seems especially nuts considering the bleacher fans are the likeliest to have taken the subway to the stadium rather than driving. I can see the argument that you want to avoid rowdy behavior but I wear an Orioles hat every time I sit there and have never had anyone mess with me. |
1:43 |
: Here’s a secret: in the super posh spots in many parks, they *don’t stop* serving alcohol.

You’re a GM and a genie comes to you. He offers you 1 of 2 choices.. 1) a 6 win player at market value 2)The best luck in the league. What are you taking? |
1:44 |
: best luck. Did the Royals even have a six-win player? Oh Gordon, which might have been based on defensive luck.
|
1:45 |
Is Brad Miller good enough to justify the Mets giving up significant assets rather than playing Wilmer Flores at SS. |
1:46 |
: This guy is super divisive. I think I’d like to pay less than ‘significant assets.’ As in, no Thor. Maybe Montero. Definitely Niese.
|
1:46 |
Are you buying Smyly all over the place in hopes he learns “The Thing” and becomes a monster. |
1:46 |
: He may not need to. FB/Cutter/Curve is still three pitches. But yeah if he learns Thing Three, wow.
|
1:47 |
BA called Travis more steady than special. I think “non-prospect” is a little strong. |
1:47 |
: I like the trade for Toronto.
|
1:47 |
If the white sox sign yasmani Tomas, their outfield could be Tomas, the tank (viciedo) engine (eaton). |
1:47 |
Lester or Scherzer? Who |
1:47 |
: Scherzer for me.
|
1:47 |
who’s your darkhorse SP for the year? |
1:48 |
: Stil working the list but Randall Delgado has a lot in common with Carrasco if he gets a job. Love Chase Anderson.
|
1:48 |
My daughter is a freshman at Stanford. Should she feel self-conscious that her father is not a celebrity? |
1:49 |
: I lived in Chelsea Clinton’s dorm and the RAs congratulated me on it when I moved in. I asked them if they congratulated her on living in my dorm. I bet your daughter will be fine.
|
1:49 |
4/69 mil for V-Mart. Seems like way too much for a 37-year old DH to me |
1:50 |
: I think so too.

Are you the main doctor for FG+? Any zingwhistles to expect or hope for? No one loves rain like the birds. |
1:50 |
: Some really fun research. Plus I might debut a pitch peripheral stat there.
|
1:50 |
Does Happ get traded or do the Jays wait until Norris wins the 5th spot? |
1:51 |
: Happ doesn’t figure in as much more than a depth piece.
|
1:51 |
Whoaaaaaaaaaaaaa DeGrom for one of those SS prospects? No WAY those teams would do that! |
1:51 |
: Samardzija had 1.5 years of control left and got traded for one of them.
|
1:52 |
Eno, help me out with a post? Anyone out there looking for a committed owner for their standard fantasy league? No auto fill weeks here. I know my stuff and love to wheel and deal. Hit me up at @davidspeidel2 on twitter. I prefer OBP leagues but can ride the BABIP luck train as well. |
1:53 |
Do the facts about the Tavares accident make you feel any different about it? |
1:53 |
: Yes. Super conflicted. I know he’s now the bad guy and he pretty much killed his girlfriend, but it’s still tragic and sad to me.
|
1:54 |
im chatting while running oyster clearance rate experiments and filtering chlorophyll. if that means anything to anyone here |
1:54 |
Thoughts about the time clock experiment they tried in the AFL? |
1:55 |
: I don’t like that one in that I don’t want a clock out on the field. but there’s is a time limit that the umps are supposed to enforce right now anyway. I don’t like the four-finger intentional walk either, but I think that’s more likely to happen.
|
1:55 |
relegation is the worst idea for baseball, unless you want to destroy the current minor league system and make talent so much shallower, leading to worse baseball. |
1:55 |
: No it doesn’t work for baseball. But it’s awesome in soccer.
|
1:56 |
could a souza get Odor? maybe throw in detwiler…would it be smart? |
1:56 |
: No I don’t see this happening.
|
1:56 |
Betts feels like this winter’s Danny Salazar. the Sabre community is going apespit over him. Let’s take step back and take a breath on this one… |
1:57 |
: I interviewed in at the 2013 AFL all-star game, picked him in the second round of the BP prospect draft that winter and have generally beat the drum for him so far based on BB>K and great power despite small stature at every level. I’m not the guy to whine to.
|
1:58 |
What are your thoughts on Daniel Norris? Is he going to get a legit shot in the rotation? In fangraphs pts league. |
1:58 |
: Yes I love him and I do think he has a great chance.
|
1:58 |
Do you ever say your name as a response? |
1:58 |
: In Japanese, E-no means ‘no, I’m fine, no thank you.”

why is nyc beer scene so brutal? handful of good bars on lower west side and in bk but even their selection isn’t hot… |
1:59 |
: Expensive rent?
|
1:59 |
Were you surprised the Jays didn’t qualfy Rasmus? Seemed like he wanted out anyway. |
1:59 |
: Yeah but he might take that deal.
|
2:00 |
Devon Travis fantasy relevance? Worth a last-round flier? |
2:00 |
: Wait for him to win the job, then yes.
|
2:00 |
Kluber winning Cy Young, progress, luck, wins, or something else? |
2:00 |
: Turfed the four-seamer and finally found a fastball he could command. Has a plus plus plus breaker and a good change. Good pitcher, probably not this good. The two-seamer still gets meh rates.
|
2:01 |
Jake daBomb really likes to pick fights with you. |
2:01 |

With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
Eno, why do you love Chase Anderson so much? Just wondering.
