2018 Prospects Week

We covered a bunch of prospects this week. While I can’t provide analysis in the same way Eric and Kiley have, I can summarize the prospects into a sortable table by team and grade.

You are able to toggle between the Top 100 group and then a second group that features the Top 100 plus the 115 additional prospects mentioned at the end of the Top 100 and 45/40 grade post. Have fun!

Finally got one on the 2017 graduated list though with Mitch Haniger, he’s pretty decent…

Haniger wasn’t even really a product of their minor league system. Wonder what Dipoto will do about it…

Yeah he absolutely wasn’t a product of their system in any way. Dipoto’s approach seems to be to trade all of the team’s top prospects (who were of questionable value) for guys closer to the Major League roster (who are of questionable value).

Haniger is pretty good but Walker and Marte might have been greater areas of need for the team and more valuable so it might be a wash in the best case scenario.

Well Dipoto has never really been good at drafting and developing talent. I mean with the Angels he got rid of good scouts that helped create a farm system that was among the best in the league. He also fired coaches that were instrumental in the development of players. Honestly Dipoto is a GM that I would bring in for 5 years (if my other GM wasn’t that good) after having built a decent farm system to maximize the window of competition. He reminds me of Dave Dombrowski, where if the team has a lot of money it can work, otherwise I wouldn’t keep him long term.

Most significant move by far has been giving away Gohara for basically nothing. M’s will regret not having a cost-controlled SP3 who throws 97mph from the left side.

2nd most significant move was trading Tyler O’Neill for an SP6/AAAA guy in Marco Gonzales. O’Neill’s not a sure thing, but I’d rather have his power upside.

Dipoto’s other 10,000 moves basically average out to nothing. He’s the latest in a line of horrific Seattle GMs.

Is this indicative of an ownership problem? I feel like every time they hire a GM they just pick the person who convinces them they can be a playoff team the soonest. Not the prospective GM who comes in and says we need to rebuild our farm system and put a premium on future success. We need someone to save us from this mediocrity of a roughly 500 team every year.

This is spot on. Gohara was essentially traded for Smyly (with Mallex Smith as a middle man). How could Dipoto prefer 1yr of Smyly over 6yrs of Gohara? You only do a deal like that if the 1yr guy is elite.

In the case of Marco Gonzales, it’s hard to understand why Dipoto wouldn’t just sign a cheap crappy FA SP instead of giving away a real prospect. Miguel Gonzales and Yovani Gallardo come to mind. Both will likely be just as effective as Marco Gonzales and they just signed for $2-4M.

It was two years of Smyly. They non-tendered him because he got hurt before throwing a single pitch for them. At the time, Gohara was considered the seventh or eighth best prospect in the system.

At the time, Gohara was considered 2nd or 3rd by most lists. The trade made some sense in the process: trade a teenager with high upside who is seemingly far away from the majors for a Proven Starter ™. However, because baseball, Smyly blew out his arm in the WBC and Gohara turned his bad makeup and poor command into one of the best pitching prospects on the planet. GOMS

To be fair, Dipoto looks like a genius compared to the last GM. But it is true, he has habit of collecting marginal pitchers, and sometimes trading good pieces to get them.

I think Dipoto is a bottom-third GM in the league right now, but that as much a statement about how many good GMs there are right now than Dipoto’s ability. You could do worse, but you could definitely do a lot better.

It isn’t a top 215. That group of “interesting” 45s and 40s is definitely not the guys in line after the top 137 50FV+ guys. There are likely 150-175 45FV guys alone, all of whom are higher ranked than the interesting 40s and I’d guess many of the unmentioned 45FVs would rank about some of the mentioned 45FVs.

It is kind of lame that the toggle doesn’t only include the extra 37 guys with 50FV+ because including random guys getting a write-up from the interesting 40/45 list is misleading.

The Mets have Szapucki and Molina who would have been easy top 100s without their injury setbacks, and Rosario and Smith who were just promoted.
