Jay Jaffe FanGraphs Chat – 4/29/22
2:01 |
: Good afternoon, folks! Welcome to what is going to be an abbreviated version of the usual festivities, as I have to be out the door at about 3:15 ET.

: The quick housekeeping: My week featured pieces on the Hall of Fame’s Era Committee shakeup |
2:03 |
: You buying Kyle Wright? Anyone planning on a Wright article? I’m curious if the changes he made are sustainable.
|
2:07 |
: I haven’t had a chance to lay eyes on Wright but I know people are talking about his hot start. He’s been lit up at the major league level before, but the Braves thought highly enough of him to make him a top-5 pick five years ago. We know pitching development is non-linear, so it shouldn’t be a shock when a guy takes a big leap forward, especially when it comes with a jump in velocity — often suggesting cleaner mechanics and possibly better command as well. I imagine we’ll have coverage of him soon enough, either from me or someone else

2:08 |
: Should Yankee fans stop whining about their team now? Or is there something else they should be angry about?
|
2:10 |
: They should be comforted by the strong start, but I think they have reason to be concerned about the team’s catching situation, the overreliance upon aging players, and the fact that they didn’t land one of the star shortstops who hit the market. As irate as they were in the spring? No, but I think ownership could be doing more to fortify this team (even given their huge payroll).

Dan Szymborski FanGraphs Chat – 4/28/22
12:01 |
: East Coasters that send 8AM meeting requests I hope they metaphorically get hit with terrible BABIP luck for the rest of their lives that is all
|
12:02 |
: Good afternoon to people with righteous time zones! Good morning to the rest of you.
|
12:03 |
: When is it time to start panicking with Nick Gonzales? The K-rate seems to be a real problem.
|
12:03 |
: Nick Martinez?
|
12:03 |
: Certainly more than three games. Especially because his plate discipline numbers suggest a lower walk rate.
|
12:03 |
: I’d actually be more worried that he’s not throwing as hard as he was overseas.

Jay Jaffe FanGraphs Chat – 4/22/22
2:00 |
: Good afternoon, folks, and welcome to my Friday chat — my first solo chat of the 2022 regular season!
|
2:01 | : First, some housekeeping: i’ve got a big piece today about this week’s rash of no-hit bids and their connection to the MLB-wide drop in offense. |
2:02 | : Second, the Hall of Fame dropped big news about another Era Committee reorganization right as I was filing that. |
2:03 |
: I will cover this early next week, but for the moment it’s worth sharing that I confirmed with the Hall that yes, the four candidates who aged off this year’s ballot — Bonds, Clemens, Schilling, and Sosa — will be eligible for the 2023 Contemporary Players ballot.

Dan Szymborski FanGraphs Chat – 4/14/22
12:01 |
: April.
|
12:01 |
: I know it’s still early, but are we starting to worry about Jared Kelenic again?
|
12:01 |
: April.
|
12:01 |
: Can you give the devil’s advocate explanation for a lineup where Niko Goodrum bats third and Kyle Tucker 6th?
|
12:01 |
: A good one?
|
12:01 |
: No

FanGraphs 2022 Opening Day Chat
2:10 |
: HAPPY OPENING DAY! And welcome to FanGraphs’ Opening Day chat
|
2:11 |
: Thrilled to be here, particularly in light of how bleak things looked regarding the start of the season just a few weeks ago. We’ve all made it through a very tough winter
|
2:12 |
earnest tweet alert: It pales in comparison to (gestures at everything) but the last two years have been a pretty stressful time to be in the baseball website biz, so as we celebrate another Opening Day, thanks for sticking with @fangraphs. It has made all the difference 🥰
|
2:12 |
: Just a note to say thanks for all the great content you all provide. Really kept up quality work even through a pandemic and then a lockout. You all are the best and I especially wanna say make Meg Rowley EIC For Life.
|
2:13 |
: Thank you for following along!
|
2:13 |
: 38 degrees, windy, and a rain/snow mix in Minneapolis today. Why did they schedule the game there instead of Seattle where there’s a roof?

Jay Jaffe FanGraphs Chat – 4/1/22
2:01 |
: Good afternoon, folks! Welcome to the April 1 edition of my chat. This April fool is still recovering from having accidentally sent my mom’s birthday gift to my Brooklyn apartment instead of her Salt Lake City residence.
|
2:01 | : In housekeeping news, my second entry in our Positional Power Rankings series went live this morning |
2:02 |
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2022-positional-power-rankings-first-base/. And before that I was visiting my folks and skiing (advance celebration for my mom’s 80th bday), which is why you haven’t seen much of me on the home page lately
: I also did first basemen |
2:03 |
: But… that’s about to change. I’ll cover the Pollock/Kimbrel trade for Monday — had to see it about 18 times before I was willing to concede it was real and not an April 1 conspiracy on the part of the industry’s newsbreakers.
|
2:04 | : In other news, happy Jon Spencer and the Hitmakers release day to those celebrating! |
2:04 |
: And now, on with the show…
