Jay Jaffe FanGraphs Chat – 9/24/21

https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/lamonte-wade-jr-has-been-a-difference-…). Earlier this week, I had pieces on Jon Lester’s hot streak (https://blogs.fangraphs.com/jon-lesters-well-timed-hot-streak/) and the Orioles’ impact on the AL Wild Card race (https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-playoff-race-thats-for-the-birds-the-o…)
: Good afternoon, folks, and welcome to another edition of my Friday chat! Today I’ve got a piece on LaMonte Wade Jr.s out-of-nowhere season and timely hitting for the Giants ( |

: Last week you said Harper and Tatis were the top two MVP candidates. Has my last week changed your mind?
|
2:04 |
: It’s been quite a week, and yes, you’re part of the discussion now. I’m actually scheduled to do a piece on the NL MVP race for Monday.
|
2:06 |
: I honestly don’t know how I feel about it now except to say that at first glance it looks like a real tossup between Harper/Tatis/Soto, none of them on teams that are going to make the playoffs. Beyond that, we’ll see what sways me.

: Your favorite FA pitcher this offseason?
|
2:09 |
: Probably Max Scherzer, because damn, he’s still one of the best in the game, a guy who appears as though he can be the top starter on a championship team right now. I’m of course interested to see how the Dodgers deal with Clayton Kershaw, and would think that the Mets are going to work hard to retain Marcus Stroman.

Jay Jaffe FanGraphs Chat – 9/17/21

https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-second-half-slides-that-have-crowd…, and earlier this week, I wrote about Team Entropy (https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/team-entropy-2021-lets-get-wild/), Max Scherzer (https://blogs.fangraphs.com/max-scherzer-chases-perfection-and-collect…), Ryan Braun’s retirement (https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/ryan-brauns-complicated-legacy/)
: Good afternoon, folks, and welcome to another edition of my Friday chat. I’ve got a piece today about notable second-half slides that have crowded the Wild Card race |
2:02 |
: And now, on with the show
|
2:02 |
: Do you think it’s true that Steve Cohen’s tweeting has hurt the Mets chances of hiring decent FO people?
|
2:04 |
: I don’t think it’s helped that cause, to say the least, but I think the bigger problem is that the organization just reeks of a dysfunctional culture, and the most prominent person in common to the Wilpon era and the Cohen one is Sandy Alderson, who’s apparently returning despite three notable hiring gaffes that blew up in the team’s face. I don’t see how you’re going to land an Epstein or a Beane if Alderson is still in place.
|
2:04 |
: I’ve heard a lot of people this season call Bryce Harper a future first ballot HoFer. I don’t necessarily disagree, but when I look at his comps on bbref, it’s a group of really good players, but only one HoFer in the group (Reggie Jackson. And Barry Bonds.) Are people jumping the gun, or has this season (which I assume isn’t used in those comps) pushed him over the edge?
|
2:06 | : I don’t think Harper has come close to guaranteeing first-ballot status but his early start put him on a Hall of Fame path, and the way he’s played over the past two seasons has helped get him back onto it after his progress was slowed. Wrote about him in this context here |
Dan Szymborski FanGraphs Chat – 9/16/21
12:03 |
: And happy Thursday!
|
12:03 |
: The last 9/16/21 of your lifetime.
|
12:04 |
: Dank Schwindel
|
12:04 |
: Dank Frank Schwindel or Dank Dizzy?
|
12:05 |
: I have been having an intense argument with my friend and need your take: is a taco a hotdog and therefore a sandwich?
|
12:06 |
: No

Jay Jaffe FanGraphs Chat – 9/10/21
2:03 | : Good afternoon folks, and welcome to another edition of my Friday chats. I’m just back from a bit more than 48 hours in Cooperstown for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony; I wrote about the Class of 2020’s long road there |
2:04 |
10 Hall of Famers died in 2020 and ’21. At Induction Day, the Hall of Fame paid tribute in a very well-done video mlb.com/video/remember…
Earlier today, as I went through the Hall’s Plaque Gallery, I snapped photos of their plaques to link to tributes I wrote @fangraphs. (1/11) |
2:05 |
So yesterday I blasted through the @baseballhall in an hour to visit a few favorite little spots and see a few new things. I snapped a bunch of photos along the way. Threading here. If you missed my tribute series to the 10 HOFers who passed in 2020-21, that’s here:

Dan Szymborski FanGraphs Chat – 9/9/21
12:01 |
: And the chat has started, at the promised time!
|
12:02 |
: I think it’s become pretty clear that Kyle Tucker is a top 30 player in baseball (5 OAA, 143 wRC+, .402 xwOBA, 1.5 BsR). When do you see him making the jump to top 20? End of 2022?
|
12:02 |
: Development isn’t always a neat little line!
|
12:02 |
: Though 2022 seems like a good bet.
|
12:02 |
: Hey Dan – CY candidate Robbie Ray’s success this season is due to his tight fitting uniform (obviously). Can the neural network explain how and why this works for Ray?
|
12:02 |
: Sure, let me run this while I answer a few more questions.
