Neil Weinberg FanGraphs Q&A – 11/12/14

2:33
Neil Weinberg: Hey all, queue is open and we’ll get going at 3pm! Priority to stat/data/FG questions, but anything is fair game. I’m @NeilWeinberg44 on Twitter if you’re looking for me. See you shortly.

3:01
Neil Weinberg: Alright, let’s consider important* topics (*-no guarantee of actual importance)

3:01
Comment From Pale Hose
Does Steamer project PAs? I know the projected PAs on the player pages on manually set by FG staff. Say Steamer projects a player for 200 PAs and FG manually adjusts to 400 PAs. Are the rates stats kept the same and counting stats double?

3:02
Neil Weinberg: Steamer projects PA, but FG also does custom playing time numbers. That said, Steamer is driving the rate stats 100%, so a .340 wOBA projection is a .340 wOBA projection whether we project 1 PA or 500 PA

Comment From Vslyke
How often do bugs like Nori Aoki’s -10 BsR pop up?

3:04
Neil Weinberg: I don’t know the official answer, but I seem to notice one or two mistakes a year…usually they are easy to correct, but sometimes not. I’m not sure exactly why we haven’t updated the database on that one, but he’s supposed to be a slightly above average runner this year

Dave Cameron FanGraphs Chat – 11/12/14

11:44
Dave Cameron: The offseason is in full swing, and we’re probably not that far away from the first few dominoes falling. We’ll spend an hour chatting about different moves, starting in about 15 minutes.

12:00
Comment From hscer
Thank you for preparing me for those Jordan Zimmermann trade rumors yesterday. I would guess we haven’t heard the last of those.

12:01
Dave Cameron: I don’t really see the Cubs as a good fit, but teams with middle infield depth (especially LH middle infielders) could be a good partner for the Nationals. The Nationals in an interesting spot where it actually might make sense for them to degrade their 2015 team on purpose.

12:02
Comment From Mike P.
Can Ervin Santana do better this time around?

12:02
Dave Cameron: Yeah, I think so. Last year, he got screwed by poor representation, and his silly $100 million ask scared off all the teams that would have given him $50 million. By the time his agent realized they’d screwed up, the money was spent elsewhere.

What is the best contract of the free agency era? The worst?

9:06
Jeff Sullivan: I have a responsibility to answer some of them

Jeff Sullivan: Hey Stuart

9:06
Comment From Xolo
What do you know about Kwang Hyun Kim? For $2M, doesn’t sound like the Padres are expecting much from him.

9:07
Jeff Sullivan: Here’s what I’d say: teams are more excited about international players than ever, given their overall success, so for a top bid to come in at $2 million, that tells you not a lot of teams believe in the player being worth much of anything

Kiley McDaniel Prospects Chat – 11/7/14

12:31
Kiley McDaniel: You know it’s me because I don’t have a snappy intro or a branded name for my chat. It is sponsored by Stamps.com, though.

12:31
Comment From Basebull
Too early to ask about a 1.1 in the June draft?

12:32
Kiley McDaniel: Definitely not too early for me to write about it over a month ago. I still have the top 10-15 picks in the same order but will post some updates on the lower end of the list soon: http://www.fangraphs.com/bl…

12:33
Comment From Bret
Hey Kiley – thanks for chatting! I read recently that the Jays are giving Dwight Smith Jr. some reps at second base. Think he could handle the position, and would his bat profile make him a legit prospect there?

12:34
Kiley McDaniel: Just saw him in the AFL but only saw him in the OF. He’s a good athlete that can run, so the tools are there too succeed but I haven’t seen/asked anyone about this. More important that Smith keeps making contact, but Pompey is ahead of him, so I can see the logic.

Comment From j
Saw on Twitter that your grade on Aaron Judge has gone progressively higher as the season has gone along. Possible 60 FV for you or not yet?

Neil Weinberg FanGraphs Q&A – 11/5/14

2:36
Neil Weinberg: Hey all. We’ll get started at 3pm. Remember, focus of this chat is stat/sabermetric/FG questions, but anything is fair game. Queue is open.

Also, if you need to reach me during the week for similar questions, I’m @NeilWeinberg44 on Twitter.

3:00
Comment From Pale Hose
Have you seen the fielding bible awards? Do you think that lineup plus an average pitching staff would be the best team in baseball 2015?

3:00
Neil Weinberg: /refreshes memory of winners

3:02
Neil Weinberg: Not a lock, but I think they would be close.

3:02
Neil Weinberg: That’s a good group.

Comment From Pale Hose
Hey Neil. How awkward do you think it is for Ned Colleti to go into work?

Dave Cameron FanGraphs Chat – 11/5/14

11:42
Dave Cameron: Welcome to the offseason. It’s our first chat since the World Series ended, and now the other 28 fan bases can join in on the fun again.

11:43
Dave Cameron: Let’s talk Hot Stove Baseball, starting in about 15 minutes. The queue is now open.

11:59
Dave Cameron: Alright, let’s do this thing.

11:59
Comment From John
The Braves are saying they’re not interested in trading BJ – do they truly believe he’s worth keeping or do you think they couldn’t find a taker?

11:59
Dave Cameron: Teams say all kinds of stuff. If someone would take that contract off their hands, of course they’d let him go.

12:00
Dave Cameron: No one will, though, so the question is how motivated they are to pay him to play for someone else, or take an equally bad contract back in return.

Jeff Sullivan FanGraphs Chat — 11/4/14

9:05
Jeff Sullivan: Time for baseball chat

9:05
Jeff Sullivan: Live on your internet

9:06
Jeff Sullivan: If you want to deceive yourself, this is technically a postseason baseball chat, or a preseason baseball chat

9:07
Comment From Bret
Hi Jeff – is there a reasonable value of X for the Jays that you think would balance this equation: JA Happ + X = Howie Kendrick?

9:08
Jeff Sullivan: Happ, rather obviously, is worth less than Kendrick; Happ, rather obviously, is also due less salary than Kendrick. Because Kendrick has just the one year left, he can’t pull back a whole lot in a deal, so in this particular proposal you’d be looking at something like a B prospect most likely

9:09
Jeff Sullivan: Now, I’m not sure whether the Angels would go for that — Kendrick will be in demand and they might be able to find a young big-leaguer with years of team control. But the Jays definitely have what would be necessary
