Dave Cameron FanGraphs Chat – 5/6/15

11:26
Dave Cameron: It’s Wednesday, so let’s do this.

12:02
Comment From Pale Hose
Is it possible speedy guys benefit more from soft contact vs. hard?

12:03
Dave Cameron: Yeah, one of the fun things about batted ball data is that you can actually see that production relative to how hard you hit the ball is almost like a U. There’s a big area in the middle where production is extremely low, because you hit it hard enough to go right at a defender, but if you hit it weaker than that, you might bloop one in or get an infield hit. Hitting the ball harder isn’t better at every velocity point.

12:04
Comment From Mike Honcho
How many NL players would you pick ahead of Matt Carpenter for the next 2-3 years?

12:04
Comment From Kevin A
Is Matt Carpenter literally the greatest baseball player in history?

12:04
Dave Cameron: Matt Carpenter, getting attention.

FanGraphs After Dark Chat – 5/5/15

3:35
Paul Swydan: Hi everybody! Jeff and I will be here to chat at 9 pm ET. Well, Jeff might be late, but usually he just *says* he’ll be late and then shows up on time. Under promise, over deliver, and all of that.

Anyhoo, get your questions in now, and we’ll chat like the bosses we all are.

9:01
Paul Swydan: OK, let’s do this. Jeff IS going to be late, so you’re stuck with me for awhile.

9:01
Comment From Job
Saw this on Twitter: If you think Lucroy is a 5ish win player for ’15/’16/’17 and Perez is a 3ish win guy for his contract, and the Royals are going all in for the next few years, would it make sense for KC to trade Perez + prospects or Lucroy or just Perez? Lucroy is a better hitting and isn’t credit for pitch framing, but the contract isn’t as nice as Perez.

9:02
Paul Swydan: I mean, it’s an interesting thing to ponder, but I don’t see the upgrade being enough for the Royals to sacrifice all the knowledge that Perez already has of their system and their pitchers, etc, etc. Don’t see that one happening.

9:02
Comment From Minty
No one knows what their respective teams will do, but when would you debut Correa and Seager?

9:02
Paul Swydan: Not before the Super 2 deadline passes in June.

Kiley McDaniel Prospects Chat – 5/5/15

12:04
Kiley McDaniel: I’m here. Let’s start.

12:05
Comment From Tim
How can the Braves get Josh Bell from the Pirates?

12:06
Kiley McDaniel: The Braves have 8 prospects that I deem to have the same or more trade value than Bell, so there’s 8 of the ways they could do it.

12:06
Comment From Jeff Gross
With Bryant/Russell graduated to the majors, where would the Cubs farm system rank now? Have the performance of enough guys like Vogelbach and Schwarber ticked up/maintained more grades overall than have disappointed (e.g., Johnson) to keep the Cubs in the top 5 overall?

12:07
Kiley McDaniel: More on this in the coming weeks

12:07
Comment From Peezus
How high are you on Tyler Glasnow and when do you see him coming up?

Jeff Sullivan FanGraphs Chat — 5/1/15

9:11
Jeff Sullivan: Well, we’ve done it again

9:12
Jeff Sullivan: We’ve successfully opened a live baseball chat, ten minutes after the scheduled beginning

9:12
Jeff Sullivan: One of these weeks, I’m going to be early. Stay on your toes!

9:13
Comment From Julio Pepper
When we say a hitter had a good game, what we really mean is that he got relatively lucky in his 5 or so plate appearances. Similarly, is a “good game” for a pitcher a real thing, or a result of stringing together lucky innings? It looks to me like there are days when pitchers have their stuff or don’t, and people talk this way, but has anybody looked into this?

9:14
Jeff Sullivan: The way I think of it, it’s easier to tell if a pitcher has a good game than a hitter. A pitcher goes out and throws 100 pitches or so against a bunch of different guys, while a hitter might see 15-20 pitches and he has no control over what they are or where they go

9:14
Jeff Sullivan: So while *all* single-game analyses are complicated, I think a single start is more revealing than a single game in the lineup. You can evaluate a pitcher just by seeing how he’s locating. What’s the batter equivalent?

11:30
Dave Cameron: It’s Wednesday, so let’s do some chatting.

11:30
Dave Cameron: I’ve opened up the queue a bit earlier than normal, but we’ll still start around noon.

12:01
Dave Cameron: Alright, off we go.

12:01
Comment From Brandon
So is Hutchison officially bad yet

12:01
Dave Cameron: No, but he should be a contender’s #4 or #5 starter, not their #2.

12:02
Dave Cameron: One minute break…

FanGraphs After Dark Chat – 4/28/15

5:49
Paul Swydan: Hi everybody! Jeff and I will be here at 9 pm ET to cram some baseball into your baseball holes! Fill up the queue and we’ll see you soon.

9:01
Paul Swydan: Hi everybody!

9:01
Comment From Pale Hose
Hey guys. I tried DFS for the first time yesterday. Safe to say I’m hooked. Any general advice for a beginner to that format?

9:02
Paul Swydan: I don’t play DFS, because it seems like the sort of time sink that I can’t manage at this stage of my life, but I remember when we did Pick Six that one year that you had to prepare for failure every day.

9:03
Comment From a eskpert
If you had a team of all immobile Sluggers (Manny Ramirez, Adam Dunn, Jim Thome, Good Ryan Howard) playing every position but pitcher, how many thousand runs would they score and allow against an average team (and Mark Beurhle’s pitching)?

9:03
Paul Swydan: Many thousands of runs. I can’t imagine them in the middle infield and in center.

Kiley McDaniel Prospects Chat – 4/28/15

12:06
Kiley McDaniel: I’m in Nashville right now, so let’s have a country music theme to this week’s chat. Just kidding, that would be terrible.

12:09
Comment From John
Come to Memphis sometime: far better food, music, and history than the overrated Nashville. I’ll even buy you some Memphis BBQ.

12:10
Kiley McDaniel: Almost went there during the opening series of the year to see Iowa (Bryant, Russell, Baez). Got ribs at Rendezvous last time I was there, when I saw Shelby Miller in AAA in 2012 for ESPN.

12:10
Comment From Pale Hose
In general, does org filler know it is org filler?

12:11
Kiley McDaniel: I know I don’t ask them that, but usually around their 3rd or 4th year they figure out who is getting the attention, who is on prospect lists, etc.

12:11
Comment From Guest
Does Bradley Zimmer have the tools to go 25/25 in the majors?

9:09
Jeff Sullivan: Welcome to hot sexy live baseball chat

9:09
Jeff Sullivan: I’ll be your host, and I live in a time zone that is ten minutes slower than whatever your time zone is

9:09
Comment From Guest
Good morning, Jeff, glad you could join us.

9:09
Jeff Sullivan: Me too!

9:10
Jeff Sullivan: I’ll start the chat with this: per usual, I encourage you to not bother asking fantasy questions. I don’t play so I can’t give good advice, and also most people don’t care to read about your fantasy teams
