Bryan De La Cruz Suffers From a Lack of Contact(s)

Proposition No. 1: Identifying the smartest front office in baseball would be a difficult task even if it weren’t such a loaded question to start. How do you weight scouting versus development? How do you factor the influence of ownership, for good or ill? Or injuries, or luck, or other elements of force majeure?

So I’ll state my premise this way: The Braves seem to be a competently run organization. They’ve made the playoffs seven years running — six of those by winning the NL East — and are set up well to continue contending in the future. They’ve had internal developmental successes, savvy trade wins, and the occasional opportunistic buy-low move for a veteran free agent. Are they the best-run team in the league? I don’t know, but I’d hear out an argument to that effect.

JAWS and the 2025 Hall of Fame Ballot: Félix Hernández

Before he’d ever thrown a major league pitch, cracked a prospect list, or reached legal adult status, Félix Hernández had a nickname: King Felix. Dubbed as such by U.S.S. Mariner blogger Jason Michael Barker Dave Cameron on July 17, 2003, when he was just a 17-year-old in the Low-A Northwest League, he was already overpowering much older hitters. Still a teen when he reached the majors, he quickly came to represent the hopes and dreams of a franchise that had fallen short of a World Series despite four playoffs appearances from 1995–2001; parted with superstars Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr., and Alex Rodriguez along the way; and capped that run with a record-setting 116 wins but a premature exit in the ALCS.

Though slow to embrace the royal moniker, Hernández grew into it. His dazzling combination of an electrifying, darting sinker, a knee-buckling curve, and a signature hard changeup propelled him to a Cy Young Award, two ERA titles, six All-Star appearances, and a perfect game. From 2009–14, he was the best pitcher in the American League by ERA, FIP, strikeouts, and WAR, parlaying that into a contract commensurate that made him the game’s highest-paid pitcher. Unfortunately, a heavy workload — more innings than any pitcher 23 or younger since Dwight Gooden two decades earlier — sapped the sizzle from his fastball, with injuries and a cavalier approach to conditioning taking their toll as well. The Mariners struggled to surround him with a quality roster, and changed managers and pitching coaches every couple of years. The team didn’t reach the playoffs once during Hernández’s career, finishing above .500 just five times, with a pair of second-place showings in the AL West as good as it got. It happened so quickly. Freshly anointed the game’s top prospect by Baseball America in the spring of 1996, the soon-to-be-19-year-old Andruw Jones was sent to play for the Durham Bulls, the Braves’ High-A affiliate. By mid-August, he blazed through the Carolina League, the Double-A Southern League, and the Triple-A International League, then debuted for the defending world champions. By October 20, with just 31 regular-season games under his belt, he was a household name, having become the youngest player ever to homer in a World Series game, breaking Mickey Mantle’s record — and doing so twice at Yankee Stadium to boot.

Jones was no flash in the pan. The Braves didn’t win the 1996 World Series, and he didn’t win the ’97 NL Rookie of the Year award, but along with Chipper Jones (no relation) and the big three of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz, he became a pillar of a franchise that won a remarkable 14 division titles from 1991 to 2005 (all but the 1994 strike season, with ’91–93 in the NL West and ’95–05 in the revamped NL East). Max Fried Makes Doubles Disappear

By the peripheral metrics, Max Fried is nothing special. Over the course of his career, his strikeout and walk rates sit somewhere around the league average. By results, however, he looks like a Hall of Famer; his 2.81 ERA since the start of 2020 ranks third among all starters. When teams contemplate whether to offer the left-hander a five- or six-year deal this winter, one question will be top of mind: Who is the real Max Fried?

Last week, Thomas Harrigan at MLB.com argued that Fried’s contact prevention resume might be the strongest of any contemporary pitcher. Harrigan noted that, after setting a cutoff, nobody has allowed a lower barrel rate this decade. That is reflected in Fried’s home run rate and therefore his FIP — other than Logan Webb, no starter allowed fewer home runs on a rate basis. Thanks to that super low home run rate, Fried posted a 3.11 FIP and 15.4 WAR over the decade — strong numbers, but reflective of a very good pitcher rather than one of the game’s elite.

One thing FIP ignores is the number of doubles a pitcher allows. Fried allowed just 16 doubles in 2024, tied for the lowest mark among all qualified pitchers. That low doubles rate is consistent with his performance over the years — during the 2020s, only 3.5% of the hitters Fried faced reached on doubles, ranking sixth-lowest among 173 pitchers in the sample:

JAWS and the 2025 Hall of Fame Ballot: Billy Wagner

Billy Wagner was the ultimate underdog. Undersized and from both a broken home and an impoverished rural background, he channeled his frustrations into throwing incredibly hard — with his left hand, despite being a natural righty, for he broke his right arm twice as a child. Scouts overlooked him because he wasn’t anywhere close to six feet tall, but they couldn’t disregard his dominance over collegiate hitters using a mid-90s fastball. The Astros made him a first-round pick, and once he was converted to a relief role, his velocity went even higher.

Thanks to outstanding lower-body strength, coordination, and extraordinary range of motion, the 5-foot-10 Wagner was able to reach 100 mph with consistency — 159 times in 2003, according to The Bill James Handbook. Using a hard slider learned from teammate Brad Lidge, he kept blowing the ball by hitters into his late 30s to such an extent that he owns the record for the highest strikeout rate of any pitcher with at least 900 innings. He was still dominant when he walked away from the game following the 2010 season, fresh off posting a career-best ERA. Read the rest of this entry »


2025 ZiPS Projections: Atlanta Braves

For the 21st consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction and MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Atlanta Braves.

Batters

This past year was a bit of a trainwreck for the Braves, but an unusual one, in that with so much going wrong, they still won 89 games and made the playoffs, if by the skin of their teeth. The lineup still looks fundamentally similar to the one that everyone liked going into the season, just one that’s a bit riskier with an extra year of age and an extended recent history of significant injuries. The depth chart graphic below is a bit too generous for my taste with some of the playing time for the injured players, with Austin Riley, Michael Harris II, and Ozzie Albies all with current projections above 650 plate appearances and Ronald Acuña Jr. just below 600. However, even with being a bit more conservative about health, Atlanta should have a lot of dangerous weapons. In other words, even if expectations should be tempered slightly, there’s nothing fundamentally broken about this offense.

ZiPS shares Steamer’s optimism when it comes to Harris. I was a bit surprised by the projection too – and surprised to see Steamer also very high on him – but it’s easy to forget that Harris only turns 24 in March, so there’s still a realistic possibility that he improves, perhaps significantly, and projections do have to account for that. Interestingly enough, both projection systems think there’s some power upside remaining from him, too.

Honestly, there’s not much in the way of actual surprises in the offensive projections. The only significant loss is Sean Murphy’s catching sidekick, Travis d’Arnaud, but this is one of the places where the Braves could afford to let someone walk. Drake Baldwin and Chadwick Tromp may sound like 80s movies antagonists who head up the rich kids’ summer camp across the lake, but they’re more than suitable caddies for Murphy. Baldwin in particular didn’t come out of nowhere, either; he was the no. 30 prospect in baseball in our updated 2024 prospect rankings.

Nacho Alvarez Jr. already projects as a viable replacement for Orlando Arcia when the time comes (probably after 2025), but the projections aren’t bullish on the farm once you get past Baldwin and Alvarez. Atlanta would be smart to be active in the non-roster invitee sweepstakes this winter.

Pitchers

Subtracting Max Fried is a pretty big deal, so adding a pitcher – perhaps Fried himself – should be the team’s top priority. Chris Sale returned to form in a big way in 2024, winning the NL Cy Young award and leading all pitchers with 6.4 WAR, but one can’t be too confident in his health; he turns 36 at the end of March, and the 177 2/3 innings he pitched this year were easily his most in a season since 2017. Reynaldo López as a full-time starter went better than anyone could have reasonably expected, but he’s probably going to give back some of that ERA in 2025. With Strider returning from internal brace surgery sometime early in 2025 and Schwellenbach getting a surprisingly spectacular projection, the Braves should be pleased that Spencers will make up two of the top four in their rotation. I’m just not excited, especially given the injury concerns in the rotation, about not having another option better than Griffin Canning or Ian Anderson for the last slot. From a prospect standpoint, ZiPS doesn’t see a whole lot of upside in the minors beyond AJ Smith-Shawver.

The problems that faced Atlanta elsewhere this season mostly spared the bullpen, which finished the season ranked third in WAR and second in FIP in the majors. It’s still a unit that’s in pretty good shape, with five of its six relievers used in the highest leverage situations already under contract for 2025. (A.J. Minter is the free agent.) But free agent departures have thinned out the bottom half of the ’pen considerably, and Joe Jiménez will miss most, if not all, of the 2025 season, so the Braves are probably going to have to do more than stand pat here. That said, because they’re looking for depth, they don’t necessarily have to fish in the deep end of the free agent pool.

So, where are the Braves now? They ought to enter the season with one of the best win projections in baseball, somewhere in the mid-90s. A healthy Strider and Acuña alone would have been more than enough to get the relatively disappointing 2024 squad to that level. This is a top franchise, but there’s a little more risk this time around.

Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR.

What Kind of Player Wants to Sign Before Thanksgiving?

The players at the top of the market usually determine the shape of free agency. A team in need of offensive help in the outfield isn’t going to drop $100 million on Anthony Santander until it knows Juan Soto is no longer available. And Santander probably wouldn’t sign anyway. His agent would want to try to squeeze an extra few million out of a team that, having missed on Soto, needed desperately to go home with something.

A year ago, Shohei Ohtani held up the free agency deluge, and everyone reacted like he’d gotten to the front of a long line at Starbucks and had no idea what he wanted to order. (I mocked the public opprobrium then, but having stumbled into that simile I get it now. Everyone hates the Starbucks lollygagger.) Then Scott Boras, who usually waits out the market anyway, took even longer than usual to find homes for his top three clients. So free agency didn’t get going in earnest until mid-December, and stretched into March.

You know who doesn’t? Alex Anthopoulos and Perry Minasian, who couldn’t wait 24 hours to execute the first trade of the offseason. And this wasn’t some bit of bookkeeping minutiae, a my-garbage-for-your-trash trade to clear a 40-man roster spot before the Rule 5 draft protection deadline. POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Minor League Technology Trainee will provide a service to an Atlanta Braves affiliate through charting live baseball games and providing video and information to Braves coaches, coordinators, and front office personnel. This role manages all aspects of the assigned affiliate’s video, technology, and advance scouting operation and aims to provide an experience that prepares the ideal candidate for a future role in the baseball industry.

RESPONSIBIITIES:

  • Capture video and collect data for each game of the full minor league schedule of an assigned affiliate (home games and team travel to road games, postseason included).
  • Manage a network of cameras set up to collect high-quality video from multiple angles.
  • Attach, edit, and upload video following each game daily.
  • Assist in the deployment and utilization of all Braves technology equipment at assigned affiliate.
  • Support the coaching staff/players with ad-hoc video/technology requests as assigned.
  • Participate in the affiliate’s advance scouting process and produce associated materials for the coaching staff.
  • Attend Spring Training in North Port, FL to undergo training on all video, technology, and advance applications.
  • Assist in other Braves Player Development initiatives as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior baseball experience (High School, College, or Professional preferred)
  • Advanced knowledge of baseball rules, scoring, and statistics
  • Possess an understanding of pitch types and have the ability to identify them in a fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional communication skills and computer knowledge
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Willing to relocate to a Braves minor league affiliate from April through Mid-September
  • The ability to safely lift and transport equipment weighing 25 lbs. or more
  • Capable of climbing ladders and successfully placing equipment from various positions and heights
  • Flexible schedule: ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Completed a bachelor’s degree
  • Able to successfully complete a background check

Description:
The Atlanta Braves are looking to fill the position of Baseball Systems Developer Associate. The Baseball Systems Developer Associate position emphasizes software and web development as it relates to the Baseball Operations department. The Developer’s main responsibilities will be to build and enhance proprietary applications for displaying baseball information and visualizations, maintaining existing information management systems, and developing additional productivity tools to aid in Baseball Operations decision making. Candidates must have experience with application and/or web development, with interest in baseball and sports analytics research as a strong plus. The position will report to Assistant General Manager, Research and Development. Note: Applicants for full-season associate and summer associate (May-August) will be considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing and maintaining proprietary software used within the Baseball Operations department.

  • Build relationships, communicate effectively, and gather feedback from Baseball Operations staff to build new platforms and improve existing systems.

Required Qualifications:

  • Past or expected BA or BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field of study or equivalent work experience.
  • Software development experience in one or more programming languages: Java, .NET, Python, JavaScript, C#, C/C++.

Associate, R&D Analyst

Location: Atlanta, GA

Description:
The R&D Analyst Associate position will assist Baseball Operations decision-making through the analysis and research of baseball information. The day-to-day responsibilities of this position will revolve around using data analysis to provide insight into player evaluation, performance projection, roster construction, and all other facets of baseball operations decision making, with an emphasis on different areas of baseball operations depending on the baseball calendar and needs of the department. Ideal candidates will have a strong, demonstrated ability to answer wide-ranging research questions using data-driven methods. The position will report to Assistant General Manager, Research and Development.

Note: Applicants for full-season associate and summer associate (May-August) will be considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform advanced statistical analysis on large datasets in order to assist in the decision making of the Baseball Operations department
  • Develop and maintain models, software, reports, or any other information system developed during research
  • Perform ad-hoc research projects as requested and present results in a concise manner

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong foundation in the application of statistical concepts to baseball data, including familiarity with current state of baseball research
  • Experience with (or clear ability to learn) SQL and relational databases
  • Experience with statistical modeling software (Python preferred)
  • Ability to communicate technical findings to individuals with baseball backgrounds
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends as dictated by the Major League season
  • Must complete a successful background check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated statistical research in the sports analytics field
  • Experience creating effective data visualizations is a plus
  • Web development experience, especially with JavaScript (Node.js, Vue.js), or Python (Flask)
  • Ability to and desire to learn other programming languages as needed
  • Familiarity with big data techniques
  • Exposure to cloud-based technology

Amateur Scouting Associate

Location: Atlanta, GA
Status: Part time

Description:
The Atlanta Braves are seeking a team-oriented and self-motivated individual to assist the front office and amateur scouting department in preparation for the Rule IV draft. This position will be remote and involve administrative tasks, research projects, and video/scouting assignments on a day-to-day basis.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Complete administrative tasks in a timely fashion with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Conduct research projects.
  • Attend local amateur games as needed in the draft spring.
  • Post-draft, travel to and attend summer showcase events to assist staff with scouting coverage, video collection, and charting duties.
     

Required Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated and creative individual that is also detail oriented.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with others.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends.
  • Must complete a successful background check.
  • Ability to relocate temporarily to Atlanta, GA.
  • Knowledge of current baseball statistics and analytics used in player evaluation a plus

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with SQL, R & Python and relational databases.
  • Exposure to an amateur scouting operation is a plus, but not required.
  • Background in photography/video is a plus, but not required.
  • Prior amateur or professional playing experience is a plus, but not required.
