2023 ZiPS Projections: Chicago Cubs
For the 18th consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction and MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Chicago Cubs.
Batters
When you look at Chicago’s offense, you see a lot of the parts of a 90-win team, but not all of the parts. It’s sort of like a birthday cake that’s been frosted, but lacks any decorations. It’s edible, but it isn’t really exciting quite yet. First base and third base are decidedly meh-minus positions, and I feel for poor Matt Mervis, since he keeps projecting for fewer plate appearances than a much worse-projected starter. (Incidentally, I’m only about 80% sure that Matt Mervis isn’t actually Matt Murton with a dye job and some cosmetic surgery trying to get some more service time in.) I’d still like to see the Cubs add at least one 1B/DH option before the season starts, someone like Michael Conforto. Unfortunately, the options there are dwindling.
Don’t get too alarmed by the Ian Desmond comp for Dansby Swanson. Individual comps are 99.9% fun and 0.1% meaningful compared to the large cohort of similar players, and in any case, Desmond aged even worse than the projections thought and Swanson gets a lot of his value from defense, which Desmond didn’t outside of the ability to stand at shortstop for awhile. I feel bad for Nick Madrigal, who had a second season ruined by an injury, this time to his groin, but a team trying to become more competitive can’t just hang around and wait to see if he can make his retro-1960s game actually work. I hope he eventually gets to a lousy team that has the flexibility to look at him. It’s hard to fault the Cubs for not giving him a lot of rope; he wasn’t a guy who came up through the organization and the player traded for him and Codi Heuer, Craig Kimbrel, isn’t someone the Cubs grumble about missing.
The funny thing about Cody Bellinger is that he’s probably a bit underrated overall right now. He had an abysmal 2021 and while one can hardly characterize his ’22 as a triumphant return to his prior glory, he was an acceptable starter in center field. Since he was a legitimate MVP-type just a few years ago, that’s always going to feel bad. Still, he’s 27, not 37, so the projection reflects that there’s at least some chance he has that upside still lurking in his bat somewhere.
Pitchers
ZiPS doesn’t see huge upside for literally anyone in the rotation, but it does see the top three of Marcus Stroman, Justin Steele, and Jameson Taillon as a very stable group. I’m certainly not putting the over/under for Taillon’s playing time anywhere near what’s on the depth chart, however. Sadly, ZiPS does not see Kyle Hendricks as more than a back-of-the-rotation innings-eater at this point in his career, but at least that’s the role he’s expected to fill now, rather than being the team’s de facto ace. Wade Miley is also a cut above the usual fourth/fifth starter [And is a free agent, duh. I had Drew Smyly on the brain. — DS], and ZiPS is a fan of some of the emergency options, like prospect Ben Brown (who I believe will end up in the ZiPS Top 100 prospects this year, though I’m not positive). ZiPS isn’t in on Hayden Wesneski yet, and I think I like him better than the projection does.
The bullpen looks to be a rather mediocre group, with few outright disasters in the projections, but also no real top-tier out-makers for high-leverage innings. Mark Leiter Jr. comes closest; if projected as a full-time reliever, he comes out forecast for a 3.07 ERA. ZiPS joins Steamer in its fascination with hard-throwing reliever Jeremiah Estrada.
In the AL East or NL West, this might be a team fighting for fourth place. But in the NL Central, the Cubs look a team that’s somewhere around .500, and the side of that record they finish on may come down to what happens on the injury front. The Cardinals and Brewers are still better, but it’s close enough that if the right cards flip over, the Cubs could make things interesting. Right now, I think they’re still one star away from forcing the division into a three-way dance.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2023 due to injury, and players who were released in 2022. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Norwegian Death Dixieland Bubblegum Ska-Funk band, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.22, above 2022’s level of offense but lower than other years. Pitchers who appear to have a fairly definite change in the majors from start-to-relief or vice-versa from these projections will receive reconfigured updates in the spring.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by flaws in the physical reality of the universe or by skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
That projection on Hoerner looks like it would play far better at shortstop than second base, but with Madrigal and Morel’s projections he doesn’t seem likely to move. I’d still consider dealing him for pitching and signing Segura or rolling with Morel or Madrigal anyway. Hoerner’s Aybar comp is quite apt since he is clearly in The Erick Aybar Zone, the kind of guy whose special talent is playing a very hard position well. He moves to second base and a lot of that is wasted.
Few things:
2B is still up the middle and playing defense there will carry plenty of Value post-shift
Hoerner during 2020 was a top of the league defensive player at 2B by OOA. Cubs won le division
Hoerner plays multiple positions well as a viable SS and 2B
Consider him more a 2020s Aybar
A few other thoughts:
The Cubs are good on outfielders, for now and forever. So is Happ part of the future, or not? He does have the advantage of actually being good now, so I think they give him a QO if he has a good year and don’t stress if he doesn’t sign it and leaves. But Benintendi just got an absurd deal, so he could have more trade value than expected.
I’ll take the under on Swanson and the over on Suzuki–I think they’re both 3.5 win players (incidentally, that’s what Steamer projects).
I think the Cubs need to give Matt Mervis a shot; Rivas had his chance and Mervis doesn’t have anything left to prove in the minors. Sure, maybe he’s a Quad-A type, but maybe he’s not?
Rafael Ortega having the same projection than Cody Bellinger in 100 fewer PAs is pretty hilarious. Ortega looks like a solid platoon 4th outfielder.
I still can’t believe they blew $18M AAV on a classic 2-win, 4th starter in Taillon. It’s a pretty optimistic projection for Stroman but assuming they do wind up keeping Hoerner it will be fun to watch him funnel ground balls to him and Swanson.
I would be pretty shocked if they traded Hoerner unless the season becomes a huge disaster and they literally trade anything with value.
Either ZiPS is wrong about Ortega and/or Bellinger or the Cubs made a mistake non-tendering Ortega (projected for <$2 million) and signing Bellinger for $17.5 million.
I commented the same thing. ZiPS is wrong on Ortega. As I posted elsewhere, not only did the Cubs non tender him, but 29 other teams are passing. Seems like a guy the A’s or Rays would be all over if he were a 1.5 WAR player. Likely to be below his 20th percentile.
It’s just really hard to project players who make dramatic leaps or drops based on data alone. It’s why the Hoerner/Swanson projections are pretty low/conservative as well.
“I’ll take the under on Swanson and the over on Suzuki–I think they’re both 3.5 win players (incidentally, that’s what Steamer projects).”
ZIPS projects Suzuki for 2.3 WAR in 466 PA. That’s about 3.2 WAR in a full season–pretty close.
Good call out. The nature of playing time in projections means if you take overs on WAR, you’re going to be right 80% of the time if the player is healthy.
Those 2023 projections are kinda ridiculous for Taillon lol. 3.8/3.9 Era last year and he gets moved to the worst division in mlb so they slap him with a 4.30 ?!?! Low to mid 3s more like it.
brad boxberger to brian boehringer is just incredible.
LOL Cubs
He’s not on your depth chart, but your comments refer to Wade Miley–I think he’s still a free agent. The Cubs did resign Drew Smiley.
Comps I like:
Dom DiMaggio for Rafael Ortega–that would be a 99th Percentile outcome.
Sammy Sosa for Chris Morel — yes please
Dan includes the projections for free agents before they’ve signed with the team they last played for. So he included Wade Miley’s projections in here.
“ Wade Miley is also a cut above the usual fourth/fifth starter [And is a free agent, duh. I had Drew Smyly on the brain. — DS], ” The comment was what I was referring to… lots of projections for players no longer with the team.
(Credit to DS for the edit!)
I also wonder what the best rhyming pitching rotation of contemporary pitchers would be?
I’d be happily surprised as a Cubs fan. The outfield and middle infield look rock solid and the pitching staff is more than passable. Anthony Rizzo would have been a nice fit here.
And Willson Contreras could have shored up that C/DH as well.
That Dansby projection: wow! If ZIPS is close to right about him, the Cubs got the best contract in the shortstop market. Younger than Bogaerts and Turner, signed for only seven years, similar AAV, and similar projection.
Actually, ZIPS thinks Turner’s quite a bit better. Still, 7 years, $175m vs. 11 years/$300m probably tilts this toward Swanson.
To the point mentioned above, I don’t think Belli’s 80% percentile outcome is high enough. I dunno what that would be from a distribution…maybe a gamma like distribution to have a fat right tail, but it would be far from normal with an outlier like him right now.
How do you program “back injury” into ZIPS?
You mentioned up top the strong bump Mark Leiter gets if projected as a pure reliever, do Alzolay and/or Keegan Thompson get similar love from ZiPS?
Yooo…I see you Caleb Kilian, Jordan Wicks, and Richard Gallardo
Just a heads up to all: Gallardo’s not going to do great in rankings but watch out for him. Among the handful youngest SPs to open in full season ball the past *two* seasons and led all 20 YOs or younger in IP this year (finished top 10 the year prior). Slow burn prospect who’s probably going to break out a little in 2023
I don’t know if it’s my color blindness or what but trying to read the names with those colors was enough to give me an aneurysm
Bright colored text + bright background = no bueno every time.
I am not colorblind and it’s miserable to try and read. I think whoever makes these needs to rethink the color schemes.
Interesting comps on Taillon, J Zimm definitely seems apt (edit: but not the one linked there lol)
Is it wrong that I check the graphic before going back to read the words?
I have the bias of a Cubs fan, but ZiPS seems way overoptimistic on Ortega, Simmons, and Reyes, three players who were released/non-tendered and are looking for an NRI to Spring Training. If Ortega was as good as Bellinger, wonder why the Cubs didn’t keep him as the CF for league minimum… and why no one is scooping him up as plan B to Bellinger? I like Ortega but he hasn’t been able to repeat what he showed in 2021 except for very brief flashes — terrible base runner and surprisingly poor fielder.
On the flip side, Hoerner has been playing at close to a 5 WAR level for a while and is an elite fielder especially at 2B, though health is a factor. I’d gladly take the over on his 80th percentile of 3.9 zWAR getting 4:1 ;).
When I saw how good the Rafael Ortega projection is, my opinion of ZiPS totally cratered
ZiPS thinks Ian Happ and Franmil Reyes will have about the same offensive value in 2023
Do you disagree? Franmil had a downturn, but I would still say he is a solid hitter. 27yo w a career 110 wrc. Last year was bad, but it feels more like a down year than a sign of things to come. It can’t help to get DFA’d, and adjust to a new league/system.
Interesting Chris Morel has Sammy Sosa as one of his comps. Both played CF for the Cubs as 23 year olds and had very similar seasons…but Morel’s age 23 season was better.
GET HIM ON THE JUICE RIGHT NOW! Mashin Morel instead of Slammin Sammy.
