2023 ZiPS Projections: San Diego Padres
For the 18th consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction and MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and today’s team is the San Diego Padres.
Batters
When you look at the Padres’ depth charts, there’s a kind of clarity when trying to decide what the team needs to do this winter. The strengths of the offense are obvious: Juan Soto, Manny Machado, and a healthy Fernando Tatis Jr. enter any season as top-notch MVP contenders. And unlike a certain seraphim-themed organization I won’t name with a few mega-stars at the top, there isn’t a huge drop-off to the next tier, whether it’s Jake Cronenworth, Ha-Seong Kim, or Trent Grisham after you’ve threatened him with torture if he tries to bunt for a hit at an awkward moment.
The team’s needs here are also quite obvious; I can’t imagine the Padres actually enter the season with Taylor Kohlwey and José Azocar splitting playing time in left field. The problem is, I also couldn’t imagine Nomar Mazara actually getting 41 starts in 2022, but that’s just what he did.
San Diego would also benefit from some figuring out what to do about Tatis’ position long-term. Right now, we have him splitting time in several places, but I think that the Padres are best served by figuring out whether Cronenworth or Kim are the answer at second, determine where they can put Tatis, and then find a full-time upgrade over Eguy Rosario or Brandon Dixon, whom I see more as complementary talent.
Another thing that is obvious here is that the Padres do need to spend some time this winter fattening up their organizational depth. The high minors are fairly empty at the moment — a combination of graduating talent, traded talent, and a bunch of minor league veterans now in free agency or in other organizations. Most of the players here who look like “break in case of fire” emergency options like C.J. Hinojosa or Domingo Leyba are no longer in the organization. This isn’t necessarily an expensive thing to do, either, and adding a left fielder and a couple of pitchers wouldn’t hinder this.
Pitchers
Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, and Blake Snell are an excellent triad, but the Padres, as of right now, do not have the organizational rotation depth behind them that they’ve had the last couple of years. I like the re-signing of Nick Martinez, but I doubt many would dispute my opinion that he’s hardly a sure thing. The Padres are going to have to fight it out in the division with the team that had the best record in baseball, so I don’t see this as a battle-ready starting five. The fact that Julio Teheran, signed to a minor league contract about a week ago, ranks this highly in our depth chart is what we would call an inauspicious sign.
I think the hole in left field needs to be fixed adequately, but even if the Padres don’t, they’ve got to score runs; adding another starting pitcher ought to be a team priority, too. You’d love to see them go after Carlos Rodón, but even if San Diego is getting to its preferred payroll limit and he’s out of its price range, José Quintana or a reunion with Corey Kluber would be productive on a team that will likely have pretty good infield defense.
ZiPS isn’t as high on the bullpen as Steamer is. Josh Hader and Robert Suarez, along with Luis García, project to have most of the value there, but there’s a significant step down after the front-end of the bullpen. Given expensive needs in the rotation and left field, I can’t imagine San Diego is extremely aggressive here, so I expect more Rays-style bargain-searching rather than the splashier type of moves made in recent years. Relievers such as (but not necessarily exactly) Trevor May or Tommy Kahnle are more likely pickups than any of the best few options available.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2023 due to injury, and players who were released in 2022. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Norwegian Death Dixieland Bubblegum Ska-Funk band, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.22, above 2022’s level of offense but lower than other years. Pitchers who appear to have a fairly definite change in the majors from start-to-relief or vice-versa from these projections will receive reconfigured updates in the spring.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by flaws in the physical reality of the universe or by skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
Thank you Dan, very cool!
ZiPs loooooovvessssss itself some Trent Grisham. Never mind that he sucked for 3 years in the minors and has been good for all of like 4 months in the majors lol
Tbf +!CF defense with power is an easy route to WAR and being a LHH opens up PAs…but yeah, I too am not as optimistic
Some people, when they see something that doesn’t match their previous belief, ask “what does it see that I don’t see”?
Other people think, “this doesn’t confirm my bias and so must be stupid.”
Congratulations on being one of those two archetypes.
I’d actually consider moving Tatis Jr. to second base, keep Kim at short, and then use Cronenworth as a super-sub at every infield spot. If they do that, then they need a DH and a left fielder, and probably one of them should be left-handed and the other right handed.
I think they’re probably done with Wil Myers, Luke Voit, and Josh Bell at this point, no? So Justin Turner, Mitch Haniger, Michael Conforto, and Michael Brantley should probably all be on their radar. Maybe Joey Gallo too (I kind of think it will be Gallo, just because Preller likes getting older Texas guys back). I’d leave Profar and Mancini unless they miss on their other targets–they just don’t hit enough to cover for the fact that they can’t play any defensive spot well. Belt, Pham, Robbie Grossman, and JD Martinez are probably done, but I think they’re probably about as reasonable a bet as Profar and Mancini.
For pitching, they’ve been rumored to be pretty heavy on Senga. I think he’d be a good fit for them; if they can’t get him, then they should probably shell out for Carlos Rodon. The difference between someone like Rodon and someone like Taijuan Walker is pretty massive; Rodon would give them a true playoff-worthy rotation in a way that other pitchers wouldn’t. But who knows what their budget is.
Rodon or Senga are the best answer but Bassitt isn’t a terrible fallback. Martinez as a starter would help a lot.
Gallo seems just as done as the others you mentioned
Is Profar really that much worse than Brantley or Conforto, or Haniger? They could take a look at Benintendi as well, but the OF FA market just doesn’t look great to me past Judge and Nimmo
Yeah, I think so. Brantley (who is probably just a DH at this point but can still hit well), Conforto, and Haniger have been hurt which is the main reason for pessimism. Profar is getting projected for 1.2 wins here over a full year’s work; my guess is that whatever ZiPs throws out there is going to top that in a lot fewer innings.
But I would tend to agree: There are almost no surefire starters in the outfield after those two, whether it’s because of health (Haniger, Conforto, Kiermaier), performance (Profar, Mancini, Gallo, Myers), or possibly both (Bellinger, Brian Anderson, Adam Duvall). Benintendi is probably the “best” option and the most likely guy to stick as a starting-caliber player because of all those things, but I wouldn’t pay him what he’s asking, not when he has basically no power.
Why not just push Tatis to OF?
Basically because I think moving him around a lot isn’t gonna work, and the Padres will need help in the infield relatively soon anyway. He’s got all the physical talent in the world but he makes a ton of throwing errors. Move him out of the infield and you’re probably foreclosing on him playing the infield in the future. And he’ll be around a lot longer than Kim and probably Machado (since he has an opt-out).
Furthermore, range in the infield is more valuable now without the shift. Keeping him at 2B at least gives him a shot of sticking somewhere out there in the future, and it preserves Kim at SS (which is pretty important for them defensively).
Also, I don’t think all of Kim, Machado, Cronenworth, Tatis Jr, and whoever plays first are all gonna be healthy at the same time anyway. If we buy that, then the question is who moves around.
holy s*** the tatis totals with that many PAs
Making Tatis a most of the time 1B and backup SS seems to solve the 1B problem. 1B means he get to be involved in many plays and mound conferences while saving his shoulder more than LF. I don’t know who Aderlin Rodriguez is but he seems like he could be useful at 1B/DH like Wil Myers was at a tiny fraction of the cost
Did Kluber used to be a Padre?
He was a prospect in the system traded for Ryan Ludwick iirc.
Wow that’s a throwback.
I’m being rather pessimistic on Soto but I think that a lot of his dip in performance last year was due to the weight of trade talks, the concept of turning down the extension, maybe even pressing in SD once he finally was out of WSH. I want him to exceed expectations more than anyone but I can’t help but feel like if those things last year bothered him, then they will continue to until he actually signs somewhere after 2024.
I think people are being wildly overoptimistic on Tatis Jr. — I think there’s a non-zero chance that he plays himself out of the major leagues this season. I could be wrong, but something tells me he’s going to be mirroring Cody Bellinger’s career trajectory.
Do you mean he “plays himself out of the major leagues this season” in the sense that he has a Bellinger-2021 type year, something that stains his performance record to the point where his failure as a player becomes a realistic possibility and you could squint and see him not finding a major-league opportunity in 2026?
Or do you mean “plays himself out of the major leagues this season” as in literally no team is willing to offer him league minimum in 2024 to see if they can capitalize on a rebound after a terrible season, more like [no remotely comparable situation found]?
If the latter, that’s very stupid. Sorry!
That would be a fun game- How bad does Tatis have to play in 2023 for SD to not have him on the team in 2024 (& the original poster said “Clay Bellinger”, so he must be thinking performance base ONLY)..Considering he’s owed over $300M, it would be something terrible.
Hit .125 with no power, no BB, K% of 45% with a fielding % below .900?
But it’s even more absurd than that, because even if San Diego releases him and eats every remaining dollar on his contract, the literal reading here suggests that the Tigers and Nationals wouldn’t take a flier on a spring-training invitation. So I think at that point you’d need to posit that he strikes out 500 times or something equally impossible.
I don’t think it’s possible. SD put up with Eric Hosmer for 4.5 seasons and he was an albatross at a position with minimal defensive value.
If Tatis were to crater, I mean REALLY crater, they might give him some AAA time to figure things out. But they only way he’s off the squad is if some other organization is willing to pay full price in a trade, or if he does something so horrifically awful off the field that they are willing to eat the contract to be rid of him.
I think it’s probably a 0% chance that he plays himself out of the major leagues this season, but if he hadn’t signed that extension there is a small possibility he could get himself non-tendered soon. A player having massive years in pre-arbitration, making a ton of money through arb, then getting wrecked by injuries is the Bellinger pathway.
For what it’s worth, I see no reason why Tatis Jr won’t keep hitting if he stays healthy. I just don’t know how likely that is anymore.
His top comp is Alex Rodriguez, the Twins catcher in the complex league (per the link). You may be on to something.
Those Soto 20th-percentile projections (.399 OBP, 140 OPS+) are disgusting. At least he’s no longer a National.
Fun fact, of the players projected so far in this team-by-team exercise, no other hitter gets an 80th-percentile projection of a .399 OBP; closest seems to be Xander Bogaerts at .391. Now the teams that have gone so far are not worldbeaters, but even so, I would put the over-under on the number of total non-Soto players projected at that level (>.398 OBP at their 80th percentile) as 2.
When Mel Ott is your age 24 comp, you’re pretty good!
I know he’s technically not a Padre anymore, but Josh Bell’s projection seems kind of low, no? I know these kinds of sluggers don’t always age well, but it’s not like he’s a whiff nightmare. Feel like he just makes too much contact to fade this quick.
I think a lot of the concerns about him are overblown. The projection systems don’t care about this, but I think a lot of people think the way he finished the year in San Diego makes him a bit risky to sign to a contract. For ZiPs, I don’t know what’s going on but I think the fact that he didn’t break out until he was 26 (along with his rather underwhelming set of comps–those seem questionable!) has something to do with it.
IMO, this is one time when I’m going with Steamer. I think we can expect versions of his overall line from 2021-2022 in the immediate future.
I’ll take the over on Bell as well. I have a gut that his underperformance with the Padres is more of a fluke than his All-Star season with the Pirates.
One more year ’til Machado 2024 in FA for Cubs
You’d love to see Morejon or Weathers step up on the pitching side for these guys. Morejon in particular has the tools to succeed averaging nearly 97 as a LHP
Is there no chance Soto is LF, Tatis is RF, Kim stays at SS and a utility IF (Adam Frazier reunion?) is the play?
I had never heard of Sid Gordon before, but if Machado’s last years in San Diego match up with Gordon’s it would actually be a good outcome for the Padres.
I don’t want the 6, 7, 8 and 9 hitters for the Padres to be automatic outs.
Now there is a set of comparisons with a player one does not see every day: 2 HOF players and … Mike Greenwell.
Greenwell was really damn good early in his career.
Through his age 24 season, in 331 MLB games, he hit .326/.403/.547 for an OPS+ of 155.
Wow. I think I grew up in his prime and I didn’t even realize that.
Agreed. It forced me to take a look back at Mike Greenwell. 7.8 fWAR in the season of age 24.
I remember more of the post-age-24 Mike Greenwell.
When I was a kid an adult stranger came up and joined us at the park to play baseball. Gave us tips, hit some balls, etc then disappeared forever…Few weeks later one of my friends says, never confirmed to be true, that guy was a MLer named Mike Greenwell
This is prbly 25 years ago in NJ and Wiki says he’s in Florida sooo….but that is how I recognized the name Mike Greenwell in your post…What tale, eh
Also had a substitute teacher who had been a player in the Cleveland org in 5th grade now that I’m remembering…Mr. O, can never remember the actual name
The Padres always seemed to favor playing Tatis in the outfield when he was coming out of rehab. They did it to protect his shoulder in 2021 (24 outfield starts), and they were playing him in the outfield in his 2022 rehab assignment, as well–to protect his shoulder. There may be an open question about whether outfield starts risk an injury less than Tatis playing at SS. Is running into a runner more likely than running into the wall? Regardless, the Padres always seem to answer that question by playing Tatis in the outfield when they’re worried about him injuring himself again, and I’d bet that’s their primary consideration this time, too. Don’t be surprised if he starts at DH and moves to the outfield. The risk of losing Tatis for the year has a bigger downside than playing him at SS has an upside.
