2024 ZiPS Projections: Detroit Tigers
For the 20th consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction and MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Detroit Tigers.
Batters
This is hardly an impressive set of offensive projections, but given that Detroit ranked 13th in the American League in runs scored in 2023, it would be odd to expect them to be that great at this point in the offseason. And in contrast to a team like the Royals, the Tigers have a lot of interesting players, most with actual upside. ZiPS likes Riley Greene, but that’s nothing new, as he’s long been the system’s favorite Tigers hitter. The computer is a believer in Spencer Torkelson’s second-half power being closer to his actual abilities. Tork was one of the biggest underperformers in the zStats that ZiPS uses as part of establishing a player’s baseline. Now, it’s not exactly projecting him to become Matt Olson or anything, but after 2022 and the early parts of 2023, this constitutes a pretty good comeback. Mark Canha is in his decline phase, but he’ll still at least get on base and is relatively flexible on the diamond, though he’s more of an emergency option at third base and in center field at this point.
Javier Báez is the only really depressing veteran hitter projection here. I can’t shake the feeling that he’s got one last season or so of relevance in there somewhere, but that could just be a relic of my memories from before pitchers figured out how to absolutely shut Báez down. ZiPS isn’t really all that keen on Matt Vierling, and third base might be a useful place for the Tigers to look at upgrading this offseason. A Jeimer Candelario reunion would be fun if he’s into it, though the team may simply utilize Colt Keith and Jace Jung at second and third, depending on how their fielding shakes out. ZiPS is very interested in Justyn-Henry Malloy as a hitter, but it absolutely detests his defense at third.
It makes me sad to say, but even with a very ordinary DH situation, the team picks up one or two wins a year just from not having to play Miguel Cabrera.
Detroit will still likely finish in the bottom half of the league in runs scored, but there are players worth watching here.
Pitchers
Tarik Skubal came back from flexor tendon surgery to be one of the best pitchers in baseball in the second half of the season, and I remain surprised how little he was talked about. He came back throwing harder and with better command than he’d previously had in the majors, making me wonder if they replaced a tendon with an industrial spring. Whatever the cause, ZiPS is into it, though it’s obviously hedging its bets about Skubal’s health. There aren’t any real standouts in the rotation, including recent signee Kenta Maeda, but ZiPS sees the Tigers with a lot of starters just below league average, and the vast majority of them are in their mid-20s or younger, so it’s likely a few of them will break out. The computer is especially interested in Sawyer Gipson-Long and Jackson Jobe.
If our depth charts are right about the pecking order in the bullpen, the Tigers are poised to get the most of their relief corps, and ZiPS especially likes Will Vest and Tyler Holton. The quality of the ‘pen drops off a bit as you get to the back of it, but that’s normal for a team that’s still rebuilding. One or two of the starters who don’t make the rotation might serve to fill that need.
Overall, the Tigers look like a roughly .500 team, but their talent is made up of younger players, so they have a decent win ceiling, though I don’t think there’s much chance they go the route of the 2023 Orioles in 2024. In the AL East, this forecast would mean fighting with the Red Sox, but in the AL Central, the Tigers are actually playoff relevant, though they’re certainly far from the favorite.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2024 due to injury, and players who were released in 2023. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Belgian Death Metal Skiffle Band that only plays songs by Franz Schubert, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.33.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by flaws in the physical reality of the universe or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
That’s a bunch of fun projections for the DET milb arms. Hurter/Madden/Flores/Montero/Jobe all look really exciting.
Detroit seems like the only AL Central franchise that has been willing to spend money; if they hover around .500 for long enough, it’d make sense for them to make some trades and try to open their window now. The Twins lost their best players, J-Ram is a year older and has little help, and KC and CHW might open as favorites for the top draft pick. If things break even 25%-50% as well for them as they did for BAL, they could really win the division.
I think this offseason they are probably still suffering the effects of the Baez / Rodriguez offseason (with Baez still hanging around, not really doing much). Next offseason I wouldn’t be surprised to see them making a play for Ha-Seong Kim though, since Baez at that point might be solidly in utility-infielder territory and they don’t have many plausible other shortstops in the organization.
Beyond that, I think they’re probably waiting to see which players establish themselves. They have an enormous number of players who debuted recently or who might debut soon where there are some questions about whether they’re part of the solution or not. Torkelson, McKinstry, Colt Keith, Parker Meadows, Jace Jung, Justyn-Henry Molloy, Jake Rogers, Reese Olson…maybe Madden and Flores as well. Probably best to find out more about which of these guys are good before you sign someone to block them.
(I think there are also questions about how good Greene and Carpenter will be but I think they are almost certainly part of the solution at some position).
Totally agree, though I’d rather be excited about the individual player pool generating this outcome rather than the rest of the division being flat out terrible. There’s so many offensive question marks still, I’m hesitant to sip anymore kool aid than I already am with these 8-3 DETROIT LIONS
I’m a little disappointed that Hao-Yu Lee who came over in the Lorenzen deal didn’t get a projection. Any chance he just fell thru the cracks and can be added in?
I’ll make sure and add him
I like Parker Meadows and Kerry Carpenter to beat these projections handily this season. I don’t have any great reason for Meadows besides just the eye test though. He just looks like a major leaguer out there. I am very interested to see whether they have Keith as a 2B or 3B next year. Whichever one he is going to play they really should add a bat at the other spot. Chapman, Candelario or Gleyber Torres would be good fits.
If Parker Meadows can be a serviceable platoon bat he’s going to be playing a lot and putting up a ton of value with his defense. And I think that is a very reasonable possibility.
Colt Keith at second base and Jace Jung at third base (or the other way around) sounds like a horrible infield defense. But maybe they score enough to make up for it. Or, I don’t know, maybe they sign a whole pitching staff of guys like Cristian Javier who are putting the ball in the air something like 70% of the time.
Jung is actually good at 2B from the reports I have seen. Doubt he can pull off 3B though. Colt being a lead glove is the real problem here
Luckily, Carpenter didn’t look out of place in RF last year.
Still not sold the long term plan won’t be Greene/Meadows/Carpenter in the OF in some combo & Keith at DH.
Any reason that Zips isn’t impressed with Jason Foley’s last two seasons to have such a mediocre projection this season?
love these….the huge issue myself and some friends have with zips projections on players is it values too much historical time wise. At least i think it does. It doesn’t recognize swing changes or pitching changes. If there is huge difference from yr to yr in player results then that player must’ve changed something.
For example…..if a player debuted as a rookie at the end of a season 3 years ago and he does poorly for those last couple of months. He accumulates 150 PA’s or so with an ops of .500. That offseason he makes swing changes comes back the following year and crushes it but gets injured. Say has changed his OPS from .500 his rookie year to over 800 the following year……but since his injury in the 2nd year he only has another 150 PAs. That’s 300 PAs total so far. 1 bad year with 1 great yr. Then the following 3rd year he plays the full year and does great again for back to back consecutive years. All in all the player only has 700 pa’s but his last 2 years he crushed it and averages OPS of .800 for those 2 years.
Well the way zips calculates projections, it will still include the terrible rookie .500 ops year over 3 years ago in due to the low number of PAs in total of the 3 years. It would project his upcoming year to be upper .600s ops even though his last 2 years he had an .800ops….simply due to minimal PA count so its including a terrible rookie year 3 years ago. These players that fit this mold always outperform projections by a long shot.
They’re easy to find if you know what to look for. My suggestion to improve Zips and what me and my colleagues do is to have a cutoff on how long time wise it looks back historically, not just hang the averages on PAs count. Can’t use data older than the last 2 seasons and I’d even weight the most recent season more like 60/40 vs the previous.
If you use less playing time than ZiPS currently does, the projections get worse, for players of every age. How ZiPS uses past history as part of its baseline estimation was the result of extensive testing and revision. And that includes testing accuracy with players by age or by the change in their performance.
If you have an actual subset of players with similar *definable* characteristics that ZiPS has a bias on, it’s definitely something I’d be interested in. Do you actually have such a thing or are you guessing with your eyes?
I appreciate the input, but there are huge leaps of logic here that aren’t backed up by data. Such as if there’s a huge difference “then that player must have changed something.”
Mad Libs with ZiPS! (ZiPS Libs? Mad ZiPS?)
Look we all know ZiPS always overrates players like __(player)__ and implicitly hates __(player)__ . It really overweights __(characteristic)__ but doesn’t pay nearly enough attention to __(characteristic)__. I propose replacing it with __(system)__.
Here’s what’s on my card:
Look we all know ZiPS always overrates players like Archi Cianfrocco and implicitly hates Alex Gonzalez (not that one, the other one). It really overweights stick-to-itiveness but doesn’t pay nearly enough attention to handsomeness. I propose replacing it with asking my aunt Sheila, she knows many things about many things.
Roster is improving but to become a serious contender they need more top talent. Dombrowski would use some of their prospect depth to get it. Maybe one more rebuilding year to see who advances and who doesn’t.
The Tigers don’t have the top prospect talent necessary to get top major league talent in return. Their major league roster also isn’t in a position that would justify a Dombrowski-esque all-in on the present. Detroit needs some of their young pitching to materialize and at least a couple of Greene/Tork/P. Meadows/Keith/Jung to make a sizeable leap before they should consider switching to “win now” mode.
The Tigers projections really hammer home just how mid the AL Central is. It’s not like the late 2000s and early 2010s when Cleveland, Detroit, and Minny were all competitive to some degree, and KC was building their World Series core. Minny is trying to overcome injuries and a lack of long-term outside acquisitions, my Guards are retooling, the White Sox are in no-man’s land largely because Jerry Reinsdorf is a terrible owner (he’s somehow just as bad with the Bulls in the NBA, which is more shocking if anything given how successful that franchise had been for two separate decades worth of dominance), the Royals are just existing and praying for another four Witt’s and Ragans’ to fall into their laps. Only the Tigers look ready to move forward at all imo.
Guru, why is Paredes such an issue for you? In the same number of actual PA, it projected 27 HR and 3.5 WAR for 2023, both the best of his career. What proposed “weighting” do you propose that would improve it and not make everything else worse?
You say you have datasets, but again, I’ll ask: what are the *definable* characteristics and how much do your projections improve? I know you’re trying to be helpful, but you’re talking about what is very low-hanging fruit that none of the projection systems have problems with.
And then I’ll ask, what *should* Paredes projection have been in 2023? And don’t say what it was, because then you’ll also have to justify why a 6.6 WAR season was just as likely going into 2023 as a 2.0 WAR season was.
And at the bottom of the entry, I linked the percentile results for ZIPS in 2023.
And again, here are how the ZiPS OPS+ percentiles did for players 26 and under:
Exceeded 95th percentile OPS+: 3.7%
90th percentile OPS+: 9.8%
80th percentile OPS+: 20.7%
70th percentile OPS+: 26.8%
60th percentile OPS+: 39.0%
50th percentile OPS+: 53.7%
40th percentile OPS+: 64.6%
30th percentile OPS+: 75.6%
20th percentile OPS+: 84.1%
10th percentile OPS+: 97.6%
5th percentile OPS+: 98.8%
Not as neat as for all players with small sample size, but ZiPS didn’t underperform with young players as a group.
When testing their exact OPS+ percentile results, the distribution was normal at 99% confidence interval.
Here’s that data. (Sorry, 25 and under, though same concept)
