2024 ZiPS Projections: Washington Nationals
For the 20th consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction and MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Washington Nationals.
Batters
Let’s get the bad news out of the way first. One isn’t the loneliest number on this depth chart, which features the most ones you’ll see outside of a singles mixer. CJ Abrams is the only player to get a two-win projection, and as for any threes, fours, or even something spicier (read: higher)? Well, they’re not invited to this party. We can also dispense with the other bit of bad news: ZiPS is actually more optimistic about a lot of these players than Steamer is.
I was thinking about just ending this writeup there, but that’s too cruel even for me. The good news is that even though the Nationals are unlikely to be very good in 2024, they’re not really supposed to be, and much of this roster is made up of players either still at the start of their career or who nobody in the organization expects to be playing an important role by the time the team is good again. Lane Thomas was a great story this year, as was Joey Meneses in 2022, but does anyone really expect either to be a big part of Washington’s 2027 World Series championship, should that come to pass? The Nats are using this time wisely, and it’s better to look at interesting minor league veterans than washed-up 35-year-olds for the spots you don’t have better prospects to fill.
Abrams is the most talented player with a starting job at present, and his interesting comps continue as you go down the list (Barry Larkin pops in at fifth, for example). James Wood doesn’t have a great projection yet, but the computer sees him with 40 career WAR remaining — the best on the Nats and enough that he’ll likely be in the top five, or at least close, when I run the ZiPS Top 100 prospects during Prospect Week in February. ZiPS also projects Ruiz’s OPS+ to bounce back to 108, a solid 11-point improvement on 2023; it’s only his defense that’s really holding back his projection. ZiPS still wants to see Jake Alu and Alex Call steal more playing time.
Carter Kieboom is tricky to evaluate given injuries, but it’s been a long time since 2019, and nothing he’s done while briefly healthy really screams “taking control of the third base job,” though it’s still possible. Unfortunately, Robert Hassell III’s outlook has dropped like a rock, and the computer isn’t even sure he’ll be a fringe major leaguer at this point.
Pitchers
ZiPS only sees a single sub-4.00 FIP on the roster, in the form of Hunter Harvey, and that should be concerning. Stephen Strasburg has all but retired, of course, so this projection is only here for the curious, in the way I always project retired players for one more go. Josiah Gray was an All-Star in 2023, but that was with his ERA outracing his peripherals and both sunk in the second half. In some ways, Gray took a step back from his 2022; his home run rate went down considerably, but one would have expected that to happen in any case. The bad part is that he was less effective at punching out batters in two-strike counts, and his low put-away rate suggests he’s still searching for a true out pitch. Failing that, he can still be a innings-eating mid-rotation starter, but the Nats were hoping for more than that when they picked him up from the Dodgers.
The Nats are paying Patrick Corbin $35 million for what I imagine will be his last season with the team, and the likelihood of any kind of comeback is very small by now. I’m more hopeful about MacKenzie Gore — and more than ZiPS is — as he cut his walk rate again, and a lot of the reasons he was so highly sought-after as a prospect are still present.
The bullpen is basically Harvey, Kyle Finnegan, and futilely praying for the game to end. Where most organizations have an interesting and/or unheralded Triple-A arm or two ZiPS becomes fixated on — or a half-dozen, if it’s the Rays or Dodgers — the computer’s just not seeing much here. Víctor Arano, who had a nice 2017 for the Phillies and a FIP below four for the Nats in 2022, is out with shoulder problems and has already elected to become a free agent. Perhaps when Cade Cavalli returns, the Nats will ease him back in with some relief innings and it’ll turn out to be something he excels at.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2024 due to injury, and players who were released in 2023. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Belgian Death Metal Skiffle Band that only plays songs by Franz Schubert, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.33.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by flaws in the physical reality of the universe or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
So the team’s best player is probably a low-OBP, bad-defense, 40-grade power guy?
Although I think I like Mackenzie Gore more than that. Or at least Gore has a wider range of outcome.
This team is playing for 2025. It’s possible that Wood, Crews, and House are up and good by some point in 2024, but I don’t see how it comes together before 2025. If a team comes in with a good offer for Hunter Harvey, I think he’s gone. And Kyle Finnegan, but unless he picks up a new pitch or something I think that’s less likely.
Maybe they see if they get someone like Flaherty or Mahle on a two-year deal with a team option or something.
Abrams definitely has his limitations, and yet this comps are Jimmy Rollins and Paul Molitor! That’s pretty good company.
Zips doesn’t take into consideration a team’s player development ability, but underestimating Gore (and Gray and Rutledge, for that matter) is probably a safe bet. The Nats have been unable to develop pitching for the entirety of Rizzo’s tenure (nearly a decade and a half!). They’ve had some draft successes, like Robbie Ray, Giolito, Luzardo and Pivetta, but all these guys were developed elsewhere. It’s the greatest pitching prospect ever, Stephen Strasburg, and that’s about it. In fact, I think ’18 draftee, Jake Irvin, was the first pitcher drafted by the Nats to contribute positive WAR since Strasburg way back in 2009!
Zoilo Versalles was the 1965 AL MVP, so that’s not bad company either. Abrams Top 3 Comps are 2 MVP’s and a Hall of Famer.
I’m typing this from the future and Abrams did better than 2.4 fWAR in 2024.
I think CJ is a potential 4 war guy, he can get to 110 wRc+ with his speed which is very valuable
I think the Nats are the, or at least one of the “anything goes” team(s) of next year. Like, it’s easy to see them as bad, but they also have so much young talent that you could see the slim possibility of them having some kind of team-wide breakout like the 23 Reds. They had a weirdly good August, even if they went .300 in September.
Actually, you know what, I’m gonna guess the 2024 Nationals will be like the 2023 Pirates or the 2021 Royals; that one random team that comes out the gate as the best team in April even though no one knows why, and then they fall off in May and never recover, then at the end of the year everyone goes “hey remember that one time this bad team was actually really good for a moment? That was weird.”
My eyes! The goggles do nothing!
Gore might still be good, he fluctuated throughout the year frustratingly, but as a whole looks to be rounding up fine. Not the ace expected (the Ks still pretty high, trended down in second half as he presumably tired out, though the walks were in order besides July) but a useful player. We’ll see what happens
James Wood’s comps are a little scary. Gary Matthews was a very good player, but, then the next 2 comp’s did nothing at the MLB level.
Abrams comped to Jimmy Rollins & Paul Molitor is interesting. Even Zoilo Versailes won an MVP! Zips must be seeing potential growth that’s not apparent in the #’s.
Check his second half numbers. They were certainly there
Wow, Dylan Crews already looks like a disaster when measured by Zips. His line stats were meh at AA (SSS), but his EV was very good. He doesn’t even merit a mention in the summary.
He has so little professional service that ZiPS doesn’t quite know what to think.
OK, fellow hardcore Nats nerds, who else felt a twinge when they looked at the comps and saw Steve McCatty?
McCatty! He did such a great job with those early 2010s rotations.
When he’d come out for a mound visit, we referred to those trips as a “McChatty.”
Hardly a given but I think Rainey may be useful. He threw 96 his whopping one IP at the end of the season and no reports that anything broke after.
I agree about Gray but Gore seemed at least as bad at putting hitters away, or at least without first having five more pitches fouled off and running his count up. That was just from watching though, I haven’t looked to see if there is some way to see what happens once a pitcher gets to two strikes. But I’d like to see even someone with lots of K’s be able to get them without getting so many fouled off first. He also seemed to battle emotions when something happened, and maybe with time he redirects that in a more positive direction.
I don’t think anyone is going to say that Keibert is great behind the dish, but I also don’t think you have to run Mahalonobis distance to see that really new FRM stat result as such an outlier from anyone else that the extent to which it hammers him might be a bit far. And for DRS, no one was going to have good caught stealing numbers with that staff.
Man, they traded away a lot of stars and that yielded a mediocre SS and a #3/4 starter?!?!?
Keibert isn’t who they thought they were getting. Hassell with a well below ave wRC+ combined with a k rate @ 32% in AA.
Not exactly the return on investment they were envisioning. Talk about derailing a rebuild. Not to mention Crews being selected over Langford.
But hey, it’s early and these guys can turn it around. No reason to rush judgement.
This would have been easier to understand if the first paragraph had simply added “so far” to its dismissive assessment rather than waiting another couple of paragraphs for the caveat.
And remember that if they hadn’t made all those trades they would be in a much worse situation. Nobody with any sense thought that Ruiz and Gray would turn into Max & Trea. But it was the years of control that made it worthwhile. To get several seasons of even marginally useful production long after both players moved onto free agency (Max in 2021, Trea in 2022) is a solid return.
All the guys they traded away were about to get much more expensive. Keeping them around would have put you in a 2023 Angels or 2017 Marlins predicament.
This was worse than I expected. I’m sad.
I’m not understanding ZIPS’ obsession with Jake Alu. He got an oddly strong projection last year. He went on to follow that up with a fairly bad season in AAA as a 26 year old and played horribly at the MLB level. I will firmly take the under on that one.
Some defensive metrics (DRS) rated him as one of the best defenders in the minor leagues. It’s why, despite projected to have a mediocre 95 OPS+, he’s rated as a 2ish WAR player. His defensive rating is +7, which is the 2nd best among all Nats players.
With that said, Alu got those ratings playing at 3B. And for whatever reason, the Nats insisted upon playing Carter Kieboom, a noted horrible defensive 3B, and Ildemaro Vargas, a prototypical AAAA/utility guy, ahead of him there. Alu played almost exclusively in LF, a position he’d never played before this season, and 2B, where his defensive stats weren’t anything special.
If they’re going to insist upon giving Kieboom another shot, I hope it will be as a 1B/DH, and Alu can get the lion’s share of reps at 3B. I could see a scenario where Alu becomes a poor man’s version of Ke’Bryan Hayes.
Consider me the choir
Although Vargas defends above average at 3rd and can hit lefties fine.
Wow, I thought I was high on CJ Abrams but then he pulls a Jimmy Rollins and Paul Molitor comp.
My fearless fantasy prediction: Abrams makes everyone who bets on upside and drafts Elly over him in 2024 look extremely silly
the weirdest comps for me were for Joan Adon. Edwin Jackson, Joe Kelly, and Garrett Richards had decent careers and were at times good. I’ve not seen that out of Adon yet.
Adon’s numbers look better under the hood than on the surface. If he didn’t locate his curveball so poorly that it gets constantly annihilated, he’d be a lot better. He should stick to 4-seam, sinker, slider, and emphasize his changeup. Might be a solid #4 that way.
To be fair, he has never pitched to a catcher that can frame well and calls a great game. That would really help him.
If this page kept a counter for every time someone visited it this offseason, I’m sure I would win.
not so sure. 🙂
Gore had a bit of a disappointing year on the face of it, though I think the blister issues were a big factor in a couple of his blowup starts and overall stats and played a part in command issues. I’m expecting this team to get a mid to low tier infield bat, perhaps even going as far as a 3-4 year deal. It doesn’t seem like they will adequately fill all four infield spots internally going forward in any case. If your the Nats I think you stick with last years rotation and see what Gray, Irvin, and Cavalli can do and hope Corbin can give you 170+ innings again as the 5 starter.
One ZiPS projection I’m skeptical about is Robert “Hunter/Jerry” Garcia. FWIW, Steamer is more optimistic. His ERA / FIP / xFIP were all in line with mid-3s performance last year, and his HR/FB looked right around league average. Slightly above average K rate (~0.5/9), just 0.08/9 higher than average BB rate slightly above average GB%, 4 MPH below average EV. low barrel rate in 2023. I get regressing, but that seems closer to the 4.29 steamer ERA than the worse than average number Steamer generated. I suppose the innings (32) are few enough not to impact the projection much, and relievers are volatile, but worse than average seems pessimistic. I’m thinking he’s a reliable 3rd or 4th arm in the bullpen behind Harvey, Finnegan, and maybe Rainey.
yuck. on nats twitter i saw a popular poster advocating for an abrams extension. no thanks
Why does “Jose Sanchez” whose career seems to be 22 PAs in the DSL as a 17 year old (with a 18 wRC+ and 59% K%) have a ZiPs projection of .261/.311.303 (79 OPS+)? Did the computer pull the ‘wrong’ Jose Sanchez for the translations?
