2024 ZiPS Projections: Toronto Blue Jays
For the 20th consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction and MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Toronto Blue Jays.
Batters
None of the projections here will blow your socks off, but on the plus side, very few of them will get your socks wet (and then you’re walking around all day with your feet wet and clammy, and every time you step it makes a little squishing sound, and you think there’s a bit of dirt in there and you’d like to take off your shoes, but that’s why you’re not allowed in Kroger anymore, so you can’t). If social media is any indication, Matt Chapman might be underrated at this point. He was terrible in the second half, but I haven’t found that to be very predictive, and overall, he still gave the Blue Jays about four wins that they now have to replace. Right now, third base, along with left field and designated hitter, looks to be an amalgamation of role players, though I don’t expect that situation to persist through Opening Day, if for no other reason than active rosters aren’t large enough for Toronto to start the season with all three of those unwieldy chimeras.
Bo Bichette is terrific and the Jays ought to extend him soon, lest he take $300 million to go somewhere else in a few years. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is still a bit of an enigma. Indeed, he has turned out to be one of the harder players to project, which I wouldn’t have expected when he was a prospect. His upside is still there, but you can’t get around the fact that he’s had one awesome season, one solid season, and a whole lot of meh. ZiPS still thinks he’ll be solid, but practically nothing between a one- and six-win season would surprise me at this point. The power numbers do suggest he should have hit for more thump in 2023 than he actually did.
Daulton Varsho’s fine, though probably not good enough to silence the second-guessing about the Gabriel Moreno trade. George Springer showed some significant signs of decline in 2023, a trend that is likely to continue as he turned 34 late in the season. ZiPS is optimistic about Davis Schneider being fine at second base, though the computer isn’t exactly banking on another 1.000 OPS (and neither should you).
Pitchers
With a couple obvious places to improve the offense, I would not be surprised to see the Blue Jays take a low-key approach when it comes to the rotation, or even stand pat. Hyun Jin Ryu is a free agent, but the Jays only had him for part of the season anyway, and the four healthy returning starters — Chris Bassitt, Kevin Gausman, José Berríos, and Yusei Kikuchi — all have rather unsurprising projections. They could still trade him this offseason, but it’s probably too early to write off Alek Manoah. 2023 was an unforgettable season for the right-hander, in the sense that it would haunt your dreams no matter what ancient curse or potion you conjured to try to forget it, but the fact remains that he was really good in 2022, even when you adjust for some of the smoke and mirrors around his 2.24 ERA that year. Dependable pitchers are always hard to find and expensive to keep, and pretty much any pitcher who is only a year removed from relevance should have a lot of team interest as long as their arm is physically attached.
Outside of Jordan Romano, I’m not sure I’d call much of the bullpen exciting, but it is relatively deep — ZiPS goes seven or eight relievers until it gets to the below-average guys. Jays relievers were ninth in WAR in 2023 and sixth in FIP, but you rarely saw anyone talk about the solidity of the unit. Now, I suppose some of that is to be expected — from my unscientific survey, about 95% of fans think the primary reason their favorite team isn’t performing better is because the bullpen is the worst one ever put together. But in any case, Toronto’s is a rather stable group that doesn’t need a whole lot of tinkering this winter. Save that cash for Shohei Ohtani! Oh, wait, I’m an Orioles fan, so I’d prefer if the Jays did not do that. If you’re looking for a ZiPS Special in the reliever category, Connor Cooke, a fastball-slider reliever with a changeup-in-progress who struggled a bit in his brief Triple-A run but dominated in Double-A, may be the pick for you.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2024 due to injury, and players who were released in 2023. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Belgian Death Metal Skiffle Band that only plays songs by Franz Schubert, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.33.
Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR.
As always, incorrect projections are either caused by flaws in the physical reality of the universe or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter.
Dan Szymborski is a senior writer for FanGraphs and the developer of the ZiPS projection system. He was a writer for ESPN.com from 2010-2018, a regular guest on a number of radio shows and podcasts, and a voting BBWAA member. He also maintains a terrible Twitter account at @DSzymborski.
Jordan Hicks and Todd Jones are quite the opposites
Sadly, no velocity data prior to 2002.
Those Tiedemann comps gave me a roller coaster of emotions
Seeing the Jays methodically build a strong lineup and pitching staff has made me very jealous as a Red Sox fan. They really don’t seem to miss often.
Those comps for Vlad–oof. He really is an enigma. I guess it’s a good time remind myself that a) he’s only going to be 25 next year and b) Wally Joyner had a better career than I remembered (32.9 fWAR from age 25 on!).
It not like the other two are terrible comps for the bat, at least. Butler was a solid hitter, just couldn’t figure out how to use a glove. Swear he had it on backwards half the time. And Sweeney was worth about 15 WAR, almost solely from hitting, from ages 25-28. Back and lower body problems ruined him, not a lack of talent.
The frightening thing about the Butler comp is much more the similarity in body type and early decline.
I dont expect NeoVladdy to be totally out of MLB at age 31 like Butler was but its not a great omen.
& apparently, he should be on the Royals, too…at least according to his comps.
& you’re right, Wally Joyner was pretty good..& Sweeney & Billy Butler both were really good hitters until they declined at a young age.
It gave me a good reality check…..for all the hype, he comps best with some very good but not superlative performers. Hopefully I remember this at draft time!
Just a year ago Eddie Murray and Albert Pujols were 2 of Vlad’s top 3 comps. Now we’re looking at Billy Butler comps. Oof.
Same with Matt Chapman – went from Mike Schmidt & Darrell Evans to Rickie Weeks & Brad Miller.
Hello, Country Breakfast!
This team could really use another infielder and another elite pitcher. But then again, who doesn’t?
I suspect that if they win the Ohtani sweepstakes they are probably done. And if they don’t I think they go hard after Chapman and maybe also one of the top pitchers. They are in a spot where extra wins really matter and there are a couple of obvious places to improve.
Think they need another bat in LF more than another pitcher. As well as 3B and DH.
Pitching is not a real need for them beyond a 5th starter or depth.
If they want to spend a full roster spot on a DH, they can easily do it. If Ohtani doesn’t sign, then it wouldn’t be hard to get Soler / Hoskins / Garver / Martinez. Or to bring back Gurriel or Teoscar. Or get Belt or Pederson into a platoon situation.
As far as pitching, I think you are wrong. The top end of the rotation relies a lot on Berrios being fixed. Color me skeptical. Kikuchi is more or less a 5th starter at this point, and there are a lot of questions about Manoah. I think the real reason they’re not going to go after Jordan Montgomery or Sonny Gray or Blake Snell is because they’ve sunk so much money into Berrios (and Kikuchi, and Bassitt, and Gausman). Much easier to rationalize it to yourself when you’ve already done a lot of work on something, even if it didn’t work.
The offence is a bit of a disaster. It sounds great in theory, but they weren’t good last year, and they lost Belt who is one of their better bats. They need to spend the $$ on offence. If they have a limited budget of $40-50 M, it’ll be hard to upgrade both the rotation and the lineup.
They need to get a good 3B, as I’d prefer Biggio not start. They need a LF (Hernandez is fine). I don’t think they can afford a rotating group at DH. Springer I don’t have much faith in, Varsho can’t be in the top half of the lineup, Schneider should be solid but probably not an impact hitter like last year. Bichette is really the only reliable bat there depending on what happens with Vlad and how he performs. There are some serious concerns with the lineup.
I get that Berrios isn’t an ideal 2, but if you upgrade the rotation your issue is then who is going to score runs for them? Going to be tough to do both. At least the BP is relatively deep with Romano/Green/Swanson/Mayza and some of the other options as well. If a starter goes short at least they have some depth there to let them take over.
I think the money has to be spent on the offence. I get your concerns about the SP, but the lineup has the potential to screw up their season even more if they don’t add the right players. They desperately need some reliable power.
I would take the over on Espinal. His lower numbers were probably more due to injury than any regression. He never looked healthy to me. At the very least, I expect his fielding to rebound closer to what it was in 2022.
Any system that ranks Bo Bichette as a 3.8 and Vlad Jr. as a 2.8 is seriously flawed.
Guess what they did last year…
Yeah, Vlad’s a 10 but can’t hit, field or run.
Yea and Bo Bichette swing isn’t very smoothe and his batting eye needs major improvement. Vlad is in the top class of hitters. Another words, Vlads batting is so good compared to Bichette the running and fielding shouldn’t rank Bichette higher!
Except running and fielding are also part of the game.
Bichette was objectively a better hitter than Vlad last year.
He was only in the top class of hitters one of his five years.
What did Tyler Heineman do to ZiPS to deserve a projection of 22wRC+
22 is the RC projection. The OPS+ projection (which is more similar to wRC+) is 66 (which is still not great).
Be bad at hitting MLB pitching?
I love Bo Bichette. Love. And he’s underperformed a little the last two years. I mean, 4-to-4.5 WAR seasons out of a shortstop are really nice but also not what I expected.
So I’m trying to understand what this means:
Bo Bichette is terrific and the Jays ought to extend him soon, lest he take $300 million to go somewhere else in a few years.
Zips is projecting him for just under 4 WAR at age 26. Do you think that’s where the market is heading for 4-win players? Or do you think he levels up as he nears his prime years?
We’ve actually seen a pretty large sample of shortstops get values for putting Bo around $300M, especially given that he’s a free agent 3+ years later.
Ie: Lindor, Seager, Turner, Boegaerts, Correa (2x before failing physicals), Tatis.
Billy Butler and Mike Sweeney are great comps for anyone not named Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
This is a silly piece of feedback, but… the field in the graphic is supposed to resemble the team’s home field, right? And that outfield at the Skydome isn’t symmetrical or perfectly round, anymore.
Generally speaking, we’re usually a bit behind on them since I have to edit them these days and I am not particularly artsy.
I like that Ricky Tiedemann’s top age related Comp suggests he’ll be a career 4.5 WAR OF!
Not many players get over 200 IP and 3000 inning at CF.
I honestly forgot that Ankiel was actually a decent hitter his first two seasons as a position player. Fun trip down memory lane.
they are impossible to deal with but if I’m the Jays I’d be calling the Rockies up about McMahon
they need LHH power and he plays a good 3B
Alejandro Kirk and Josh Thole comparison is certainly horrifying.
The fielding numbers Varsho has put up the last couple of years are like a WAR cheat code. Whatever he loses “above average” compared to other centerfielders he’ll get back in positional adjustment. If his bat doesn’t cause him to lose playing time he seems like a pretty safe bet to exceed the defense component and thus the WAR projection. Question is if he’s still such a big negative at the plate, does Toronto still give him 550+ PA?
